Max and I talk about his experience running a small press, his real-life encounters with uniquely Texan horrors, and his process for adapting the novella We Need to Do Something for film. Scanlines by Todd Keisling is a very dark novella from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Terrifying, especially to those who have tumbled down the wrong rabbit holes online, late at night, or when you were too young. "We were ghouls in a graveyard, digging up a dead man's grave for closure. We never considered he might want to stay buried." From the back cover: "...No one has ever seen the supposed Duncan Tape, presumably because it doesn't exist. It's a ghost story perpetuated on the forums and chat rooms of the internet, another handful of bytes scattered across the Information Superhighway at blistering 56K modem speeds. For Robby and his friends, an urban legend is the last thing on their minds when a boring Friday night presents a chance to download porn. But the short clip they watch turns out to be something far more graphic and disturbing, and in the coming days, they'll learn even the most outlandish urban legends possess a shred of truth..." Standalone by Paul Michael Anderson is the latest effort from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing, and it brings us a sci-fi and script-flipping twist on your classic slasher story. It's a fun romp, a complicated concept, and a good time.
This week we're excited to welcome Paul Michael Anderson to the show to discuss his latest novella, Standalone, which is out now through Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. If you're a fan of the Slasher genre, Standalone should be on your radar and it's an essential addition to your library. It's an inventive and genre-bending take on the genre that utilizes traditional tropes but warps them in fun ways that you definitely won't see coming and makes for one of the most fun reads of 2020. Trust us when we say you should order a copy without thinking twice. It's that good. Throughout the course of the episode, we talked about STANDALONE, being blurbed by Jack Ketchum, Taylor Swift mash-ups and a lot of other stuff you don't wanna miss! We had a blast with this episode and we think you will too. After you listen, be sure to check out Paul's story "Everything Feels Wrong Without You", which is set in the same universe as Standalone.
This week on Bizzong! Mr. Frank is joined by guest author Paul Michael Anderson to discuss his newest release from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing, STANDALONE. This week, we're excited to welcome Max Booth III and Lori Michelle of Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing to the show! Max and Lori are almost superhuman in the amount of projects they take on in indie publishing from running Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and their fiction magazine Dark Moon Digest to doing their own writing, podcasting, formatting books, and so much more. It was a lot of fun to hang out with them and talk about their various projects and some of the behind the scenes editorial stuff at Perpetual Motion Machine. Max and Lori have consistently put out some of the best and most original dark fiction in the genre today and if you haven't picked up one of their books yet, well, what are you waiting for? During the course of the episode, we discuss Hannibal, Lori's background in publishing, their editorial process together at PMMP, Lost Contacts, how they acquire books, Paul Michael Anderson's Standalone, the inspiration for We Need To Do Something, Night Frights, upcoming projects, Max breaks down ejaculation terms, interviewing Joe Lansdale, favorite podcasts and so much more.
This week, we're excited to welcome Michael David Wilson to the show to celebrate the release of his brand new debut novella The Girl in the Video which is out now through Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Chances are if you're a fan of horror fiction, you're already well aware of Michael as he is the founder of the website and podcast This Is Horror, which has run for 350 episodes and counting and features him and Bob Pastorella interviewing some of the biggest names in the genre. It's a great podcast and one of the biggest influences on our show and if you aren't already a listener, head over and dive into some of their previous episodes. The Girl in the Video is a terrifying story that Michael has pitched as "The Ring meets Fatal Attraction for the iPhone generation", and I don't think there is a better description for it. Without delving into spoilers, I will say that Michael taps into isolation and the fears about our digital privacy to craft a pretty gripping premise that might make you want to delete all of your social media profiles. If you haven't checked it out, definitely pick up a copy. During the course of the episode, we discuss the beginnings of the This Is Horror Podcast, dealing with anxiety, interview styles, profanity, discussing ejaculation with Max Booth III, the origins of The Girl in the Video, negative reviews, a possible The Girl in the Video film, dealing with the pandemic, isolation and technology as themes, The House of Bad Memories, favorite Peep Show scenes, Peeper Ritual, Bob Pastorella being his prizefighter, what he's into lately, and so much more.

This week, we had a great time talking with Max Booth III, who has written Carnivorous Lunar Activities, The Nightly Disease, How to Successfully Kidnap Strangers to just name some of his books. In addition to writing, Max also runs Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and Dark Moon Digest with his partner Lori Michelle and hosts two podcasts, Castle Rock Radio and Ghoulish. Our conversation with Max was full of laughs and occasionally took a turn for the surreal. We talked to Max about his writing inspirations, how he teamed up with Fangoria for Carnivorous Lunar Activities, the origin story of PMMP, his upcoming Cemetery Dance novel Touch The Night, and a host of other topics. And yes, skunks AND Dick Spiders both make an appearance. This was an amazing conversation and one of the most fun episodes we've recorded. This is one episode you don't want to miss, trust me. EPISODE 109: KATRINA WEIDMAN Katrina Weidman, co-host of Destination America’s Paranormal Lockdown, returns to hang out with horror author T. Fox Dunham on episode 109 of What Are You Afraid Of? Horror & Paranormal Show. Katrina is a good friend to the show, and she returns to talk about season 3 of Paranormal Lockdown. Kat shares insights about her investigations and tells the creepy tale of several paranormal encounters she had while filming at some of England’s most haunted sites including the Beattie Mansion, Shepton Mallet Prison, Cambria Jail and the Drakelow tunnels. Included in her stories is the tale of phantom knocking, shadow figures, a frightening spirit she calls “The Creeper” and the story of a condemned woman named Cassandra who was terrified of death. The season finale of Paranormal Lockdown airs this Tuesday, February 5th on Destination America. Also, because it’s Fox’s birthday on Saturday Feb 2nd, he reads an excerpt from his novel, Destroying the Tangible Illusion of Reality or Searching for Andy Kaufman, his book about life, freedom from fear, cancer, the real America and the road-trip of three strange friends as they seek out the legendary song-and-dance man, Andy Kaufman, published by Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Is Death the Inevitable? In the third grade, a teacher told Kat she would never amount to anything. Ha! She’s from the Bucks County area, and her life changed when she dropped off a friend at Pennsylvania State University. She then transferred to Penn State and joined the world-renowned Paranormal Research Society, training and working as their case manager. She co-hosted A&E’s hit docu-drama “Paranormal State” from 2007 to 2011, which chronicled the work of the PRS. Kat then became the host for Chiller’s “Real Fear: The Truth Behind the Movies,” which explores the real life terror behind some of the world’s most iconic horror films and hosted the follow-up special, “Real Fear: The Truth Behind More Movies.” Now she co-hosts the show Paranormal Lockdown which is playing its third season for Destination America. It’s a show that follows her and Nick Groff as they live in some notoriously haunted sites for 72 hours. Welcome back class, it has been a long summer and the crops have not been particularly bountiful. What are we to do? Burn a big ass wicker man of course! Specifically we are going to be talking about the 1973 Folk Horror classic The Wicker Man. Not to be confused with the absolutley horrible Nick Cage remake. First we talk about our favorite new movies and books, then we get into Folk Horror. What is it? Why does it only seem to work in the old country? Why did the Nick Cage movie suck so bad? Show Notes: 02:30- Tyler just finished watching Extinction on Netflix and the final grade is: "Well, its pretty good." Netflix has had a bunch of scifi bombs as of late, so at least this is an improvement. 03:15- Tyler and Mike both have copies of The Best Horror of the Year Volume 10 edited by Ellen Datlow. Tyler talks about some of his favorite picks from this year's volume. Its awesome, as usual. 06:00- Mike just finished reading and reviewing Lost Films, a short story anthology from Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing. Go check out his review and then pre-order a copy, both Tyler and Mike think it is awesome. Best themed anthology so far this year! 08:00- Mike is currently reading Lost Highways, which you can pick up on Kindle Unlimited. Review will be up soon, but while you are over at Kindle Unlimited check out some of our best horror picks. 10:00- LaVar Burton Reads podcast did an episode featuring Rebecca Roanhorse's short story, "Welcome to your Authentic Indian Experience." It is wonderful and you need to listen to it. BEES!! 13:00- Want to watch the 1973 folk horror classic The Wicker Man? Head on over to Shudder.com and use the promo code "Signal" for some extra time on your free trial. 16:00- Much of what Mike talks about comes from a great new book that just came out on Kindle Unlimited, We Don't Go Back: A Watcher's Guide to Folk Horror. Author Howard David Ingham did a successful Kickstarter a while back for the book and it is totally awesome! Looking forward to more of his work as he has more of these type of books planned for the future. 19:00- Tyler and Mike try to figure out why Folk Horror doesn't quite work in the United States. Both Sleepy Hollow and The VVitch kind of fit. 27:00- Watch out. There is a ton of nudity in this movie. Like way more than you would expect. 40:00- Tyler drops the phrase "Aboriginal Orientalism" to describe the way we Americans sometimes look at Native American culture and spirtuality. 41:30- Tyler talks about a great article from Mikil J. Koven entitled "The Folklore Fallacy: A Folkloric/Filmic Perspective on The Wicker Man." 50:00- Musical Theater meets Charlie Manson. Good way to describe this one.
