Mother Mary SPOILER'D | Ending Explained, The Red Spectre & Why It's The Best A24 Film of 2025Full spoilers for Mother Mary (2025), A24's gothic psychological drama from director David Lowery, starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel.Jose and Mike go deep on the entire film — the true meaning behind the Mother Mary / Joan of Arc persona, the red satin spectre and what it symbolizes, the FKA Twigs seance sequence, and the breathtaking final image that brings it all home. If Possession, Black Swan, The Babadook, or Bram Stoker's Dracula hit for you, this film belongs in that conversation: It's a story about creative partnership, female friendship, betrayal, and the unresolved trauma that lives in the space between two people who were once everything  to each other.- - - - - - - - - -WE ARE WATCH SKIP PLUS!FOLLOW/LIKE/SUBSCRIBE/REVIEW/LOVEEmail us: WatchSkipPlus@gmail.comBe kind. The much hyped Undertone is here so what did it get so right and so wrong?I'm here to take you through the entire plot, trailer, posters and all the missed opportunities.Undertone is a 2025 Canadian supernatural horror film written and directed by Ian Tuason, in his directorial debut. The film stars Nina Kiri as Evy, a woman who hosts a paranormal podcast with her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco), where she is the skeptic to his believer. After Evy moves back home to become the caregiver to her dying mother (Michèle Duquet), she and Justin are sent recordings of a married couple (Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung) experiencing paranormal noises in their home, drawing Evy into fear and paranoia.Evy and her mother are the only characters to be shown on-screen in the film. All other characters are heard as off-screen voices, thus conveying the film's horror through its sound design.Undertone premiered at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27, 2025, and was theatrically released in the United States by A24 on March 13, 2026, and by VVS Films in Canada. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was a box office success, grossing $20 million against a budget of $500,000.The film was inspired in part by Tuason caring for his parents in the early 2020s as they faced terminal cancer. It began as a radio play before evolving into a film screenplay that incorporated some of Tuason's own experiences, and was shot in his own childhood home. The film was shot in February 2025 with production taking place in Rexdale, a neighbourhood in Toronto, Canada. Tuason said, "I'm relying entirely on the audience to make that up in their own head. Because I thought about hiding stuff like Mike Flanagan does. But then I watched The Babadook, and I just saw a jacket hanging on an old rack, and I said, 'That's enough. I won't do anything. I'll just hang a jacket on a chair.'"Chapters00:00 Introduction01:14 Reviewing Undertone03:15 Undertone Plot (SPOILERS)14:15 What Undertone Got RIGHT16:22 What Undertone got WRONG18:36 The Posters19:31 Trailer20:52 Missed opportunity to do a tie-in podcast series22:04 Final verdict and score22:53 Thank you for watching23:20 Backmasking examplesFollow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Facebook↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Shop our Store!↪ Tip us $5↪ Linktree↪ Letterboxd#undertone #a24 #iantuason #blumhouse #ninakiri #adamdimarco

This week, Chris and Tony open the pages of The Babadook (2014), a chilling psychological horror that proves some monsters don't stay on the page. When a widowed mother and her troubled son discover a strange children's book about a sinister figure known as the Babadook, their home slowly becomes a place of dread and paranoia. As reality begins to unravel and the presence of the Babadook looms larger, the line between grief and terror starts to blur. Is The Babadook the modern horror masterpiece many claim it to be, or is the real horror something much closer to home?

Shot over three years with a crew of three people and made for under seventy thousand dollars, Good Boy became a theatrical and streaming success, earning over $8 million at the box office, mostly due to its inventiveness, emotional depth, and commitment to a single, bold idea.In this episode, Ben tells us the whole story behind Good Boy, from humble beginnings to box office breakout. He also gets into the details behind shooting horror from a dog's point of view, the critical importance of sound design in horror, and the practical lessons he learned while shooting more than four hundred days with his dog Indie. Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Ben Leonberg.Limitations can be a feature, not a bugBen's process making Good Boy was a masterclass in embracing creative limitations. From directing a dog who couldn't take cues, to shooting without a traditional crew, all while working within a $70,000 budget, Ben built the film around his constraints instead of fighting them. He followed the classic Robert Rodriguez rule: write the movie around what you already have. In Ben's case, that meant a dog and an old cabin. He and his wife shot most of the movie themselves, structuring the entire production around their available resources. The mindset of designing a film around what you can uniquely do is a powerful model for indie filmmakers. In Ben's case, those constraints led to a strikingly original idea: a horror movie told entirely from the perspective of a dog. That single choice shaped every creative decision; camera height, lensing, blocking, editing, sound, and pacing. What began as a limitation became the film's identity.Sound is vital for horrorAs we've covered many times, in horror, sound goes a long way, and Jennifer Kent, Director of The Babadook, even says it's just as important as your visuals. In Good Boy, which had minimal traditional exposition or visual cues, sound became essential—not just for scares, but for tone, tension, and atmosphere. Composer Sam Boutilier went so far as to build a custom instrument to create the film's signature eerie, otherworldly tones that had never been heard before. For horror filmmakers working with limited budgets, sound design isn't just a finishing touch but an opportunity to elevate the entire film.A long production timeline can be an advantageThe film was shot over three years, across more than 400 shoot days. With such a small team and total control over gear and scheduling, Ben was able to work slowly and deliberately, testing ideas, reshooting scenes, refining edits, and evolving the movie over the course of years. In most productions, time is the scarcest and most expensive resource. But when you own the entire timeline, time becomes your biggest asset because it gives you the space to problem-solve creatively, discover better choices, and polish your film beyond the limits of its budget.Show NotesMovies MentionedGood BoyPoltergeistThe ShiningPsychoJawsRaiders of the Lost ArkDuelDrag Me...

Horror movies are big business: this year, they've accounted for more ticket sales in the U.S. than comedies and dramas combined, bringing in over a billion dollars at the box office. And the phenomenon goes beyond a hunger for cheap thrills and slasher flicks; artists have been using horror to explore deep-seated communal and personal anxieties for centuries. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz, along with the New Yorker culture editor Alex Barasch, use three contemporary entries—“The Babadook,” “Saint Maud,” and “Weapons”—to illustrate the inventive filmmaking and sharp social commentary that have become hallmarks of modern horror. “In the past, the horror would be something external that's disrupting a previously idyllic town or life. Now there's a lot more of: the bad thing has already happened to you,” Barasch says. “You already have a trauma at the beginning of the film—or even before the film begins—and then that is eating you from the inside, or trying to kill you, and you have to grapple with that.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“The Babadook” (2014)“Rosemary's Baby” (1968)“Scream with Me,” by Eleanor Johnson“Hereditary” (2018)“The Substance” (2024)“Saint Maud” (2020)The “Saw” franchise (2004—)“The Exorcist” (1973)“The Case Against the Trauma Plot,” by Parul Sehgal (The New Yorker)“Weapons” (2025)“Barbarian” (2022) “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” (1974)“Get Out” (2017)“Alien” (1979)“The Blair Witch Project” (1999)“Talk to Me” (2022)New episodes drop every Thursday. Yes, Political Beats finishes its two-part celebration of the career of Tom Waits, rejoined by doughty boatswain Damon Linker as we pilot our way to unknown musical seas. Tom Waits had a fine career up through the year 1982, when he finished work on the soundtrack for Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart. But we're talking about the man primarily because of what happened afterwards, when he became more than just a down-and-out jazz pianist with the voice of a Babadook. Waits met script supervisor Kathleen Brennan on the set of the film and fell in love, marrying a year later. (They remain married to this day.) Proving herself the anti-Yoko Ono, Brennan then alchemically helped to raise Waits's music to an entirely new level of excitement and experimentation. His lyrics ideas become weirder, and more vivid. His ballads become infinitely more heartfelt (most of them are secretly addressed to Brennan). And his arrangements become a world of their own: Tom Waits begins, in 1983, to create glorious junk sculptures out of sound, using uncharacteristic (often minimalistic) instrumentation to create music that nobody has heard before.Through such landmarks of the 1980s and 1990s as Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Bone Machine, and The Mule Variations, Tom Waits transcended his balladeering origin -- without ever leaving it entirely behind -- and created a body of work famous for its eccentric, compelling, and deeply influential series. Once you get past the fact that he has a voice like the sawblades of a lumber mill, entire worlds will open up to you. Click play and clap hands! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent, expanding on her 2005 short Monster in her feature debut. Starring Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, it follows a widowed mother and her increasingly unhinged son as they confront a mysterious, top-hatted entity that may—or may not—be grief in a trench coat. Look, we'll do our best not to dwell on the unfortunate parallels to Hereditary, but they need to be addressed (and yes, we know THE BABADOOK came out first). Thankfully, there's more to Jennifer Kent's feature debut than the inevitable comparisons to Ari Aster's own “I am your motherrrrrr” flick - and we'll get into all of that in this Real Talk segment! Also, once again: don't forget to join us during this year's Livestream for the Cure, 5/17 at 4pm CT!TIMELINE00:01:26 I am your mother!00:02:08 Real Talk00:46:12 The Future & Patreon Stuff- Interested in more Contrarians goodness? This week the duo discusses a movie that Josh… well, doesn't like; Jennifer Kent's The Babadook (2014). From wiki: “The Babadook is a 2014 Australian psychological horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent in her feature directorial debut, based on her 2005 short film Monster. Starring Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear, the film follows a widowed single mother who with her son must confront a mysterious humanoid monster in their home.”Also discussed: correction corner for The White Reindeer, Race with the Devil, the rerelease of The Big Heat with Drusilla's artwork, Murder My Sweet,  Bertolt Brecht and communist screenwriters, “elevated horror” and more.  NEXT WEEK: The Silence of the Lambs (1991) Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://twitter.com/BloodhausPodhttps://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/ Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/ Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://bsky.app/profile/joshuaconkel.bsky.socialhttps://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/
