The Animal Rights discussion began when philosophers asked whether animals suffer. They do. But physical pain is one thing, do they feel emotions and grief? If a donkey does, does a spider? Author Barbara J. King, a professor emerita in Anthropology at William and Mary talks to Emil Guillermo about her research and how a knowledge of animal feelings could improve our empathy and compassion toward animals. I fell in love with Oliver's music when I heard the dreamiest sounds around via an emotionally charged sonic masterpiece, Open Season, The song was written in collaboration with Jack Milas, his partner in the Australian duo HIGH HIGHS.Oliver's music has evolved tremendously over the years, weaving in and out of the dream pop space into dance, techno, house, industrial and ultimately some of the most lovely vibey music around. His current projects, Animal Feelings, Fancy Feelings, and Jungle Feelings... (yes there are 3 different 'Feelings' projects) are wildly different and yet all of these projects have found ways to converge back on the strengths of his songwriting and approach to melody.I'm so grateful that Oliver not only gave me the opportunity to speak to him and share his thoughts with you, but that he's become my friend over the last 5 years. He's a truly special human who loves our planet and has great hopes for the world and all the species that live within it.This is my interview with the impeccable songwriter, Oliver Chang, on the Rockstar Superhero podcast.Time Codes:2:30 The music crushes my heart with loveliness4:00 Something about the complexity6:00 Some things don't work in unison8:15 Mindsets around commerce10:40 Creating a musical vocabulary13:00 Amalgams of culture15:50 Professional approaches18:50 Oliver's musical thumbprint21:30 Strong vibes and a warm bath24:40 Angular and aggressive music styles27:00 Moving all over Southeast Asia29:30 Sharing tough parts of a personal experience32:20 Lost in the background35:50 Piss takes on human destruction38:25 Playing piano on top of a mountainLondon, After The Rain (piano version) is available courtesy of High Highs/Oliver Chang/Jack Milas copyright 2016Subscribe to the shows here:1) Rockstar Superhero:Itunes: https://apple.co/3u8wlI9Audible: https://adbl.co/3sCnfSkSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3qxjQDLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3kC66WaTumblr: https://bit.ly/3ttKmzfDeezer: https://bit.ly/2Zr5lW7JioSaavn: https://bit.ly/3k29jhvCastbox: https://bit.ly/3bunV6UiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/2PKvm172) Rockstar Radicals:Itunes: https://apple.co/2OR4kVx Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3qHHFZHDeezer: https://bit.ly/3srQ3grPodchaser: https://bit.ly/2NG2UwLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3uIQVzkJioSaavn: https://bit.ly/387Y2HGCastbox: https://bit.ly/3t0yCUliHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/3vbWKFuBlog @ Tumblr: https://bit.ly/3cQqRKwWanna be on the show? It seems these mixes are highlighting more and more well-known tracks. That's not necessarily bad thing, but I used to mostly include obscure amazing tracks. I also used to have a lot more free time to listen to music. Alas, this one is still pretty damn great. The new Frank Ocean dropped this last weekend and you'll hear a few of my favorite tracks here. I saw the Church open for the Psychedelic Furs a month ago and their closing song, Miami, was the highlight of the night. Animal Collective remixed Bob Dylan (beautifully) for his birthday. Preoccupations, formerly Viet Cong, have a new album that is seriously soooooo good and the longest track on that also happens to be my favorite. I just heard this Animal Feeling track for the first time today (I try to do this on every new mix: include a last-minute, great-sounding jam that I hope will stand the test of time, though sometimes I miss on these). Cardiknox has produced one of the best pop songs of 2016 IMO. I've had this Amber Quintero on a playlist for a while. And of course, The Avalanches. Duh. Great headphone songs, all. And great commute music.BiH 54 feat Frank Ocean, Amber Quintero, Bob Dylan (remixed by Animal Collective), Preoccupations, The Church, Cardiknox, Animal Feelings ft. Nomi Ruiz, The Avalanches
On today's episode I talk to musician Oli Chang. Originally from Australia, Oli is one-half, along with Jack Milas, of the celebrated ambient dream-pop band High Highs. Since 2011, they've released a self-titled EP and two albums Open Season and Cascades. All of them are wonderful. In addition, Oli also has his own solo project called Animal Feelings! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
