In this special episode we celebrate the last four years with clips from twelve of the best 100 shows we've recorded in that time.  Following an intro from Spandau Ballet mainmain Gary Kemp speaking in January 2023, we reflect on what we have (or haven't) learned over those four years, then play and discuss clips from these episodes: Record Mirror legend Norman Jopling on first seeing the "Rollin' Stones" in 1963 (December 2021)  Writer-photographer Val Wilmer on interviewing Jimi Hendrix in 1967 (May 2024) the Village Voice's Richard Goldstein on not caring if he was "America's first rock critic" (September 2022) Creem veteran Jaan Uhelszki remembering her "almost famous" colleague Lester Bangs (May 2022) Author-filmmaker Nelson George on not reviewing the Brothers Johnson as if they were Bob Dylan (July 2021) Billboard's first rap editor Havelock Nelson on being influenced by Nelson George (March 2025) NPR's Ann Powers on being influenced by Greil Marcus (June 2024) The New Statesman's Kate Mossman on her (not-so) secret passion for jazz fusion (February 2022) "Freak-folk" icon Vashti Bunyan on her love of hymns and carols (April 2022) Vashti's 1970 producer Joe Boyd on producing Kate & Anna McGarrigle and the magic of sibling harmonies (September 2024) and... Island Records mogul Chris Blackwell recalling the al fresco recording of John Martyn's 'Small Hours' (September 2022) After our navel-gazing saunter down memory lane, Mark tells us about the week's new audio interview, in which Amy Linden asks Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel about [the] Fugees' classic 1996 album The Score. Mark then quotes from newly-added RBP library pieces about David Bowie's Diamond Dogs (1974), Tears for Fears (1982) and Jeffrey Lee Pierce (1985) and Jasper wraps things up with thoughts on pieces about System of a Down (2003) and ex-Black Midi man Geordie Greep (2024). Finally, a big shout-out to the many great guests who've joined us over the past four years: thank you all for your time and reminiscences! Pieces discussed: Norman Jopling on Record Mirror + Rhythm & Blues + Rolling Stones, Val Wilmer on free jazz + photography + Lesley Gore audio, Richard Goldstein on '60s pop writing + the Shangri-Las + Shadow Morton, Robert Duncan & Jaan Uhelzski on Lester Bangs + Creem + Suicide, Nelson George on the Death of R&B + Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis audio, Havelock Nelson on Hip Hop + Missy Elliott + Atlantic Records, Ann Powers on Joni Mitchell + Tori Amos + Women in Pop, Vashti Bunyan on Wayward + Nick Drake + Joe Boyd audio, Joe Boyd on global music + Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Chris Blackwell on Island from Millie to U2 + Bunny Wailer, The Fugees (1996), David Bowie: Diamond Dogs (RCA Victor), Tears For Fears: Ready Teddy Go!, Jeffrey Lee Pierce: On The Trail Of The Wild Weed, System of a Down: "We're in World War III!"

In an immortal era for British indie guitar music, out of the holy trinity of BCNR, Black Midi and Squid - they are now the only ones with either their original lead singer or who haven't split entirely. Their excellent third album is every bit as good as their first and a tiny bit less so than their classic second. Another cohesive, oblique look at the absolute state of society and the world around them.

Geordie Greep was the lead singer and guitarist for the celebrated British rock band black midi. With that band on indefinite hiatus, Greep is now focused on his own songs, which range freely across the musical landscape, encompassing jazz-rock and blues, but also country and Brazilian music. Hold on tight, for there are "stop-starts, blasts and bangs, and whispered soliloquies as [the listener] is never quite sure when, or whether, [one is] supposed to be shocked; or laugh", (Rough Trade Records). For the last 5 years, London band Black Midi have pushed experimental rock music to new and thrilling places, inspired as much by jazz fusion as math rock and no wave. But last month, quite unexpectedly, the trio split up. It was meant to be kept a secret, until singer and frontman Geordie Greep announced the news on Instagram. One week later, he announced his debut solo album, boldly titled The New Sound (out this month via Rough Trade Records).  Stu visited Geordie at his home shortly after these two bits of indie-shaking news broke, to discuss the end of the Black Midi and the start of Greep's solo career, as well as his time at the prestigious Brit School, and what makes Angels by Robbie Williams actually a very good pop song.  Also on this week's show, Greg and Stu pick apart the week's headlines, lament being so rubbish at predicting who would win the Mercury Prize, and count down the greatest award show speeches of all time.  You can watch clips of the podcast online now, just give us a follow on Instagram @midnightchatspod.  Further reading/listening/viewing Black Midi Loud And Quiet interview Geordie Greep 'Holy Holy' video Lenny Henry full MOBO 2015 speech Bjork's grateful grapefruit Credits: Editing by Stuart Stubbs  Mixing and mastering by Flo Lines Artwork by Kate PriorSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Steven and Ian begin today's episode with a review of Phoenix's performance at the Olympics last weekend, and the maddening idea that every band from the aughts is now being lumped into the made-up phenomenon known as "indie sleaze" (1:09). From there, they move on to the news that the proggy British post-punk band Black Midi has apparently broken up. The guys discuss their brief career and the surprisingly wide influence they have had on other acts (13:38).Then they talk about Wishy, the Indiana-based shoegaze outfit that has emerged as one of 2024's most hyped young bands. Their debut full-length, Triple Seven, is out today, and Steven loves it while Ian is more reserved in his judgement (24:49). After that, they move on to discussion about Ween, who Steven wrote about this week. He wonders whether Ian has a "yay or nay" assessment of the cult duo (39:15). In the mailbag, a listener asks about the strangest place the guys have either seen a show, and Steven talks about seeing the '90s rap group Onyx and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham at two different high schools (47:01).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the playful pop of Porter Robinson while Steven stumps for the Georgia rock band Futurebirds (53:26).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Happy Thanksgiving! We've reassembled to celebrate the holiday together and enjoy a sponsor paid feast of, mostly potatoes. We're recounting the concerts that we're most thankful for, and we'd love to hear about yours (Comment on our episode page):Nick decided to spin this topic and broke his three into categories. First are the concerts with friends, like the King Gizzard & Black Midi shows he saw with Jay last year. Next we have concerts with family, like Queens of the Stone Age with his brother Alex, Local Natives with his sister Jillian, and the Brian Regan show earlier in the year with Mom, siblings & their spouses. Finally, it's concerts performed by friends and attended with friends and family…which was just a way to bring up the Red Not Chili Peppers.Songs:King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - “Presumptuous” Queens of the Stone Age - “My God is the Sun (Live at The Anthem)”Local Natives - “Wide Eyes (Live at 9:30 Club)”Red Not Chili Peppers - “Can't Stop”Greg runs through the shows that he's most thankful for seeing, particularly because the artists he saw have since passed. In 2001, Greg and a college buddy had the chance to catch Pantera at Towson Center Arena. That same year, Greg's interest in jazz is piqued when he attends a Michael Brecker Masterclass at the University of Maryland. Finally, his freshman year of high school, he stood front and center for the Stone Temple Pilots show at the Patriot Center. Songs:Pantera - “Walk'Michael Brecker (w/ Herbie Hancock and Roy Hargrove) - “The Sorcerer (Live at Massey Hall)”Stone Temple Pilots - “Crackerman”Jay received the best kind of Christman present from his Aunt Patti, concert tickets! In 1997 he saw American Bluegrass musician Russ Barenberg at a small venue in Tennessee. Next up, it's springtime, junior year in high school, and a weekend away with his girlfriend in Philadelphia to see the Dave Matthews Band. Finally, if you know Jay, you've likely heard this one. Bruce Springsteen at M&T Stadium, Jay is in the front row because of the Boss' general admission lottery system. This week's guest is NNAMDÏ. The Chicago-based singer, rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist has put out a ton of great music since 2020 (including his acclaimed new Sooper Records / Secretly Canadian album, Please Have a Seat). He's performed with Wilco, Sleater-Kinney, Black Midi, Jeff Rosenstock and Speedy Ortiz. He has garnered acclaim from Kasey Musgraves and he was named "Chicagoan of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune. Before he was an accomplished artist on the cusp of even bigger and better things, NNAMDÏ was living in the Chicago suburb of Lansing, drumming in rock bands and teaching himself to record by writing songs about butts for his friends. Recently, just prior to the release of Please Have a Seat and the upcoming U.S. tour (including an Oct. 20 show at Cactus Club), NNAMDÏ spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about making the new album, getting back on the road again, as well as some of the hopes and plans he has for the near future. Along the way, he also talked about playing drums in his middle school's jazz band, starting a group called The Para-Medics, playing basement shows and comic book shops in high school, dabbling in self-recording and rapping, and how lighthearted material about booties and inside jokes inadvertently paved the way to a successful solo career. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering, Lakefront Brewery and Music Go Round Greenfield. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Greg's coming in strong with three stories on his latest edition of “Heard It Through The GregVINE”.We hear a song and talk about the life of Zeebo Steele, the DC Reggae singer, known most prominently for his work with the Thievery Corporation - (Song: The Richest Man in Babylon) - Also, check out Zeebo's work over on Spotify.Huntsville has become the first ‘music city' in Alabama. We learn what that means and why it's so freaking cool [Brookings]Finally, Greg has a snark laden NY Times story on the Winklevoss Twins cover band concert in Amagansett [NY Times]Jay, via our silent friend of the show, Kresimir Tokic, came upon some tracks by Dawes that are appearing on their upcoming album “Misadventures of Doomscroller” to be released tomorrow (July 22, 2022). They've changed their approach and we like it very much. Check out these tracks and see if you wanna listen further:Songs:Dawes - “Everything Is Permanent”Dawes - “Ghost in the Machine”Nick was surprised to see a new album drop by a band he's loved from the start. black midi released their third album “Hellfire” last Friday and it's been received extremely well by the critics. Nick feels this is entirely justified and that they're finally coming into their own. Greg makes the point that he finds it hard to get into music that he can't share with others…and this may fit that description. Their execution is flawless, but it's all over the place. If you enjoy it too, please let Nick know over on Facebook.Songs:black midi - “Sugar/Zhu” into “Eat Men Eat”black midi - “Still”black midi - “Dangerous Liaisons”

It seems a lot of early '00s bands have been rolling out music lately. Recently, we've gotten new material by The Mars Volta, Wilco, and Arcade Fire, but the list truly goes on. Now, Interpol is the latest early aughts icon to release a new project with their seventh studio album The Other Side of Make-Believe. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen discuss the band's legacy and how their new music compares to their early catalog (33:13).This week also had a few headline-worthy indie news stories. Lana Del Rey went public with her new boyfriend Jack Donoghue, who happens to be in the witch house band SALEM (1:38), prompting the question: "How the hell did those two meet?" Perhaps the most baffling news this week came from the January 6th hearings, where an ex-member of far-right group The Oathkeepers wore a Descendents t-shirt while testifying. Of course, Descendents were quick to distance themselves from the organization (6:57).The Recommendation Corner (50:26) this week has Ian revisiting The Blood Brothers discography while Steven shouts out the new album by Nightlands, the instrumental side project of The War On Drugs' Dave Hartley.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. I feel like I've been very close to meeting Marta for sometime now. When I went to the Sonic Ranch and met Brad Cooke he was mentioning this amazing woman who was a tape whisperer and I was determined to meet her. She sounded like the coolest! I had also heard her name through the master of mastering, Heba Kadry and then she sounded even more like the coolest! I managed to get in touch with Marta and we started talking about this interview a long time ago. I almost thought it might not happen but here we are! Marta is a force. She's worked on some very special music and I think that's no coincidence. She brings a deep understanding and passion to everything she does and the extra care and analog workflow really makes a huge difference when she does it, expecially with the tape effects and treatments in full view. Love that! She's worked with Bjork, Animal Collective, M.I.A., Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Black Midi, Holly Hearndon and the list goes on and on! just much great work. At the MPG Awards, she won Breakthrough Engineer of the Year in 2018. !!!! We had such a lovely chat. So happy this one finally happened :) As a nod to Marta's tape passion, the nitty sees me hearing double as I delve into the delightful world of ADT. It was a technique invented by Ken Townsend in the Beatles era and it still sounds so juicy as an effect when performed with a real tape machine. Essentially you're layering 2 copies of a track with something that sounds very similar but different to the source. During my experiments, I came across maybe my fave treatment on a nitty. Walt Disco is a young stylish band from Glasgow. Over the last two years they wrote, recorded and self produced their debt album, Unlearning  (Out April 1st on Lucky Number Music).  In this episode Joe talks with 2 members of the sextet, singer James and keyboardist/guitarist Finley.   James and Finely share the process of making Unlearning , why they wanted it to sound "scrappy", how that forced them to think differently and why self producing gave them a sense of childlike wonderment.   We learn what drives them to have a strong stylized aesthetic and they share a couple stories from their experience playing the Celine show in Paris.  They also discuss the influence of new wave AND no wave and tell us what they love about touring. We hear a couple tunes from Unlearning.  https://waltdisco.bandcamp.com/musichttps://www.luckynumbermusic.com/releases/https://www.izotope.com/https://us.minorfigures.com/
