My guest for this episode is legendary guitarist Phil Keaggy. Phil has joined forces with Neal Morse, ex-Genesis drummer Chester Thompson, and noted session bassist Byron House to form a new prog rock supergroup called Cosmic Cathedral. The band's debut album, Deep Water, drops April 25 from Inside Out Music. Phil was kind enough to tell me how the project came about, the making of the record, his musical beginnings and more. Cosmic Cathedral rocks, swings, grooves, and is full of all the proggy goodness you'd expect from a project involving Neal Morse. PROG SUPERGROUP COSMIC CATHEDRAL RELEASING DEBUT ALBUM FEATURING NEAL MORSE…CHESTER THOMPSON…PHIL KAEGGY…BYRON HOUSE… ZOOM SPECIAL EDITION WITH EX GENESIS DRUMMER CHESTER THOMPSON ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS   Hello everyone and we are back for another edition of Interviewing the Legends… I'm your host Ray Shasho. How do you make an album that is different to what is usually expected of you? One answer is to work with musicians who also have decades of experience and worldwide recognition, plant a few seeds, then stand back and see what happens. For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album ‘Deep Water', this is exactly what Neal Morse did, joining up with Chester Thompson, Phil Keaggy & Byron House. As Keaggy comments: “It was an honor to be invited and included in the making of the Deep Water project with Neal, Chester and Byron.” Much of the album was created from jam sessions where Morse's long-time audio partner Jerry Guidroz put the best parts together, then Morse and the band developed them into songs and epics. “Much of the album, and certainly “Time To Fly”, came directly from the jam sessions, where we were spontaneously creating in the room. Even a lot of the lyrics just came out of our mouths! It was amazing!” What resulted from all this was a more groove-orientated feel, which Morse calls a “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles” kind of album, with an unmistakable jazz fusion influence: “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it, but when Phil and I start singing it sounds like The Beatles! In Deep Water, the ‘New Revelation' section is based on a jam that turned into something that could have been on a Sting album! So, there's a lot of variety here.” And Chester Thompson says, “I am super excited for people to hear this album. There was great communication between all the players. One of my favorite projects I've ever been a part of!” And coming from someone who's played with Genesis and Frank Zappa, that's quite a statement! The album will be available as a Limited CD Digipak, Gatefold 2LP & as Digital Album. Luthier on Luthier with Michael Bashkin

For episode 100 of the podcast, I talk with the legendary Jim Olson. Jim should need little introduction to most Luthier on Luthier listeners. His guitars have been played and cherished by artists including James Taylor (you can even spot the trademark headstock "O" during Taylor's appearance on the Simpsons), Paul Simon, Phil Keaggy, Zac Brown and Patty Larkin. Though he creates some of the most valuable flattop guitars around, his build process is all about efficiency and quality control. Jim talks about how his tooling and processes have changed over the years, how Bob Taylor talked him into his first CNC, early career challenges ("I couldn't give them away," he says about his first guitars), and about the subjective nature of a "better" guitar. Link: https://olsonguitars.com Luthier on Luthier is hosted by Michael Bashkin of Bashkin Guitars and brought to you by the Fretboard Journal. This episode is sponsored by Dream Guitars and StewMac. This week we transit the Spring Equinox, the official beginning of spring and a good time to check in on the ambient space guitar. Acoustic or electric, live or sampled, looped or direct, straight up or processed, folk, jazz, or classical — even in the electronic age, the venerable six string guitar continues to make itself indispensable almost everywhere music happens. Guitarists of the Ambient persuasion take it slow, quiet, and spatially expanded, leaving the virtuosic fireworks to their rock brothers and sisters. Occasionally...a heroic rock guitarist like JEFF BECK or BUCKETHEAD will journey to the contemplative side of the instrument just to do something completely different. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a spacey, twangy, laid-back, subtle, turn-of-the-season journey for ambient guitar — on a program called SIX STRING SPRING. Music is by CHRIS HAUGEN, LISA BELLA DONNA, CLAES NILSSON, CARL WEINGARTEN, BLUE STAR, and TONY GERBER, with PHIL KEAGGY and DREAMHUB.

(Come To The Table 1996).

Dr. Chaps got to hear how one man said, "I will rock for Jesus and not for the man." This man is Pastor Caspar McCloud. Caspar McCloud is a virtuoso guitarist, singer, and songwriter, an acclaimed portrait artist, as well as an equestrian, ordained minister, and bestselling author of five previous books. A modern-day Renaissance man, the multi-talented McCloud has wowed fans and fellow guitarists with his lightening fast technique, his use of effects, a la his friend and mentor Phil Keaggy, as well as his gentle, serene, Celtic-tinged acoustic playing. Caspar's first book was his inspiring autobiography entitled "Nothing is Impossible", which includes his testimony of turning from the glittery, rock star world to wholeheartedly following Christ as a result of his longterm friendship with Phil Keaggy. The book also shares the dramatic story of his medically verified healing of an incurable heart condition. His second book, What Was I Thinking, published by Destiny Image, deals with the spiritual roots of disease and the science of epigenetics, which is the science of how thought effects physiology, through the lens of the Holy Bible. This is one of those podcast conversations that's still a little baffling to me because I'm shocked it actually happened. Let me explain. When I was a student in college, way back in the dark ages—I mean, the early 1990s—I was introduced to the music of Christian recording artist Wes King. My good friend Jeff Hogan was a guitar player and worship leader, and one day I was in his apartment on campus. He said, “You've gotta listen to this guy Wes King. He's an incredible musician.” The first song he played for me was Wes's song “Life on the Vine,” from his album “Sticks and Stones.” I was immediately hooked. From then on, I was a huge Wes King fan. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Wes released a number of incredible albums, including “The Ultimate Underlying No-Denying Motivation,” the aforementioned “Sticks and Stones,” “The Robe,” “Common Creed,” “A Room Full of Stories,” “What Matters Most,” and “Invention,” a collaboration with fellow guitar virtuosos Scott Dente and Phil Keaggy. Wes has also written songs with, and collaborated with, many other Christian artists over the years, such as Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, Kim Hill, Gordon Kennedy… the list goes on. He's known as an insightful, lyrical, and theologically-minded songwriter… not to mention a world-class guitarist. I couldn't tell you how many hours I've devoted over the years to figuring out how to play some of his songs and the crazy tunings they're in. So, you can imagine my surprise when, a few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Wes in his home in Franklin, TN, to meet him in person and record this interview. This conversation drifted to a range of issues, including his music career, songwriting, the creative life, theology, and much more. A quick note: we were not in a studio for this conversation. I used a small digital recorder, so it has a different sound than my typical Zoom interviews. But I hope you enjoy it, and much more important, I hope you check out Wes's music if you're not already familiar with it. You can also connect with him on Facebook. * * * Today's episode is sponsored by Vellum, the go-to book formatting software for indie authors who care about creating beautiful ebooks and print books. Drummer, singer, and songwriter Jerry Gaskill founded the progressive metal band Kings X in 1983. A native of Bridgeton, New Jersey, Gaskill began playing at a young age, forming a band with his father and brother and playing his first gig at the age of seven. After playing in bands throughout high school, he became heavily involved in the Christian faith and enrolled at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist dUg Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to Kings X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, Kings X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of Kings X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with Kings X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. After suffering a heart attack in early 2012, Gaskill's home was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy later that same year. Waylaid by a second heart attack in 2014, he rallied to release his second solo LP, Love & Scars. The album was released in October 2015 and featured guest spots from Billy Sheehan, Phil Keaggy, Earl Slick, and others. In this episode, Jerry talks about:    Kings X new album - Three Sides of One    Insight to Jerry's time feel    Surviving two heart attacks    Wedges over in-ear monitors    The popularity of Kings X among the musician community    Moving away from the Christian music industry in the early days    The profound inspiration that John Bonham had on his playing    Performing with Bruce Springsteen

dUg Pinnick is known first and foremost as the soulful singer and bassist for hard rockers King's X. Born in Joliet, IL, Pinnick discovered rock & roll through such greats as Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, and Led Zeppelin, while he borrowed from gospel for his singing style. When a gig backing up Christian guitarist Phil Keaggy broke up in the early '80s, Pinnick formed a new band with fellow ex-Keaggy member Jerry Gaskill (drums) and guitarist Ty Tabor. It would take several years of playing covers in bars throughout the South before the new band would click musically and eventually settle on a name: King's X. Signing to Megaforce/Atlantic in 1987, the trio became a favorite with the metal and progressive rock crowd; their music also contained elements of alternative in their hard rock, long before it became en vogue during the '90s. Pinnick is one of the few bassists of hard rock who uses a 12-string bass regularly, which is a major ingredient to the magical King's X sound. dUg sat down with Mistress Carrie to talk about the new Kings-X album, his musical upbringing, songwriting process, the bass, his inspiration, and so much more! Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

Are you feeling burdened, tired, and just plain worn out from the rat race that your life has become? I'm hearing more and more parents say that life has become crazy with running around here, there, and everywhere. During one recent conversation with a Christian parent, these words from musician Phil Keaggy's four-decade old song “A Time and a Place” came to mind. Listen to Keaggy's take on the words of Jesus in Matthew six: “Said the robin to the sparrow, I would really like to know why these anxious human beings rush about and worry so. Said the sparrow to the robin, friend, I think that it must be that they have no heavenly father such as cares for you and me.” If you're like most parents, you feel the need to slow down. Perhaps you and I can start the process by re-thinking our purpose in life as stated by the Puritan preacher, Richard Baxter: What have we our time and strength for, but to lay both out for God? What is a candle made for, but to be burnt?”

God can walk us through anything. In Cheri Keaggy's case it was the death of a parent. This episode makes me ask, how would I walk through a tragedy like that? Hopefully, as Cheri did, I would walk through it with scripture, prayer, and faith. Her testimony on how God brought the right Word at the right time is an important reminder for all of us. We limit how much the Holy Spirit can speak to us if we don't really know our Bible. In addition to comforting us during times of trials, like in Cheri's case, she also references the importance of knowing the Word of God in times of celebration. These two emotions of joy and pain are both a blessing when they are partnered with scripture and God's grace. For Cheri, those scriptures are also a guiding light in her songwriting process. Not long after arriving in Springfield, he befriended bassist Doug Pinnick and the two formed a sturdy rhythm section, backing up artists like future Petra singer Greg X. Volz and guitarist Phil Keaggy. After trying out various combos of their own, Gaskill and Pinnick were joined by guitarist Ty Tabor and the trio, then called Sneak Preview, relocated to Houston, Texas. Changing their name to King's X in 1987, they eventually signed with metal label Megaforce and released their debut, Out of the Silent Planet, a year later. A prog trio with a strong melodic bent and elaborate three-part harmonies, King's X have enjoyed a successful career with stints on Atlantic, Metal Blade, and InsideOut Music. Gaskill's contributions as drummer, writer, and occasional lead singer are an integral part of King's X's sound. In 2004, he released his solo debut, Come Somewhere, which was recorded and produced by bandmate Ty Tabor. In addition to his work with King's X, Gaskill has contributed to side projects by his two bandmates as well as albums by blues guitarist Jay Hooks and New Jersey songwriter Bob Burger. Some Things That Come Up:  -South Jersey Roots to Springfield, M), to Houston  -The Texas Guitar Center Drum Off  -Depot Warehouse Gig, 1991 -4 Decades of Brotherhood,  -Touring with Phil Keaggy -Jerry's first real drum  -Jerry and the Knights  -No Training  -2 Heart Attacks, Physicals -Kings X writing and rehearsal style  -Red Wine, Workouts -Solo Records and Solo Gigs  -Singing and Drumming  -Dogman vs. Gretchen -Yes to clicks  -2017 Namm Jam  -Dixon Drums -New Record and 2022 Tour Dates -The Stowaways   Follow:  facebook.com/JerryGaskill Twitter: @jerrygaskill   The Rich Redmond Show is about all things music, motivation and success.
