In this episode of The Gateway Gamers Podcast, Bryan Marvel and Rp dive into Everdell: Duo, the latest Everdell adventure from Starling Games! This scaled-down version of the beloved tableau-building and worker-placement game Everdell brings the charm, strategy, and adorable woodland creatures to an intimate head-to-head experience. We discuss how Everdell: Duo differs from the original, what makes it stand out among other two-player board games, and how it fits into the growing trend of big-box games getting two-player adaptations (looking at you, 7 Wonders Duel, King Of Tokyo Duel, and more!). Is this a must-have for couples and gaming duos, or should you stick to the original? Join us as we break down the gameplay, mechanics, components, and replayability—all while keeping it fun, engaging, and perfect for both casual gamers and hobbyists.
In Episode 11, we review Everdell by Starling Games and discuss our first and second impressions of the game. To start off the episode, we chat about what's bringing us joy: Splendor Duel, Wyrmspan, Hegemony, Rebel Princess, and Carcassonne. Over the river and through the woods to Everdell we go! Beneath the Ever Tree, we curate our cities by building constructions and inviting critters to inhabit those spaces. In this worker placement and tableau building game, you play through the seasons at your own pace as you gain points through playing cards into your city and being the first to complete public objectives. Look for combos to capitalize on when bringing critters into your city and through card abilities that synergize–though be wary, you may find yourself in a loop of actions that don't elevate your city; we've lost many to this affliction: Everdelling. Some say, Angela is still upstairs Everdelling, eternally stuck in second place. Catch a glimpse of Everdelling in action on instagram @boardgamehomies

There was a time you could just stroll in a big box store in the United States and just buy a miniatures skirmish game that was actually pretty good. Sure, it didn't have analog movement or anything, but it used true line of sight and had amazing plastic terrain. So much plastic. Like, a whole lot. One the one hand, Hasbro says they're bringing HeroScape back, but on the other, ain't no way it's coming back the same as it was. ...and we're back. Six months is a long time, and it feels even longer in the dwindling days of a pandemic. Players One and Two have still been playing, still been talking, still been pushin' those cubes, but now they've turned the tape back on. It's easy to be dismissive of a gorgeous game about anthropomorphic animals building a delightfully adorable town, but is it a good game? Everdell didn't do much for us on the first few plays, finding itself relegated to the attic stock. Is a second look going to change things? Now with more Spirecrest! Everdell by James A. We sometimes don't understand the appeal of food-based games, friends and neighbours. To be sure, we adore Food Chain Magnate, but that is not parasitic upon our sincere appreciation of (say) lemonade and pizza. Jason is joined by Liz Davidson from Beyond Solitaire this week. We have some game reviews for you, and also make an announcement. Listen to find out! First up, Jason reviews the 18 card, tile laying mini-game from Leitman Games, Squire for Hire (10:40), comparing it to some very well known contemporaries like Sprawlopolis and Circle the Wagons. Does Squire for Hire stand with these other beloved games? We then follow up with three games from Weird Giraffe Games. First up is Fire in the Library (17:41), a quick, push your luck filler game. Then we have Stellar Leap (24:18), a family friendly euro game with a space theme and 4x flavor. Finally from Weird Giraffe, we have Dreams of Tomorrow (32:11), a tactical, small box worker placement game with gorgeous art. Rounding out the episode, we have two games from Starling Games, the cerebral head-to-head deduction game Anomaly (37:46), as well as Ascendant (44:09), the expansion to Archmage from last year. Zapraszamy do słuchania.
Jason was lucky enough to visit PAX Unplugged earlier this month, and is eager to share about his experiences! Like the last few PAX recaps, not only does Jason give his own perspective (this time as a demoer for Starling Games teaching Everdell to 36 different groups), but we also hear from a few friends. All of these voices should be very familiar to regular ENGN listeners - Liz Davidon, Michael Kelley, Jeremy Howard, Brenna Noonan, Mike Dilisio, and more! In additon, we also have previews from some big upcoming projects in 2020 - Frosthaven from Cephalophair Games, Return to Dark Tower from Restoration Games, and Final Girl from Van Ryder Games. Jason also shows Van Ryder double love with a quick review of Bees: The Secret Kingdom. We at ENGN hope that everyone is having a very happy and healthy holiday season! Host Tim Jennette (Metal Meeple), co-hosts Matt RoBear, Eric Ledford, and George Breden begin the show with first impressions for the board games: Everdell Pearlbrook expansion (Starling Games), Wreck Raiders (Kids Table BG), Freshwater Fly (Bellwether Games) Since these games all have something in common, they go through their Top 5 favorite water themed board games! Then they play through Hey Robot, a recently successful Kickstarter game where you must get Amazon's Alexa to say specific words... ...and much more! Other games and topics briefly discussed in this episode: Last Cloudia, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Slayer, Primus, Fallout Shelter, South Park board game parodies, Magic the Gathering

A hook, as per the dictionary definition, is something that draws you in. In games, a hook can be a number of different things. Often it is something visually exciting, such as beautiful illustrations, amazingly detailed miniatures, realistic resources or some sort of physical component that is integral to gameplay. Hooks can also be an interesting theme, an exciting gameplay mechanism or even the background story behind how a game was made. Certain awards or even the price of a game can be a hook too. Ultimately it's about finding something that grabs your attention and gets you to take a closer look. In this week's episode, we share a couple more interviews from our Excellent GenCon Adventure. But first, Tom shares a funny story from the world of obsessive gameplay and Pokemon GO. Turns out Myron’s crazy broken arm bike riding story isn’t the worst example of obsessive Pokemon GO gameplay, as a man in Washington was recently pulled over for playing on 8 phones while driving. The team discusses what goes wrong when people take their gaming to absurd and sometimes, dangerous, extremes. After the laughs from the realm of absurd gaming news, the team moves on to the GenCon interviews with Starling Games and Funko Games. Beginning with Brenna from Starling Games, we get an introduction to the beautiful world of Everdell and the new Pearlbrook expansion. Brenna gives an overview of the new worker types, citizens, resources and sideboard addition to the original game. Anna is intrigued to find out more about the new structures called Wonders which are like the Events from the original game, but are worth up to 25 points. Listen in to find out more about the exciting changes introduced with the Pearlbrook expansion. Next up is Stephanie with Funko Games to discuss the new Funkoverse Strategy Game that debuted at GenCon. JT was so excited for the blending of her Funko obsession with board gaming that she waited in long will-call lines to be one of the first to play the game (and of course bought most of the game sets). Stephanie walks us through how they selected the starting sets of Funko Pop! characters and what might be on the horizon for future releases. JT is quite excited to play a mashup between Harry Potter and Golden Girls characters, and Myron wants to make custom powers so he can play with Mad Moxxi and Hillary Clinton. With the huge arsenal of Funko Pop! characters available the possibilities seem endless. Remember to look for all episodes of our podcasts on iTunes, Stitcher, and TuneIn. After a brief paternity-induced hiatus, the Preview Series is back! We have a bit of an odd duck for you today. Jason wanted to cover the Nemo's War Kickstarter and generally catch up with Victory Point Games, so he reached out to see who would want to come on. After a while, all roads led to good friend of the show, Brenna Noonan with Game Salute. Brenna hops on the pod, not only to chat about the new Kickstarter for two mini-expansions for Nemo's War, but also three other projects that have launched under the Starling Games imprint - Archmage: Ascendant, Shadowrift: Boomtown, and King's Forge: Masterworks. All four of these projects are expansions with niche audiences, so we're happy to bring them to you. Check out if you want to hop on these evergreen titles.

PWe welcome back Brenna Noonan from Starling Games to talk about their newest 1 vs. many game, Anomaly, live on Kickstarter on October 21, 2018. This project was formerly called Ø: Fear Nothing. However, it struggled out of the gate, so Starling decided to pull the plug, repackage, offer a lower price point, and present the same game with a different name - Anomaly. Jason gives a bit of context for the campaign relaunch before presenting the episode. After the preamble, we present the former episode in its entirety. Where you hear the name "Ø: Fear Nothing", please translate that in your head as Anomaly. We get into where the (former) name came from and also how Anomaly distinguishes itself mechanically from similar 1 vs. Many games like Specter Ops. Anomaly probably has a bit too much interaction here to support solo play, but fans of high level, above the table cooperative play might be very interested in what it has to offer. Finally, somewhere in the episode, Jason gets on his soapbox and beseeches gamers everywhere to give companies a chance!
Zach and Sean discuss some recent plays including the children's RPG system Amazing Tales. We then give a full review of the Kickstarter game Everdell from Starling Games.
#BaordChitless Episode 47 - Don't Bring A Critter to a Fist Fight - We Play "Everdell" and "Street Masters" This week Tristan and Leki go head to head in what has to be one of the cutest and family friendly games known to man or creature alike. "Everdell" from Starling Games is a worker placement game set around the Ever Tree. Find out who will grow the most successful fur-based civilisation. Afterwards we go to to toe with some hench arcade villains and once again get beaten to a pulp playing Black List games' "Street Masters"; a co-operative brawler based around a fictional coin-op universe.
