    Sometimes sleep for babies can be challenging. Parents, try this baby white noise for sleep to help calm your infant. The soothing relaxation of the white noise can help a baby sleep by masking distractions from family, the tv, music, traffic or other noise sources. Many pediatricians including Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block, recommend white noise for babies. White noise resembles sounds the baby heard in the womb, which has a calming effect. The sound masking can make it easier for your baby to fall asleep and remain sleeping without being awoken by distracting sounds. White noise is safe for infants and young children. While playing white noise for babies, it's important to keep tabs on the volume, because any white noise machine, smartphone, or computer can put out levels that are too loud for your child. It's recommended to play the sound at least a few feet from where your infant is sleeping and to keep the volume no louder than the sound of a soft shower. Parents can download an app to turn their smartphone into a sound level meter. One good, free, option is the sound level meter app created by the U.S. National Institutes for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) available on the app store as the NIOSH SLM app. This episode was originally published in 2023.     In this episode, I take a deeper look at breathing and relaxation in preparation for labour — going beyond the simple advice to “just breathe” or “try to relax.” These are not magic fixes, but skills that reflect how your nervous system responds to stress, intensity, and the sensations of labour.I talk about how the modern world keeps our bodies in a constant state of alert. Our bodies are always scanning for threat, and for many of us, a slight state of tension has become normal. This affects how we experience birth, because labour is a deeply mammalian process that relies on the body feeling safe, supported, and able to drop into an instinctive state.I explain the difference between physiological pain, which is expected and manageable, and pathological pain, which indicates that something in the body or the baby's position is creating extra intensity. The baby is navigating your body's infrastructure — the uterus, musculoskeletal system, fascia, emotional state, and even placental position — and sometimes that can lead to sensations that cannot be handled by breathing alone.
