Sarah Bergenfield is a certified Level 3 IFS practitioner, writer, and educator specializing in autistic individuals and couples. Autistic herself, Sarah weaves together IFS, polyvagal theory, predictive processing, and sensory science in her clinical and consultation work. She teaches internationally for clinicians working with neurodiverse clients, and her work reframes autism not as a deficit, but as a condition of sensory surplus. Martha Sweezy is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, program consultant and supervisor at the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion at Cambridge Health Alliance, and a psychotherapist in private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. She teaches IFS nationally and internationally and has authored and co-edited numerous books on the model, including Internal Family Systems Therapy, Second Edition (with Richard Schwartz), Intimacy from the Inside Out (with Toni Herbine-Blank), and Internal Family Systems Therapy for Shame and Guilt.Together, Sarah and Martha are co-authors of Wired to Feel: Autism as a Condition of Sensory Surplus.In this episode, we explore the role of uncertainty in mental health: how it can quietly drive distress and shame, and how IFS offers a path toward resolution. The full e-mail: I love my dog, but I love my child more. The following may reveal my own selfishness in that I don't want my child to choose what he desires (a life without Christ). Though I believe in freewill, I am almost to the point where I wish God did not grant it. I'd rather have my child "a robot" in Heaven with God and me than have him freely choose his eternal destination. I am concerned for a day when my son's sin takes him to the point of a totally seared conscience. Though my son is not a drug addict, a drug addict gets to the point of addiction when he knows not what he does in harming his own body, mind, etc. Isn't any sin this way? We know not what we do. We, as fallible creatures, don't know what's best for us. Only our Creator knows this, and yet He allows us to choose wrongly?!? Why?!? Why would God take an animal to heaven while allowing a mother or father who would die for their child (a human being made in God's image, unlike an animal, and "worth more than the birds of the air") to be separated from him for eternity? It is said that to have loved and then lost is better than to have never loved at all, but I'm not so sure right now. Pictures and memories of my son's "innocence" in childhood haunt me. Yet some say God wipes away such memories in Heaven, but don't you think we will know more, not less, in Eternity? To wipe that child from one's memory seems diminishing. Even to suggest annihilation (a theory I don't favor) would not soften the wounds of loss to a mother's heart. No longer existing seems to delegitimize any life. Even the truth of someday having a better understanding of God's holiness and justice regarding my own flesh and blood is gut wrenching (I agree we all deserve Hell). Why are we to lay down our lives for sinners now in reaching them for Christ but will eventually rejoice in jubilation when the time of their destruction comes? Why would God have fashioned such motherly sentiments to unconditionally love and sacrificially nurture if we were to suffer this pain of eternal separation? If God loves me and if God knew my child would not follow Him, why did He bring about a world allowing him to be created? Or to survive infancy? Theoretically, even abortion (God forbid!) would have been a better outcome as, if I'm correct in my theology, such would eventually reunite us. Is abortion a virtue in that all babes are saved from damnation? God forgive the thought! We are told to be fruitful and multiply, but why even risk having children if there's a possibility of having even one child…or grandchild or great grandchild or a great-great separated from you forever? Obedience beyond understanding? I don't want one from my family tree or one acquaintance or even one stranger to be lost! The only remedy I see to this scenario as we are to love even our enemies is universal reconciliation, also a theory I do not favor...because of free will! Can you help me with these excruciating dilemmas? For my sanity's sake I have to believe all my children will be with God in eternity, but since I don't believe universalism is biblical, what of those others who will be separated eternally from loved ones? Is the only answer to trust God? I love kobold adventures because they always lie to you. They start with the same sales pitch every time. Oh, it's kobolds. Funny little lizard guys. Maybe some traps. Couple slings. Tiny crown. Cute little dungeon crawl. And then six sessions later you're dealing with ancient dwarven grudges, undead labor theology, emotional damage, cursed relics, fantasy Vecna, and one kobold who should have died three times but keeps showing up because sheer pettiness has apparently made him immortal. Kobolds are never the adventure. Kobolds are what the adventure uses to lure you into the basement. Show Notes This week we did a full postmortem on Crown of the Kobold King and dug into one of Pathfinder's earliest adventures revisited for Second Edition. What starts as a straightforward kobold dungeon crawl quickly turns into a surprisingly layered story full of ancient dwarven vaults, undead corruption, cursed relics, and one increasingly unfortunate kobold king. We broke down the setting of Darkmoon Vale and Falcon's Hollow, the lumber town run by a spectacularly terrible administrator, before diving into the dungeon itself and the history behind Droskar's Crucible. The adventure piles old Torag worshippers, fallen dwarven cultists, Tar-Baphon lore, and necromantic experiments on top of each other until the kobolds become almost incidental to the chaos. The campaign also delivered some incredible table moments. A near total party kill was saved by remembering a forgotten +1 bonus at the last possible second. Sir Thanah evolved from heal bot NPC into one of the emotional anchors of the campaign. Cap Mech somehow transformed from random kobold encounter into recurring rival, revenant menace, and eventual ally. Meanwhile Kirby continued solving problems the traditional way by casting Brick. We also spent time talking encounter design, what worked, what absolutely did not, and why some dungeon sections deserved immediate deletion. Looking at you, anti gravity hallway. By the end, the adventure became less about stopping the Kobold King and more about the people trapped inside the dungeon's history and deciding who deserved saving. Software doesn't become hard to maintain only because the code is messy. It often becomes hard to maintain because the reasoning behind it disappears. In this episode of Maintainable, Robby Russell talks with Russ Olsen about trade-offs, legacy systems, and why maintainability depends on context more than dogma. Russ brings decades of experience across very different kinds of systems, each with its own definition of what “maintainable” actually means. A central theme is that software must be understandable to the people maintaining it. Teams tend to document implementation details well, but often fail to capture system-level intent and the trade-offs behind major decisions. Russ makes the case for preserving that thinking, including the alternatives that were rejected, so future maintainers don't have to rediscover it the hard way. The conversation also touches on Russ's book Eloquent Ruby, Second Edition. Rather than teaching syntax, the book focuses on how Ruby is actually used in practice and why common patterns exist. That leads into a discussion about where elegance improves maintainability, and where it turns into unnecessary cleverness. From there, the episode shifts into the realities of working in legacy systems. Russ explains how teams develop pessimism over time, often accepting flawed assumptions about how their systems behave.
