On this episode of Women on the Line we chat with Maxine Chi (Chai) who is a contributor to the Our Story: Aboriginal – Chinese people in Australia, an exhibition that has been curated by Zhou Xiaoping and held at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra until 27 January 2026. Maxine is a Bardi Aboriginal woman who has Chinese, Japanese and Scottish ancestry. She was born in Broome, Western Australia in 1954, a place which has a rich history of people from around the world, mainly Asia and Australia, coming to live and work in the pearling industry from the late 1890s. Maxine currently teaches the Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Studies at Notre Dame University, Broome Campus, online and face to face with her students. She has worked in various government positions in State and Commonwealth Governments as well as the Kimberley Land Council, the Aboriginal Legal Service of WA (Inc), Department of Housing (WA) and is a member of the Bardi and Jawi Niimidiman Aboriginal Corporation the native title body for her countrymen and women.

America stands at a democratic crossroads, facing threats not from invasion or coup, but from methodical dismantling from within. This is the reality: federal agencies are gutted, political opponents are targeted, judges are being arrested for not advancing Trump's agenda, and courts are delegitimized with alarming speed.Dr. Laura Gamboa, democracy expert from Notre Dame University, and author of the book Resisting Backsliding: Opposition Strategies against the Erosion of Democracy, joins the pod and brings critical insight from her studies of democratic backsliding across Latin America. What makes our current crisis particularly insidious is how democratic institutions themselves become weapons against democracy. Unlike military coups, this erosion happens gradually enough that many citizens fail to recognize the danger until it's too late.The courts represent our most significant remaining bulwark, but they cannot stand alone. Gamboa explains how Colombia's constitutional court successfully blocked President Uribe's authoritarian ambitions – but only because they received visible public support and political allies in Congress. When judges feel abandoned, as happened in Venezuela, they become reluctant to oppose even clearly unconstitutional power grabs.For resistance to succeed, several strategies prove essential: protests need focused goals rather than diffuse expressions of discontent; democracy defenders must build coalitions beyond partisan lines; and Americans should learn from countries that have successfully resisted democratic erosion rather than reinventing strategies. Dr. Gamboa outlines some innovative tactics beyond traditional demonstrations that we need to start considering, particularly focused on protecting electoral integrity.The window for action is narrowing daily. Haley McNamara and Dani Pinter sit down with Melinda Tankard Reist, Co-Founder and Movement Director of Collective Shout, for a discussion around the recent successful campaign to remove a sexually violent game called “No Mercy” from Steam. Melinda describes how the game allows players to sexually assault your family members and rewards you for doing so. In less than a week, this campaign garnered over 70,000 signatures and over 3,000 emails sent to the CEO of Valve to remove this game. Despite the backlash and threats, Melinda and the team at Collective Shout continue their work to protect women and children from objectification and sexualization. Melinda is an author, speaker, media commentator and campaigner. She is best known for her work addressing sexualization, objectification, harms of pornography, sexual exploitation, trafficking and violence against women. Melinda is author/editor of seven books (no. 8 on boundary-setting for girls forthcoming 2025). She co-founded Collective Shout for a world free of sexploitation 15 years ago, and is Movement Director. Melinda is an Ambassador for World Vision Australia, Compassion Australia, Hagar NZ and the youth mentoring body the Raise Foundation. She is also Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Culture and Ethics, Notre Dame University, Sydney and named in the Who's Who of Australian Women and the World Who's Who of Women. In 2024 she was the recipient of the ‘Global Impact Award' presented at the Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation [CESE] Global Summit in Washington DC.

Mojofest, Dublin, 28th, 29th April When and where is it on? 28th & 29th April, 2025 - UCD, In the O'Reilly Hall Conference Centre, University College, Belfield, Dublin 4 How many years has it been going? It started as RTÉ Mojocon in 2015 when I was head of innovation. It ran for 3 years until I took an exit package and started Mojofest in 2018. This is the 4th Mojofest (disrupted by Covid) but also the 10-year anniversary of our first Mojocon event which was at the CCD in Dublin. What was the inspiration to start it? Mainly frustration to be honest. I'd started training media organisations in Mobile Journalism in 2011 and was getting great feedback on the training but not much progress on implementation and transformation. After meeting several other early adopters like Nick Garnett and Marc Settle from BBC, John Inge Johansen from NRK, Illico Elia formerly Reuters and Len Clarke from Notre Dame University it became clear that there was a need for a network and an event seemed like the logical way to create one. That network, started after RTÉ Mojocon as a group on Facebook in 2015 now has over 7500 members from over 100 countries. What exciting things can people look forward to? We are just about to announce Jacque (Jacqueline) Smith, VP of digital video with CNN will be keynoting on day one and day two we have Hannah Wilson who has a social following of 750k across platforms both of whom speak about the top trends and tips for success with social/digital/vertical storytelling. We have 16 workshops already announced and expect there will be even more over the event. Many of these are practical hands-on learning sessions will be of real value for attendees who want to acquire/perfect new skills. The expo will be full of the leading brands making apps and accessories for professional grade mobile content creation. Many will have special event only prices and offers.
