In this compelling episode of "It's the Bottom Line That Matters," hosts Jennifer Glass and Patricia, alongside Daniel, delve into the critical issue of mental health among small business owners. The episode kicks off with an open acknowledgment of the struggles that many entrepreneurs face, including feelings of loneliness, heightened anxiety, and creeping depression, as they navigate the pressures of business ownership. Jennifer candidly shares her personal experience of being akin to the relentless bunny from battery commercials, tirelessly going until she inevitably hits a wall. This metaphor serves as a stark reminder of the importance of recognizing personal limits and the need to recharge. The discussion broaches the surface-level impact of depression, touching on how feelings of hopelessness and lethargy can significantly hinder decision-making and business operations. The dialogue transitions into practical strategies to address these mental health challenges, emphasizing the value of having a support system. Both Daniel and Patricia discuss the importance of speaking with a trusted confidant, be it a therapist, family member, or friend, to help process and alleviate overwhelming emotions. Daniel stresses the necessity of externalizing emotions rather than repressing them, as unresolved feelings can grow more potent if left unchecked. Additionally, the hosts explore the role of emerging technologies, such as mental health-oriented chatbots, which can provide a modern form of support and reflection. Throughout the episode, the emphasis on proactive communication and self-awareness is clear, offering listeners actionable insights into managing mental health in the entrepreneurial context. This episode not only highlights the pervasive issues of mental well-being within the business community but also serves as a call to action for ongoing conversation and support, inviting listeners to engage further by reaching out with questions and discussion topics for future episodes. The median age of onset for mental disorders is 14 years. This means, 50% of individuals who will develop mental illness will have already developed the disorder by the age of 14 years.Since children's diagnoses are missed, they do not receive the care that they need and are less likely to receive help, which has a flow-on effect to adolescence where more complicated conditions can present. In this episode, Professor Jennie Hudson from Black Dog Institute shares her findings on understanding the onset of anxiety and depression in children and teenagers, focusing on correcting the myth that mental health problems begin in adolescence.Joining her on the panel, is Psychiatrist Dr Brenda Heyworth who shares her insights from working with children and teenagers, and by Fiona, a lived experience representative who also discusses the topic from her perspective.Panel Members: -- Professor Jennie Hudson - Director of Research at Black Dog Institute- Dr Brenda Heyworth - Psychiatrist, Educator and Facilitator- Fiona - Lived Experience RepresentativeFacilitator: - - Dr Sarah Barker - Clinical Psychologist

The links to diet, life style, gut biomes and what we can do about it. Welcome, folks. Good Wednesday morning. It is Wednesday, September the 11th, 2024. For this is episode 3, 556 of the survival podcast. We're bringing back on one of my favorite people to interview Dr. Steven Lewis of green wisdom health. I don't think he's been with us since about 2019. If I remember right somewhere in that range, and it's good to have him back on today. We're going to be talking about stress, anxiety, and depression and how, no, it's. Not all in your head. There's a variety of environmental and nutritional stressors that are actually causing stress. when you have stress, then maybe you have anxiety. And then maybe when you're stressed out and have anxiety. Maybe you get depressed, so you might feel it in your head some, but there are things that you can do to alleviate this and, Dr. Lewis will be with us in just a minute. Next up today, you know, we're going to talk about stress and one of those things that stresses people out is money and having your money constantly erode. That'll stress you out. Well, you know, I don't ever recommend going in all in on anything, but I'll tell you, I've been recommending alternative investments for as long as I've done this show. Anyway, with that, let's bring Dr lewis back on to the survival podcast. Steven, man, welcome to the show. Hey, it's good to be back. Can you just start out with, instead of our subject today, kind of your origin story. Before you decided to go to chiropractic school and then kind of go down this whole world of nutrition with those studies, what was your life like before that? What led you in that direction to choose this as a profession? Well, my parents always took us to the chiropractor first and then an osteopath or MB. Later, if the chiropractor suggested it, I always thought there should be a very symbiotic relationship between them. And that's mostly true now, but, a chiropractor talked me into being a chiropractor and it's been a really good road, because I couldn't handle the blood and guts. I admired the medical profession, but I've seen so many people get well. by taking supplements. And I know the FDA says, it can't help a symptom or cure a disease, but still your body has to have the basics just to work with and our food doesn't have it. And that's why I kind of really admire what you're doing. You're teaching people to grow more nutritious food. And you tell them it's not the soil, it's the microorganism that's, fixing the nitrogen, for example. we're going to talk about microorganisms today and how important that is in your brain health, stress, anxiety, depression, your musculoskeletal health. early on in my chiropractic career, I was really busy. And I noticed that when I put people on nutrients to stop the musculoskeletal inflammation, Then say well God I see better. I'm not as stressed or my husband's nicer to me Which meant I'm not as irritable it all works together structure function nerve supply nutrition and choosing a happy attitude. I think right now people are experiencing more anxiety more depression. but they're also dealing with kind of, as you alluded to, like, and probably part of this is like gut inflammation and you're a chiropractor. So I would imagine muscular skeletal issues or something you'd be looking at. how are all these challenges interconnected? Cause I think people tend to like make these compartmentalized, like anxiety and depressions over here. And that's exactly what pharmaceutical companies want. Cause then they can tell you, right. Take this drug that's on the TV where the mentally, mentally, depressed person is dancing through a field. And then when your hands twitch, take this other drug to go with that first drug.

The key takeaway is that it's natural for life to be uncertain, and accepting this fact can alleviate the need for control, leading to a lighter mental state. Both anxiety and depression have become more prevalent due to the heightened uncertainty, with many experiencing these feelings, making it important to understand the differences between the two. Anxiety is characterized by apprehension about the future, worried thoughts, and a desire to avoid triggering situations. On the other hand, depression manifests as sadness, hopelessness, and lack of belief in positive outcomes. It's crucial to recognize these thinking symptoms in ourselves and those around us. Physical symptoms differ between anxiety and depression, with anxiety often presenting as the fight or flight response, while depression may lead to severe lack of energy, appetite changes, and sleep disturbances. Moreover, there can be a crossover of symptoms between anxiety and depression, which can exacerbate each other if left unchecked. Seeking help and support if experiencing heightened anxiety or depression is crucial, as both conditions are treatable with the right approach and commitment to improving mental health. It's essential not to feel shame or embarrassment in asking for help and to understand that the path to overcoming these challenges may have ups and downs, requiring patience and self-compassion. Together, we can navigate these difficult emotions and work towards a healthier mental state. Remember, depression lies; it tells you that you've always felt this way and always will, but that's not the truth. Stay strong, be patient with yourself, and know that with effort and time, improvement is possible. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
