Frankenstein's Monster! Hungry ghosts! Moaning bloodsuckers! Goat draining goblins. Babadooks. Gorilla-whales. Slasher films. Body horror… and what these folk stories, films, and fandoms have to do about our hopes and fears. Also yes, you can watch monster movies as a job. Just ask the wonderfully charming and deeply informed Dr. W. Scott Poole, College of Charleston professor and author of “Monsters in America,” who teaches multiple courses on history and monster lore. We also cover: monsters on various continents, monsters as queer icons, horror vs. monsters, secret messages in monster movies, the edits that your government may not have wanted you to see, what to do if you suspect you have one under the bed, Hollywood production secrets, special effects makeup, and — as always — why we're so horny for ghouls.Buy W. Is it a bad book or the Ba-Ba-Doo-Doo-Doooooook?? We chat with Libby Hill (The Wrap) about Jennifer Kent's painful and potent allegory about grief, anxiety, depression, parenting... you know -- the BIG STUFF. We discuss how the imagery of the Babadook conveys enveloping dread, and ongoing struggles with our own Babadooks. We talk about being a caregiver without a support system, and how community and friendship can help someone out of a dark place. We also laugh and cry and talk about moms and children and the Babadook's metafictional role as a queer icon.  Follow Libby on Twitter!  Follow us on Twitter!  Buy a cows shirt on Threadless!

Ryan and Dave struggle to achieve the right tempo in discussing what is essentially The Little Drummer Boy Meets The Big Bad Wolf, Damien Chazelle's dynamite breakout film that put him on the Hollywood map. From references to color-coded feminine afflictions to the hot-button issue of gender neutrality, Ryan and Dave go on many unrelated but amusing tangents in their heat-addled attempts to give due deference to an amazing movie that showed just how horrifying it can be to achieve one's dream. Needless to say, J.K. Simmons is so scary he eats Conjurings and craps Babadooks. Next week, Dave's old buddy Moses stops by as guest reviewer to take in his choice - "The Big Sick"!
