Au fil des pages et au cours de l'émission, il nous propose une réflexion de longue durée sur les idéologies : leur apparition, leur fonction et leur transformation dans les sociétés démocratiques. Le grand et discret philosophe y voit un outil essentiel pour comprendre comment les démocraties se représentent elles-mêmes, comment elles se projettent dans l'avenir et comment elles affrontent leurs crises actuelles. L'auteur retrace la généalogie des idéologies depuis le XVIIIè siècle, moment où les sociétés occidentales basculent d'un ordre fondé sur la tradition et la religion vers un monde où les individus doivent inventer leur avenir. Avec une année de naissance précise : 1796. Il explique pourquoi dans le livre et l'émission. Pour lui, les idéologies sont constitutives des démocraties modernes : elles ne masquent pas la réalité, elles la rendent intelligible. Elles permettent aux citoyens de se situer dans un monde où l'autorité ne vient plus d'en haut mais doit être construite collectivement. D'évidence, même si les idéologies structurent la vie démocratique, leur pouvoir demeure énigmatique. Elles inspirent les grands mouvements d'opinion, organisent les clivages, mais elles évoluent, se transforment, se délitent parfois. Marcel Gauchet montre comment leur succession depuis le XIXè siècle reflète les tensions internes des démocraties : entre liberté et égalité, individu et collectif, progrès et désenchantement. L'essai s'inscrit dans un contexte où les démocraties semblent traversées par un pessimisme profond : montée des populismes, défiance envers les institutions, fragmentation idéologique. Les analyses de Gauchet résonnent avec ce climat : il montre que les démocraties peinent aujourd'hui à penser leur propre devenir, faute de cadres idéologiques suffisamment robustes pour orienter l'action collective. Et il précise que les idéologies existeront toujours.
