What if diagnosing PTSD, anxiety, and depression could be as objective as a blood test — done in 10 minutes on your phone? That's the vision behind Sensei, a company using AI and ocular biometrics to bring measurable, objective diagnostics to mental health. In this episode, host Deborah Westphal sits down with David Zakariaie, founder and CEO of Sensei, to talk about the science of the eye, a $2M technology problem solved with a commercial camera, and why fixing mental health starts with fixing measurement.Key TakeawaysMental health's biggest crisis isn't just a shortage of care — it's a measurement problem. Major depression, the most commonly diagnosed mental health condition in the U.S., is misdiagnosed approximately 65% of the time. PTSD, bipolar, and schizophrenia are misdiagnosed between 84–92% of the time.Sensei's diagnostic app shows patients a series of ocular stimuli for roughly 10.5 minutes, captures their eyes' responses via a standard smartphone camera, and outputs a binary diagnosis plus a severity score. The platform measures approximately 45 individual metrics across three categories: traditional ocular metrics (pupil size, blinks, saccades, gaze), iris dilator and sphincter dynamics (mapping sympathetic vs. parasympathetic nervous system activity), and heart rate and heart rate variability from facial video.Sensei is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials for a PTSD diagnostic, with an FDA submission planned for late 2025 and approval expected in 2027.About 16,000 people participated in pre-trial studies; the full dataset at submission is expected to reach approximately 30,000.The go-to-market strategy focuses on telehealth platform integration — partnering with companies like Spring Health, Talkspace, and BetterHelp to embed the diagnostic tool directly into existing care delivery workflows.Future expansion targets schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and ADHD, with longer-term interest in neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's and dementia.About David ZachariaDavid Zakariaie is the founder and CEO of Sensei, a mental health diagnostics company building the first FDA-regulatory-grade platform for diagnosing and monitoring PTSD, anxiety, and depression using AI-powered ocular biometrics. His path began at 15, when he attended Google I/O, received an early pair of Google Glass, and became fascinated with the scientific potential of the human eye. He left high school after 10th grade, taught himself to code, and launched the company in 2015.Resources & Links MentionedSensei: sensei.health (verify current URL)Mental Health Study (Phase 3 Trial Sign-Up): mentalhealthstudy.orgKaren Toffler Charitable Trust: tofflertrust.org (verify current URL)Parea Therapeutics (digital therapeutics reference)The CAPS-5 (Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale)The PCL-5 (PTSD Checklist for DSM-5)If You Enjoyed This EpisodeSubscribe to Research Renaissance wherever you listen to podcasts. What's the perfect alibi? Being at the doctor's office while your dogs do the dirty work. Mike White and Chris Stachiw sink their teeth into Season Seven's "How to Dial a Murder," a 1978 episode that features one of the most ingeniously gruesome murder methods in the entire Columbo canon. Nicol Williamson commands the screen as Dr. Eric Mason, a behavioral psychologist with iron self-control, a house full of movie memorabilia, and two very well-trained Dobermans named Laurel and Hardy. When he discovers that his late wife had been having an affair with his best friend Dr. Charles Hunter (Joel Fabiani), Mason devises a kill that's equal parts Pavlov and Orson Welles: dial home, ask a question about Citizen Kane, and let the dogs handle the rest. There's also the small matter of Columbo's complicated feelings about the dogs — and whether they deserve what the legal system has in store for them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth
Todd Solondz's disowned debut finally gets its day in court. Fear, Anxiety & Depression (1989) follows Ira Ellis, a bespectacled, self-deluding playwright adrift in the last gasp of the East Village art scene — too busy pining after a performance artist named Junk to notice the woman who actually loves him.Mike Sullivan and David Rodgers join Mike to dig into the film Solondz famously begged a friend not to rent, examining what makes it both a fascinating time capsule of downtown New York bohemia and an unmistakable preview of the tragicomic sensibility that would eventually produce Happiness and Welcome to the Dollhouse. They also make the case for why this orphaned debut — unavailable on any legitimate platform since its 1990 VHS release — deserves a proper restoration and re-release.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

In this episode, I reflect on my time leading a cottage at a group home and how stepping into a leadership role challenged my identity, anxiety, and desire to just be the “fun guy.” I unpack the psychological shift from being liked to being responsible, and how consistent structure reduced chaos, stress, and mental overload — ultimately allowing me to lead with both authority and warmth. Why I initially hated being in charge despite caring deeply about the kids and staffThe internal conflict between being the fun, relational leader vs. enforcing rules and boundariesHow anxiety, rumination, and self-doubt intensify in leadership rolesThe realization that structure (being “the law”) creates the conditions for fun and connectionHow consistency and staff alignment helped the environment run itself over timeWhy silence, avoidance, and unclear expectations increase stress for everyoneA key reframe: you may not hate leadership — you may hate unstructured chaosPractical takeaway: clarity, consistency, and support reduce mental load and make leadership sustainableThrive With Leo Coaching: If you want to reduce your psychological pain, regain your purpose and forge your own path, go to www.thrivewithleo.com to begin your journey. If you or anyone you know is considering suicide or self-harm, or is anxious, depressed, upset, or needs to talk, there are people who want to help:In the US: Crisis Text Line: Text CRISIS to 741741 for free, confidential crisis counseling. In this powerful episode of Acta Non Verba, Marcus sits down with John Howell, Super Bowl champion and North Creek Ranch innovator. John shares his incredible journey from small-town Nebraska eight-man football to the NFL, revealing the struggles, setbacks, and mental health challenges that shaped him into the man and leader he is today. From walking onto Colorado State as an unknown to winning a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, John's story is a masterclass in perseverance, faith, and the power of doing hard things. Now, John is building something even more impactful at North Creek Ranch—a six-generation family cattle ranch transformed into a retreat destination where men can reconnect with themselves, nature, and each other through hunting, leadership training, and authentic fellowship. Episode Highlights [22:48] The Freshman Who Almost Quit - John reveals how he nearly gave up during his freshman year at Colorado State, flunking every class except aerobics and planning to quit football entirely. A Christmas break drive past his high school reminded him of his dreams and the people who believed in him, leading to a pivotal decision to return with renewed determination. [22:49] The Practice That Changed Everything - After arriving at Colorado State as a walk-on, John thought the team wasn't very good—until the fourth practice when the entire varsity squad showed up. This humbling moment taught him the difference between going 100% and understanding practice etiquette, eventually leading to mentorship from All-American Anthony Cesario. [56:17] The Anxiety Attack Before Super Bowl Season - John courageously shares his breakdown the night before training camp in his second NFL season—calling Coach Jon Gruden to say he had to leave. Instead of cutting him, Gruden responded with love and support, saying "I don't know what you have going on, but I want you to know I love you and I'm here for you." John went on to win the Super Bowl that season. [46:38] The Power of Not Quitting When It's Hardest - John's advice to young athletes and men: "Do not quit your freshman year." He explains the difference between stopping something and quitting something, emphasizing that we can live with failure, but regret from quitting when things are hardest will haunt us forever. John Howell is a Super Bowl XXXVII champion who played defensive back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under legendary coaches Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden. After an improbable journey from eight-man high school football in rural Nebraska to walking on at Colorado State University and eventually being drafted in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, John spent five seasons in professional football. Today, John is the visionary behind North Creek Ranch, a six-generation family cattle ranch in Nebraska that he's transformed into a world-class retreat destination and hunting lodge. Through North Creek Ranch and his nonprofit Herd Bull University, John creates transformative experiences for men, teaching them to embrace challenge, build confidence, and live with purpose through hunting, outdoor skills, and leadership development. John is a man of deep faith, a devoted husband and father, and a passionate advocate for mental health awareness in athletics and business leadership. Mental health is not a side issue. It shapes how we live, love, and show up in our faith. In this episode, Pastor and author Steve Larson joins me for an honest conversation about anxiety, depression, and what it really looks like to care for our mental health through a faith lens. One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation with Emma is that anxiety, depression, and burnout aren't character flaws—they're nervous system responses to feeling unsafe. We talked about how depression often mirrors the nervous system's shutdown response, and how anxiety shows up as fight-or-flight. When your body feels overwhelmed for too long, it doesn't motivate you—it protects you. Why Worry Keeps You Stuck Emma explained that worry is actually reinforced behavior. When we worry and nothing bad happens, our brain learns, "That worked—do it again." Over time, worry becomes automatic. This is why telling yourself to "just stop worrying" never works. One Tool That Can Reduce Anxiety by Up to 80% One of the most practical tools we discussed is Scheduled Worry: Instead of worrying all day, you train your brain to worry at a specific time—usually 10–15 minutes in the afternoon. Outside of that window, you gently remind yourself, "I'll deal with this at 5pm." This retrains the brain instead of fighting it. Burnout and Fear-Based Fuel Emma shared how she burned out after years of pushing herself—weekly YouTube videos, pregnancy, parenting, and running a business. What stood out most was this idea: Fear is a dirty fuel source. When we're driven by fear—of failure, not being enough, or letting others down—we eventually crash. Healing often means switching fuel sources to trust, values, and self-permission to slow down. ✅ Action Steps for Listeners Set a daily check-in alarm (once an hour) to notice: What am I thinking? What am I feeling? What's happening in my body? Practice willingness instead of avoidance Let the feeling exist without trying to fix it. Try Scheduled Worry for 7 days 10–15 minutes/day, written out. Clarify your locus of control Separate what you can control from what you can't. Choose one value-aligned action Small, doable, and grounded—not fear-driven.

Episode #301 Mariah Prussia, Winning Childhood Anxiety And DepressionHello Health Heroes! In this powerful Episode 301 of Tim James Upgraded, I sit down with a true modern-day warrior—on and off the mat—Mariah Prussia.Mariah grew up on a farm, competed in three college sports, and earned her Exercise Science degree before spending years coaching and training others. Then at age 36, when most MMA fighters were thinking about retirement, she did the opposite—she stepped into the cage and became a mixed martial arts fighter. That mindset alone tells you what kind of human we're dealing with. But Mariah's story doesn't stop in the octagon. Today she's come full circle—back on her own regenerative farm, rebuilding soil, growing real food, and living in alignment with nature. She's also an adjunct professor, personal trainer, motivational speaker, and the founder of a non-profit that teaches kids how to grow food, forage, make their own tinctures, and become stewards of the land. What blew me away is that she's helping turn this hands-on, nature-based program into a national curriculum for 6th–8th graders—giving kids practical tools to lose weight, reduce anxiety and depression, and reconnect with real life instead of screens. In this episode we dig into:How farm life and sports shaped her grit and resilienceWhy she chose MMA at 36—and what it taught her about fear, discipline, and self-worthHow regenerative farming and real food can transform families and communitiesWhy getting kids outside, in the dirt, growing and making things, is one of the most powerful “mental health interventions” we haveIf you care about your health, your kids, or the future of real food in America, this is an episode you'll want to listen to—and share.Enjoy the show!Love & Light,Coach TimP.S. On this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, host Avik Chakraborty sits down with Ali Yilmaz, co founder and CEO of AITherapy.care, to unpack how an AI powered CBT coach is closing the access gap in mental health care. From long waitlists and high session fees to the confusion around what therapy actually is, Ali breaks down why the current system leaves so many people behind. He shares how his own anxiety, isolation and burnout as a young product manager in the United States pushed him to build the tool he could not find. This conversation goes deep into cognitive behavioral therapy, AI, negative thought patterns, self doubt, anxiety, depression and emotional resilience, framed in a way that is practical for busy professionals, students and high achievers. If you have ever felt like therapy is too expensive, too slow or too confusing to start, this episode gives you a clear, grounded look at how structured self help and AI can work alongside traditional therapy to support your mental health journey and not replace human clinicians. About the Guest Ali Yilmaz: Ali Yilmaz is the co founder and CEO of AITherapy.care, an AI powered CBT support platform helping thousands of users challenge negative thoughts, manage anxiety and build emotional resilience in a private, affordable and on demand way. Originally an engineer and product manager who moved to the United States at 23, Ali struggled with loneliness, self doubt and anxiety in a high pressure tech environment. Traditional therapy felt expensive, slow and hard to access. Leaning on his background in AI and his curiosity about cognitive behavioral therapy, he built an experimental chatbot for himself that evolved into a global tool. Today, Ali and his team are focused on responsible mental health technology, transparent use of CBT frameworks and giving people an accessible first step into mental health support. Key Takeaways: Access gaps are real Ali experienced long waitlists, high costs and scheduling friction when he first tried to find therapy. That frustration made it clear that many people who need help simply cannot access it in time. CBT works because it is structured Cognitive behavioral therapy offers clear frameworks to spot negative thinking patterns, question them and reframe them. Ali highlights simple but powerful tools like asking. “Do I have proof this thought is true.” Most anxiety is story driven, not fact driven His anxiety was not about being bad at his job. It was about self created narratives and catastrophizing. Once he started testing his thoughts against evidence, his feelings and behavior shifted. AI plus CBT can scale support, not replace therapists AITherapy.care uses static CBT structures inside an AI system to guide users through exercises. It is positioned as a self help and skills building tool that can complement therapy, not a substitute for clinical care. The best products start from real pain Ali did not start with a pitch deck. He started as a young immigrant trying to breathe again. The strong early pull from users showed that many others needed the same bridge into mental health support. In this Habits and Hustle podcast episode, I dive deep into this pressing issue with renowned psychologist and author Dr. Leonard Sax.
