How do you know if someone is lying if you haven't had an opportunity to test their loyalty? When a tribe like Lulu continually faces Tribal Council, trust gets tested with each vote. But for tribes like Reba and Belo who have yet to cast a vote, insecurities only grow as time goes on. Jeff, Jay and Rick dig into Survivor 45 episode 3 which was full of emotional highs and lows. The “Lulu losers” finally win a challenge, giving Kaleb the all-new “Goodwill Advantage” designed to forge future alliances. Speaking of goodwill, Drew's strategy of sharing his wins is paying off when Kaleb gives him the reward — will Drew come for Rick's record for advantages won? After all, it's not about how many advantages you win, but what you do with them...like Sabiyah barbecuing an idol at Tribal... Jeff also shares how they created the elaborate hunt for the Idol — despite the plans, he has no sense of how it will all play out. It's a true testament to the show's production teams, whose next-level cinematography skills bring the emotion of the Survivor experience to the screen. Originally from Southern California, John Abel has worked in outdoor education from 1984 to 2019. He has worked in many different roles such as administrative, instructional, consultative – but the bulk of and the best of his work was as a field instructor for NOLS. John has been a NOLS instructor since 1991, mainly working hiking, climbing, and mountaineering courses. He has a Master's in Leadership and Organizational Development from the Leadership Institute of Seattle. Since 2010, he has worked primarily for NOLS Professional Training,  facilitating various leadership training programs for NOLS organizational clients.  Presently, he's changing careers, moving from outdoor ed into financial planning. His goal is to provide financial planning in an empowering and client-centric way. In this episode: (02:23) John starts the interview by telling us the story behind "I can't see." As bizarre as it sounds, the story is stated back to NOLS fall semester in 1994, where his group faced a drastic turn in the weather that left everyone in three to four feet of snow. The story gets interesting when John shares how a group of students informed him that one of the students couldn't see, which led to more mysterious and thrilling events moving on.  (18:11) John gives his side of the story on the best Halloween ever. If you guys haven't listened to Andy Blair's side of the story, go ahead and listen to that first. In the beginning, Abel tells us how an instructor's robbed wallet turned the instructors being suspicious towards the whole group and all the students being resentful and upset over having a ruined experience. The course instructors planned a fun and memorable Halloween that involved witches, ziplines, and fire to cheer them up.   (27:50) He further shares one of his best days in outdoor education. John tells us how he was working in a climbing course in the late summers in the Wind River mountain range when he was tagged with a young student who wasn't too comfortable in outside activities. He talks about how a disagreement between the two lets them feel the breath of death on the back of their necks. (41:10) Later on, John shares one of the worse days of his life that he titled "Groover explosion."  He tells us about groovers, as they are attached to the toilet seats where all the human wastage is stored, but once they were full – he was left with no choice but to carry the box to an area where all the waste was supposed to be dumped. The story gets hilarious when John tells us how a hectic yet straightforward task left him covered in poop and made it the worse memory of his life. (53:55) Johns tells us yet another funny story about the toilet seat prank. He talks about how one of the instructors keeps bragging about the fact that no one ever gets away with a prank on him, which made John come up with a brilliant idea to slip a broken toilet seak into his bag pack for his next trip. He soon introduced the idea with his colleagues that later turn into a 42 vs 1, the person who had no clue that he would get the prank of his life. (01:02:29) We throw quick, intriguing rapid-fire questions at John to dig deeper into his favourite locations to lead trips and his go-to gear to take along. He entertains us more with his hilarious talk at the end of the show.

One of the major reasons I wanted to record an episode with Siobhan was to learn about how she was able to build up such an incredible air of confidence that makes her one of the most fun and authentic people to be around. Throughout our conversation, Siobhan explains how she was able to fall in love with herself after battling a mental health crisis and a breakup with a serious boyfriend. With the help of her friends, her poetry, and her wonderful dog Roux, Siobhan is able to tackle whatever hurdles come her way head on and tap back into the confidence that is one of the MANY things that makes her such a beautiful person. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/zoescurletis/support

His current projects, Animal Feelings, Fancy Feelings, and Jungle Feelings... Travelling to Nigeria on a curfew night, I met another impressive woman CEO. Each story I find, I want to do just one more! Arese grew up wanting to be a lawyer because "she talked a lot and argued a lot". However, when she went to do her IB, she became fascinated by business and economics. Arese is the founder of the Smart Money Africa platform. She breaks down financial jargon for the African Millennial Woman - through her book, podcast, speaking, coaching and, more recently through her TV Series. After working in Finance, Arese decided to make financial literacy her mission, as she was herself going through her own financial struggles. A Chanel Bag vs. a Stock Portfolio Sex and the City meets financial literacy. That is how I would describe Smart Money Woman book. I could not stop reading it and went through it in 2 days. But how was it for Arese to go from financial services to write a book? "I would never thought I would be an author. I thought it was something it was above me" Arese Ugwu When Arese started going through her own strategies to fix her finances, she decided to write about it. Her first article was called "A Chanel Bag vs. a Stock Portfolio". "I am a proud advocate of living the good life and I don't believe in shaming people for liking the things that make them happy but there's also no point in accumulating designer bags with no assets to match my spending. It's not about living like a hermit but about striking a balance, knowing the difference between what you want versus what you can afford over a period of time." Arese Ugwu, A Chanel Bag vs. a Stock Portfolio She kept the article for a few months and it was not until she showed it to a friend that he did not wait for her and sent it on for publication. After the much success of her articles, another friend planted a seed in her mind about writing a book. She thought a lot about it but she wanted a book she would like to read. Arese likes chic-lits or business books. So the idea was to marry both. As a reader, I think she nailed it. Fighting procrastination I had to ask Arese if she had tips for those (like me) that dream of writing a book. Arese had to decide the times of the day that were best for writing. She committed to sitting in front of the computer until she had 2000 words, no matter what. Some days she stared at the computer and others she went well over. But the commitment was key to fight procrastination. If she accomplished it, she would give herself treats, which included sushi or chocolate cake. As I get ready to hit newsletter #100 this coming Saturday, I know commitment is bigger than creativity. The other way to move the book forward was to "process" her ideas with her friends. According to her, they suffer a lot during her creative process as she calls up to ensure a conversation she is writing is real. But Arese does so much more than writing! Now on TV! Yes, the book is now a TV series in Nigeria. This is one of the accomplishments that Arese is most proud of, partly because it was so difficult to do. A few years ago this was an idea, and now there is a 13 episode TV series. From the original idea, Arese did a lot of research about what it would cost and how to launch it. It was hard to assess the return-on-investment on this type of project and the dynamics to make it profitable. With the support of product placement sponsors, they decided to launch. As they wrapped up the series the pandemic kicked in. After working so hard on it there was a huge uncertainty but they had to pause the launch.  It was not until months later that the project became a reality. But it still did! The start of the pandemic Arese did her book launch on March 13th and suddenly realized the event she had done amidst everything was going on with Covid-19 elsewhere. She got into panic mode and took her daughter off school before the government actually declared lockdown. She also copied the hoarding and food shopping that had happened in Europe. Which means she had a few days before everyone else did the same! The pandemic was tough on Arese to start with. She struggled with mental health. At first, she was very concerned about health but quickly went into deeper questions about life, her plan B and a reflection on how she lived her life. She put a lot of weight on, and the frustration was high. But as she worked through her mind she took control back of her life and started focused on the things she was grateful for. This turnaround was key to keep going. The business through the pandemic The business impact was mixed. The series had stopped as the pandemic hit and no-one knew how things would develop. On the other hand, coaching picked up as people were more focused on managing their finances and building for their long term financial goals. As to the publishing side, as Arese self-publishes, that side also suffered a but as distributing in Nigeria can be very challenging.  Overall, she finds the impact leans to the positive end. The pandemic thought her to be grateful and to continue refining the ways in which she serves her clients. One of the key pieces of advice she helped people see-through? As we were lockdown at home, many people felt like they would be saving money but indeed that was not the case. There was more food spending, part of it in the form of superfluous hoarding. She helped her clients see through these behaviours. What changes now? Working from home was not new to Arese. With her team, she had always worked remotely with part of them. What was new was working remotely with corporates and sponsors, who favoured in-person meetings, and ideally lots of meetings. This remote working has released a huge amount of time. So she found the team worked smoothly through the pandemic, despite the uncertainty, and was really able to pull together in such a hard time. A look into the future Arese continues to see opportunity in the future. She believes content is king (I hope so) and, if we do it right, content for Africa especially is going to be huge going forward. As such, it is important to find ways to produce more quality content and more platforms that can help it scale. "It can be the new oil of Africa", Arese claims. Another area, even if away from her, where she expects to see growth is e-commerce. The area is experiencing huge growth in Africa. People did buy online but there was a lot of distrust and now there was no option. So she finds a lot of opportunities will show up in that space. Learnings and Reflections Living with her daughter, there were many new things they started doing together, including rap. Arese always had a close relationship with her daughter but realized there were things she did not know about her. One of these was a hobby she picked up more during the pandemic. She wants to be a rapper so she sat down, wrote the songs, recorded them and tuned them during the pandemic. And she forced her mum to have dance parties! Looking back, Arese would wish she would have calmed down, stopped freaking out so much and just lean into the process, recognising this was but a season. She had to work on her mind to distinguish what was an opinion and what was a fact. She meditated 20 minutes a day. She also allowed her feelings to be present but looked into them without fear. She thrived through the high highs and the low lows. Finding a creative partner in producer Stelios, she released her debut album ‘High Highs to Low Lows’ last year. A generational voice, she’s developed a rapidly growing global fanbase and spent most of 2019 on the road. Next year she’ll join Dua Lipa on the rescheduled Future Nostalgia tour. Our emotions can blind us. They can make us believe things are better than they are when things are going well and they can make us believe everything is going wrong when we are down. On this episode I'm challenging US to check our energy, we have to stop getting so emotional. We have to stop having HIGH HIGHS and low lows. We need to try our best to keep that same energy no matter where we find ourselves in our lives

Carb Cycling is the way to go. It's a nutritional strategy with both physiological (possibly) and psychological benefits. And not only that, but during a deep, length cutting phase, it's SUSTAINABLE. But as we always like to say, "for every gimme, there's a gotcha". And with Carb Cycling? You've got to be careful your highs don't get too high, and your lows too, that you're slowly feeding a starve-binge cycle without even knowing it. _____________________________________________ FULL THROTTLE FAT LOSS - Enrollment is OPEN! Fed up with Beefcake trying to convince him that the AR in AR-15 stands for Aaron Rodgers, Da Polish drew arms and shot the studio up. Fortunately, no one was hurt due to each and every bullet double doinking off of Beefcakes microphone stand, but the remaining two segments were unable to be recorded. Da Polish is currently cooling off with a 40 of malt liquor, and we will be back in studio, Sausage free, for the foreseeable future. Needless to say, Professor thinks the Vikings will beat Greenbay, Beefcake thinks the opposite, and Rhob is rooting hard for the Lions to do the impossible; tie every game on the way to a 0-0-16 season. This is Home Studio Hustle Podcast #4 - The 4 Jobs You Can Take in Your Home Studio - Part 2 - The Money/Work Relationship   Hello Hustlers and welcome to the show I’m Mike Brown and today we’re going to be talking about The 4 Jobs You Can Take in Your Home Studio. This one is a two-parter and part 1 is already up on the blog, so head on over to homestudiohustle.com and check it out or find a link in the show notes at homestudiohustle.com/podcast.   Part one of this series focused primarily on the frequency of the gigs you’re taking. In this part, I’m going to focus on the money/work relationship.   This is exactly what it sounds like- it’s the relationship of how much money you get for a given amount of work.  This episode isn’t going to talk about HOW to price your services just yet. We’ve got that coming down the pipeline, though. (Spoiler: It’s SO much easier than you think and doesn’t require any research at all)   Because I am not a huge fan of ambiguity with this stuff, I’m going to ignore the middle of the road. We won’t be talking about medium amounts of work or medium amounts of money because they’re so subjective. Today we’ll be talking in “extremes.”   If you’re sitting down at a desk or table, I have a little bit of extra work for you to do. If you’re not, don’t worry- I’ve got you covered in the show notes.  For now do this exercise in your mind.   Take out a piece of paper and grab a pen. Go ahead and draw a square on it. Use as much space as you need. We’ll be dividing this square up and writing inside it.   Now, draw two lines in the square. One splitting it in half vertically, and one splitting it in half horizontally.   What you should have now should look like every window I ever drew on every house I ever drew.   There should be four smaller squares now. I’ll refer to them as quadrants.   Above the top left quadrant, write low, and on the right one write high.   Then do the same along the left side- low on top and high on the bottom.   The top is going to represent the payment you receive, or the “money” and the side is going to represent the amount of work it takes to complete a project.   We’re going to be talking about the pros and cons of each of these squares as well as a few types of jobs that could go in each.   The first one here is the low-low.  A low-low gig is low work and low money.  Maybe it’s a small one-off gig that you bang out in 15 mins and get $10 bucks for.   The pros of this type of job is that they’re so quick! You can fill up your schedule with them and earn a reasonable amount even though they aren’t necessarily as lucrative as other options.   Another pro to this is that if you’re constantly shifting gears, you’re less likely to get bored or burn out during your pre-scheduled studio time!  (You’re pre-scheduling your studio time, right?)   Some of the cons are that if you can’t load up on them, they don’t really make enough to support you just on their own.   Also, if you’re doing a different type of job every 15-30 minutes, it eliminates the ability to use one of the best productivity practices out there- batching.   A few examples of low-lows are: Cutting up audio for a wedding dance. Doing a sound-effect for a YouTube video Doing a few lines of voice acting for a small video game.   These are all gigs I’ve taken that take me around 15 minutes, but range from $20-$50 a pop. They’re simple and don’t require a ton of nitty-gritty work. That 80-200 dollars if I fill up an hour with 4 of them!   I’m going to reiterate here, though, that you should create your own pricing plans for your products and services. Mine work for me because I’ve figured them out. We’re going to go down a square to the High-Work/Low-Money square.   Now, at a first glance you may just assume I’m going to tell that you these gigs are all downside and just not to take them. Unfortunately, however, there are a few pros that may even outweigh the cons.   We’ll still START with the cons for this one though.   There’s one major one and it’s right in the name. You’re going to be doing a high amount of work for low pay.  It’s hard to get excited about things like this because who gets excited about making less money??? They can often leave you feeling like you didn’t get paid enough or you worked too hard.   Even for High-Work/Low-Money gigs, make sure you deliver on time and match your standard of quality! No cutting corners!   You’re probably wondering what could POSSIBLY be a pro for this sort of gig.   Off the top of my head I can think of two.   The first is that any gig that requires you to learn a new skill is almost by default put into this box.  This vastly increases the amount of work you need to do to deliver, BUT creates an opportunity for you to learn!   Let’s face it- learning is one of the most important things you can do while you’re working in your home studio as it increases your ability and efficiency for all future projects! Man if you factor that into the payment, the “money” aspect doesn’t seem so bad anymore!   Another pro to this kind of gig is that it can also be in this category if you had to buy something new in order to do the gig. Maybe the pay for the gig is just fine until you deduct the money you had to spend on Melodyne or Superior Drummer.   This expands your horizons to more and different gigs in the future.  Just like the fact that learning a new skill should be considered in the payment, so does the opportunity to add a new product to your collection!Disclaimer here:  I’m talking about buying a product for a specific gig you have. Not going out and dropping hundreds on pieces of software you will THEORETICALLY need in the future.   So what specific gigs could these be?   A few examples of High-Work/Low-Money gigs are: A Hip-Hop artist wants to track with you but you’ve never dealt with rap vocals before An A Cappella group needs you to tune up their vocals, but you don’t own melodyne yet An up-and-coming 3-piece band wants to live-track with you but your interface only has 2 inputs.   All of these have intrinsic payment in the form of knowledge! Now, knowledge doesn’t pay the bills, so don’t accept ONLY knowledge, but keep it in mind when taking or rejecting opportunities like these. Moving to the right, we’re going to talk about the High-Highs.   These are gigs that are High-Work/High-Money. Much like in part one of this series- this is what most people think of when they think about making money in a recording setting.   And I understand why! High-Work/High-Money gigs are usually fun, high-profile, and glamorous. They’re the gigs you post about on instagram so people can fawn over how cool you are.   Because of this, it’s basically all you see when people share what they’re doing with the world. These gigs are not as hard to come by as you’d think.  They just take a little bit of work to find and close.   So let’s look at the Pros and Cons of High-High Gigs!   Some pros: Uh DUH! They pay a lot!  They’re a great boon to your ability to sustain a home studio business.   They’re also usually fun! Barring a difficult client, projects like these are probably the reason you got into home studio recording in the first place!   As far as cons- they can take up more time than you’d like. They also take a little bit of work just to find the gig.   I have a tip here, though. Do you know who usually has a bunch of money to record and often no idea where to spend it?College A Cappella Groups.   This is no joke. As someone who was once deep in this world, I can tell you that my group once received $10k from our Student Government to record an album.   Now, maybe I’m lucky because Connecticut has one of the largest number of colleges per square mile in the country.  Still, even if you need to buy a laptop, a portable interface, and drive 200 miles to your nearest college or university, you can make your money back tenfold.   There are, of course, innumerable ways to get the High-High gigs so head over to the comment section of the show notes at homestudiohustle.com/podcast and let me know your way!I just wanted to share what, in my opinion, is one of the BEST ways to get High-High gigs.   Lastly, we move to the only square left- the High-Money/Low-Work.   These are obviously the Holy Grail of Studio work. If you can find them, jump at them! To be honest, I think the pros and cons are obvious for this one, so I’m not going to tediously lay them out for you. Instead let’s talk about how to find these elusive opportunities.   The first and best way to find High-Money/Low-Work jobs is going to sound like a no-brainer: If you take a bunch of High-High gigs and streamline your productivity enough, the work investment will drop so that you’re still getting paid the same, but the job is getting easier because you’ve honed your skills and abilities.   If you do ten albums for the same band, obviously the tenth will be WAY less work than the first! You know how they like their snare. You have a template saved in your DAW for their tracking sessions. You already have the mic matched to the lead singer from the last album you did for them.   This principal works for all aspects of the home studio. The more you practice the more money you make without even raising your prices!   I will also say this, though. Another, more advanced, way to get High-Money/Low-Work gigs is to utilize the principle of pricing your CLIENT rather than your SERVICES.     Since this episode is dealing less with pricing and more with broad money concepts, we’ll save this for another time- but keep it in mind. It can be a powerful tool to help you increase your profits!   So that’s it. Between part one and part two of this series, I’ve illustrated 8 total types of jobs you can take in the home studio as well as explained positive and negative aspects of each. Your homework is to go on and book a few of your own!   If you’d like to see MY hand-drawn version of the square head on over to the show notes at homestudiohustle.com/podcast. Also be sure to check out part one of this series if you haven’t yet. I’d love to hear what you have to say on this topic. We recently polled a large group of Christian moms about their prayer lives and found that many of the moms who have been Christians for a long time DON'T actually have the kind of prayer life they believe they SHOULD have. What grabbed us the most from all those responses were the moms who said, "I'm just not sure I see the value of prayer anymore. I've prayed for years and God just doesn't seem to answer me." Since she was 15 years old, author Kelli Stuart felt lead to adopt a child, but the journey toward the fulfillment of that dream was filled with very high highs and very low lows. In this episode, Kelli will be joining us today to tell her story. Our hope is that you'll be inspired by it, and find the strength you need to keep praying. So grab that laundry basket, turn on your bluetooth in the car, or pour your favorite warm cuppa something and let's dive in!

In this Episode 10: Why You Will Have High Highs and Low Lows I talk about: * how I've been feeling the extremes of either highs or lows over the past 5 weeks since my husband Ed returned from a program he did called Warrior Week *how I've felt that there was something wrong with me....why do I only feel these highs and lows?  *the realization after listening to a recent Warrior on Fire episode, that this is the way Life is if you want to live a life of Having it All *the fact that I will NEVER live a life of Vanilla, and would rather take 'risks' and do Life differently every day of the week versus follow status quo of being comfortable and 'safe' with zero growth and expansion   MORE TIP:   When you feel like in the pursuit of Having it All, pushing for more, expanding, and evolving that this is too hard....DON'T GIVE UP.  Yes, the highs will be high, and the lows will be low, but don't stop in your pursuit of Having it All, and keep grinding away and doing the work.  Every day.   Then head on over to the Women Wanting More Facebook Page (like the page if you haven't yet), and let me know what you think of this episode!  Or, hit me up on my personal Facebook Page (send me a pm to let me know that you listen to the podcast so I can accept your friend request)  RESOURCES   "I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!"-Wil Ferrell in Zoolander Warrior on Fire Episode 165: The Magic Never Happens in the Middle  Follow me on Periscope @DrKarenOsburn to continue the conversation from this episode and other random scopes I put out at least 4 times a week  Subscribe to the Women Wanting More Newsletter to get the Show Notes for Each Episode conveniently delivered to you inbox 3 times a week AND to get your More Tip to start putting what I teach into ACTION to get MORE out of your Life!  BONUS CONTENT: after the episode Periscope videos(and Blabs) are now ONLY in the Newsletter for you to watch these After-the-Show comments, rants, and feedback as I broadcast live on each show topic with viewer comments and interaction.
