Step into the lavish world of 1895, as we dissect "Gilded Newport Mysteries: Murder at the Breakers," with our special guest, Eric, who brings a critical eye to the nuances of period piece filmmaking. We grapple with the film's shortcomings, from its pacing to its acting, and how the constraints of a Hallmark budget impact the overall delivery of a historical mystery. While the setting promises a wealth of opulence, the execution leaves us pondering the potential of a different cast and the director's role in shaping young actors' performances within the rushed reality of production schedules.Navigating through the tangled love quadrangle of "Gilded Newport Mysteries," we ignite a debate over character chemistry and the leap from book pages to the silver screen, especially regarding the female lead's independence. Our discussion isn't just limited to a single title; we traverse the broader expanse of Gilded Age television, comparing fan reactions to shows like HBO Max's "The Gilded Age" and the cozy alternatives like "Miss Fisher's Mysteries." Through this exploration, we uncover recommendations for fellow enthusiasts of period mysteries and consider how historical fidelity resonates with audiences.Rounding off our episode, we voice our heartfelt concerns about the current direction of a beloved TV show, sharing the personal connections we've formed with its storylines. The episode titled "When You Were Young, the Landry Women" stirs up not only nostalgia but also disappointment in the protagonist's emotional journey and the narrative's depth. As we look to the future, we eagerly anticipate our lively group interview with the Justice Warriors, promising insights and perhaps a bit of chaos, as we continue our quest for complex characters and captivating mysteries within our favorite period pieces.Follow us on social media: Instagram: @hallmarkmysteriesandmoreYoutubeOr visit our website.

What if the mysteries we watch on television had a much deeper connection to the classic works of Agatha Christie than we ever imagined? Settle in, dear listeners, as we embark on a journey that takes us from the spookiness of our possibly haunted home, through the British countryside of Mid-Summer Murders, and right to the stylish mysteries of Australia. We kick things off with the peculiar behavior of our family pet, and the eerie occurrences that have us suggested our house might be haunted. Transitioning from the supernatural to the mundane, we put our weight behind the actors and writers currently on strike, while lambasting the studios for trying to subvert human creativity with AI. As we cross the Atlantic, we immerse ourselves in the charm of British mystery with a deep exploration of the enduring British series, Mid-Summer Murders. We look at its evolution, favorite characters, and the drinks that enhance our viewing pleasure. The journey continues with the popular show Monk, which we find bears a surprising resemblance to Agatha Christie's masterful compositions. As we head Down Under, we can't help but fall in love with the unique blend of style and mystery that is Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. A comparison with the British mystery shows and Agatha Christie's works, further enriches our discussion. We close out this intriguing episode with a fun quest, as we go on the hunt for the boots worn by Kate Cassidy in the Royal Christmas Crush movie. So join us for a fun, illuminating, and sometimes spooky adventure; a perfect blend of mystery, opinions, humor, and camaraderie.Follow us on social media: Instagram: @hallmarkmysteriesandmoreYoutubeOr visit our website. Australian actor Essie Davis is best known for “The Babadook,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.” This year, she stunned me with two incredible performances in two powerful films. In “Nitram,” directed by her husband Justin Kurzel, she plays the important and heartbreaking supporting role of Helen, opposite Caleb Landry Jones. In “The Justice of Bunny King” she broke my heart again, this time playing the house-less titular character who is desperately trying to get her kids out of foster care. It was made pre-pandemic and had a staggered release last year overseas. Look for it in select US cities and on VOD in late September. On this episode, she gives us a glimpse of what's at the core of her process. She talks about why it takes her an abnormally long time to read a script, the helpful ways Kurzel assists actors in prep, the change that occurred when she stopped “trying” and started “being,” plus much more. Jenny Wheeler: Hello there Reyna, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Reyna Marder Gentin: Thank you so much for inviting me. Jenny Wheeler: You are a former criminal attorney with the Public Defender's office who has turned into a crime writer. What made you decide to get into fiction, and how did it come about? Reyna Marder Gentin: I always felt like there were stories lurking behind the cases I had. As an appellate attorney, you're stuck with a closed record. I knew what had happened right before the crime and at the time of the crime and maybe a little bit afterwards, but I never got to see the backstory. I never really understood who these people were because I didn't have a chance to meet with them. We didn't meet our clients. We would exchange letters, but very much pertaining to the case. Those questions you have that might explain why a person does what they do, what their family was like, what their education was like, what their love life was like, all of those things were off limits. When I did end up leaving the job – and I was there for almost 18 years – I felt like I had put in my dues, but I had had enough. I felt like I was hitting up against a wall on the storytelling. I couldn't bring myself honestly anymore to try to tell the story of these people when I knew so little. Understanding 'the story behind the story' That was the impetus when I left – trying to figure out what else could I do with my time that might be related but would allow me to explore things about the defendants, about the judges, about the prosecutors, about the defense attorneys, things I couldn't do in real life, but I would be able to do in fiction. That is the genesis of how it started to happen. The actual way it happened was that I quit my job. I had no idea what I was going to do next, and a friend told me she was taking a writing class and invited me to come along. I went with her, and it all sprang from there.

Phryne Fisher's niece Peregrine has inherited her aunt's fortune after growing up in a trailer park. And she joins forces with other women who refuse to be held back by their gender to solve crimes. Playing Peregrine Fisher is actor and singer/songwriter Geraldine Hakewill. Before she took on the 60s miniskirts, she was best known for a contemporary Aussie TV drama called Wakefield, set in a psych ward. But Geri tells Lynn Freeman she was a fan of the original Miss Fisher mysteries, and she's also fallen in love with the whole 1960s vibe. Episode 27 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Kate Dennis. With today being International Women’s Day, it’s a most appropriate day to release my conversation with the uber talented screen director, Kate Dennis. Starting out as a camera assistant, then focus puller and script supervisor for many years, Kate’s credits include the massive hits films Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Cliffhanger and Babe. In 1996 Kate was offered to direct an episode of the TV series Twisted Tales for producer Bryan Brown, she hasn’t looked back and is now one of the most sought after international screen directors. Kate has set-up seven TV dramas in the US, UK and Australia including HBO’s Run (working with Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Tommy (with Edie Falco), New Amsterdam (which is going strong after 5 seasons); Secrets & Lies (which starred Juliette Lewis & Ryan Phillippe in it’s USA remake) and Australian TV phenomena Offspring, which ran for seven seasons. Kate’s episodic work in the US traverses broad genres from comedy to drama and includes: GLOW, The Tick, Heathers, Strange Angel, Krypton, Damnation, The Mindy Project, Preacher, Turn: Washington’s Spies, Fear of The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow and Suits. Her Australian directing work includes: Rake, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Rush, The Time of Our Lives, The Secret Life of Us and Love My Way. In 2017, Kate’s episode ‘The Bridge’ from The Handmaid’s Tale, was nominated for an Emmy award for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series. Kate remains a down-to-earth Aussie and makes it her job sound rather simple, however it’s taken decades of hard work in the high pressure hot-seat of directing big-budget series to earn her place at the top. There are very few aspects of sex that people across the Internet can agree on, but the opinion that riding *eggplant emoji* or “plas-dick” can be exhausting gets a universal head nod in agreement. So how can we maximize the experience for everyone involved? And how did pleasure expert Tyomi Morgan create a tight-knit community around that pursuit?   Indulgence Nichole recommends soothing murder mysteries: Murder, She Wrote, Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and Death in Paradise.    Guest Tyomi Morgan is a certified sexologist and pleasure coach based in Chicago, and is the founder of Glamerotica 101. Every episode, Nichole explores something that people love—whether it's needlepoint, watching bad movies with friends, or cowgirl exercise classes—and asks experts and devotees why it makes them happy. She ends each show with an Indulgence: a recommendation listeners can enjoy with no remorse. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure when you learn to love it freely! Brave New Women hosted by Cecilia Poullain Kate Dennis, TV and film director was nominated in 2017 for an Emmy® for Outstanding Director for a Drama Series for her episode of the Handmaid's Tale, ‘The Bridge' .  She talks about why filming The Bridge was so hard to pull off and why it was so special.  She talks about how she became a director.  She talks about the nitty-gritty of being a director and her current film projects which are adaptations of "Almost French" by Sarah Turnbull and "All That I Am" by Anna Funder.  We talk about her interest in telling stories about human tolerance and the human condition through a more intimate lens.  We deep-dive into what it means to listen and how time stops us from understanding others as much as we would like.  She talks about being a woman in the film industry when she first started and it was very male-dominated and now, when being a woman is an advantage.Kate Dennis has set up seven television dramas in the US, UK and Australia including Offspring which ran for seven seasons, garnering over 40 awards and nominations. Her episodic work in the US traverses comedy and drama and includes: The Handmaid's Tale; GLOW; The Tick; Heathers; Strange Angel; Krypton; Damnation; I'm Dying Up Here; The Mindy Project; Preacher; Turn: Washington's Spies; Fear The Walking Dead; Sleepy Hollow and Suits. She began her career as a camera assistant and later script supervisor on Priscilla Queen of the Desert; Babe; At Play in the Fields of the Lord and Cliffhanger. Her Australian directing work includes Rake; Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries; The Time of Our Lives; Rush; The Secret Life of Us; and Love My Way. From 1997 to 2002, Kate was based in London and developed two features, co-wrote Superstition  starring Charlotte Rampling, and directed 2nd unit on Gregor Jordan's Buffalo Soldiers (starring Joaquin Phoenix). Kate has been nominated for an ADG Award three times for her work on Love My Way (2007), Rake (2012) and Secrets & Lies (2015). I am running a free webinar - "Women Empower Women" - on Tuesday 27 April.  Check it out here:  https://mailchi.mp/ac893611d578/gu7xgku6p7I would love to hear any comments you might have on this episode and respond to any questions.  You can find me on the Brave New Women Facebook page, on Linkedin or on my website:  www.ceciliapoullain.comCecilia PoullainFounder of Brave New WomenCoach - Empowering Women to Find their VoiceMusic:  Stephen Marquis www.songsta.com.au Editing: Talal BourokiCecilia PoullainFounder of Brave New WomenCoach - Empowering Women to Find their Voice
