6 months ago my Dad sent me an email with the subject: How To Talk To Depressed Friends. At the time it was met with an eye roll and me thinking: This sounds fucking depressing. But instead it was really funny, touching and honest. In this episode we break down each point made in How To Talk To Depressed Friends and why it matters. As well as hear Bill's personal story of addiction, living with bipolar condition and how he got to where he is today. Bill has a unique way of telling a story, he says everything you have been feeling in such a matter of fact way. This style makes it easy to digest and even easier for those who really don't know how to talk to their depressed friends.

Bill Bernat joins the podcast this week and we chat about his past life struggling with depression and drug addication and how he coped with this and turned things around for the better. We also chat about his career at NASA, unfortunately he was not an astronaut.
After a lifelong struggle with mental illness, Bill Bernat used his background in stand-up comedy to return to the stage with a new mission: to share his mental health journey and make people laugh at the same time. Now Bill uses storytelling and public workshops to normalize mental illness and teach others how to relate to loved ones who may be struggling.

When I decide to invite somebody to appear on the Ignite Seattle podcast, it's often because of two things: 1. The speaker has a topic that makes me want to know more. My curiosity gets the better of me.2. The topic is something that I have something to say about myself. I get egotistical.Bill Bernat's talk, "De-Isolation: Overcoming Social Anxiety" from Ignite 29 fell into the second category. Me and Bill have both gone through periods of social anxiety, and I thought it'd be a great discussion for us both to share our insights. In the following podcast, we talk about how we came our social anxiety, what lead to us experiencing the issue, and whether introversion played a part. All comments can be emailed to me (Daniel) at podcast@igniteseattle.com
