You do you, Walker always says, except he almost never does. Mark always says smoke 'em if you got 'em, despite his never uttering those words and frankly not knowing what they mean. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! We are very excited to continue bringing you old news – PAX Unplugged recap, part two!Jason shares about three more games that hit the table in and around PAX. First there’s Gem Rush, Second Edition (3:25), which is the first game that we will have reviewed twice on the pod. The Second Edition adds… more stuff! It doesn’t leave soot on your hands as you play! Jason is really excited to share about it. The next game is also a reiteration – Cosmic Run: Regeneration from Dr. Finn’s Games (8:46). If you liked Deep Space D6, Jason thinks there’s a chance you’ll like this one even more. We wrap up our reviews with one of the new adventure games from Martin Wallace, Wildlands (16:17). This one is getting a fair amount of buzz as a family friendly skirmish game with some Euro elements. After the reviews, we get into some bigger conversations about the board gaming industry, particularly some of the mergers going on. Good friend of the pod Brenna Noonan stops by to chat about Game Salute’s acquisition of Victory Point Games. Then, Stephen Buonocore from Stronghold and Tricia Victor from Indie Boards and Cards talk about the new company they have founded, Indie Game Alliance. Finally, we take a look at the digital side with Jeremy from Handelabra Games – they of the recently completed Aeon’s End Kickstarter.
After a brief paternity-induced hiatus, the Preview Series is back! We have a bit of an odd duck for you today. Jason wanted to cover the Nemo's War Kickstarter and generally catch up with Victory Point Games, so he reached out to see who would want to come on. After a while, all roads led to good friend of the show, Brenna Noonan with Game Salute. Brenna hops on the pod, not only to chat about the new Kickstarter for two mini-expansions for Nemo's War, but also three other projects that have launched under the Starling Games imprint - Archmage: Ascendant, Shadowrift: Boomtown, and King's Forge: Masterworks. All four of these projects are expansions with niche audiences, so we're happy to bring them to you. Check out if you want to hop on these evergreen titles.
In this week's show Ben sits down opposite publisher, podcaster and international sweet boy of games, Michael Fox. They talk about the disaster of Game Salute, the state of the hobby and his new life in Belfast...but which games did he choose?
For our final installment of GenCon reviews, we are dialing it back a bit and talking about some light, family weight games. In a way, we thought it was fitting since that's at the heart of what GenCon releases are all about - games meant to hit a lot of tables and where lots of families and groups can have a good time. Anthony leads off with a beautiful card game that masquerades as a worker placement, Everdell (4:20). Starling's parent company, Game Salute, has a negative reputation around the board gaming world, yet games like Everdell seem to promise a new era for the company. Jason jumps in next and talks about The Big Score (15:09), a drafting game with a solo variant from our friends at Van Ryder Games. Anthony then tells us about Petrichor (24:14), a game about... rain? It certainly has a unique theme, and Anthony will let you know whether it has mechanisms to match. Finally, and as a fitting capstone, Jason breaks down one of the hottest, most anticipated games of the con - the newest Forbidden game from Matt Leacock, Forbidden Sky (33:27).
Jason is very, very, very excited to bring you an expansion to one of his favorite family-weight games. The Primordial expansion for Planetarium is current live on kickstarter. Brenna Noonan, who works for Game Salute and helped with the development with the expansion, stopped by the show to talk about how the two modules of the expansion directly addressed issues that people may have had with the base game. We also get a quick preview of the expansion for Everdell, also currently on Kickstarter. Brenna then goes into some shop talk about Game Salute. People hear the name "Game Salute" and they have feelings about it. Brenna gives her honest reaction to Game Salute's poor reputation, as well as what she and her company have done to rebound and move forward. This is a fairly light tactical board game for two players, wherein each person seeks to conquer their opponent's city. In this Chess-like game, both players take turns recruiting and deploying handfuls of units onto the battlefield. When two opposing units face off against one another, dice are rolled to determine who lives and who dies. These pitched battles continues over a span of about 30-40 minutes until inevitably one side emerges the victor. We explore where Vici's blades shows some prowess as well as where they miss the mark. The Vici battlefield With 5 points from empty city spaces, this player recruited 3 new units After moving, the Bowmen now has the Horsemen in range to attack With die results of 5 to 4, the Spearmen defeats the Footmen Vici midgame PLUGS - (59:43): As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. In this episode of The State of Games, Dice, Darrell, TC, and Stephanie present a cornucopia of random discussion topics and rants, such as the need to include game boxes with your Kickstarter project, the Xenon Profiteer player-count debacle, and how to pair the right beverage to your games. All this plus GenCon, lots of unsweetened iced tea, New Bedford, Bottom of the 9th, the trainwreck that is Pixels, lots of Trivia Crack, and how to be the absolute best mountain you can be. DISCLAIMER: Lots of adult language in this episode, so parental discretion is advised.
First I want to apologize for the lateness of the of this week's podcast. I know its only a day late, but I still hate being late for anything. Second, I want to apologize for the reason its late. My mic apparently started crapping out part way through the episode and didn't realize it until post production. I spent a lot of time trying to bandage up this episode with my level one editing skills and I'm afraid it shows. The quality isn't up to its usual quality. (Not saying the regular quality of my editing is wonderfully great! =)) So hopefully the content makes up for the lackluster audio quality. As soon as this is posted I'm hitting up Amazon to pick me up a new mic setup. Its been on my list, but wanted to upgrade my computer first to make editing a lot less painful. So, on with the show notes! We have a major announcement at the end of the podcast. We are teaming up with Artem Safarov for our first giveaway!! Here's the details: I'm excited to announce my co-host Jason Washburn of Talon Strikes and I's first giveaway will be during the weekend of GenCant 2015! For those not in the know, GenCant is the Unofficial Unconventional Convention that coincides with Gen Con. This will be during the weekend of July 30th - August 2nd. BUT! Doesn't mean you can't start preparing for it now! We are not alone in this endeavor. We've called on a couple of friends of the podcast to help us make this thing as big as possible. But, we will also need your help in doing so! You see, we are in cahoots with, none other, than board game reviewer and designer Artem Safarov of Altema Games! Art has a project on Altema's website called Board Game Habitat. I'll just let him explain it: The purpose of this project is to have fun and find “natural habitats” for our favourite board games. It is meant as a collaborative project that many people can contribute to. The rules are simple – place a board game box in a setting that fits the theme of the board game and snap away! All quality images will be posted here with the credit given to the creator. You can head to Board Game Habitat for examples and inspiration. But that's not all who we're teaming up with for our first giveaway! The friendly folks at Cloud Cap Games of Portland, Oregon also are joining in on the action as they are the official sponsor of this giveaway. James and Kirsten of Cloud Cap Games were nice enough to donate, not one, not two, but THREE Board Games as giveaway prizes! They donated the frantic dice rolling game, Steam Park. Also, among the mix is the frantic, timed, cooperative game, Wok Star! published by Game Salute. And if that wasn't enough, our grand prize will be the hidden movement blockbuster game, Plaid Hat Games own SPECTER OPS!! How do you get in on this amazing swag, you ask??!! The Rules are simple! 1. Just follow the simple guideline for photo opportunity for Board Game Habitat: Place a board game box in a setting that fits the theme of the board game and snap away! Tweet the picture tagging @Ja_Hancock, @TalonStrikes, @CloudCapGames, and/or @ArtSafarov with the hashtags #BGHGiveaway #GenCant. All submissions will be entered into the giveaway. Winners will be hand selected by Artem, Wash, and I based on criteria: Most original and best photos Contest will run from July 30th- August 2nd We will choose and post the Top 10 photos here by August 4th People will be able to vote on them between August 5th and the 9th. Top three pictures with the most votes will be announced on August 10th! All quality submissions (not just the winners) will be posted on Altema's Board Game Habitat website with the credit given to the creator. Be sure to tweet and share about this giveway to everyone and all your friends! In this episode of The Long View, I'm pleased to be joined by first time guest Peter Bemis as we discuss the landmark game of Space Alert from noted designer Vlaada Chvtil. Is this the ultimate cooperative game? What has been this game's effect on later designs? Is it a trailblazer worthy of your attention, or should you leave it lost in space? Find out for yourself as we discuss this fascinating game along with the expansion Space Alert: The New Frontier, and designer Vlaada Chvtil in general. Thanks to Peter for being on the show! As a bonus, I also review two games. First up is the new Stronghold release of Among the Stars: The Ambassadors. Is this a worthy addition to the Among the Stars base game? What does it offer that makes it worthy of purchase in the post Essen flood? Listen and find out! The review can be found at the 1:26:30 mark of the episode. I also review the Game Salute title of Sunrise City. Is this a city building game made for you or a thinly veiled abstract? Is it challenging and fun? Does the theme come through? It is quite interesting to see how some people’s names get into the minds of the public and some others don’t. This is even more interesting when we consider that the products from the non-remembered people are really popular and of undeniable quality. This is the case with the guest being interviewed in the podcast for this episode, Mike Elliott. His portfolio of games is impressive to say the least. He’s worked on Magic: The Gathering and Pokemon TCG amongst others, and created Star Trek Fleet Captains, Thunderstone, Quarriors and more. You’d expect with those games under his belt, it would be easy for him to get publishers to agree to get his games out in no time. Things are not as simple, though! In his latest game, Sangoku, he’s teamed up with Game Salute to bring his latest creation, Sangoku, into production. Sangoku is a game of epic battle with roots in a game with thousand of years history with a seriously lovely looking oriental theme and artwork. As usual, your feedback is most appreciated, so please do feel free to email us on podcast@gmsmagazine.com and let us know what you think! Look forward to hearing from you and hope you enjoy the show!
In episode 48, the founders jump right in with a walkthrough and review of the Fantasy Flight Games release of Merchant of Venus (Standard Edition). We thank our wonderful sponsors Stronghold Games, Game Salute and MiniatureMarket.com and all the other great publishers for donating games to our GenCon cabalist meet up. We then present the Dice Tower Network contest - if you want to win a $50 gift certificate to CoolStuffInc.com, head over to the BoardGameGeek Guild and post your discussion topic suggestion to enter. Then Tony rattles off all the gaming news that passed over the news desk while we chime in. The gang then talks about deluxe editions of board games and how much lust they generate in our lives. We round out the show with a round table discussion about technology in role playing games and how we handle it (or have failed in the past).

To finish with the two special episodes and we’re going to do it with a bang! Since its birth just a few years ago, Game Salute has gone, not just from strength to strength, but has also helped greatly to shape the way games funded in Kickstarter have reached the backers. Starting as a fulfilment company and reaching the publisher status with terribly successful games, as well as incorporating companies like Clever Mojo Games to the portfolio of acquisitions and gathering an 18 strong team, Game Salute’s success can only be consider a meteoric. So I thought it’d be interesting to have a chat with Dan Yarrington, the mastermind behind Myriad games and Game Salute to see if we could unveil some of the secrets that have made his companies so successful. We got a lot! But of course the podcast wouldn’t be as amazing without the intervention of Dr Mike Reddy and Kara Gander. This time we discuss if using freelancers in gaming is a good or a bad idea… What do you think? Hope you enjoy the show! As always, feedback is extremely appreciated and you can send us an email at podcast@gmsmagazine.com. We very much look forward to hearing from you!

Getting the money for your Kickstarter project is a major step. Getting your game onto game store shelves is the ultimate goal. Dan Yarrington, founder of Game Salute, talks about helping successfully funded Kickstarter projects get their games into the retail channel and on store shelves.
I was originally going to riff on Ginsberg's Howl, but I confess I had completely forgotten what a monster of a piece it is--redolent in imagery and references that are very much of a time since past. I considered then moving on to Nelson's On the Road Again, and faced the opposite problem--man, that song has some simple lyrics. I guess Shelley and Shakespeare are the sweet spot. 01:24 AYURIS: Praga Caput Regni (Vladimír Suchý, Delicious Games, 2020)Games Played Last Week:03:56 -Shadowrift (Jeremy Anderson, Game Salute, 2012)06:41 -Jetpack Joyride: Deluxe Edition (Michał Gołębiowski, Lucky Duck Games, 2019)10:18 -Barcelona (Dani Garcia, Board&Dice, 2023)14:22 -Regicide (Paul Abrahams, Luke Badger, & Andy Richdale, Badgers from Mars, 2020)17:17 -Project: ELITE (Konstantinos Kokkinis, Sotirios Tsantilas, Artipia Games, 2016)20:33 -Ready Set Bet (John D.
