Sew & So...
Brooks Ann Camper - A Wrinkled Dress

Sew & So...

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 2, 2023 48:38

A wrinkled dress changed the trajectory of Brooks Ann's career. It all began her senior year at Centenary College, where she was a theater major. She had been cast in a play and was behind the stage when the head of the department, “a brilliant, but grumpy old man,” noticed her dress was wrinkled he sent her off to iron it. When she confessed, she'd never ironed before, he assigned her—against her will—to work with him in the costume shop for the next production. “I unexpectedly just had a total blast making costumes with the grumpy old man and I found out that I really like sewing.” On a whim, she applied for an internship at Yale School of Drama, and much to her surprise was accepted. It was there she created her first dress, a big fancy bustle dress with a huge collar and lag mutton sleeves. While there, she discovered her love for pattern-making and sewing. After completing her internship at Yale, Brooks Ann received her MFA in costume production at the University of North Carolina. (2:33 - 14:45)Although she loved her time in New York, she realized that neither she nor her boyfriend (now husband) were the hustle and bustle type. Upon leaving, she took a brief hiatus from sewing. Then, at a Thanksgiving dinner, her husband's sister got engaged. She got so swept up in the moment, she offered to make her wedding dress. Then she made another, and another, and another…including one for her own wedding.  Suddenly realizing she was now a wedding dressmaker, she put together a portfolio of her designs and made herself a website. In 2009, she started a blog and really got into the sewing community. (22:14-32:58)For the past nine or so years, Brooks Ann has been teaching and blogging, where she develops her own easy-to-follow, beginner-friendly methods for creating pattern blocks. Her blogs are about custom sewing. There's no fashion formula. No fashion textbooks. She shows people how to sew for where they're at, with no sizes, no pear or apple ranges. She loves the puzzle-solving, the detective work, and the fact that she'll never stop learning new things. The best part?  Through her blogs, sewists can go on that journey with her. “It's a place where everyone can just be themselves. So it's really empowering. And it's pretty magical.”  (33:00--44:49)So what's next for Brooks Ann? Building a dream studio from a broken-down 1920 farmhouse that's on their property. This story and the many others she shares in the podcast are fascinating. Have a seat and take a listen. The best way to get in touch with Brooks Ann is to go to brooksann.com, and link to her blog. From there, you can also link to her other three websites and her bridal website. You'll also find her at brooksanncamper@Instagram.If you know someone who has an outstanding story that should be shared on this podcast, drop Meg a note to meg@sewandsopodcast.com or complete the form on our website.

Alcohol in almost any form is one of the oldest medicines known to man. On this week's show, we explore the world of high proof healing. We start with Camper English, author of Doctors and Distillers: The Remarkable Medicinal History of Beer, Wine, Spirits, and Cocktails. Camper covers everything from mystic botanicals and their monastic apothecary origins to the unusual relationship between syphilis and root beer. The conversation continues with Noah Rothbaum, who expounds on curatives that found their way from the medicine cabinet to the liquor cabinet. And then of course, there was that troublesome period known as Prohibition. That's when the apothecary filled your prescription for alcohol and soda fountains became commonplace at the pharmacy. Darcy O'Neil joins us for a conversation that may have you rethinking what you knew about the soda fountain. Finally, we visit Poppy's personal apothecary on the corner. Stephanie Haeberlin of Art Farm creates all sorts of healing and beauty products that originate in her garden on Canal Boulevard in New Orleans. We had the pleasure of interviewing Gable Price and Friends over Zoom video!“Ever since I was young, I lived with an overarching fear that the thing I was presently enjoying would lose its desired effect and fade away,” remembers songwriter and frontman of the exuberant rock outfit Gable Price and Friends, Gable Price. “When our band started and began to gain momentum, it wasn't long before I slipped into the thought of ‘What happens when this loses its steam?'” Eventually, Price came to grips with those obsessive thoughts and like any songwriter worth their weight, set it to music as the opening track, “Upside”, off the band's new album The Consequence Of Being Alive—out now via Capitol CMG. With the release of The Consequence Of Being Alive, the band is redefining who Gable Price and Friends is. With a more indie-rock sound and songs that are less spiritual and more personal to Price's life, The Consequence Of Being Alive is a lesson in forging a new path. It doesn't hurt that there are some killer album credits, too. Gable's friend and mentor Jon Foreman (Switchfoot) is a featured artist on track #8 "How It Sets You Free," which they co-wrote together with Tim Foreman. Other noteworthy writing credits include Judah Akers (Judah & the Lion) on "I Don't Wanna Live Like This" and Caleb Chapman (Colony House) on "Tough Love."Gable Price and Friends know how to deliver songs that reverberate in our hearts and souls; Price's vocal phrasing matches the emotional tenor of every song perfectly, getting inside the lyrics, dwelling in them, and then singing them with the passion of one who's lived with the joy and pain they express. The songs on The Consequence Of Being Alive showcase the band's lyrical and musical genius, providing a soundtrack to the emotional highs and lows of our everyday lives. Gable Price and Friends is a 4-piece alternative rock and roll band, with a whole lot of damage to do and a whole lot of cities to play. Currently residing in Northern California; 3 Midwest boys and a Californian—Gable Price, Cameron Pablo, Daniel Vargas, and Adam Elizararraz—continue to gain ground, turn heads and provide a euphoric live and recorded experience. From recording their demos in a garage, and Gables 1977 Camper van: “The Dreamboat,” to recently signing with Capitol CMG, the boys have no intention of slowing down anytime soon. Gable Price and Friends are known for sentimental, provocative lyrics regarding the human condition, screaming guitars and bass, with driving drums that make you wanna get a speeding ticket. This group of 20-somethings is eager for the public to hear their new record and excited to share the songs with a group of sweaty people in a venue somewhere, sometime. Keep your head straight, hopes up, heart right; and remember to be a good friend. We want to hear from you!
