Any takeaways from this episode? We all say we know what boundaries are… but let's be real: most of us weren't taught how to actually set them—especially in relationships. In this episode of RomCom Rescue, we're breaking down the beautifully messy world of boundaries in romantic comedies. From the iconic (and sometimes problematic) classics to modern love stories that finally get it right, we're unpacking how Hollywood has shaped our understanding of what's romantic—and what's actually just...a boundary issue.
Au menu cette semaine: Captain America: Brave New World, Vil et misérable, The Room Next Door, Écho à Delta, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Vous n'êtes pas seuls, La bataille de Saint-Léonard, Brain Freeze, The Big Sick et bien plus.
Things have been a little tough in Los Angeles this month, so we are bringing you our first ever Dead Pilots Society Rerun. This is one of our all-time favorite episodes. From way back in 2020, it's Eternally Yours from Joe Port & Joe Wiseman (Ghosts, The Office, New Girl), about a family of normal looking but emotionally closed off, stuck-together-for-eternity vampires. If you think there's no fresh spins left in the vampire genre, you need to listen to this one. Eternally Yours was recorded live at The Improv in Hollywood and stars Ed Weeks as Charles, Briga Heelan as Liz, Asif Ali as Max, Vella Lovell as Emma, Tony Cavalero as Jesse, Yassir Lester as Benji, Matt Walsh as Mort/Sigmund Freud, Mindy Sterling as Phyllis/Woman/Kristen Stewart, Brendan Scannell as Steve The Blood Guy/Man, David Fumero as Henry, and Andrew Reich with stage directions.
During the most recent adventure of Little Kids, Big Hearts, "Fairness with Vella Lovell and Meredith Holzman," three kids — Bodhi, Aubrey, and Will — travel with LKBH host Todd Loyd to the Land of Qook-a-lackas to help two Qook-a-lacka friends "qook-a-late" to retsore fairness to the Land. Today, we're back to challenge our listeners to go on their own FAIRNESS QUEST, inspired by the episode and the words/actions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — whose legacy of justice, equality, and human rights we celebrated this week. Todd and LKBH Producer Christy Pusz Decatur issue our first-ever challenge our listeners to (1) notice something that seems unfair, (2) think about ways to help, and then (3) take action to help someone else feel included, valued, or supported. This is our first-ever challenge episode, and we'd be overjoyed if our listeners could take a moment to share how their families interpreted the fairness quest with a few words or a picture! You can share on instagram (@little_kids_big_hearts_podcast), facebook (@LittleKidsBigHeartsPodcast), or just email us: podcast@playsparkler.org. Following the MISSION, turn up the volume and sing/dance along to a brand-new Little Kids, Big Hearts original song: When Something's Unfair. It's written by amazing educator/composer Benjamin Weiner and performed with Benjamin PLUS Vella Lovell, who played Principal Quella in our fairness episode. Vella currently appears on the Fox comedy Animal Control alongside Joel McHale as “Emily.” Other credits include Mr. Mayor, Crazy Ex Girlfriend, Accused, A Clüsterfünke Christmas, She Ra And the Princesses of Power, Kiff, The Big Sick, Dollface, Girls, Younger, Grace and Frankie, As We See It, Your Place or Mine. On the stage, Vella has appeared in plays at The Geffen Playhouse, Yale Rep, The Public Theater and Williamstown Theatre Festival. She graduated from @nyutisch and @juilliardschool.Learn more online at: https://playsparkler.org/fairness/

Her work has screened at many festivals in the U.S. Artist Unknown is her debut feature film and has won numerous awards, including the Jury Award at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, Best Feature at the Broad Humor Film Festival, and Best Narrative Feature at the Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image. She is a graduate of The New School, where she studied film, fine arts, and Spanish. In addition to acting, she is also an artist and DJ based in New York City. The very funny Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals, The Big Sick) kicks off The Spiel by talking about not only one of the best Steven Spielberg movies, but one of the flat out best movies ever made: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Kumail, Vespe, and Wampler dig through this supernatural action adventure masterpiece, pick their favorite moments, reveal some secretly amazing screenwriting and filmmaking details, discuss some bizarre alternate casting ideas, and try to figure out what the secret sauce is that makes Indiana Jones such a cinema icon. Laughs, insight, questionable topic choices... in short, the perfect kick off for The Spiel.

This episode contains: All three of your co-hosts are back to prove that 500 is just another number. We recorded on Rex Manning Day (you know, from Empire Records) and we missed First Contact Day (you know, from First Contact). Nobody remembers the Genetics Wars (you know, from nothing at all), or was it the Eugenics Wars? But you know what it really was today? It's the Great American Eclipse! “I actually live in the path of totality” - Devon, and like several thousand more people. What kind of bedlam and absolute riot would there be at a ren faire during an eclipse? Shouts of “BURN THE WITCH” and whatever. Ben didn't record last time because he had date night in the middle of Spring Break. Date night did NOT include seeing Dune, but did have terrible service, cold tacos, rain, and allergy medicine. Steven traveled to DisneyLand again (does he, like, live there now?) and there's been some major updates to the tech in the queues for rides. Even with the new games you can play on your phone while waiting for the rides, the Peter Pan queue is just too skinny (it was made for people in the 1950s, and I guess we didn't have an overweight problem in the US back then). Steven's ready for war to never change, cause this upcoming week is the new Fallout TV show. You lucky dogs, reading this in the future… you've probably watched it all, haven't you? Death comes for us all and other light musings: What happens in the brain during the process of death? A woman named Patient One who suffered cardiac arrest became the subject of a study by neurologist Jimo Borjigin. When Patient One's brain activity was monitored after being taken off life support, unexpected electrical activity was still detected. Devon goes through the historical context on scientific interest in near-death experiences (NDEs) and consciousness after clinical death. More recent technological advances have allowed many more people to be resuscitated after cardiac arrest, providing new opportunities to study what happens in the brain during the dying process. Science may be on the verge of new discoveries about death, consciousness, and the relationship between the mind and brain. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2024/apr/02/new-science-of-death-brain-activity-consciousness-near-death-experience This odd mindset shift regarding death could cure procrastination forever: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC4jcrB4RHc What does an eclipse sound like? Once upon a time, there was light in my life / But now there's only love in the dark. (Ben sings it!) An app called Eclipse Soundscapes was developed to help blind and visually impaired people experience solar eclipses. It provides audio descriptions of the eclipse's progress matched to the user's location, and also includes recorded sounds of animals reacting to the dimming light as if night has come, and a "rumble map" feature allowing users to feel the eclipse's stages through vibrations on their smartphone screen. The app aims to make the experience of the eclipse more accessible through multiple senses. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/innovation/what-does-eclipse-sound-180964203/ https://eclipsesoundscapes.org/ https://apps.apple.com/us/app/eclipse-soundscapes/id1262152991 Science fiction: Netflix's Three Body Problem has dropped, and it's so Game of Thrones in the best way. Ben presents Star Trek episodes 909 and 910. That's right, Disco is back, baby! And it's a wild Indiana Jones adventure this season, with strong ties back to a Next Generation episode that really should have been revisited a long time ago. Even though Devon and Steven poo-pooed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire last week, Ben saw it, and he LIKED IT. Kinda weird Ben wasn't excited about Ghostbusters: Afterlife before Steven gave his review of it all those years ago, and this time the tables have flipped. Kumail Nanjiani steals the show in the new Ghostbusters, but have you seen him in The Big Sick? Devon recommends. How do you like the new Science Faction website? It's actually legible! https://sciencefactionpodcast.com/ Next week our book club will cover Just Out of Jupiter's Reach (The Far Reaches collection) by Nnedi Okorafor. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C4QR4SX7

It's a February special on The Wait for It Podcast, and we're all about the laughs and love as we unravel the genre of romantic comedies, starting with this gem that's very close to PhilTheFilipino's heart. From its true-to-life narrative to the cultural complexities it so eloquently portrays, "The Big Sick" offers a distinct take on a genre often criticized for its predictability. As we continue our journey, we turn the spotlight on the authenticity of romantic comedies, and how they shape our expectations of love and relationships. We draw parallels between the fantastical and the realistic, and discuss how other movies like "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" straddle that fine line. Delving into what makes a rom-com stand out, we consider the evolving landscape of the genre, and how films that resonate with us tend to offer a slice of relatable life amidst the idealism often presented on screen.Wrapping up our heart-filled episode, we share a preview of our watchlist, packed with diverse titles that promise to keep the conversation lively and insightful. From the comedic darkness in "The Big Sick" to the impact of the Apatow era on rom-coms, we cover it all. So, whether you're a hopeless romantic or a comedy aficionado, join us, Phil and Eric, on this engaging expedition through the delightful world of rom-coms.IMDb Synopsis: Pakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.
Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, Silicon Valley) joins us again on the podcast after several years to reflect on his career taking off with The Big Sick, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Welcome to Chippendales - along with the untenable anxiety that came with it. Kumail is really open about how he has misguided priorities after The Big Sick and why he was used to associating work with stress. We also talk about his friendship with Dave Bautista, disappointment with Eternals, and getting back into standup. Thank you to our sponsors: ❤️ Betterhelp: https://betterhelp.com/inside

This week on the show we are joined by Hannah Smith to share her own curated Triple Feature! Listen as we discuss Freaky Friday (2003), Inside Out, and The Big Sick, both as individual films and as compliments to each other. As we go we learn a lot about each other, such as why one of these movies gives us PTSD and when the worst (best?) time to watch Inside Out is. Our question of the week: "If they made “Inside Out” about you, what would be 1-3 of your islands?” Have thoughts about this topic? The Big Sick is the real life telling of Kumail Nanjiani, a comedian who fell in love with his now wife Emily Gardner. Not only does this story include some culture clashes they experience in their relationship but the story ramps up when Kumail has to make a critical decision. Emily contracts a mysterious illness and Kumail has to give the hospital permission to put her in a medical induced coma. In come the feisty parents to question Kumail and his motives about their daughter. Zoe Kazan portrays Emily in a fun and playful way. Holly Hunter and Ray Ramono are brilliant as her parents. The film came out in 2017 and was written by Emily Gordon and Kumail and is directed by Michael Showlater. Welcome to another installment of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast! This is Episode 342 and, each week, we're edging ever closer to April 2023, which will mark the 12th Anniversary of this show. I'm your every-other-weekly host, Marc Hershon, and I want to thank everyone who has taken time out to Venmo us donations to help keep this show going! Our grand total since first announcing that we'd be accepting funds through Venmo a couple months back is…zero. Zip. Zilch. Apparently you guys aren't really fans of commercial-free content — and no, I don't count our phony Henderson's Pants ads — so we'll stop beating the Venmo drum. Instead, this week starts my concerted effort to find this show some REAL paying sponsors. A lot of the shows that we feature clips from have them, so why shouldn't we? It's high time that me and our co-host, Tyson Saner, start to see some kind of return for cranking this thing out every week. (So, if you're interested in sponsoring Succotash, just email our sales team at ads@succotashshow.com.) The aforementioned Tyson was here last week with Epi341, a show entitled “Cartoons, Shakespeare & Tinseltown”, a show that included a trio of clips from The Bancroft Brothers Animation Podcast, Willy Shakers, and The Hollywood Experience. You can still grab that handful of Succotash from your favorite soundcast distribution points, including Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Amazon Music, and so many others, not the least of which is our homesite, SuccotashShow.com. That's also where our archive lives, with over 11 years of clips n' chats. I myself have a “February Foursome of Clips” in store for you in this episode. We'll be hearing from Extra Nuggets, Hollywood Gold, and The Downside, as well as from a show that we've featured before, one of the hosts is not just a friend-of-Succotash but a close personal friend of mine, and that I have appeared on several times including just last week. It's Monster Party and we had a great time talking about…well, you'll hear it when you jack into the 'sode. This week's installment (until we can find some sponsors with some real money to bring to the table), is brought to you by Henderson's Pants timely Parka Pants, just the stuff to keep your chilly getaway sticks from snapping off in the cold. CLIPS Monster PartyLet's get this Succotash party started with what I was just talking about a moment ago – the Monster Party soundcast! The four gents behind this show came up with this idea when they were crashing in a hotel at the San Diego Comic Con a number of years ago. As they partied and got increasingly blotto, their discussion turned into a loud argument about what monster or sci-fi or superhero or action movie, TV show, or comic book was better than the others. Realizing this was a nerd idea sure to get them laid, the fab foursome — Matt Weinhold, Shawn Sheridan, Larry Strothe, and James Gonis — kicked off their show. I've had the pleasure of being a guest a number of times and just last week was the latest. Their topic: Superhero Obscura. Namely, digging up some of the most forgotten and unknown comic book heroes ever to don a cape. Since I was the guest of honor, I sliced out a snippet where I talked about the mysterious and forgotten…Captain Marvel! No, not that one. The other one. No, no, the OTHER one. Never mind. You'll see… Hollywood GoldAt a couple dozen episodes under her belts, the host of the Hollywood Gold soundcast, Daniela Taplin Lundberg — a movie producer in her own right — interviews other producers and filmmakers to help us look under the hood of some of the films we know and love. I grabbed a clip from an episode that dropped last month where she focued on the movie The Big Sick, written by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, which was a fantastic, kind-of-surprise hit six years ago. SIX years ago? Yes. 2017. Crazy. Anyway, she caught up with her old friend and the director of the movie, Michael Showalter, to deep dive into how this movie got made. The clippage is about some of the casting of the film and the process of getting it down in the funny, touching, sweet style that he did. Extra NuggetsEven as the soundcast ocean continues to fill with thousands upon thousands of shows, I'm amazed at how inventive so many soundcast creators have gotten at finding that little niche, that undiscovered nugget – if you will – of a subject or fodder for a new soundcast. Nugget is exactly the right word for this next clip, which comes from a relatively new show. So new, in fact, that they only have about a dozen episodes dropped at this point, going back to October of last year. The hosts are Dan Rubenstein and Adam Amin. Dan's one of the brains behind the Solid Verbal Media soundcast network, and Adam is a sports announcer with Fox Sports. The hook to their show Extra Nuggets is to take categories from old Jeopardy shows and challenge each other to answer them. But it goes beyond trivia. They only tackle a couple of categories an episode because every answer leads into some extra nuggets of information behind the topic. On a recent drop, one topic was “Historic Planes”. See how much of this stuff you know… The DownsideOur final clip for this episode takes a kind of cynical look at the world around us. Or at least around host Gianmarco Soresi. He's a comedian and a “lifelong cynic”, according to the show's description and it seems when he brings in a guest who's not a stranger to cynicism, like the amazing droll Todd Barry, the level of cynicism goes up exponentially. Here the guys are talking about when Todd started out doing standup back in Miami. Tyson Saner will be here in this same feed next week with Episode 343 and some entertainments for you. So grab yourself some of that. And, if by some chance you're flying high over American soil, somehow having found yourself attached to a Chinese spy balloon, and an Air Force fighter jet scrambles by and the pilot yells out of the cockpit at Mach 2 “Have you heard anything good lately?”, won't you please pass him the Succotash? — Marc Hershon
Director Michael Showalter recounts the path to Sundance history with The Big Sick. After working with comedian Kumail Nanjiani on his previous film, Showalter read the script Kumail and his wife Emily V. Gordon wrote about how their relationship overcame both cultural clashes and a mysterious illness, and knew he had to direct it. Encouraging honest and organic performances from his actors is a Showalter specialty, and the combination of a great script with brilliant improvisation made for on-screen magic. The film premiered at Sundance where it sold for a record-breaking number, and remains a culturally important film that asks what it means to be an American.
This week I spiraled out with film, television & theater actress, and incredible singer Kuhoo Verma (Plan B, The Big Sick.) We talked about how being roasted can feel like being loved, undiagnosed childhood ADHD and punk rock ADHD hacks, the difference between real vulnerability and the performative kind, and so much more. Plus, Kuhoo tells a shame story about a seemingly small but horrifying elementary school moment, and REAL TIME realizes how that one moment still shows up in her life today.
