Exploring the iconic C. S. Lewis essay "Meditation in a Toolshed" from 1945, where Lewis considers two ways of knowing things: "looking at" and "looking along". We might say, contemplating and enjoying. He argues that both are valid and necessary and which one is best depends on the circumstances. However, he points out that "looking along" is far undervalued and often disregarded completely by Western culture. Exploring the second part of the 1944 C. S. Lewis essay "Myth Became Fact" where Lewis defends Christianity against the de-mythologizing. He argues that the mythic nature of Christianity is essential and that what elevates it above all other myths is that this Myth actually became Fact. That is, it really happened. This was the idea that J. R. R. Tolkien argued with the non-Christian Lewis, which led to Lewis' conversion. The Rev'd Andrew Lazo joins us today to talk about C. S. Lewis's book “Till We Have Faces.” We help you understand the background for the book, its setting, and some of its major themes. We believe (as did Lewis himself) that “Till We Have Faces” is his greatest book. You will learn the connection between joy and love, the overarching theme of all Lewis's books, and how to rethink your “ugly” parts. Andrew is one of the co-hosts on the podcast Pints with Jack, he is an internationally known speaker and writer, an expert on C. S. Lewis and the Inklings, and a priest in the Episcopal Church. He is currently working on a groundbreaking book about “Till We Have Faces.” You can learn more about him at his website www.mythoflove.net and you can watch his lecture at the Wade Center at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JR81Mz58prI. Lewis, the process of writing the biography, and a few of the assumptions about C.S. Lewis he's disproven. Among other things, we discuss: The importance of Lewis' childhood in forming his tastes The Janie Moore affair (or lack thereof?) Biography versus memoir Lewis' love of allegory and his Allegory of Love Lewis' likely influence on Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Barfield: The Inkling Who Wasn't Some objections to the Planet Narnia thesis C.S. The Sermon given at All Saints Church Chevy Chase by the Rev. Andrew Lazo, for April 23rd 2023.
In 1960, C. S. Lewis published The Four Loves which chronicles the four Greek definitions of love. Today, we will explore Eros love, the romantic/sexual type of love with Reverend Andrew Lazo, C. S. Lewis scholar and co-host of Pints with Jack. We know sex sells in all areas of our culture and economy and has been for centuries. But why are we suspectable to this tricky trap? Why does sex sell and how can we break from this inflamed cycle of desire and want in a negative way? Using C. S. Lewis as a touchstone, we'll explore this challenging issue from a historical, academic and modern perspective.
Andrew Lazo joins us with a fascinating look at the underlying message of C.S. Lewis's masterpiece Till We Have Faces and unravels the mystery of how the book ends. Show Notes Check out Andrew on the Pints with Jack Podcast
Today "Pints With Jack" co-host, Andrew Lazo, is ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Church. To commemorate the day, Rev. Malcom Guite wrote him a poem and Phil Keaggy wrote him some music.

We're back! This is a long-overdue, if abbreviated, first part of a two-part conclusion to Till We Have Faces. We're a little less Ent-ish about our discussion than we normally are, and we manage to get through four whole chapters in one episode. Hasty much? Even so, we find things to linger on as Orual herself speeds through some of the highlights of her rule in Glome, beginning with her duel against Argan and ending with an explanation for why she is writing this book in the first place. Have feedback? Fanfic? A deep desire to be part of the show? Tell us all about it by writing to InklingsVarietyHour@gmail.com. We'd love to meet you, and I will eventually reply. I promise. High thanks and praise to Logan Huggins for producing this episode! We'll be back next week to end our discussion of Till We Have Faces with friend of the show Andrew Lazo (who pops in at the end of this episode)! Stay tuned!

SHOW NOTES- I met Andrew Lazo at the C. S. Lewis Writers conference this past month. He was an entertaining man and wonderful speaker, and very knowledgeable about everything C. S. Lewis. I asked him to come on the show to fill in some gaps and answer some questions for me about this wonderful man, the Chronicles of Narnia. Questions we ponder in the podcast. Was C. S. Lewis really an atheist? How old was he when he created the Chronicles of Narnia? What was his relationship between J.R.R. Tolkien When did he first get the idea for a portion of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe? What caused him to look at Christianity more seriously? Who are The Inklings?
