Lindsay is an expert on all things related to the royal monarchy and teaches these two knuckleheads (mostly Ethan) a thing or two about what Princess Diana was going through when she lived with the royal family.

Academy Award®-nominated cinematographer Ed Lachman joins us to discuss his gorgeous cinematography on “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín. The seasoned director of photography shares his approach to blending formats — including 35mm, Super 8, and 16mm — to capture the operatic essence of Maria Callas's life, as well as his use of color psychology, lighting techniques, and period-specific film stocks to evoke emotion and authenticity."Opera and cinema are very similar… Opera's images are not representational either. Like cinema. And they create the subtext for the emotions of the story. And what helps to create the nonverbal form of communication is the same thing that happens in music of the opera. It's a heightened reality… I felt the film could be a representation if her life, mirrored in the operas that she sang in. And even though people say she was the sum of the tragedies of the opera she sang, I believe she had the resistance and strength to overcome." —Ed Lachman, Director of Photography, “Maria”Be sure to check out “Maria,” now streaming on Netflix, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com.

The third film in Pablo Larraín's trilogy of iconic women, following 2016's Jackie and 2021's Spencer, Maria shows us the final week of the life of opera singer Maria Callas, who at the age of 53 is experiencing delusions, hallucinations, and the fear that her once-perfect singing voice has abandoned her. Mike isn't familiar with Maria Callas; José is (despite worrying before we started recording that he wouldn't have much to say when expected to explain who she is). No familiarity with her is required, however, to enjoy the film. Larraín's elegant direction, Steven Knight's intelligent screenplay, and Angelina Jolie's extraordinary, subtle performance combine beautifully to explore Maria's ego, fears, and passion. Maria's delusions, in which choirs fill town squares, orchestras back her in her apartment, and a fascinated journalist follows her around Paris chronicling her memories, are evident throughout the film... everywhere but in song. She knows all too well that her voice is leaving her, she hopes for and needs its return, and ultimately, the film renders her struggle with it a fight to hold on to life itself. It's sympathetic, understandable, and beautiful. Maria is the best film of Larraín's impressive body of work, and features perhaps the best performance of Jolie's. See it. (We also discuss Robbie Williams, because Mike saw Better Man, the Robbie Williams monkey movie, and is desperate to talk about it.) Recorded on 21st January 2025.
Fernanda Torres, Walter Salles, Pablo Larraín e Angelina Jolie

This week on Screentime John Fardy talks to the one and only Angelina Jolie about playing Maria Callas in the new movie ‘Maria' which sees the famed Opera singer living out her final days as a fading star in Paris in the 1970's. John is also joined by the film's director Pablo Larraín. Chris Wasser has reviews of the week's other new cinema releases including 'Baby Girl'. Our guests this week were ‘A Real Pain'...just joking, Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin were actually really nice... They sit down with Simon to discuss the comedy-drama, directed, written, produced by and starring Eisenberg alongside Culkin. They play two mismatched cousins David and Benji on a tour of Poland, the ancestral home of their late-grandmother, where they hope to reconnect with their Jewish roots—and each other. With Benji lacking in a social filer (as, delightfully, is Kieran Culkin is in real life—just ask Simon!) their trip isn't as straightforward as the uptight David planned. Hear what Mark thought of the film, plus reviews of ‘Maria'—Pablo Larraín's biopic of legendary opera singer Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie), reflecting on her public and private life in its last days in 1970s Paris—and ‘Babygirl', the psychosexual thriller starring Nicole Kidman as a high-powered but privately dissatisfied CEO embroiled in an affair with Harris Dickinson's much younger intern at her firm. The first episode of the new year! On the thirty- fifth episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friends and ATFT regulars "unofficial co- host"/ Emmy- winning photojournalist Cole Echevarria, writer/ director Samy- El Kamel, and Samy's friend movie lover Adolfo Miranda to talk about 2024 in film! This episode is explicit and a few recent films are spoiled, especially Joker: Folie à Deux. 2023 set the bar pretty high in terms of years in film. While I believe 2024 was mostly a lackluster year in cinema, there were undisputed gems beloved by many. Most of us agreed the latter part of the year contained the best new releases compared to the beginning of the year, including films like A Real Pain, Anora, and The Substance. As previously stated, both Cole and Samy are ATFT regulars while this is Adolfo's first time on the show! More specifically, this episode marks Cole's 17th time and Samy's 10th time over the course of 81 ATFT episodes recorded thus far.!Cole, Samy, and I have reflected on past years in film for three years in a row now. Our "2022 in Film" episode is in the vault but check out Samy and I talking about "2023 in film" last year (Episode 11)! I always look forward to this yearly episode since it not only gives me an opportunity to chat with my friends but it is nice to know these episodes will act as a time capsule years from now. With each episode, the banter only gets funnier and funnier, even if it is at my expense. Cole and Samy will hopefully be back on ATFT soon for the upcoming Oscars special! Last month, Cole won an Emmy for his work with First Coast News on the news package “Waiting for Rebuild”!! Click the link to watch it!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDo6Cbvzyj4 Samy's long- anticipated short film “Waveform” will be released soon, under his production company Barefoot Python Media, but is expected to hit some film festivals so it may be a while before it is readily accessible online. Check out the teaser trailer for the short on the Barefoot Python Media YouTube channel by clicking this link!: https://www.youtube.com/@BarefootPythonMedia You can also find Samy discussing his updated top ten favorite films of 2024! Last year's “2023 in Film” episode was more of a year in review. That was the intention with this episode but unfortunately we ran out of time. This episode is most entirely the four of us sharing our top favorite films of the year. Cole and I each share our top five favorites of the year while both Samy and Adolfo each shared their top ten favorites. Even though we share a few similar favorites, our lists truly vary between each other. Cole's favorites of the year have changed slightly since last June's “Film Finds” episode. Adolfo, an A24 fan, listed several A24 productions in his top ten list and also made a comparison using Conclave that thrilled me. Samy chose his favorite films carefully and, as per usual, articulately describes each of his picks in a way that will entice you to watch them soon after listening to this episode. My list was not as concrete as everyone else's but I talked about the return of one of my favorite actresses, Angelina Jolie in Pablo Larraín's Maria, before sharing my favorite film of the year which was such a controversial choice that it launched a long analytical debate. Angelina Jolie joins the show to talk about playing the title role in Pablo Larraín's latest film, Maria. The film tells the tumultuous and beautiful story of the world's greatest female opera singer, Maria Callas, re-lived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris. Jolie explains how she got involved with the film, dives into the intense preparation process (which required her to learn how to sing opera so her voice could be properly blended with Callas), and walks us through how the costume design process helped her find the private version of Maria that existed behind closed doors. She also shares her unique connection with the extras who played the audience during her La Scala opera scene, describes her relationship with co-stars Pierfrancesco Favino and Alba Rohrwacher (who play Maria's butler, Ferruccio and her housemaid, Bruna), and breaks down a few of the film's most challenging scenes. Listen to more from Netflix Podcasts.

“Maria,” the latest film from director Pablo Larraín, offers a mind-bending exploration of the life and final days of legendary opera singer Maria Callas, with Angelina Jolie delivering a transformative performance. To bring her world to life, the acclaimed sound team faced the unique challenge of blending iconic original recordings of Callas with actual, live performances from Jolie, who trained extensively to sing opera at a professional level.“We absolutely went into this with the idea that Angelina was gonna do this live… She called it ‘face singing,' because it's so unnatural. It's not a pop song in your shower or in your car where you kind of just go along with it. It's constantly changing tempos and dynamics; that's super hard to reproduce. I mean, what she did was incredible to even begin to approach this.”—Mac Ruth, Production Sound Mixer, “Maria”From live on-set vocal performances to intricate post-production layering, the team reveals their cutting-edge techniques for weaving together these extraordinary performances into a seamless auditory experience.Joining today's discussion are: - Lars Ginzel – Re-Recording Mixer - Mac Ruth – Production Sound Mixer - Gwennolé Le Borgne – Sound Designer - John Warhurst – Supervising Sound EditorBe sure to check out Maria, now playing in select theaters and streaming on Netflix in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos® starting December 11th.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. It's our 500th episode! And this brief, mid-week pop-in is a great example of the wide range of films we like to cover here at Breakfast All Day. First, we review "Moana 2," the sequel to the 2016 Disney Animation hit. Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson return for more ocean adventures and more monstrous foes. It's gorgeous, but the songs aren't nearly as good as they were in the original "Moana" without Lin-Manuel Miranda's touch. In theaters. Then we discuss "Maria," starring Angelina Jolie as legendary opera singer Maria Callas. Chilean director Pablo Larraín once again imagines what the inner life of this cultural icon might have been like, as he did with "Jackie" and "Spencer." This is also a gorgeous film, and Jolie is tremendous in it. In theaters now in limited release, streaming on Netflix starting Dec. 11. During this week of gratitude, we're especially thankful to you for being with us here, whether this is your 500th episode or your first. Thank you for sharing your time and your support. Let's keep it going! Have a great Thanksgiving, and we'll see you back here on Friday. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/
