Isolation, loss, misogyny, male fantasies, hope and despair: we've got all of the Valentine's goodness for you. What do Katy Perry, Charles Dickens, and the Bible all have in common? They're responsible for some of the most famous lines in history. And in this episode, you'll find out why.  Mark, an author and mad scientist of language, reveals the secret sauce to memorable writing: rhetorical devices. Chiasmus. Anaphora. Antithesis. Synecdoche.  Writing today (i.e. texting and Tweeting) is concise and hyper-minimal — which is fine, if you're writing the instruction manual for a new dishwasher. But the most memorable works of writing lean into the beauty of words. It's not about using overly purple prose. It's about using rhetorical formulas to create unforgettable lines, to shape ideas that stick in your reader's brain.  If you want to write something that sticks in your reader's brain — a book, a poem, a speech — then this episode is for you. When this film was released in 2008 it flopped, but at the same time Roger Ebert called it the best film of the decade, and maybe one of the best films ever made. Now, Six and Bill dive into an in-depth discussion of Charlie Kaufman's "Synecdoche, New York." They analyze the movie's complex themes of mortality, identity, creative obsession, and the passage of time. Six and Bill explore the film's surreal elements, dark humor, and emotional impact, drawing connections to works like Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and other Kaufman films. The conversation touches on the movie's challenging nature, its divisive reception, and the brilliant performances, particularly by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Six and Bill debate whether it's a masterpiece or overly pretentious, ultimately concluding that while it's a difficult watch, it's likely a great work of art that rewards multiple viewings. They also discuss the film's music, including the haunting end credits song, and how the movie resonates differently with viewers depending on their life experiences. The episode concludes with Six and Bill reflecting on the film's deeper messages about living life fully and prioritizing meaningful relationships. Their thoughtful analysis is interspersed with personal anecdotes and funny asides, providing an engaging exploration of a challenging and thought-provoking film. Happy New Year! This is a podcast. The Director's Club Podcast. Maybe you should get a coffee first before listening. A coffee and a muffin might help. Gosh I'm so tired. But what a way to start the new year. Podcasting with a wonderful person like Sharon. Then editing it. Then writing these show notes. The thing that you're reading right now. Or maybe you're not reading this, you're listening to the podcast. Wouldn't it be weird if suddenly you were on the podcast? You the listener? Sometimes it all blurs and blends together. Anyway, you're probably wondering who this podcast episode is all about. I also cheated a little this time because the first three movies, he didn't even direct. I'm talking about my favorite writer, Charlie Kaufman who is responsible for my 2nd favorite movie Synecdoche New York among many other incredible screenplays most of us know and love. More importantly, joining me for this lively discussion is the creator of the Mental Filmness Film Festival, Sharon Gissy. She's also a huge fan of Charlie Kaufman and I knew she would bring a lot of insight, passion and joy to the podcast. If you're a fan of Synecdoche, hopefully you enjoy the final minute (in other stay til the very end). In about a week, the favorite films of 2023 episode will drop featuring Patrick Ripoll and Bill Ackerman. What a way to start the year and I couldn't be happier getting to talk about the great Charlie Kaufman with Sharon. 00:00 - 10:20 - Introduction 10:21 - 32:21 - Being John Malkovich32:22 - 01:11:59 - Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine01:12:00 - 01:59:13 - Synecdoche New York, Anomalisa01:59:14 - 02:20:02 - I'm Thinking of Ending Things / Outro02:20:03 - 02:21:11 - Jim Directs You Via Earpiece Sharon's Film Festival: https://mentalfilmness.com Jim's Writing: https://5years.beehiiv.com Charlie Kaufman's Other Play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvlzjSBbYNQ

This week we're using a part to represent the whole and the whole to represent a part as Wrestling Brain's Josh Custodio joins us to go deep on the human condition with 2008's Synecdoche, New York, written and directed Charlie Kaufman, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Tom Noonan, Hope Davis and Dianne Wiest. Kaufman's directorial debut, coming hot on the heels of Eternal Sunshine, is at once an absurdist comedy and a devastating tragedy, with Hoffman giving what might be a career-best performance in a life that was full of great ones. Plus: losing faith in streamers, playing the same song on repeat, Jesus on the radio, movie-going as therapy, and how to get hooked on pro wrestling. Beyond the wider screenwriting resume of Charlie Kaufman, other works discussed in this episode include Annihilation, You Springin' Springsteen On My Bean?, Pokemon GO, Fishing with John, The Leftovers, Beau Is Afraid, TMNT: Mutant Mayhem, Bottoms, Aquaman, Joker, The Prestige, Arrival, Children of Men, Upgrade, There Will Be Blood, Beau Travail, Napoleon Dynamite, Mad God, and Walk The Line 2: Joaq The Line. If you want to watch the movie before listening to our discussion, you will have a hard time streaming it legally. So go buy it on physical media. It's a great movie, we promise you won't regret it. As filmmakers, Wes Anderson and Charlie Kaufman have distinct styles without a lot of obvious overlap, but Anderson's new ASTEROID CITY and Kaufman's 2008 directorial debut SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK share a central concern — the struggle to create art — that invites a degree of self-awareness and metatextuality that plays well with both of those distinct styles. So after attempting to pull apart the layers of ASTEROID CITY's play-within-a-play-within-a-TV-production-within-a-movie, we return to SYNECDOCHE to compare the different ends to which these filmmakers apply their respective meta moves, the ways they deploy their sprawling ideas and even more sprawling casts, and how each navigates the overlapping worlds of theater and film. Then in Your Next Picture Show, we share a few thoughts on another film we considered for this week's pairing. Wes Anderson's new ASTEROID CITY is a self-aware film about making art from a director of exacting control, which put us in mind of Charlie Kaufman's 2008 directorial debut, SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK, a self-aware film about making art from a director of exacting chaos. Kaufman is one of our most-discussed filmmakers on this podcast, as both a writer and a director, but that doesn't make parsing the immersive, shapeless, bleak SYNECDOCHE any easier. But we do our best to track Kaufman's various obsessions through the film's unconventional structure, and even attempt to unearth some moments of (arguable) levity along the way. Then the meta hijinks continue in Feedback, when a special guest calls in to put our hosts on the spot when it comes to their position on Charlie Kaufman, director.
