What to know about purchasing a used RV. Learn about cruise ship life, or eyeing alligator boots—how about a hunting adventure plus TSA ID rules. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 241 What to Know Before Hitting the Road in a 20-Year-Old Class C Motorhome Buying a used motorhome can be the start of a grand adventure—or a roadside disaster. Here's what to inspect and prepare before taking off. Inspect the Core Systems Engine & Transmission: Hire a mechanic to inspect the drivetrain. Leaks, odd noises, or sluggish shifting can spell big trouble. Roof & Seals: Check for soft spots or water damage. Even a pinhole can turn into a pricey repair. Electrical & Plumbing: Test every outlet, light, and water system. A short or leak on the road is no fun. Don't Skip These Pre-Trip Checks Replace tires older than 5-7 years, regardless of tread. Flush and sanitize the freshwater system. Test brakes and lights, including turn signals and trailer hookups. Stock your toolkit: duct tape, fuses, jumper cables, sealant, and extra fluids. Lastly the biggest step before leaving on a long trip, try out the RV or camper close to home on a couple of small trips. This is so important in order to fully understand how all of the equipment works, handles on the road to even parking or leveling. Too often we are overly excited and just want "TO GO"... But that's when disaster or unwanted extra stresses or costs can come into play. So try out that "New To You" RV or Camper and hit the road! Cruise Crew Confidential: Life Aboard Ever wondered what it's really like to live and work on a cruise ship? The Day-to-Day of Ship Life For crew members aboard cruise ships, every day is different. You meet people from around the world—guests and crew alike! But crew members form strong bonds—everyone becomes like a second family. Free travel to dozens of destinations All meals and lodging provided Cultural exchange and lifelong friendships If you're flexible, hardworking, and adventurous, cruise life might just be your calling. Go here to apply for a job with Holland America, https://www.hollandamerica.com/en/us/about/our-company/careers No, Your Costco Card Won't Get You on a Plane We love Costco as much as the next person — the free samples, the gas prices, the 48-pack of muffins — it's all great. But there's one thing your Costco card can't do... and that's get you on a plane. Yep, the TSA has officially shut down the rumor that your warehouse club membership counts as a REAL ID. Despite the shiny star on the card or even a photo on your app, it's not a valid ID for flying. Period. The TSA put it perfectly: “We love hot dogs and rotisserie chickens too… but please stop telling people your Costco card is a REAL ID. It absolutely is not.” Since May 7, you now need a REAL ID, passport, or other federally approved photo ID to fly domestically. Show up with your shopping card? You might miss your flight — and no one wants that. So, pack smart, fly smart… and save the Costco card for the snack aisle, not the security line. Reference: https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/identification Boots, Bayous, and Big Gators: A Wild Texas Adventure Wanna walk a mile in your own boots? In Texas, that now includes hunting the leather yourself. Houston-based Republic Boot Company is offering a $5,000 package that comes with a guided East Texas gator hunt — and a pair of custom cowboy boots made from your very own alligator. That price tag also covers your hunting guide, firearms, tags from Texas Parks and Wildlife, and even a head mount of your gator. But you'll need a group of four or more to book the trip — and a little patience. The custom boots take about eight months to make, since tanning gator hide doesn't happen overnight. The hunts are going down this fall near Anahuac — also known as the Alligator Capital of Texas — during the short but wild gator season, September 11th through the 30th. Owner Chris Conrad says while most people associate gator hunting with the “big, gnarly” beasts seen on TV, those larger alligators typically have bigger and rougher scales that aren't ideal for leather working. Eight-foot gators are just right — tough enough for the hunt, but perfect for premium leather. So if you're ready for the full Texas experience — boots, bayou, and big reptiles — this one's for you. David Lowery is looking back while pushing forward. The brainy, witty Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker frontman just released a two-CD, three-LP solo album, Fathers, Sons and Brothers, that's a sort of musical memoir. Here he tells stories about those stories, reflecting on the recent Camper shows to mark the debut album's 40th anniversary and speculating on whether the band would have had its career if he hadn't written “Take the Skinheads Bowling.” He also discusses the almost accidental ways in which Cracker's “Low” and “Eurotrash Girl” became hits, tells whether he's surprised by which of his songs have had legs, ponders whether he and his bands appreciated the good times, notes his preference of his new album on CD or vinyl, asserts how record companies blew it with streaming, shares new song ideas and weighs the economics of recording them with Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker or on his own. Send us a textIn this can't-miss episode, Eric Rutin sits down with the queen of quirky cozies herself—Tonya Kappes! Best known for her Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery series (soon to hit the screen on Hallmark Mystery Channel), Tonya shares what it's like writing over 40 books in a single series, how her RV lifestyle inspires her fictional campground capers, and why Dottie—with her sponge curlers and sass—may just deserve her own spin-off.From bourbon martinis and body barrels to how laundry rooms became gossip hubs in her fictional world, this episode dives deep into Tonya's creative process, writing rituals, and the real-life Kentucky charm that infuses her work. She also talks about the Hallmark TV adaptation, her dream casting for Mae West, and whether she'll insist on a cameo (spoiler: yes, she will!).Whether you're a cozy mystery reader, Hallmark fan, or aspiring author, this episode is packed with inspiration, laughter, and plenty of “Dottie-isms.”

Joanna Serenko is an original singer-songwriter. She grew up in Cleveland and moved to St. Louis at a young age, where her professional career as a musician began. Joanna found her voice by performing and exploring different outlets of music, such as choir, musical theater, and singing in church. By high school, Joanna began writing her own songs and performing as an opening act for local bands in St. Louis. It wasn't long before Joanna was headlining her own shows and recording her own original music. At 18 years old, shortly after her high school graduation, Joanna got the incredible opportunity to perform on Season 18 of an international reality television singing competition, NBC's “The Voice”. During her time on the show, she worked with renowned celebrities such as Nick Jonas and the Jonas Brothers, John Legend, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, and James Taylor. This experience helped to open many doors for her music and served as a great launching pad for Joanna's long-term success in the music industry. After the show, Joanna released her debut album, “Best of Me,” available on all streaming platforms. Since then, Joanna has graduated from nursing school and now embarks on a new adventure of pursing full-time music as she tours the country. Learn more under the "2025 Tour" tab! Elizabeth Yost is one of two managers for Wisconsin Farmers Union's Kamp Kenwood on Lake Wissota. She’s finalizing the attendance for their scheduled camps this summer and organizing volunteers to get the property cleaned up for guests. There’s still time to get your kiddos signed up, but space is filling up fast for their pinecone, junior, and senior options. Yost says parents see a difference in their children when they come home from camp with increased confidence and new friends after getting the chance to unplug from the digital world. In this intimate and reflective episode, Kaleah shares a deeply personal milestone—her fifth year of living part-time in her truck camper, and the beginning of a new five-month journey along the soul path. As she prepares to leave behind the comfort of home for the simplicity of a nomadic lifestyle, she explores the deeper meanings of freedom, surrender, and soul alignment. Through powerful storytelling and honest reflections, Kaleah invites listeners into her process of letting go—not just of physical belongings, but of expectations, identities, and the illusion of control. She speaks to the emotional complexities of traveling alone, caring for her beloved cat, and trusting that life will support her as she follows the call of her soul. Rooted in the symbolic energy of the number 5 in numerology—representing freedom, transformation, and the art of flowing with life—this episode explores what it means to answer the call for change, even when the future is uncertain. With themes of essentialism, trust, and soulful reinvention, this heartfelt transmission will resonate with anyone standing at a threshold in their own life, ready to release the old and embrace the unknown. Whether you're contemplating a major transition, yearning for simplicity, or walking your own soul path, this episode is a gentle reminder that freedom lives not in external circumstances, but in the quiet knowing that you are always being guided—one step, one mile, one breath at a time. tags: truck camper lifestyle, freedom lifestyle, soul path journey, essentialism, spiritual surrender, nomadic living, midlife reinvention, following your soul path, embracing uncertainty, living simply, fifth year on the road, spiritual journey, minimalism and essentialism, transformation and freedom, trusting the journey
