In this week's episode of Castle Rock Radio, we took a look at one of the novellas from Stephen King's If It Bleeds: "The Life of Chuck." This sure would have made an excellent short story! It's a shame he stretched it out into a novella for some baffling reason. Also, why isn't this about a Jimmy Johns sandwich artist? Did somebody hack Max's brain? Check out our Bookshop.org page. Jack in to your fellow man! It's the 100th episode of Castle Rock Radio, baby, and to celebrate we're discussing Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace (aka Jobe's War). Is this any good? This week, we had a great time talking with Max Booth III, who has written Carnivorous Lunar Activities, The Nightly Disease, How to Successfully Kidnap Strangers to just name some of his books. In addition to writing, Max also runs Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and Dark Moon Digest with his partner Lori Michelle and hosts two podcasts, Castle Rock Radio and Ghoulish. Our conversation with Max was full of laughs and occasionally took a turn for the surreal. We talked to Max about his writing inspirations, how he teamed up with Fangoria for Carnivorous Lunar Activities, the origin story of PMMP, his upcoming Cemetery Dance novel Touch The Night, and a host of other topics. And yes, skunks AND Dick Spiders both make an appearance. This was an amazing conversation and one of the most fun episodes we've recorded. This is one episode you don't want to miss, trust me. Check out our conversation with Max now right here on Ink Heist or on your favorite streaming service. Support Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing on Patreon!
Lori Michelle is the other half of Perpetual Motion Machine, Dark Moon Digest, and Castle Rock Radio, so it's only natural for her to finally make an appearance on Ghoulish. Last night we spent 8 hours selling books at a Tim Burton-themed festival in downtown San Antonio, so today we sat around recapping the event, which included naked body painting, drunk costume contest hosts, and injuring myself while carrying several boxes of books. In this episode, we talk about the first two books in Katherine Arden's Winternight Trilogy: The Bear and the Nightingale and The Girl in the Tower. The third book, The Winter of the Witch, was out in January. We don't include that one in our discussion because we didn't want to risk spoiling anything with it being so new. Speaking of spoilers: we really did our best to keep this discussion as spoiler-free as possible. We do talk a lot about the themes (and we discuss a couple plot points without giving any significant details as to the "when" or the "how".) We really wanted to give you a conversation you can safely enjoy without having read the book—and without spoiling it in case you decide to. Here is the back-cover description of the first book: "Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. "Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring. And indeed, misfortune begins to stalk the village. "But Vasya’s stepmother only grows harsher, determined to remake the village to her liking and to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for marriage or a convent. As the village’s defenses weaken and evil from the forest creeps nearer, Vasilisa must call upon dangerous gifts she has long concealed—to protect her family from a threat sprung to life from her nurse’s most frightening tales." It's the 50th episode of Castle Rock Radio, baby! We're returning to our roots and discussing The Lawnmower Man again, only this time we're focusing on the extremely excellent film adaptation directed and co-written by Brett Leonard and starring Jeff Fahey and Pierce Brosnan. Why do scientists never anticipate test monkeys uprising? Did Brosnan's wife really leave him because he wouldn't take her to the city? Does this movie contain the grossest sex scene in cinema history? ALSO: Brett Leonard totally wrote his own Wikipedia page. We're on to you, dude. In this week's episode, we are introducing some new segments to the show, such as "What is the strangest thing you'e ever vomited?" and "What is the most amount of pain you've ever experienced?" In this special Nazi edition of Castle Rock Radio, we talk about Hitler's farting problems, why bullies need to exist, and wonder how this kid's parents are totally okay with him spending all of his free time in some old man's house. "Apt Pupil" is the second novella from Stephen King's Different Seasons, published in 1982. Bryan Singer adapted it into a film in 1998 starring Brad Renfro and Ian McKellen. Jay Wilburn (author of The Dead Song Legend series) joins us for the discussion. Would you stay in a guest house if someone told you giant toads might rain from the sky? How many toads could a freezer possibly hold, anyway? Also, is this really the story that cured King's writer's block after finishing The Tommyknockers? On yet another brilliant episode of Arm Cast: Dead Sexy Podcast, host Armand Rosamilia is joined by two great guests for the price of one. Max Booth III is the editor-in-chief of Perpetual Motion Machine, the managing editor of Dark Moon Digest, and a columnist for LitReactor. He hosts the podcasts Castle Rock Radio and The Taco Summit. He’s the author of several novels, the latest being THE NIGHTLY DISEASE. Lori Michelle is the brains behind all of the above. Seriously. Without her Max is asking if you'd like fries with that. This week is sponsored by Subculture Corsets & Clothing
On today's episode we are taking a break from Stephen King and looking at what his son Joe Hill has been up to with his new collection, Strange Weather. Specifically, the novella found inside it called "Loaded". There is...uh, a lot of child death in it. We have fun here at Castle Rock Radio, and we hope you do, too. We convinced Lori's 9-year-old son to help us create the most adorable advert known to man. We're using it on a few other podcasts to spread the good word about Castle Rock Radio and our horror magazine, Dark Moon Digest, but we thought y'all would also be interested in hearing such major cuteness. Don't say we didn't warn you. You're gonna say "awww".
Could Dorito dust mutate your fingers into tiny eyeballs? Possibly! Let's find out in the latest episode of Castle Rock Radio. We're talking about King's "I Am the Doorway" from 1978's Night Shift with special guest Andrew Hilbert (author of Invasion of the Weirdos). Featured topics include leprosy and how to eat sloppy joes with hook hands. Oh, and we're super disappointed with that Dark Tower trailer, but that won't stop us from actually watching the movie. Probably.
