Hopefully by now, everyone is familiar with those first three notes from the first Black Sabbath album. During The Middle Ages, this was referred to as DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA (which is Latin, meaning “The Devil In Music”). While also known as “The Devil's Interval”, or in musical parlance simply as the tritone, SLAYER fans recognize DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA as the band's 8th album of sonic evilocity and darkness, and the 2nd with Paul Bostaph on the drums. Even though it was released on June 9, 1998, as the nu-metal era was peaking, DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is most definitely NOT Slayer's “nu-metal” album. It still possesses all the sinister signature sounds and the dark, macabre subject matter, but there's an unusual, experimental quality present on this album which defies definition and is unlike anything found on their previous albums. The overall production quality is much more aggressive and grittier, with the vocal performances utilizing some never-before used darker nuances, ensuring that DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA is an almost gratifyingly uncomfortable listening experience. It's time to get in touch with “good old ‘What's His Name?'” and discover the subtle yet hilarious differences between “chickpeas and garbanzo beans”. Find out “where to measure from” to ensure maximum accuracy, go ahead and “tune down your voice”, prepare for the most unsettling outro reel ever, fix yourself a bowl of hummus and JOIN US as we dive into the darkness of “The Devil In Music”, made manifest on SLAYER's DIABOLOUS IN MUSICA. May 2, 2013... a day that will live in infamy. Talkin' Slayer is back, to commemorate the 11th anniversary of Jeff Hanneman's untimely, shocking demise. One of the listeners asked if Jeff actively retreated from his dominant creative role in the band, following the disappointing reception of 1998's Diabolus in Musica. That's a good question. So we get into it, using some old facts and new statistics. The part of the podcast where author D.X. Ferris reads his Slayer band biography is over. For now. But stay tuned... Slayer is back. And Kerry King's solo album and tour about are nearly ready to go. So you'll have things you want to talk about. And I will too. If you haven't yet, please take a minute to answer two Slayer surveys — and tell some friends. They're all multiple choice questions. It's fast and easy. Pass it around. The more the better. Don't let the Slayer Nation think your favorite album suxx! 1) The Slaytanic Survey (Round 2): Please tell us about your favorite songs and albums. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/7YRH76S 2) The OTHER Slayantic Survey (Round 1): Who is Slayer's MVP? What was their best tour? Do you see the reunion coming? What's your LEAST favorite record?

Embark with us on a literary odyssey through the entangled destinies within R. Scott Bakker's "The Thousandfold Thought." Our seasoned panelists, Steve, Mike, Carl, and Varsha, return to dissect a world where power is as perilous as it is enticing. Witness Esmenet's swift rise and the moral labyrinths navigated by Kellhus, while we untangle the enigmatic Dunyain's place in this cryptic tapestry of high fantasy and philosophy. This episode spirals into the depths of transformation, war, and the arcane as words morph into weapons and holy wars evolve into indifferent monstrosities. We grapple with the haunting presence of demons, the fate of mages, and the unrelenting march of a narrative that carries our characters through darkness and despair. Our examination probes the psyche of the Nonmen, the mystery of the No-God, and the harrowing potential of a Diabolus ex Machina lurking in the folds of an epic saga.Culminating in a discussion that wades through Cormac McCarthy's "Blood Meridian" and parallels with Bakker's work, we confront the challenging themes of identity, sexual violence, and the nature of power. The rich tapestry of relationships, the weight of history, and the scars of conflict are laid bare as we near the story's tragic conclusion. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian heralds this episode in with a very royal fanfare and there is much merriment and delusion filled laughter as we hail the British King of fuzz. Brian hasn't been sleeping because he's been coming up with a multitude of crazy new ideas and he tells us about that as the guys trade age and caffeine based tales.Richard tries to give the episode a Halloween theme against a backdrop of mild protestations and we discover that Brian has been out gigging on the Chickin' Picken' circuit. Brian tells us about the scary movies he has seen and the guys talk about scary music and wax lyrical about John Carpenter's musical chops. Richard discusses "Diabolus in Musica" as the discussion on spooky music threatens to become intellectual but the guys quickly rectify that. Have you ever struck your elbow with a telecaster? It really hurts and the guys talk about guitar related mishaps before discussing a recent controversy in two parts starting with a discussion about "mojo" components and then the evil practice of dressing up newer components to look exactly like vintage ones. Meanwhile Brian has some unhygienic plans for the holiday season and makes a proclamation that has both his co-hosts questioning reality. Ai Gandalf reads the credits. After some introductory episodes, Talkin' Slayer tells the story of the Los Angeles heavy metal institution, in chronological order: how the band happened, when things fell apart, how they put them back together, and what it all meant — no, MEANS. After Episode Nine, Patreon supporters receive every weekly episode. Free listeners get every other episode, every other week. Learn more at Patreon.com/SlayerBook. Every week, host D.X. Ferris presents another chapter — sometimes two or three — in the history of Slayer, from the groundbreaking group's pre-history in Chile to their hazy, fractured, mysterious end in 2019. Slayer was the first Big Four band to break up. Why? Well, it's a long story... The Talkin' Slayer podcast program show is written, deeply researched, lightly edited, and mostly rehearsed, with some production value. This is an all-killer-no-filler podcast: The episode proper begins after roughly 60 seconds of introduction, tops. No need to skip the first 15 minutes. The music changes every week. Ferris is an award-winning writer. He has worked for Rolling Stone, Alternative Press, The AV Club, and Decibel magazine. He is a fan. He has opinions. He is the author of something like nine books, depending how you count them. Two are about Slayer. The first one is an entire book about the classic thrash album Reign in Blood, which is part of the fairly prestigious 33 1/3 book series. His bigger Slayer book, though, is the 2023 update of the full-on band biography "Slayer 66 & 2/3: A Metal Band Biography, POSTMORTEM Edition." (This is the third edition; it was previously known as "Slayer 66 & 2/3: The Jeff and Dave Years...."). And that book is mostly what he'll be talking about when we're talkin' Slayer. Most episodes are audio adaptations of chapters from that book. Some have original and/or bonus material. Thank you for checking it out. Learn more at...

What is the Devil's Interval? Well in music theory it is also known as the augmented 4th and/or the diminished 5th, but it is basically a set of notes that are 3 whole notes apart that when played together creates dissonance. The sounds created are so distorted that it was rumored to have been banned by the Catholic church. A lot of blues music is composed this way and interestingly enough it is in a lot of popular music. You can find it in the intro to the Simpsons television series, in the Wandavision series by Disney, and in a few of Lady Gaga's songs, but the song titled "Judas" in particular. Many believe that playing these tones have the ability to summon the Devil and drive people to madness. Another term used to describe these notes is "Diabolus in Musica". What it is sure to do is create a sense of uneasiness within you. Join us as we look a little further into this topic. Also, Do you have a story to share?
