Joining me today are Shawn and Sandy Smith, who I had the opportunity to meet when they attended our first While We're Waiting Weekend in Michigan a couple years ago.  Their faith has been tested in ways most of us can hardly imagine—first, when Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer, and then, just days later, when their six-year-old son Andrew was diagnosed with DIPG, an aggressive and terminal form of brain cancer. Through every challenge, every difficult conversation, and every painful moment, Shawn and Sandy clung to their faith, trusting that God had a purpose even in their suffering. In this episode, they share how they walked through this unimaginable season with hope, how Andrew's childlike faith and joy reflected the goodness of God, and how they found peace in His promises—even when healing on this earth was not part of His plan. Their story is one of deep sorrow but also incredible trust in God's sovereignty—a story of holding fast to His Word, even when the path ahead seemed impossible. On today's True Sunlight Podcast, Co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell begin their dive down the complex rabbit hole that is the Sara Lynn Moore-Colucci case.  Sara Lynn was killed on the evening of May 20, 2015, outside of Charleston, South Carolina, at a jewelry warehouse she owned with her husband, Michael Colucci. She died by asphyxiation mere feet from Michael, who said he was waiting in the car for her to use the restroom. Michael Colucci contends that Sara Lynn took her own life or … barring that … she tripped and fell into the loops of an industrial garden hose and accidentally hung herself.  When first-responders arrived at the scene, they found Sara Lynn's body already cold to the touch and Michael with scratches on his body and a fat and bloody lip, which he says he got from giving Sara Lynn CPR. In 2018, Michael was tried for her murder but that case ended in a mistrial. Now, as the prosecution and defense gear up for a May 13, 2024, retrial, Mandy and Liz break down what went wrong six years ago and the story of Sara Lynn and Michael that the jury should have heard back then.   We'll also hear from speakers at the Victims Matter Rally like David Pascoe, Carl Smalls Sr. and Sarah Ford plus a special message from Sandy Smith on her experiences at the rally... Alex Murdaugh's three-day evidentiary hearing takes place later this month. The hearings will held in open court and court-controlled television cameras will be allowed. They cannot, however, focus on the faces of testifying jurors, who will be referred to by their juror numbers, not their names. The hearing will determine whether Murdaugh will be granted a new murder trial, after his attorneys, alleged jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill. Former S.C. Chief Justice Jean Toal is now the judge hearing the case. She took control of her South Carolina courtroom -, making several rulings affecting Alex Murdaugh's bid. His attorneys say jury tampering by Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill impacted the original trial's outcome, and that according to Toal, will be the defense's burden to prove. The attorneys argued the law only required them to prove improper contact with jurors had occurred. Toal says she will rule that, “Prejudice must be proved, not presumed.” Toal says the stand she will take on the specific evidence of ”what was said, when it was said, and how it impacted the jury,” lies with the defense, not an assumption on Becky Hill's credibility. Toal told the courtroom that she would not allow the upcoming evidentiary hearing to turn into a trial of Becky Hill. Becky Hill is facing her own ongoing ethics and criminal investigations related to her conduct during and after the Murdaugh trial.  The judge says she intends to limit the witness list to the twelve deliberating jurors and Becky Hill.   An alternate juror and Juror 785, now known as the “egg lady” due to her insistence that she retrieve a dozen eggs from the jury room before leaving the courthouse, will not be allowed to testify.  Toal says she sees  “no necessity” to hear from anyone other than the (deliberating) jurors.”   What's more, Toal says she will be the one asking the questions. It's been another wild week in the world of Alex Murdaugh.
