Brennan & Jess reveiw the feature film debut for short-film director Bishal Dutta, It Lives Inside
Demons have always been a staple in religious horror movies. Christianity and Judaism has been a great area to cultivate stories for entertainment purposes when it comes to scares. One faith, Hinduism, has their share of demonic entities and evil beings that try to corrupt or cause chaos to humanity. The recently released film, IT LIVES INSIDE (2023), takes this to Western audiences that may not be as familiar with the religious texts that discuss these monsters.Samidha, nicknamed Sam, is a popular high school student who comes from an immigrant family from India. Her mother and she butt heads often over cultural issues and her wish to be the person she wants to be. When an old friend Tamira disappears after Sam and she have a fight, an ancient evil may have been unleashed that will terrorize Sam and those around her.IT LIVES INSIDE is written and directed by Bishal Dutta and stars Megan Suri as Sam, Neeru Bajwa as Sam's mother, among a large supporting cast. The film has received mixed reviews by both critics and audiences alike. The film received a strong trailer push though didn't catch on as distributor Neon had hoped. Your co-hosts take a look at this film and give their thoughts.
This week on End Credits we get spooky. Halloween is around the corner, and by "around the corner" we mean in the next several weeks. True, there's still a whole month to go before the day, but we begin this episode by visiting a streaming channel that's spooky 365 days a year. And then, in the review, we get spookier still with one of the latest horror movie releases. This Wednesday, September 27, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Three From Shudder. It's our first show for October, which as you all know is Halloween Month. (Yes, it's a month now.) Did you know that there's a whole streaming channel dedicated to the horror genre? There is, and it's called Shudder. On this channel there's literally a world of horror from movies that count as classics to new stuff that might be the classics of the future. This week, we're each going to pick three movies from Shudder you should check out before the 31st. REVIEW: It Lives Inside (2023). How does that song go? "Every single one of us has a devil inside." It turns out that that there's some truth in that in Hindu mythology, which is the the basis for the new horror movie, It Lives Inside. Sam is just a high school-aged daughter of Indian immigrants trying to fit in, but her former-BFF Tamira has issues and they all come down to what she has inside some cloudy looking mason jar. In his first film, Bishal Dutta taps into a lot of anxieties around clashing cultures and immigration, but does that translate into a scary movie? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Bibs and Tyler are back with yet another horror movie review. This one is from a director with 1 degree of separation from Tyler, which is how it ended up on my radar. It Lives Inside has a somewhat traditional horror/thriller setup but with some Indian-American cultural details that make it feel more fresh than a run-of-the-mill horror film. Great performances by the cast also elevate this film. Did Tyler and Bibs think this one was worth your time? Tap in to find out. Non-spoiler section: First 16:34 Starring: Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever), Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan Additional Cast: Betty Gabriel (Get Out), Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh Directed by: Bishal Dutta Written by: Bishal Dutta, Story by Ashish Mehta Quick synopsis: An Indian-American teenager struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friend and, in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness. Star Megan Suri (Netflix's Never Have I Ever) and writer/director Bishal Dutta join host Aaron Sagers to discuss It Lives Inside, the new horror movie opening September 22, 2023, which brings an ancient South Asian demon to the Los Angeles suburbs. A teen-focused film, It Lives Inside tells the story of Samidha — or "Sam" — a high school student in L.A. desperate to fit in. She rejects her Indian culture (and her Indian mother's old ways) in an effort to be like everyone else. But when a mythological demonic spirit called a Pischach latches onto her former best friend, she must come to terms with her heritage in order to defeat it. From the producers of Get Out, and distributed by Neon, the film is written by Bishal Dutta and Ashish Mehta. After generating buzz at SXSW last March 2023, the film finally arrives in theaters September 22, 2023. The movie evokes modern supernatural horror like The Conjuring as well as suburban teen horror flicks like A Nightmare on Elm Street, but does so by introducing Western audiences to South Asian Indian lore and demons. The film is the feature directorial debut by Dutta, who was born in India, grew up in California since the age of four, and was inspired by a scary story told to him by his grandfather. Aaron spoke with Dutta at San Diego Comic Con last July, and with star Megan Suri the week of Sept 18, leading up to the film's release. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales.
