Joining me today are Shawn and Sandy Smith, who I had the opportunity to meet when they attended our first While We're Waiting Weekend in Michigan a couple years ago.  Their faith has been tested in ways most of us can hardly imagine—first, when Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer, and then, just days later, when their six-year-old son Andrew was diagnosed with DIPG, an aggressive and terminal form of brain cancer. Through every challenge, every difficult conversation, and every painful moment, Shawn and Sandy clung to their faith, trusting that God had a purpose even in their suffering. In this episode, they share how they walked through this unimaginable season with hope, how Andrew's childlike faith and joy reflected the goodness of God, and how they found peace in His promises—even when healing on this earth was not part of His plan. Their story is one of deep sorrow but also incredible trust in God's sovereignty—a story of holding fast to His Word, even when the path ahead seemed impossible. If you've ever wrestled with faith in the face of suffering, this conversation will remind you that God has not forgotten you.  Be sure and come back next week to hear more of their story!  I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell and attorney Eric Bland talk about the horrors of the Los Angeles wildfires and how Big Insurance, as well as systemic failures in government preparation have made a catastrophic situation even worse.  Closer to home, the three talk about the success of Luna Shark's billboard blitz in the hopes of seeking answers in the Stephen Smith case (not to mention Sandy Smith's decision to increase the reward to $50,000 for information leading to arrests in her son's murder case).  Also on the show, a federal jury found Cory Fleming liable for his part in Alex Murdaugh's scheme to steal millions from Gloria Satterfield's family, but is HE the biggest loser to emerge from the Nautilus trial? Or did the insurance company waste untold amounts of time and money in launching an easily predictable losing battle over something that may ultimately be their own fault?  Plus, the latest in the Mica Francis case: Emails and texts show that JP MIller — and his right hand woman Tricia Ross — accused an Horry County Police Department officer of being at fault for Mica's death. AND Wayne Miller's odd real estate connection to Mica's divorce attorney Regina Ward — who also represented Mica's family in the fight over who would be personal representative for Mica.

Premium members get a special discussion on Liz's snow day adventures, Mandy's aversion to winter, and Eric's past commuting woes in Philadelphia…and we'll touch on the dangers of public transportation in New York. This week Alex Murdaugh's best friend and co-conspirator Cory Fleming is back in federal court for the Nautilus case … but why? What defense could he possibly offer the insurance company that says Alex and Cory swindled them out of $3.8 million in the Satterfield scheme? Last week, Alex ended Nautilus' claim against him with a confession of judgment worth $14.8 million … meaning, things could get really bad for Cory. And yet he's still going for it. We also delve into the confusing aspects of the case, such as the role of the insurance companies and their handling of the initial claim and the potential for other co-conspirators to be revealed, especially if Cory Fleming or Alex Murdaugh provides testimony. Finally, the hosts shift gears to discuss the controversy surrounding Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, including Lively's initial complaint and Baldoni's defamation lawsuit. We'll dive into where the three land on who “the bad guy” is here.  Plus, Sandy Smith plans to increase the reward in the search for her son's killers as more people take notice of the Stephen Smith billboards that LUNASHARK has funded throughout South Carolina. More to come on that and a new event planned for July soon so stay tuned!

On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell begin their dive down the complex rabbit hole that is the Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci case.  Sara Lynn was killed on the evening of May 20, 2015, outside of Charleston, South Carolina, at a jewelry warehouse she owned with her husband, Michael Colucci. She died by asphyxiation mere feet from Michael, who said he was waiting in the car for her to use the restroom. Michael Colucci contends that Sara Lynn took her own life or … barring that … she tripped and fell into the loops of an industrial garden hose and accidentally hung herself.  When first-responders arrived at the scene, they found Sara Lynn's body already cold to the touch and Michael with scratches on his body and a fat and bloody lip, which he says he got from giving Sara Lynn CPR. In 2018, Michael was tried for her murder but that case ended in a mistrial. Now, as the prosecution and defense gear up for a May 13, 2024, retrial, Mandy and Liz break down what went wrong six years ago and the story of Sara Lynn and Michael that the jury should have heard back then.   We'll also hear from speakers at the Victims Matter Rally like David Pascoe, Carl Smalls Sr. and Sarah Ford plus a special message from Sandy Smith on her experiences at the rally... Alex Murdaugh Takes a Hit, Judge Bans 'Egg Lady' Juror to Claim Clerk Poisoned Jury

Alex Murdaugh's three-day evidentiary hearing takes place later this month. The hearings will held in open court and court-controlled television cameras will be allowed. They cannot, however, focus on the faces of testifying jurors, who will be referred to by their juror numbers, not their names. The hearing will determine whether Murdaugh will be granted a new murder trial, after his attorneys, alleged jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill. Former S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal is now the judge hearing the case. She took control of her South Carolina courtroom -, making several rulings affecting Alex Murdaugh's bid. His attorneys say jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill impacted the original trial's outcome, and that according to Toal, will be the defense's burden to prove. The attorneys argued the law only required them to prove improper contact with jurors had occurred. Toal says she will rule that, “Prejudice must be proved, not presumed.” Toal says the stand she will take on the specific evidence of ”what was said, when it was said, and how it impacted the jury,” lies with the defense, not an assumption on Becky Hill's credibility. Toal told the courtroom that she would not allow the upcoming evidentiary hearing to turn into a trial of Becky Hill. Becky Hill is facing her own ongoing ethics and criminal investigations related to her conduct during and after the Murdaugh trial.  The judge says she intends to limit the witness list to the twelve deliberating jurors and Becky Hill.   An alternate juror and Juror 785, now known as the “egg lady” due to her insistence that she retrieve a dozen eggs from the jury room before leaving the courthouse, will not be allowed to testify.  Toal says she sees  “no necessity” to hear from anyone other than the (deliberating) jurors.”   What's more, Toal says she will be the one asking the questions. Is the pursuit of justice an ever-winding road? In the latest episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, host Tony Brueski, alongside attorney Eric Bland, tackles the ongoing complexities of the Alex Murdaugh saga, with a specific focus on the potential for a retrial in light of new developments. Bland, representing several victims of Murdaugh's actions, including Gloria Satterfield's family, provides an update that may hold the key to unlocking new chapters in this legal thriller.    Eric Bland paints a picture of a legal landscape dramatically altered by the potential of a retrial for Alex Murdaugh. "The possibility of an Alex Murdaugh murder retrial is a scary thing," Bland begins, setting the tone for a discussion rife with legal twists and turns. As he elaborates on the complexity of the evidentiary hearing needed to render an impartial verdict, he underlines the importance of fair judicial processes, stating, "The reason our system works is because the worst of us get the same procedures that the best of us get."    As Bland dissects the intricacies of the case, he points to the impact of recent accusations against Becky Hill, who faces allegations of jury tampering. The plot thickens with the arrest of her son, Jeffrey Colton Hill, for wiretapping, further entangling the Murdaugh name in a web of potential criminal activities. These events, as Bland suggests, could play a pivotal role in determining the course of a new trial.    "The investigation is very much alive," Bland reassures, despite the temporary diversion of investigative resources due to Murdaugh's other legal battles. He hints at the presence of the Murdaugh name in the case file over 41 times and the ongoing quest for answers in the death of Stephen Smith. Bland shares insights from a recent conversation with Chief Mark Keel, indicating the renewed focus on Smith's case and the hope for breakthroughs from digital evidence yet to be confirmed by SLED.    The conversation takes a turn as Bland addresses the curious dynamics between Sandy Smith's recollection of events and the conflicting accounts provided by the Murdaughs. He expresses optimism for progress, given the active engagement of law enforcement officials, despite the complexities introduced by the wiretapping charges against Hill's son and the ethical inquiries into Becky Hill's conduct.    The discussion with Brueski traverses the sensitive terrain of the jurors' experiences, the anticipated procedures of the evidentiary hearing, and the potential implications of Becky Hill's compromised credibility. Bland's seasoned perspective sheds light on the jurors' determination to protect their verdict and the challenge posed by the snowballing allegations against Hill.    As Bland delves into the details, including the peculiarities surrounding the wiretapping incident and its possible connection to jury tampering, listeners are left pondering the depth of the Murdaugh family's influence. "I was thinking there's not a chance this is going to work if we were just strictly talking on the jury tampering issues," Bland states, but he acknowledges the escalating situation: "But then the son came up, and then all the other things came up, and it's like this is turning into a snowball that didn't need to take place."    As the podcast episode concludes, Bland reflects on the judicial shifts, including Judge Newman's recusal, and the implications for the Murdaugh case. With a combination of legal acumen and a touch of human empathy, Bland and Brueski leave listeners with a lingering question: What will be the next turn in this convoluted path to justice?    In the search for truth and accountability, the narrative of Alex Murdaugh continues to captivate and confound. As Bland succinctly puts it, "We'll have to see exactly how that all plays out." Will the potential retrial unravel further secrets, or will it lead to more questions than answers? Can a mother's quest for truth unearth the secrets behind a perplexing tragedy? As the Alex Murdaugh saga continues to unfold, revelations about the case of Stephen Smith, who died under mysterious circumstances, have resurfaced, prompting fresh discussions about possible connections to the Murdaugh family. Attorney Eric Bland, representing many victims of Alex Murdaugh including Stephen Smith's mother, Sandy Smith, provided an update on the podcast "Hidden Killers" with host Tony Brueski.    Stephen Smith's untimely death has remained a perplexing enigma. For years, the whispers of a potential Murdaugh connection simmered in the background, with no charges brought against any family members. But it wasn't until the brutal murder of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh that the investigation into Smith's death gained renewed vigor.    "The investigation is very much alive," attorney Eric Bland assured listeners, relaying information from a recent conversation with Chief Mark Keel, head of South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). However, the ongoing legal entanglements surrounding Alex Murdaugh have caused a temporary diversion of resources away from Smith's case.    Bland shared that while no evidence directly links the Murdaugh family to Smith's demise, Sandy Smith has consistently stated that she saw Alex Murdaugh and his brother, Randy, at the accident scene the morning after her son's death—a claim countered by Randy, who insists his visit was days later and unrelated to the night of the tragedy.    In a twist of investigative progress, Bland mentioned the potential breakthroughs in accessing digital evidence from Stephen's phone and tablet, which may hold vital clues. However, SLED has yet to confirm these developments.    The podcast delved into the discrepancies between the narratives provided by the Murdaughs and Sandy Smith, with Bland emphasizing the importance of determining the truth. He expressed hope for answers, particularly in light of the evidence not aligning with a typical hit-and-run accident, as initially suspected in Stephen's death.    "The son's sneakers weren't blown off. No broken bones on his lower limbs or his hips, which you would expect if you were hit by a bumper of a car," Bland explained, highlighting inconsistencies with the physical evidence found at the scene.    With Chief Keel's impending return to duty following a brief retirement period, the investigation's pace is expected to pick up. Bland's discussion with Tony Brueski underscored the complicated dynamics at play and the pursuit of clarity for Sandy Smith.    Sandy Smith's plight is not one for vengeance but for understanding. Bland stated, "Sandy doesn't want blood... She's not looking for somebody to be convicted of murder. What she's looking for is answers." After eight years of heartache and confusion, these answers are what Sandy Smith and the community hope will shed light on the truth of Stephen Smith's tragic fate.    Eric Bland's participation in the "Hidden Killers" podcast has provided an insightful and poignant perspective on a case that has captured the attention of true crime enthusiasts and the public alike. As the conversation concluded, Bland expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to share updates, leaving listeners with a renewed sense of anticipation for what might be revealed next.    Will the renewed focus on the Stephen Smith case finally bring the long-awaited answers to a grieving mother? Will Alex Murdaugh get a new trial?  So far the possibility is up in the air, as allegations of jury tampering have been levied against Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca (Becky) Hill.  Hill has denied any wrongdoing. At the same time Hill's son, Jeff, has been arrested and is facing charges related to wiretapping.  SLED agents accuse Jeff Hill of illegally recording conversations of deputy county administrator Meagan Utse.  She served as a liaison between the county and the court during the Murdaugh murder trial. Jeffrey Hill is the technology director at Colleton County Administration. New information is also coming in on the death of Stephen Smith. The 19-year-old was found lying in the middle of the road.  His car was found three miles away. The coroner's office ruled the death a hit-and-run.  After having her son's body exhumed and a new autopsy performed, we learn Smith was killed by blunt force trauma. Forensic Pathologist Dr. Michelle Dupre, who oversaw the exhumation, reveals the findings Joining Nancy Grace Today: Sandy Smith - Stephen Smith's Mother Ronnie Richter – Attorney for Sandy Smith, Satterfield family, and other victims of Alex Murdaugh; Partner, Bland Richter Law Firm; Twitter: @BlandRichterSC Caryn Stark – NYC Psychologist, Renowned TV and Radio Trauma Expert and Consultant; Twitter: @carynpsych, Instagram: carynpsych, and FB: Caryn Stark Private Practice Dr. Kenny Kinsey- Kenny Kinsey & Associates LLC, Forensic Expert in Murdaugh murder trial; Orangeburg County Chief Deputy, Crime Scene Reconstruction Expert, and Former SLED Special Agent; Twitter: @DrKennethKinsey Todd G. In a stunning turn of events, the unsolved death case of Stephen Smith, dating back to July 2015, has seen significant progress, thanks to a connection with the recent Murdaugh murders. Sandy Smith, Stephen's mother, has been relentless in her pursuit of justice for her son, and recent developments have shed new light on the long-standing mystery.    Smith's determination paid off when renowned lawyers Eric Bland and Ronnie Richter stepped in to represent her pro bono, shortly after they began representing victims of Alex Murdaugh's alleged financial scams. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) had initially classified Stephen Smith's death as a hit-and-run, a conclusion disputed by both Smith and investigators. However, with Bland and Richter's involvement, SLED acknowledged the need to treat Stephen Smith's case as a homicide.    The pivotal moment came when SLED opened an investigation into the Murdaugh murders, specifically Paul and Maggie Murdaugh. This development reignited interest in Stephen Smith's case, suggesting a potential connection between the two cases. Sandy Smith did not hesitate to express her sentiments, saying, "Somebody else had to die" to bring attention to her son's case.    Alex Murdaugh's recent conviction for the double murders of his wife and son further intertwined the two cases. Bland and Richter extended their pro bono representation to Sandy Smith, recognizing her relentless pursuit of justice. "This is a woman that has fought this battle alone since 2015 … screaming as loud as she could … with not a lot of people listening," said Bland.    Rumors of Murdaugh involvement in Stephen Smith's death had circulated since the early days of the investigation. Some claimed that a Murdaugh child had been in a vehicle with others and was alleged to have been involved in Stephen Smith's death. Buster Murdaugh, Alex Murdaugh's oldest son, publicly denied these rumors, calling them "baseless" and offering an alibi that he was at their beach house with his mother and brother at the time of Stephen Smith's death.    However, SLED's findings have kept the cases connected, prompting further speculation about the evidence uncovered during the Murdaugh murder investigation. Cellphone evidence played a crucial role in Alex Murdaugh's trial, and it's possible that Stephen Smith's phone or tablet, found in his front pocket, may hold critical clues. Sandy Smith had previously requested the FBI's assistance in cracking Stephen's phone in 2016, but the case did not progress.    Sandy Smith's attorneys have confirmed that SLED now possesses all the evidence related to Stephen Smith's case, including his phone and tablet. An investigative grand jury is actively pursuing potential suspects. Sandy Smith remains determined to find answers and justice, announcing a scholarship fund in Stephen's name and offering a $30,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.    Recent developments in Stephen Smith's case have brought a renewed sense of hope to his mother and the investigators involved. An independent investigation led by Dr. Kenny Kinsey and Dr. Michelle DuPre uncovered startling findings, ruling out the initial hit-and-run theory. Instead, they theorized that Stephen had died from a single fatal blow to the head, which occurred on the road where his body was found.    According to Dr. DuPre, "The injuries can tell us so much about what happened," and in this case, they provided valuable insights. Dr. Kinsey added that "Whatever hit him was fast and it was large."    The discoveries made during this investigation have provided a degree of scientific certainty about what transpired on the night of Stephen Smith's death, marking a significant breakthrough in a case that had remained unresolved for years.    As the investigation continues, Sandy Smith remains committed to finding justice for her son, with the hope that the new developments will finally provide the answers she has sought for nearly a decade. It's been another wild week in the world of Alex Murdaugh. True Sunlight co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell give a breakdown of what happened at Alex's federal plea hearing last week and the vicious dealings that have occurred since then. What is Alex's larger plan? Also on the show, Cory Fleming appeals his sentencing in South Carolina Circuit Court and Russell Laffitte is reporting to prison … in Florida. Plus an exploration into how Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin are being paid and why recent subpoenas seeking information about their entertainment deals are important. For some reason, we didn't expect to still be stuck in Murdaugh land this fall. We were admittedly in denial thinking these cases would wrap up quietly and we could move on to other victims who need help shining the sunlight. But here we are, another week with an episode full of updates and important information on the never-ending Murdaugh saga.  While there is so much more to talk about today, we'll start off by talking about Crime Con and the concept of accountability.  We can't rely on those who police lawyers in our state to do anything about Dick's gun-pointing in court or Jim breaking prison rules for his propaganda documentary, but we can remind our millions of listeners and thousands of Luna Shark Premium Members of who these men really are and why they don't deserve to be celebrated and that is a big deal. Every human instinctively craves a loving family to grow up with and the security and freedom that family can bring to our hearts. If you have a loving family, don't take it for granted because many of the people around you don't have that. In this episode of the 10.10 Podcast, Amir Tsarfati, President and Founder of Behold Israel, talks about growing up in Israel in the group homes that make up the foster care system. You will hear that Foster Care means something quite different in Israel than America. However, there is also so much brokenness in our system here in America. I've followed Amir online for many years, watching the live updates from Israel and hearing his biblical perspective on the end times and prophecy, but it was a different experience to sit across the table with him and hear how God has led his life with a clear purpose of his salvation, his evangelism, and the mission to stand for life. You will be inspired and amazed at God's mercy and goodness through the story of Amir.

True Sunlight co-hosts Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell— and everyone's favorite attorney Eric Bland — talk about the latest fraud in the Lowcountry, what Al Capone has to do with the Murdaugh case and the very big punch Eric and his law partner are planning to lob back at Alex Murdaugh's attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and JIm Griffin. On today's episode, we started out by talking about a Beaufort woman who allegedly used Sandy Smith and her efforts to get answers about Stephen's death as a way to defraud people out of money. It's a really bizarre story but one that unfortunately has become familiar to us in the past two years with people attaching themselves to the Murdaugh case in self-serving ways. But also it reminded us of Alex Murdaugh himself. This woman was able to leverage her power and position in the community as a way to allegedly steal money that was meant to go to people in need or toward causes like Sandy's. Liz and Mandy's former co-workers Delayna Earley and Mike McCombs investigated this case. You can read more about it on The Island News' website.  Liz, Eric and Mandy tackle a number of topics today, including our continued concern over the federal government's role in the Murdaugh case and whether it's just a way to contain and manage any investigations into whatever it is that Alex and his co-conspirators were into in the Lowcountry. Also, Eric shared a bit a news about what he and his law partner plan to do next in their battle with Dick and Jim. Only one person alive knows what really happened to Gloria Satterfield the day she was found bleeding from the head at Moselle in February 2018. And we all know who that is...  Murdaugh Murders Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell unwind the latest filing from Alex Murdaugh's attorneys in which the convicted murderer now admits to lying about how Gloria Satterfield died. Also on the show: the boat crash case starts heating up and Dick and Jim beg the court for money.  On Tuesday May 9, Sandy Smith and I will be speaking among several special guests at the Victims Matter Rally at the Statehouse in Columbia South Carolina. As we have talked about time and time again on this podcast, our justice system so often prioritizes the privileged and fails victims of violent crime. And too many of our lawmakers are working for the bad guys.  As we are working on expanding our reach to focus on cases across the nation and maybe eventually the world where Crime Meets Corruption — we want to ensure that the pressure continues right here at home in South Carolina.  We hope to see you at the SC Statehouse on Tuesday... and let's get into it... Eight years after 19-year-old Stephen Smith's body was found on a rural South Carolina road, investigators are finally saying the thing his family has known all along: He was not killed in a hit-and-run... STEPHEN WAS MURDERED. MMP co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell talk to Stephen's mother Sandy Smith about the latest developments in one of the most heart-breaking cases connected to convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh and his family. And we share key moments from Eric Bland (Co-host of our Cup Of Justice podcast) and partner Ronnie Richter's press conference announcing their representation of Sandy Smith. To learn more about the planned Independent Exhumation and Autopsy for Stephen, click here: http://bit.ly/3JGacec A private medical examiner must be present from the start of the exhumation through the examination period at a cost of approximately $750 per hour. It is a huge expense, but we are hoping that with your support we can make this happen and finally get the answers we need. If you can give, we thank you for your generosity. If you cannot give, we would appreciate you sharing and praying for justice for Stephen. We believe 2023 is Stephen's year. Thank you for your patience as this episode is publishing later than usual. As I said on social media, our team is in adjustment mode after the adrenaline and the chaos of the trial slowed down and we're all still trying to all recenter our focus.  Now that Alex Murdaugh has been convicted in the murders of his wife and son, it's time to take a look back on all the pieces that had to come together for the jury to deliver that guilty verdict. In the short time since Alex Murdaugh was convicted of murdering his wife and son, a lot has happened in the wake of his sentencing. This week on Murdaugh Murders Podcast, co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell take a look at the latest criticism of the murder investigation and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division — as well as Jim Griffin's strange post-trial social media presence and Russell Laffitte's defeats in the courtroom. They also talk with Sandy Smith about the next steps in finding justice for her son, Stephen Smith.
