Welcome to 2025, and also to Episode 96 of The Last Standee Podcast! Moderation and sobriety mark the start of the year with the A Team (Alexis-Audrey-Alessio, cue '80s music), while we learn in the Standee catch-up what everyone has been up to (spoiler: it's flu, mostly. And dealing with job market. Yeah, moderation and sobriety). After that, we begin dabbling into games (I hope you will appreciate the effort put into finding a good name for the episode) - Alessio tells us about Steam Power, a long-awaited game from THE Martin Wallace about trains and economy. Big names come to mind. The question is, is this game up to the likes of the legends of the past? (spoiler: it's an entire different thing - for the rest, you'll have to listen to the episode. After that, it's trains again, with Alexis presenting us Next Station game series. Ever wondered what all the fuss was about, or which one to pick in a pinch? Today's your lucky day, then! Finally, Audrey closes the triptych for this episode with Knight: An Avalon RPG - a French production just recently landed to international audiences. And if Space Knights of the Round Table with Saint Seiya armors doesn't even make you flinch, you have a heart of stone and I feel sorry for you (and yes, that title for a movie is taken, sorry!) Let's begin the new year with a BANG! (No, not with Bang!. Or yes, if you want - we just won't be talking about it).

Martin arrived in Clongowes in 1979 for a few years teaching having just qualified - he thought. In 2013 the Board of Management appointed him Assistant Headmaster of Clongowes succeeding Martin Nugent. He joined the academic staff originally in 1979 and became a stalwart of the English and Latin departments ever since. He has contributed to many other areas of school life including drama, soccer and chess and also served as Academic Year Head in the Higher Line. In more recent years he was very instrumental in the success of the Alberto Hurtado Programme While Clongowes is known as a fee-paying private school, 10 per cent of the student cohort are part of the Alberto Hurtado Bursary programme, named in honour of a Chilean Jesuit Saint who himself received a scholarship in a Jesuit school. “This is not about charity - this is about changing the school and making it better by having a more diverse community and a socio economically diverse community. Their presence benefits everyone in the school because otherwise you end up with a ghetto of affluence and that's not a good educational environment either,” he says. They'll give their own critical impressions, tell you about the history of the game and its impact, and what relevance these games still have in the modern hobby landscape.    In this episode of Cult of the Old we visit the industrial revolution in England through the game Brass. With a new edition, called Brass:Lancashire, released through Roxley Games in the not too distant past, this game has caught the limelight again and reminded everyone what a powerhouse designer Martin Wallace is. This month we welcome back the very game Steve Lamattina as we put on our witch's hats, grab our brooms and head out into Lancre to solve problems in Martin Wallace's The Witches, the fourth official Discworld board game. As Tiffany Aching or one of her fellow apprentice witches, you'll run around Lancre solving problems big and small with headology and magic, helped by an assortment of local characters. But it's not just about getting the highest score - you'll also need to watch each other's backs or everyone in the kingdom could lose! Be sure to stop and share tea, or you might end up a cackler... Which witch is your favourite? How does The Witches rank against the other Discworld board games? Do you see it as a great family game, a mediocre co-op challenge, or something in between? Who do you wish had been included as a card or playable character? And would you use the game to introduce your friends to board games, the Discworld, or both? Check out the episode notes for pictures of the game components, and use the hashtag #Pratchat67 on social media to join in the conversation on this one! Steve Lamattina is a writer and editor whose work spans film, music, education and technology. He was once CEO of the youth publishing company Express Media, whom we still stan, and currently works for the Victorian Department of Education. You can find him on Twitter as @steve_lamattina. Next month we're going back...back to nearly the beginning! Yes, for #Pratchat68 we're setting the procrastinator coordinates for 1981 as we read and discuss Pratchett's proto-Discworld sci-fi novel Strata. It's a nice short book to get in before we tackle The Long Utopia in July... Use the hashtag #Pratchat68 to send us questions about Strata! Cornwall, the early 19th century. Tin and copper mines are popping up everywhere. These metals are so important for the Empire. Tin is used in many alloys and copper to clad the ships of the Royal Navy. Both industries attract more and more people and lead to new developments and inventions. The growing demand for efficient water pumps leads to the development of the steam engine, which in turn allows the building of the first steam trains. However, it is the people who are at the heart of all of this activity and their daily walk from their homes to the mines becomes known as the Tinners' Trail by Martin Wallace from Alley Cat Games. Returning guest, author Amie Kaufman heads back to the Chalk with Liz and Ben to face the rough music in a bumper-size discussion of the penultimate Tiffany Aching book, 2010's I Shall Wear Midnight. Tiffany Aching, nearly sixteen, is no longer an apprentice. Now two years under the witch's hat, she cares for those as can't care for themselves, and deals with the harsh realities of rural life. But all is not well in the Chalk: the unending need for its only witch is pushing Tiffany to the edge, and an act of violence - and its consequences - test her limits. Roland, the Baron's son, is engaged - but not to Tiffany. While he's away, the old Baron dies, and Tiffany must fetch him home to take his place. And on top of all that, something is stirring: something old and evil that stirs up old prejudices and fears about witches - and is aiming them directly at Tiffany Aching... Content note: this episode contains discussion of (fictional) intimate partner and family violence, miscarriage and suicide. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the Wikipedia list of crisis lines to find one local to you. Nearly three years after she danced the Dark Morris and kissed the Wintersmith, we rejoin Tiffany Aching, who is discovering that even fixing her mistakes can have consequences. But is this really a book for younger readers - or even young adults - when it includes some of the heaviest stuff of any Discworld novel? Does it all hang together, or are there a few ideas fighting each other in this plot? Who knew what and when about the Cunning Man, and is he Pratchett's creepiest villain yet? What spill words do you not say when you're listening to the show? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat66 on social media! Returning guest Amie Kaufman is the author of (so far) twenty novels for middle grade and young adult audiences, including the Illuminae Files and Aurora Cycle sci-fi trilogies with Jay Kristoff; the Elementals, Starbound and Unearthed series with Meagan Spooner, and the World Between Blinks books with Ryan Graudin. For Pratchett fans she recommends her upcoming YA fantasy novel Isles of the Gods, launching in May 2023. As mentioned in the episode, Amie also produces two podcasts about writing: Amie Kaufman on Writing, a 10-minute masterclass on writing techniques, and Pub Dates, in which she and co-writer Meagan Spooner take you behind the scenes on writing and publishing a novel, and what comes after. For more of Amie's exploits visit amiekaufman.com or sign up for her Substack newsletter Finding North. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our web site. Catch Liz in person when she's one of the speakers for the Sci-Fight science comedy debate “Should we fear AI?” on Thursday, 13 April 2023 at Howler in Melbourne! The canal era was over. It was the time of the steam railways. The industrial revolution was in full swing and coal was at the heart of new, booming industries. A lot of iron was needed to build the infrastructure that would allow resources and goods to be shipped around the country. The workforce needed to be kept happy and beer was the perfect lubricant for this task. The rise of cotton mills, potteries and manufacturing gave us the opportunities to earn our Brass: Birmingham by Gavan Brown, Matt Tolman and Martin Wallace from Roxley Games. In this episode, Valencia Martin Wallace and I do a critical examination of our innovation ecosystem and how we can make it more diverse and inclusive. Valencia is the Deputy Commissioner for Patents for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and is the executive lead for the USPTO's Council for Inclusive Innovation (CI2). Valencia shares data regarding how women and minorities are underrepresented in the innovation ecosystem. You can feel her passion for the topic and for strengthening the innovation and IP community as a whole. In this episode, Jeff Harty and Valencia Martin Wallace discuss: Valencia's passion for growth and support in the IP community. The creation of CI2 and why it is necessary. The benefits of having a more diverse innovation ecosystem. Strategies and initiatives to build a more diverse and inclusive innovation ecosystem by encouraging participation demographically, geographically, and economically.Key Takeaways: While 30 percent of engineers and scientists who are working professionally are women, less than 12 percent have their names on patents. The story does not end when an invention is patented—it takes a community to take the patented invention further into commercialization and usage. By closing the gender gap, $12–$28 trillion can be added to the global economy. Innovators are not created; they are born. It is a matter of helping those innovators get a rich education and giving them opportunities to help not only themselves, but also the nation. “It takes a community to move forward in every field but especially when integrating technology and law.” — Valencia Martin Wallace   About Valencia Martin Wallace: As deputy commissioner for patents, Valencia manages and leads the USPTO's efforts related to international IP harmonization and provides executive oversight over patent-examining functions in the technologies of communication, mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and medical devices and processes. She provides executive leadership on international patent legal issues and various work-sharing efforts with international partners. Valencia is the executive lead for the USPTO's Council for Inclusive Innovation (CI2). The CI2 will help guide the USPTO in developing a comprehensive national strategy to build a more diverse and inclusive innovation ecosystem. As deputy commissioner for patent quality, Valencia was responsible for sustaining the quality of the patent examination processes and products. In her 28-year career at the USPTO, she also oversaw software technology centers, served as executive co-lead on the implementation of the AIA First-Inventor-to-File statutory framework, and led the implementation of the Office of Patent Examination Support Services.Valencia earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Howard University and a juris doctorate from The George Washington University School of Law. This is (for) hardcore (fans): in celebrating the work of singer, radio host, memoirist and Greatest Living Englishman Jarvis Cocker, we could have picked anything from a Wes Anderson film to a Harry Potter one. Instead, Graham and Ewan have reunited for a look at a true collectors item, his 1999 Channel 4 documentary series about outsider art. See Jarvis tour the world visiting houses, gardens, castles and churches made by people with no architectural training, all of which look better than that description implies. Along the way, we'll be diving into the rest of Jarvis's screen career, including the 2014 documentary Pulp: A Film About Life, Death and Supermarkets, which Ewan has just covered elsewhere. We'll also be talking about the legacy of Britpop - which, yes, means Graham gets to tell the "cagoules" story again - speculating on Johnny Marr's pub habits and deciding, once and for all, what the best Pulp album is. The answer may surprise you! This is most stimulating episode of High Truths. Seriously! We will be talking about a brain stimulator.  While it is not approved for use in addiction, is can help insomnia and depression. Not every problem needs a drug as a solution. It is refreshing to learn about alternatives. Charles “Chip” Fisher Founder Fisher Wallace Laboratories Charles Avery Fisher, known as Chip, is a lifelong New Yorker. He earned his BA from Harvard University, and started his career with IBM's Data Processing Division, winning the Top Salesman award in under two years. He later founded and sold several companies before establishing Fisher Wallace Laboratories with the late Martin Wallace, PhD. Chip serves on the board of the Avery Fisher Artists Programs and Virtual Music Academy. Over the years he has been active in many nonprofits including being one of the founding board members for City Harvest. In late 2006, entrepreneur Chip Fisher joined Dr. Martin Wallace, PhD, CCN, CAd to purchase the patents of an FDA-sanctioned medical device that treats depression, anxiety and insomnia that produces a small dose of alternating current, of the same voltage level as a mobile home phone. Developed by NASA engineer Dr. Saul Liss in 1990s, reviewed and approved by the FDA at the time, the Fisher Wallace Cranial Stimulator is used to increase levels of dopamine, serotonin and also lowers cortisol, the stress hormone, without the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Peer reviewed studies have been published in noted medical journals and research has been conducted at some of the country's top medical schools and hospitals, including Harvard Medical School, Columbia Medical School, Mass. General Hospital, NYU Medical Center, NYC's Mount Sinai Medical Center (Beth Israel Hosp.), and the University of Maryland. Fisher Wallace has been well-positioned to take advantage of the movement away from pharmaceuticals as the only option for treating mental health symptoms. Treatment of depression, anxiety and insomnia across the board has seen great advancements in non-pharmacological methods. Many individuals are either not suited for pharmaceutical drugs for reasons of health, age, or ideology. In addition, drugs have significant side effects and for many, are not the treatment of choice given effective alternatives. Treatment with the Fisher Wallace Stimulator has no noteworthy side-effects, is a mobile and an at-home treatment, requires 20 min sessions up to twice a day, and has results showing great effectiveness for more than 70% of those who use it.
