We Didn't Know What We Didn't Know- Stories of Teaching Over Three Decades
We're in a Camper and Nobody AskedSue and Lisa are recording from a camper, fresh off graduation season and still handing out $20 bills. Today's topic: games — and everything that can go wrong when you play them with the people you love.Chapter 1 Cheaters, Quitters & the Guy Who Takes the Elevator Up KilimanjaroEvery game table has a type — the cheater, the quitter, the ultra-competitive, the clueless one — and Sue and Lisa have met all of them. As retired teachers, they have strong feelings about tenacity, and a Kilimanjaro story that will tell you everything about a person in four seconds.Chapter 2 Our Moms Said WHAT?!From "Wiener liquor" in the backseat to a sweet grandma being called a lying whore mid-Bullsh#! game, their moms and grandmas in this episode steal every story. Turns out the funniest game moments almost always involve someone's mother who had no idea what she was signing up for.Chapter 3 Weird Games You Need to Play ImmediatelySue and Lisa recommend Gartic Phone, Hues & Cues, Mrs. Mumbles, and the Quantum Leap same-word game — and they actually play one live on air. No equipment required, no losers, just a good crowd and low expectations.Chapter 4 Fuzzy Duck, Dog Collars & Other Things That Should Not Be LegalQuarters, Fuzzy Duck, and one electric dog collar incident that escalated faster than anyone planned. These are the games nobody teaches you — you just end up playing them at a party and hope everyone makes it to adulthood.Chapter 5 Put Down Your Phone and Play SomethingSue and Lisa want your best game recommendations — especially anything that works across generations. The Straight Stitch: A Podcast About Sewing and Other Fiber Arts.
Send us feedback about this episode!Today's guest is Brooks Ann Camper, custom garment expert, educator, and all-around joyful maker. Brooks Ann's path into sewing was anything but traditional. After discovering sewing (and irons!) as a senior in college, she went on to study costume construction, work in Broadway costume production, create couture bridalwear, and eventually develop her own approach to custom-fit garment sewing. Brooks Ann shares how her background in costume production shaped the way she thinks about fit, patternmaking, and the creative process. Along the way, she reflects on her journey from theatre and couture bridalwear to teaching sewists how to create clothing that truly fits both their bodies. Whether you're interested in pattern drafting, fit, couture techniques, or simply hearing the story of a creative career built stitch by stitch, you'll find plenty of inspiration in this conversation.Show notes for each episode: www.thestraightstitchpodcast.comMy website: www.janetszabo.comSee my sewing projects at: www.janetszabo.com/blogE-mail me! janet@janetszabo.com

A witness spends five days alone in the Arkansas Ozarks…Then the footsteps begin. What starts as quiet movement outside a remote bushcraft shelter turns into constant surveillance from unseen beings moving through the trees around him day and night. The sounds get closer. Vocalizations begin. Stones land near camp. Then something responds directly to his thoughts. In this episode, Jackson shares a lifetime of encounters stretching from the swamps of Florida to the mountains of North Carolina and deep into the forests of Arkansas. He describes a face-to-face encounter with a towering Sasquatch beside a river near Boone, unexplained activity surrounding camp in the Ozarks, and Cherokee teachings about “the Sasquatch people” and Mind Speak communication. This is one of the most intense wilderness encounter interviews ever featured on Bigfoot Society.Originally released as Episode 515 on September 2, 2024.If you listen late at night, you may not look at the woods the same way again.
Can imperfection reshape modern industry? Hella Jongerius — one of the most influential designers of her generation, and one of the field's sharpest critical voices — joins Grant Gibson to discuss craft, colour, and her enduring fascination with the messy edges of mass production. In this episode, we dive into the politics of materials and the discipline of long-term collaboration. We discuss:From Droog to Vitra: Emerging in 1993 alongside Jurgen Bey and Marcel Wanders, and what those early years taught her.Tough and Sweet: Developing her critical voice and taking aim at the design industry's obsession with newness and marketing.Materials Are Political: Why every choice of clay, textile or yarn carries weight.Avoiding the Path of Nostalgia: How to honour craft without retreating into it.Changing Industry from Within: Three decades of collaboration with Vitra, KLM, IKEA, Camper and Maharam.Colour as Communication: Why colour is a tool, not a decoration.Hella also reflects on her major retrospective at the Vitra Design Museum, running studios across the Netherlands and Germany, her fascination with animals, and exploring her spiritual side.Explore more: Visit materialmatters.design for more on our fairs and conferences.Support the show

Guests include TN Minority House Leader Karen Camper. The events of the last couple of weeks have been difficult and even transformative with more questions than answers. A Special Session was held which split the only Black district in the state (9), into three sections, redistricting and diluting the black vote. After that happened, the House Speaker stripped some House dems of committee assignments because they were disruptive. She shares her thoughts on all of it. Next, May is Mental Health Awareness Month and this is still a very serious issue in the Mid South. Travel trailers that have bunk beds built into them are a very popular choice, especially for families that love camping with their kids. But not all travel trailer builders produce products that are built with good overall build quality. So in this podcast I provide a list of the Top 3 travel trailer manufacturers and models that I can recommend for RV shoppers who want bunk beds in their RV.
For the last 7 years, my overlanding setup has revolved around a bed rack and rooftop tent. It's taken me on incredible trips, helped me learn what actually matters on the trail, and honestly shaped the way I camp and travel. But lately, I've realized my needs have changed… and that's why I'm making a pretty massive switch. In this video, I talk about why I'm moving away from my traditional RTT setup and diving headfirst into an Alibaba camper build for my Nissan Frontier. From comfort and convenience to weather protection, storage, faster camp setup, and long-term travel goals, I break down the real reasons behind the change — including some of the frustrations that finally pushed me over the edge.I also share what I'm hoping this camper setup will improve, some concerns I still have, and why I think a lot of overlanders eventually reach this same crossroads after years on the road. This isn't about saying rooftop tents are bad. I still think they make sense for a ton of people. But for where I'm at right now, I think a lightweight camper might be the next evolution of my setup. If you've ever debated RTT vs camper, are curious about Alibaba campers, or you're just interested in the future of this build, this video should give you a pretty honest look at where my head is at.Products mentioned in the video:Vevor Toilet: https://amzn.to/4wzwuENMy Top Oak Roof Top Tent-Amazon: https://amzn.to/4oVxqz8Or, if you prefer to buy direct: https://tidd.ly/4u56K1h#Overlanding #TruckCamper #NissanFrontier #AlibabaCamper #RoofTopTent #CampingBuild #OverlandSetup #TruckBuild #OverlandCamping #AdventureRigA huge thanks to my partners:Top Oak (amazing roof top tents and awnings for budget prices): https://topoakoverland.com/?sscid=51k9_mt1ba&Nitto (my Terra Grappler G3 tires are great for midwestern winters, wet weather, and all terrain use): https://bit.ly/41EJhbQZ1 Off Road (pretty much the spot for all things Nissan): https://www.z1offroad.comAll Dogs Offroad (amazing Nissan specific suspension options which I run on my truck): https://www.alldogsoffroad.comICECO Fridges (the best fridges for the money, hands down-Use code ALLTHINGSOVERLANDING for 12% off your order): https://icecofreezer.com/ALLTHINGSOVERLANDINGMoon Fab Awning (super flexible, non-permanently mounted awnings for all kinds of applications. Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube channel is back with more amazing encounters, and this time he brings us deep into the wild, unforgiving landscape of Alaska. Be sure to check out his channel using the link below. In this episode, Fred shares Ralph's chilling early-1980s encounter on the Willow side of Hatcher Pass, where what began as a routine trip to set up a travel trailer on soft breakup ground quickly turned into something far more terrifying. Ralph first believed he had spotted a bear near the treeline, but the massive figure he saw soon revealed itself to be something far more humanlike, standing an estimated nine-and-a-half to ten feet tall.Over the following days and nights, the activity around the trailer intensified with guttural growls, strange clicking sounds, older tracks, and what appeared to be a worn path leading dangerously close to the trailer window. The encounter escalated when the trailer was violently tipped onto its side during a night of terrifying growls.Ralph fired at the figure in the darkness and later discovered broken windows that had to be patched. On another night, he woke to see a large hand reaching through one of those broken windows, fired again, and then heard heavy movement across the roof. After finding stacked lumber shoved deep into the ground, Ralph finally left the property and never returned. His brother would later abandon the land as well after experiencing similar unexplained events.Fred also shares a haunting 1990s report from near the Kvichak River, where a wolf's howl was followed by the appearance of twenty to thirty wolves and a strange “Jeremiah Johnson”-looking figure. Local elders warned people not to go out alone and spoke of “hairy men” connected to wolves, adding another eerie layer to Alaska's long history of wild, remote, and unsettling Sasquatch encounters.Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube ChannelEmail BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Learn why building your own RV or Camper owner's manual is the must-do no one tells you about. We're breaking down why building this will save you time, money, and headaches on every trip plus make it easier to sell. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka ‘BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Stay Organized, Simplify Maintenance, and Boost Resale Value Anywhere You Travel Why You Should Build Your Own RV Owner's Manual If you own a camper or motorhome, the factory manual is only the starting point—not the full story. Real-world use quickly teaches you that every rig has its quirks, upgrades, and seasonal routines that no manufacturer could fully capture. That's where creating your own personalized owner's manual becomes incredibly valuable. Think of it as a living document. Alongside the official instructions, you add what actually works for you. For example, your step-by-step process for winterizing and de-winterizing—what order you drain tanks, which valves tend to stick, or how long it really takes your system to flush properly. These are the kinds of details you'll forget six months later but will wish you had written down. Maintenance tracking is another big reason to build your own manual. Keeping dates, mileage, and notes on oil changes, roof resealing, battery replacements, or appliance servicing helps you stay organized and proactive. It also prevents guesswork, which can lead to costly mistakes. Over time, this record becomes a clear history of how well the RV has been cared for. Your manual can also include a “tips and tricks” section—the little things that make ownership smoother. Maybe it's a workaround for a finicky slide-out, a shortcut for leveling, or a checklist you follow before hitting the road. These insights turn routine tasks into efficient habits and reduce stress, especially when you're setting up or packing up in less-than-ideal conditions. An often-overlooked benefit is resale value. When it comes time to sell, handing over a well-organized, personalized manual gives the next owner confidence. It shows that the RV has been thoughtfully maintained and removes a lot of uncertainty for someone new to that specific model. That peace of mind can make your rig more appealing—and potentially more valuable. In the end, your custom owner's manual becomes your go-to guide, tailored specifically to your camper or motorhome and how you use it. It saves time, reduces frustration, and turns hard-earned experience into something you can rely on—and eventually pass on. OUTDOORS FIELD REPORTS & COMMENTS We want to hear from you! Well, today's episode is a proper tale of two halves. Firstly, as David's going on a camper van holiday this summer with his family, Joe wants to know everything about it. So David settles back and starts detailing the magical ‘memory-making' trip that he's planned. But Joe's also been reading a few negative messages about the pod recently and soon diverts the conversation towards discussing those instead. Plus, there's some chat about how weird it would be to live in each others houses.
