Bibs and Tyler are back with yet another horror movie review. This one is from a director with 1 degree of separation from Tyler, which is how it ended up on my radar. It Lives Inside has a somewhat traditional horror/thriller setup but with some Indian-American cultural details that make it feel more fresh than a run-of-the-mill horror film. Great performances by the cast also elevate this film. Did Tyler and Bibs think this one was worth your time? Tap in to find out. Back again with Tyler Lennon and surprise, surprise it's a horror review. When I first heard about The Blackening I just assumed it was another ensemble parody horror movie and I was not paying much attention to it. Then I noticed a few people I liked in the cast, realized who the writer was, and had a little bit of a push to add it to my list. I'm glad I did because this is one of my favorite movies of 2023. I laughed to the point of tears multiple times and enjoyed the ride from start to finish. I hope this catches on in theaters but if not, I'm sure it will become very popular once it hits streaming services. When the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was released, no one knew what to expect. We didn't know the characters, James Gunn wasn't a household name by any stretch of the imagination and Marvel hadn't really gone cosmic yet. We'd already grown to love and trust the brand but this was something new, something risky. Fast forward 9 years and the Guardians name carries weight, so much weight that people are wondering if this movie will get Marvel back on track. James Gunn is widely respected, so much so that Marvel's competitor hired him to run their whole deal. This after Marvel fired him, allowed him to work on a pair of D.C. properties, then hired him back after realizing they had been too quick to act. It has been quite the journey with a lot of laughter but also a few tears along the way. Would Guardians 3 deliver the same? I'm joined in this discussion by Jose Mata. Someone I talk to often but is a first-time guest on the show. I hope you enjoy the convo. The dramatic retelling of the classic sitcom returned for its second season, but did it live up to the great first season? Reese returns to the show to talk about Season 2 of Peacock's Bel Air. This season gave us love triangles, great intra-family tension, professional life drama, drugs, violence, new threats, and new successes. There was drama around every corner and Reese and I go over all of the major plot points in the series by lead character. Enjoy the conversation. This week I'm back with another Indie Movie Review. I set out to do at least one a month but I have not released any since Free Skate back in January so you'll get a few in the coming weeks until I catch up. Today's entry is R.M.N. A Romanian film that has been making waves since debuting at Cannes last year. Though the film is set in Romania, the main theme of the film applies to any Western country. While you are tracking the main plot, you'll also want to pay attention to the subplots as everything comes together in dramatic fashion at the conclusion of the film. I touch on the details of the film in this review but do not feel I spoiled anything until the very end and there is a substantial spoiler warning before I get into those details. Main Review: 00:12 - 21:25 Spoiler Section: 23:55 - End Starring: Marin Grigore (Legacy), Judith State (Sieranevada which was a Palme d'Or nominee in 2016), and (Monsters) Directed by: Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days), which was critically acclaimed. 60 nominations and 43 wins. For months I planned to see Beau is Afraid on opening weekend, then the week arrived and the runtime was too much for me to endure. We'll reconsider when it's on streaming platforms. Tyler was expecting to come along for the ride on that one so instead we pivoted to Evil Dead Rise. I had almost no familiarity with the previous entries in the franchise but thankfully Tyler did. The movie (at the time of this upload) is receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike. The Rotten Tomatoes scores from critics and audiences are each over 80% Fresh, so how did these two horror fans feel about the movie? Tap in to find out. First 31 minutes, Spoiler Free The spoiler section starts at 33:50 Starring: Lily Sullivan, Noah Paul (Power Rangers Dino Fury), Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist, Vikings, The Devil Wears Prada), Gabrielle Echolls, Morgan Davies, Nell Fisher Additional Cast: Mirabai Pease, Richard Crouchley, Anna-Maree Thomas Directed by: Lee Cronin (see below) Written by: Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) Quick synopsis A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable. A wave of content is arriving on your feeds this week as I have more time for movies during the NBA offseason. Today, I bring you an interview with 14-year-old rising star Tatum Matthews where we discuss her background and her upcoming role in the film The Artifice Girl (arriving in theaters and VOD on April 27). Tatum is an impressive young actress who is certainly going places and after listening to this interview you'll be able to say you were there from the beginning one day. Welcome to the first entry in what I hope will be a long-running and fun series on this podcast. It is the IMDB Top 100 series and today's entry is none other than Good Will Hunting. Coming in at #84 on the list, Good Will Hunting is a movie that is often quoted and mentioned in movie conversations but until recently I had never seen it. Thankfully, my guy Rolo from 77 Spaces on Twitter is a massive fan of the film and he came on to talk to me about it. These are likely to be more enjoyable if you've seen the movie yourself so if you haven't, cross it off your list and enjoy the conversation. Starring: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgard Additional Cast: Casey Affleck, Cole Hauser, Minnie Driver Directed by: Gus Van Sant Written by: Matt Damon, Ben AffleckQuick synopsis: Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life. I've been away for a few weeks but I'm dropping back into your feed with a review of the new Amazon movie Air! I brought along Shad Miller for this one because I am not a sneakerhead and I needed that perspective. Air is a movie that I had no expectations for and was pleasantly surprised by. Great acting, great storytelling, some history, and most surprisingly some emotion. This movie covered it all. This is definitely one that is pretty easy to recommend. Enjoy! Starring: Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Viola Davis Additional Cast: Chris Messina (Birds of Prey, The Mindy Project), Chris Tucker, Marlon Wayans Directed by: Ben Affleck Written by: Alex Convery Quick synopsis: Follows the history of shoe salesman Sonny Vaccaro, and how he led Nike in its pursuit of the greatest athlete in the history of basketball, Michael Jordan. The first episode of the previous season of this podcast covered the Scream requel and today I had to bring my guy Tyler back to cover Scream VI. There were big changes to the franchise and big swings taken with this movie so there were questions as to whether or not the magic would remain. Tyler and I talked for about 3 hours but I condensed the conversation into the important beats and split it between a non-spoiler section and a spoiler section. Non-Spoiler Review (~24 minutes) Spoiler Review Enjoy! Starring: Courtney Cox, Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Skeet Ulrich, Hayden Panettiere Additional Cast: Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding), Jack Champion (Spider, in Avatar), Josh Segarra (Arrow, Sirens, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Liana Liberato (If I Stay, Trust), Devyn Nekoda (Sneakerella, Utopia Falls), Tony Revolori (Dope, Flash Thompson in Spider-Man: No Way Home), Samara Weaving (Ready or Not, Nine Perfect Strangers) Directed by: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (previous Scream, Ready or Not) Written by: James Vanderbilt (previous Scream, Murder Mystery, Zodiac), and Guy Busick (previous Scream, Ready or Not). While recording the Scream VI review, Tyler and I got sidetracked talking about Black Mirror for a while. We talked about the show for almost 25 minutes and rather than waste that content, I put it into its own episode. It has been some time since I've been able to pull off my annual movie awards but I'm glad to be back. I'm also delighted that I got some of my guests from the past year to join me for this ride. We all have our feelings about the major awards shows so I want to make sure I take the time to talk about the movies that I loved whether the old guard appreciated them or not. There are 11 categories for my awards, some are traditional, while others I made up to ensure a wider swath of candidates was represented. 2022 was a good year for film. There is great representation from indie films to blockbusters and 2023 is already off to a strong start. I hope you enjoy what you hear! It's a panel discussion for the Creed III review with Bibs welcoming back Reese and Shad to discuss the latest entry in the Rocky franchise. The film brings together two rising movie stars in Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors for the main event but they were not the only two who stood out in this film. One of the most anticipated films for me in a while was Cocaine Bear. It's not part of a universe, not featuring any actors I love, and isn't about a story that I necessarily cared about but it looked like it was going to be a ton of fun. Reese and I were both anticipating this film so I had to bring him along for the review. If you know me, you know I try to avoid expectations because they can impact how you receive a film. Did having expectations backfire on me here? Listen to find out. The MCU has kicked off phase 5 with Ant-Man and Kang. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes have been mixed (bad critic reviews, great fan reviews) but it was time for me to sit down with two of my favorite collaborators to see how they felt about this one. I've said in the past that now that Cap is gone, Ant-Man is my guy so I needed this movie to come through for me. I was also on the Jonathan Majors train since The Last Black Man in San Francisco so I was excited to see him again after his MCU debut on Loki. The one thing I was concerned about coming into this film was the recasting of Cassie so we kick the podcast off with that particular topic. Enjoy! Starring: Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Jonathan Majors Additional Cast: Kathyrn Newton as Cassie Lang (Freaky), Bill Murray as Lord Krylar, Katy M. (This episode was on the old Have you Scene feed and has been moved over) In this episode of the Have You Scene? podcast I did something a little different again. I started with my spoiler-free review which I did solo. I brought in Shad (of the Uncool Urban and Shad vs. Smilez) for the spoiler section and then added a bonus clip of myself and my sister Shenelle at the very end. We get into a lot of different things in the spoiler section and end up talking about all things MCU at different points. We talked bout the Young Avengers for about 10-15 minutes but I cut that conversation out because it made the episode too long. Maybe you'll get that when it becomes relevant. 00:00 - 11:20 Spoiler free review 11:55 - 01:14:35 Spoiler review with Shad Miller 01:16:08 - End. Bonus clip with my sister. Shad and I break the movie down in a spoiler-free review in the first 20 or so minutes, then get into spoilers in the second half. M. Night Shyamalan is back with another movie and fittingly I am back with another review alongside my Mavs Outsiders co-host Reese Williams. Today I'm back with my indie movie of the month. Covering independent films has been good to me and I want to make sure I am reviewing at least one indie film per month on the podcast. Free Skate is a movie about a young woman who flees Russia to escape the inhumane treatment she received as a member of the figure skating program. The movie is written by former gymnast Veera Vilo and draws from some of her personal experiences and the experiences of her peers and colleagues. Consider this another entry in the #MeToo movement's wave of women's survival stories. Though the movie is set in Finland and Russia, the primary language spoken is English. I'm dropping back into your feed today for a review of Tom Hanks' A Man Called Otto. This was a movie I initially didn't plan to see but due to decent word of mouth, great reviews, and nothing else enticing me to be in theaters at the time, I gave it a chance. I'm glad I did. Episodes two weeks in a row? Who is this guy? That's right I'm back this week with another review and this time it is the creepy horror doll M3GAN. A lot of movie details come up so I would recommend watching the movie before listening to the review. Otherwise, enjoy! A new year means I'm changing something about the movie podcast but I'm hoping this is the last major change. The BibsCorner Podcast is now "Have You Scene?" since I'm only doing movie reviews here anyway. I spent time putting that name and logo together so I might as well use it, right? With that said, The Whale is a movie that is getting plenty of awards buzz and I finally got the opportunity to see it. Add to it the fact that one of my IRL friends wanted to do a podcast about it, I had to find a way to see it. The discussion went longer than anticipated but I hope you enjoy it! In episode 25 of the 3rd season of the Bibs Corner Podcast, I brought Reese back to talk about the Christmas action, thriller Violent Night. In this episode, I talk about three very different movies that you may want to take a look at this weekend in what is the first in a series of "What to Watch" episodes. I was fortunate to receive a screener for Lee Jung Jae's (Squid Game) directorial debut, Hunt, so I give a quick review for that movie before getting to two other films of interest that became available this weekend. As I mentioned above, I do plan to make this a quick weekly segment so be on the lookout for these going forward. If I've gotten a screener for any films releasing that week I'll do a review but otherwise, I'll just give the details of the movie and where you can watch it. Enjoy! I'm dropping back into your feed with a big one. This time it is an in-depth discussion about the latest Marvel entry, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This was a heavily anticipated film for many reasons and personally, I'm glad to put it behind me. There were several questions that needed to be answered in this film. Would the movie properly honor Chadwick Boseman? Would they successfully transition the Black Panther mantle from T'Challa to someone else? How would Namor work as an antagonist? And how would this film fit into the larger MCU. We discussed all of these things and more. Enjoy! You can follow Reese @MindOfReese on Instagram or MindOfReeseReviews on TikTok. I'm dropping back into your feed today with a special film and something new for me on this podcast. As I get back into the swing of reviewing indie films, every now and then a hidden gem will land in my lap and that is the case here. I knew this film was special as soon as I read the description so I brought Tyler with me to view the film and have a deep-dive discussion about it. We do a spoiler-free review to start before moving to the detailed discussion. Below is more information about the film so you know everything you need to know before diving in. SYNOPSIS - Female journalist Rahimi (Zar Amir Ebrahimi) travels to the Iranian holy city of Mashhad to investigate a serial killer who believes he is doing the work of God, cleansing the streets of sinners by murdering sex workers. As the body count mounts and Rahimi draws closer to exposing his crimes, the opportunity for justice grows harder to attain as the ‘Spider Killer' is embraced by many as a hero. Based on the horrific true story of serial killer Saeed Hanaei, acclaimed writer-director Ali Abbasi (Border) unveils a gripping crime thriller and a daring indictment of a society in which rough justice is routinely a fact of life. In this episode of the BibsCorner podcast, Bibs is joined by frequent collaborator Shad Miller to review a basketball documentary. The name Raymond Lewis is not one that you have heard most likely, but that is exactly why you should watch this documentary. Synopsis: The powerful, racially charged story of a “one-in-a-generation” basketball phenom from South Central Los Angeles—who was a first-round draft pick by the Philadelphia 76ers at age 19 in 1973, but who many believe was blackballed from the NBA and who never played in a professional game—is revealed in the award-winning documentary, Raymond Lewis: L.A. Legend." Shad and I both enjoyed this documentary for many reasons and if you are a basketball junkie and enjoy learning more about the history of the game, this documentary is a must-see. The movie is available as of November 1st on iTunes, Amazon Direct Video, Google Play, Microsoft, InDemand, Plex, Roku and Fandango. The Rock promised to shift the balance of power in the DCEU with Black Adam. This was his passion project, the character he has been trying to play for over a decade. The question is, did he accomplish his goal? I personally knew very little about Black Adam besides the fact that he was somehow tied to Shazam, and I knew that I enjoyed Shazam. I hoped that I would enjoy this movie just as much. Admittedly, as a person who doesn't watch trailers I had no idea what I was in for with this movie so all but the opening action scenes were new for me. In these 30 minutes, I'll tell you how I felt. She-Hulk released on Disney Plus with a lot less fanfare than the Marvel shows that came before it. The show also marketed itself differently selling itself as a lawyer sitcom with Superhero elements. They didn't lie, and while incels review bombed the series before it came out, there were those who legitimately could not get into the show. Bibs and Reese were not among them, but even so, the finale left some disappointed. In this spoiler review Bibs and Reese dive DEEP into the show, most specifically the last two episodes. Enjoy!
