Jason was lucky enough to visit PAX Unplugged earlier this month, and is eager to share about his experiences! Like the last few PAX recaps, not only does Jason give his own perspective (this time as a demoer for Starling Games teaching Everdell to 36 different groups), but we also hear from a few friends. All of these voices should be very familiar to regular ENGN listeners - Liz Davidon, Michael Kelley, Jeremy Howard, Brenna Noonan, Mike Dilisio, and more! In additon, we also have previews from some big upcoming projects in 2020 - Frosthaven from Cephalophair Games, Return to Dark Tower from Restoration Games, and Final Girl from Van Ryder Games. Jason also shows Van Ryder double love with a quick review of Bees: The Secret Kingdom. We at ENGN hope that everyone is having a very happy and healthy holiday season! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! We are very excited to continue bringing you old news – PAX Unplugged recap, part two!Jason shares about three more games that hit the table in and around PAX. First there’s Gem Rush, Second Edition (3:25), which is the first game that we will have reviewed twice on the pod. The Second Edition adds… more stuff! It doesn’t leave soot on your hands as you play! Jason is really excited to share about it. The next game is also a reiteration – Cosmic Run: Regeneration from Dr. Finn’s Games (8:46). If you liked Deep Space D6, Jason thinks there’s a chance you’ll like this one even more. We wrap up our reviews with one of the new adventure games from Martin Wallace, Wildlands (16:17). This one is getting a fair amount of buzz as a family friendly skirmish game with some Euro elements. After the reviews, we get into some bigger conversations about the board gaming industry, particularly some of the mergers going on. Good friend of the pod Brenna Noonan stops by to chat about Game Salute’s acquisition of Victory Point Games. Then, Stephen Buonocore from Stronghold and Tricia Victor from Indie Boards and Cards talk about the new company they have founded, Indie Game Alliance. Finally, we take a look at the digital side with Jeremy from Handelabra Games – they of the recently completed Aeon’s End Kickstarter.
After a brief paternity-induced hiatus, the Preview Series is back! We have a bit of an odd duck for you today. Jason wanted to cover the Nemo's War Kickstarter and generally catch up with Victory Point Games, so he reached out to see who would want to come on. After a while, all roads led to good friend of the show, Brenna Noonan with Game Salute. Brenna hops on the pod, not only to chat about the new Kickstarter for two mini-expansions for Nemo's War, but also three other projects that have launched under the Starling Games imprint - Archmage: Ascendant, Shadowrift: Boomtown, and King's Forge: Masterworks. All four of these projects are expansions with niche audiences, so we're happy to bring them to you. Check out if you want to hop on these evergreen titles.
PWe welcome back Brenna Noonan from Starling Games to talk about their newest 1 vs. many game, Anomaly, live on Kickstarter on October 21, 2018. This project was formerly called Ø: Fear Nothing. However, it struggled out of the gate, so Starling decided to pull the plug, repackage, offer a lower price point, and present the same game with a different name - Anomaly. Jason gives a bit of context for the campaign relaunch before presenting the episode. After the preamble, we present the former episode in its entirety. Where you hear the name "Ø: Fear Nothing", please translate that in your head as Anomaly. We get into where the (former) name came from and also how Anomaly distinguishes itself mechanically from similar 1 vs. Many games like Specter Ops. Anomaly probably has a bit too much interaction here to support solo play, but fans of high level, above the table cooperative play might be very interested in what it has to offer. Finally, somewhere in the episode, Jason gets on his soapbox and beseeches gamers everywhere to give companies a chance!
Jason is very, very, very excited to bring you an expansion to one of his favorite family-weight games. The Primordial expansion for Planetarium is current live on kickstarter. Brenna Noonan, who works for Game Salute and helped with the development with the expansion, stopped by the show to talk about how the two modules of the expansion directly addressed issues that people may have had with the base game. We also get a quick preview of the expansion for Everdell, also currently on Kickstarter. Brenna then goes into some shop talk about Game Salute. People hear the name "Game Salute" and they have feelings about it. Brenna gives her honest reaction to Game Salute's poor reputation, as well as what she and her company have done to rebound and move forward. Check out the project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sparkworks/planetarium-primordial-expand-your-planetarium-uni
