What's the real purpose of education? Is it just about passing tests—or passing the torch of civilization itself? In this episode, Dr. Louis Markos, professor, prolific author, and champion of classical Christian education, returns to share insights from his new book, Passing the Torch: An Apology for Classical Christian Education. Drawing from Plato to C.S. Lewis, he makes the compelling case that education is soul formation, not social engineering—and classical Christian education is the only model robust enough to raise morally self-regulating, virtuous citizens.Discover why reading the great books is more than academic—it's civilizational. Learn how truth, goodness, and beauty still anchor us in a culture adrift. And be encouraged: this is not a nostalgic movement—it's a necessary revival for the future.

Welcome to another Classical Essentials, a special Best of Basecamp Live series! Over the years, we've had incredible conversations unpacking the foundational ideas of classical Christian education. In this series, we're bringing back some of the most popular and essential episodes to help parents, educators, and school leaders better understand the core principles that make this movement so impactful. Why should Christian students read pagan books? Wouldn't it be safer to stick to Christian authors? Shouldn't we only fill our children's minds with explicitly biblical works? These are common concerns among parents and educators, and in this episode, Dr. Louis Markos offers a compelling answer. Many of history's greatest books—from Homer to Plato to Virgil—were written by pre-Christian authors. Yet, these works wrestle with profound questions about virtue, truth, and human nature—questions that ultimately point to Christ. Rather than being a threat to faith, these books can deepen a student's understanding of God's truth and equip them to engage thoughtfully with today's secular world.

Christians today are alarmed by the rising pressures around them. So much of the growing hostility seems alien, angry and novel. But the truth is, the Church has encountered pressures since it was born. None of this is new. To help us gain our bearings, Professor Louis Markos joins the Christian Emergency Podcast. Professor Markos teaches at the Texas Christian University and is the author of 25 books, covering such topics as the early Church, ancient Rome and Greece, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien and apologetics. On this episode, Professor Markos sheds helpful light on how the early Church responded to serious persecution in their own day. How was their experience similar to ours? What can we learn from them and apply in our own lives? We must rediscover Christian history and the history of persecution. Today's show helps do precisely this. Armed with this important insight, the pressures we face will be placed in better context. You will be encouraged, and our circumstances will be both less mysterious and frightening.    If you find this episode helpful, please give us a positive rating and review wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Most universities today are swiftly accommodating themselves to an increasingly radicalized postmodern worldview. American colleges and universities— a disturbing number of which claim to be Christian —have abdicated their responsibility to train students in virtue and to measure what they teach against cultural standards of goodness, truth, and beauty. But it's not all doom and gloom—there is hope. Christian college-bound students need to keep their eyes fixed on their true and secure citizenship in the Kingdom of God and forearm themselves against the philosophical presuppositions and political agendas that undergird much of higher education today. The Christian students who keep their eyes fixed on the true wisdom that is from above can survive and do thrive in the university. This episode is a discussion of some of the dos and don'ts to forearm the college-bound student. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with Journal author Louis Markos about his Viewpoint article, “Seven or So Exhortations to College-Bound Students” in the 45:2-3 (Fall 2022) edition of the Christian Research Journal. This episode focuses on the sad but triumphant tale of the martyrdom of Polycarp. Well-named was our beloved Bishop of Smyrna; “much fruit” is what his name means in Greek, and he has done just that, both in his ministry to the church and in the glorious manner of his death. There are some who claim that Polycarp harbored a death wish, but nothing could be further from the truth. When he was advised to flee the city to avoid arrest, trial, and execution, he humbly complied. But escape was not to be the lot assigned to him by God. Polycarp learned this himself from a prophetic dream that was vouchsafed to him by heaven. In his dream, he lay in bed upon a flaming pillow. When he awoke, he could still see vividly in his mind's eye the image of that pillow reduced to ashes; it was then that he announced to us that he would die, not by wild beasts, but by fire. Though we who live in America in the 21st century need not fear that we will be martyred as Polycarp was, we can learn from his brave resolve and unshakable faith to speak the truth of Christ in love to those in power. Platonic Philosophy In Christian Theology: With Dr. Louis MarkosIn this episode of The Remnant Radio, we are talking about the Greek Philosophy Plato! Plato had an incalculable impact on western thought, but how much impact should he have on the Christian faith? Many claim that platonic philosophy was responsible for cult groups like the gnostics, because of these accusations many more have chosen to write off many of the early church fathers altogether. Why? Well, It appears that they too were infected with this platonic philosophy. But was platonic philosophy inherently evil and anti-christian, or was platonic philosophy one of the necessary preconditions that prepared for the appearance of Christ? In this highly requested theology podcast, we will be interviewing Dr. Louis Markos who is quite the expert on all things Plato. Dr. Markos has published a book with IVP called "From Plato to Christ: How Platonic Thought Shaped the Christian Faith" which is quite insightful both for the negative and positive byproducts of platonic philosophy within the Christian faith. Donate (Paypal)https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=GC2Z86XHHG4X6___________________________________________________________________________________Exclusive Content (Patreon)https://www.patreon.com/TheRemnantRadio__________________________________________________________________________________We're social! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheRemnantRadioInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theremnantradio/___________________________________________________________________________________Our Favorite Bookshttps://www.amazon.com/shop/theremnantradio___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Rowntree's Church Bridgewayhttps://www.bridgewaychurch.com/___________________________________________________________________________________Michael Miller's Church Reclamation Churchhttps://reclamationdenver.com/___________________________________________________________________________________Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classes__________________________________________________________________________________The Gospel Of Mark Group Packets https://the-remnant-radio.creator-spring.com/listing/the-gospel-of-mark-workbooks__________________________________________________________________________________Download Free Ebookhttp://eepurl.com/hSCQRvKairos Classroom: Use Promo Code "Remnant" for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classes Kairos Classroom: Use Promo Code Remnant for 10% offhttps://kairosclassroom.com/classesSupport the show

This week, the Pugsters turn to another Touchstone article by Louis Markos, this one on Owen Barfield. Barfield was one of the Inklings along with C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and helped nudge Lewis toward Christianity. He also was heavily influenced by Rudolph Steiner's esoteric thought and tried to Christianize it. In this episode, the Pugsters discuss Barfield's ideas about the relationship of human beings and the natural world, which argued that in the past people had a simple, spiritual relationship with the natural world but lost it with the Scientific Revolution. The goal, according to Barfield, is to bring the two together. On the way, the guys talk about Francis Bacon, Galileo, and whether you can keep the benefits of science and technology while losing their downsides. Tom introduces an article by Louis Markos entitled: Detectives of Significance. This article addresses an earlier time in Christian history which had a much deeper and wider view of reality and meaning. Part of the task of theology was to interpret such deeper meanings guided by the richly layered meanings communicated in the Bible and in creation. Markos then turns to detective stories, Sherlock Holmes and The Name of the Rose, to show how even rationalist characters desire something more than a narrow reading of reality. Chris and Glenn jump in with many insights into the rich web of meaning Christianity offers when seen in light of its engagement with truth, beauty, and goodness.
