Welcome back to The Round Table! This week, our hosts Kassandra, Sauda, and Viola sit down with Christopher Albert De La Roa, Web Producer and Content Manager at DoSomething.org. Christopher shares his personal background in art and activism as an independent broadcaster, media and content producer, storyteller, and self proclaimed “student of the absurd.”Reflecting on his upbringing, witnessing injustice and facing family struggles Christopher discusses how he found both escape and empowerment through art. He shares his take on the evolving role of social media as a “double-edged sword,” offering thoughtful advice on how to navigate content creation and consumption. He also highlights the artists who have broken through societal barriers to bring forward stories that reflect the experiences of often overlooked communities.Together, the group dives into media films, books, and more that portray marginalized groups with care, as well as those that miss the mark. Christopher emphasizes the importance not just of which stories get told, but who gets to tell them, and how that shapes the broader cultural narrative. The conversation rounds out with a powerful discussion on the role of humor in healing, the impact of activism on education and careers, and the need to move beyond fear, seek support, and speak your truth. Listen in to find out why that matters and how to begin.

Walk Boldly With Jesus
Witness Wednesday #155 More Popwe Stories (Broken Chapters)

Walk Boldly With Jesus

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 16, 2025 8:17

Today's witnesses are from Matthew West's website called popwe.org. If you don't know who Matthew West is, he is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. This website is for the non-profit that he has with his father, a pastor. Matthew and his father encourage people to share their stories. They have various categories of stories. Today, I chose three testimonies from the Broken Chapter Category. We all have times in our lives when things don't go as we thought they would. I think we have all had tragedy strike in one way or another. Some are worse than others but I don't think anyone has had a tragedy-free life. The witnesses today are no different. They have had some truly terrible things happen and yet they are able to testify to how God was with them through it. Often, we can hear our own story in someone else's story. When we listen to others tell their story, it helps us see that we are not alone. When we hear how God worked in their situation, it gives us hope that He will work in ours, too! I pray when you hear these testimonies, you get the faith and hope to believe that miracles can happen in your situation also. I pray you know that God is there with you, and if you invite Him into your situation, He can help.April: I was saved when I was 10 years old. There have been times in my life when I was walking closer to Jesus and times when I have drifted from Him.I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm ashamed of and I have a lot of regrets. I've felt that God has punished me for my sins, especially on the night of September 24, 2021.My oldest son Cole was killed by a drunk driver. Nothing “bad” ever happened to my family and this was totally unexpected. My husband and I were doing everything “right”, raising our kids in church and feeling like we were leading them in the way they should go.When Cole was killed, it was and is still the worst pain I've ever experienced. I felt it was my fault. I felt God was punishing me for all the shameful things I've done. I still struggle with this.I know Cole is with Jesus because God shows me and tells me all the time that Cole is with Him. He does this in many different ways. I've learned to be looking for Him and listening to His voice, because if I don't I start to believe the lies of the enemy.I know that what happened to Cole isn't my fault because Jesus took my punishment for me when He died on the cross. I've asked God so many times “why did you let this happen? “Why did it have to be my Cole?” “Why not me?” Well, the answer is that as Christians, we're not called to understand why. We're called to trust. I choose this every day.My faith has grown stronger since Cole went to Heaven. I have more joy in my heart than I had before. I know that sounds weird and I do wish that my Cole was still here with me, but I know that given the choice to come back here, Cole would say “no.” It gives me joy knowing that Cole is with Jesus and that one day I will be there too.I am working on forgiveness, forgiveness for the man who killed Cole. I don't want to live in a cage of anger, so I have to choose forgiveness. It hasn't been asked of me by this man, but it has been required of me by God. “Father forgives them, for they know not what they do.” Please pray for me to forgive as my Father forgives me.Many times, when I'm driving down the road I will be crying and feeling sorry for myself and then “Don't Stop Praying “will come on the radio. This is not a coincidence; it's God telling me to keep trusting in Him and to continue to bring everything to Him and lay it at His feet. He goes before me. If He is for me, who can be against me?Thank you, Matthew, for being obedient to what the Lord calls you to do. Your songs are reaching many people for Jesus and giving Him all the glory. Robin: My entire life is one broken mess after another. I grew up abused and broken and then I married someone who left me even more broken. I have struggled with depression and anxiety and often thought that the world would be better off without me. And so would my kids. I never wanted them to walk away even a little broken; if I was not there, I couldn't hurt them. I was on the edge and ready to break and I just stopped and gave in. For years people tried to lead me to God and all his promises and I would not, could not believe them, no one had ever kept a promise before and God doesn't have time for this broken-down sinner. I looked at my aunt and sister-in-law and saw the peace and love I longed for. So I gave in. I listened. I prayed for really the first meaningful way. Then I understood. I am not broken, just cracked but I was still whole. I picked myself up and God led the way to my next chapter. I am still cracked and I always will be, but now I know I will not fall apart. Wendy: When I was 17 yrs old, I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life so I took a year off from college to volunteer while I figured it out. I found a mission organization out of San Diego called Amor Ministries that takes youth groups into Tijuana, Mexico to build homes for families there. I found what I wanted to do for life there!! It's my favorite thing to do. I volunteered for years. Even when I went back to college, I took time off to go every year. After I got married, my husband came with me a couple of years, but we were broke and he only got a week's vacation each year, so I had to stop for a few years. It was heartbreaking for me to not go to help during their busiest seasons. Then after I had our second girl, I had a disc in my back burst and it was pinching a nerve to my left leg, so I was losing the ability to lift my foot. I thank God to this day for the spinal surgeon that was able to remove the disc from my spinal canal. Those years after the surgery were depressing as the pain wore on and I was sure I would never get to go back to Mexico again. BUT God!! When my girls were 2 and 3 yrs old I was finally able to start going back to volunteer again. My husband and parents took care of the kids every year so that I have never missed a year again except for when Covid closed the borders. This last year I was honored by the organization and given a staff shirt for all my years of volunteering. I started taking both my girls with me to volunteer about 8 yrs ago as well. I leave in March for my 30th year volunteering! Your song “Do Something” is my anthem for life.Thank you all for sharing your testimonies. When we share how God is working in our lives it helps others. It is not easy to be vulnerable and share about a time when things were so hard. We appreciate you opening up and sharing you struggles. The worst thing that's ever happened to the Democrats is democracy. It must be quite an existential crisis that, after all that, the rest of the country rejected their opinion of Donald Trump. That the guy they said was a rapist, a racist, a fascist, a dictator, a Nazi, a bigot, a transphobe, a misogynist, a Russian asset, a criminal, a felon, a fraudster, a fake, a traitor, an election denier and insurrectionist, an extremist, a terrorist, a white supremacist, a phony that they impeached twice and indicted four times, and became the first presidential candidate with a mug shot, and to be convicted of a felony still won the popular vote. That has got to really burn. But it isn't the Trump side that is now in a perpetual state of shock because it existed inside a utopian bubble, cutting itself off from the rest of America. It isn't the Trump side that cosplayed World War II for so long that it lost touch with reality about either our world now or what really happened in World War II. It isn't the Trump side that was the empire.Their war-torn resistance fighters were so disgusted that none of the Democrats had done enough to “stop Hitler Trump and his Nazi leader, Elon Musk,” that their approval numbers were at historic lows. DO SOMETHING, their supporters cried. So Cory Booker took to the Senate floor to remind them of what they still stand for. And to rally the troops. He prepared in advance for the performance of his life. He denied himself food and water to go the distance. It was, for him, a chance to audition for the part of Charismatic Leader, the democrats so desperately need.Booker found a way: It's not Left or Right but right or WRONG.It's a far cry from Obama's “not red states or blue states, but the United States.” The Democrats no longer believe that. They went from “don't normalize Trump and his supporters” to it's more than justified to demonize, dehumanize, even terrorize them. They are “bad people.” They're no longer welcome. Not in our culture, restaurants, movie theaters, family gatherings, and, most of all, our democracy.Their anger stems from their class privilege of having everything they need, yet they can't accept losing something they want. Here is Batya Ungar-Sargon:Either the Democrats really are caught up in a mass delusion about who Trump is and why he won, or else they're the drama club, and none of it was ever real.Splendor in the GrassI wasn't just in the Drama Club in high school. I was the undisputed queen. Just ask anyone who went to high school with me. I was a terrible student. I barely graduated. My nickname was “no-show Stone,” but the one thing I showed up for was the Drama Club. That's me as Elizabeth Proctor in the high school production of The Crucible. In case you've never seen or read The Crucible, Elizabeth Proctor was John Proctor's pregnant wife who was accused of witchcraft but who was spared because of the presumed innocence of her baby. Her husband, John Proctor, would be hanged.I could never have known that all of these decades later, we'd all be living in a Salem of our own making, and I'd be once again an accused and condemned witch.Inside the drama club, I had a magic mirror - a small group of people who thought I hung the moon. My Drama teacher thought that too. I was his favorite, at least for a time. I didn't know the word “grooming” back then, but looking back on it, I see that's probably what he was doing—a pinch here, a grope there. On the last day of my junior year, he French kissed me just before I went away for summer break. That Summer, he drove up to my house and dropped off a copy of the play Splendor in the Grass. I took that to mean I would be cast as the lead, the part Natalie Wood played in the movie. As the queen of the Drama Club, I got all of the leading roles. Of course, I would play Deannie. But when it came time to cast the play, the part went to someone who wasn't even in the drama club. She was the prettiest girl in school: the Head Cheerleader and the Homecoming Queen. Our teacher had broken the silent code of the drama club - nobody from the outside is allowed in. Because if they do, our fantasy world is shattered. That's all we had. We weren't the popular kids, the cheerleaders, the jocks, the science nerds. We were people who didn't belong anywhere else. But we also liked escaping into a fantasy world of being another person other than ourselves.During the Me Too movement, my friends would always bring up our drama teacher, but honestly, I was more angry that he'd given my part away to a prettier girl.In reality, the Homecoming Queen was the right person to play Deannie, even if our teacher probably just had the hots for her. She was good, too—better than I would have been. Because she was popular, everyone in the school came to see the play.We were all big fish in a small pond, which gave us power we weren't willing to relinquish. But having the whole school see our play meant reality was here, whether we liked it or not.I often think about the drama club now when I watch Christopher Guest's hilarious Waiting for Guffman, which is about a self-important director of a small town theater group and their delusions of grandeur. And that's also what I see when I look at the democrats and all of the performative protesters and activists on the Left, from Eric Swalwell to AOC to Jasmine Crocket to Chuck Schumer to Cory Booker, to all of these delusional people who believe Musk did the Nazi salute and Trump is Hitler. They are Waiting for Guffman. They are the drama club. It's a cosplay fantasy, a dystopian Renaissance Faire. None of it is real. The American people have been watching this performative outrage for almost a decade. They wanted to turn the channel so badly they voted for Donald Trump a second time, and now, here they all are, once again, caterwauling about the very democracy that just took them out of power. They still believe that doing exactly the same thing for this long will get them a different result, the very definition of insanity. But there's a darkness too, a rising violence. What they all mean when they say “Hands off” is not just “hands off” our government, but “hands off” everything else too.Along with keying Teslas and violent outbursts against Trump supporters, there is a hashtag making the rounds on TikTok called “when it happens,” where users fantasize about Trump's death.Identity First vs. America First.During the last Civil War, the two conflicting realities were that a country founded on freedom could not own human beings vs. the false reality that slaves could not survive as free human beings and that there would be chaos and collapse if things changed. Now, we find ourselves once again at a crossroads with two factions believing in two completely separate realities. This time, it's not about westward expansion but rather our migration onto the new frontier of the internet, AI, and the upcoming robot revolution. What will this country be going forward? What will be our values? What will define male and female? What will decide power? You can see each of our potential futures laid out before us. Whole generations have come of age in virtual reality, where they can choose their own avatars and have their own audiences for their own show. It's all performative. But to be included, you must follow the rules. If you don't, out you go. This is a public episode. Send us a textNot so long ago, the attitude was that "it can't happen here". This is the United States of America! The beacon for Democracies world wide! The greatest nation ever conceived! American exceptionalism! Well, in two short months, we now know that indeed it CAN happen here...it HAS happened here. Now, there are signs that perhaps a sleeping giant of sorts has been awakened due to the assault on our institutions and people are waking up. It would be wise for those who consider themselves our "Rulers" to take note that the historical reaction to despotic authoritarian rule and the often violent end that many of those historical "Rulers" met can also "happen here". Across the nation and world, reactions are growing louder and more pointed. We share some of the sounds of this reaction on this edition of Minyard & Minyard do the resistance. AT Parenting Survival Podcast: Parenting | Child Anxiety | Child OCD | Kids & Family

OCD can convince our kids that they have control over the uncontrollable. That is at the heart of magical thinking OCD compulsions. Magical thinking is when OCD convinces a person that if they do or don't do something - they can prevent something from happening. That something could be literally anything related to their theme. They might be preventing themselves from throwing up. They might be saving your life. They might be preventing a health issue. It is different for each person, but the compulsion is the same - do this (or don't do this) or ELSE.In this week's AT Parenting Survival Podcast I'm exploring how magical thinking shows up in OCD and how you can help your kids overcome it.YouTube videos discussed in episode:When OCD Tells You to Do Something or Something Bad Will HappenOffense and Defense for OCD

Woah--Stop scrolling! This is a MUST-LISTEN to episode today with one of the most successful, innovative, crafty, and wisest entrepreneurs of our modern time. Meet Jeff Fenster. Jeff is a serial entrepreneur who has started and sold several different companies in his career, and he's still only in his 40's. This includes his latest entrepreneurial initiatives with both EVERBOWL and WeBuild, and what he's doing with those companies to drive impact. In this powerful episode of the IMPACT SHOW, I sat down with Jeff live, in-studio as he shared his secrets to success and we dove deep into the mindset, processes, and strategies that have helped him achieve extraordinary results in both business and life. Whether you're an entrepreneur, athlete, or simply someone looking for deep personal and business growth, Jeff's journey and lessons are a goldmine. Here are some of the specific things we discussed on today's epic IMPACT SHOW podcast episode: What's the best piece of advice you ever received? Jeff's shares his “5-Step Formula for Success & Legacy.” A few of Jeff's top entrepreneurial lessons, including how he started EVERBOWL and WeBuild. What is “Kaizen” and why is it important in entrepreneurship & success. The Power of “Relationship Capital.” The Mindset of Winners. It is here that Jeff shares his perspective on success and how he stays focused on the process. Using the example of Roger Federer, who won 85% of his matches despite only winning 55% of individual points, Jeff emphasizes that the process is what drives true success. Speaking and podcasting. What does he love about both of them. Jeff talks about the balancing act of Family & Entrepreneurship. Jeff describes “Legacy & Impact” and how he will achieve both. This one will go down for the ages. There is so much wisdom in here that it would typically only be found in an MBA course at a Top-10 B-School. Haha. Sometimes it gets hard to say the right words.By kittybeaver, in 5 parts. Listen to the ► Podcast at Explicit Novels. Dirk's biceps flexed and contracted as his arm moved in long strokes up and down the front of his pants. Tina tried to be shocked and appalled by his actions, but the part of her that controlled lower brain functions found it mesmerizing."What are you doing?""Switching on video recording," Fact-Tel said. "I'm sure we'll want this for the archives.""I was able to identify General Zero," Dirk said, his arm keeping its slow, steady pace "and follow him--""Dirk. Dirk!" she interrupted. "Why are you, " The shadows shifted on the front of his pants as a shape began to emerge, the shape of something large and thick. Tina licked her lips. "Why are you touching yourself?""It's a long story. I don't want to get into it.""I think you have to."He looked up at the ceiling and took a deep breath. "I told you about my dad, right?""Yes," Tina said. "He's a magician.""A wizard," Dirk corrected, "and for reasons that are unimportant, he put a spell on me so I can't talk unless I have a hard-on."She took a moment to absorb the information. "And I thought your relationship with your mother was weird.""I should probably be in therapy," he agreed, his hand still down the front of his pants. "Back to my report. I followed General Zero from the nightclub down to the docks, where he met with a short man in a parka and then, Tina you're drooling.""Oh, sorry." She wiped the back of her hand across her chin. "Remind me again what your mission was. I'm drawing a blank.""Is it because I'm jerking off?" he asked. She nodded. "It's a little, a little, actually it's a good size." She tore her eyes away from his pelvis. "Maybe you can write out your report.""Okay," Dirk said. "I need a pen and a piece of paper.""Wash your hands first," Fact-Tel said. It made no attempt to hide the disdain in its machine generated voice.By the time Dirk's hands were clean, Tina had placed a pen and notebook on her desk and pulled out her chair for him to sit."It's much easier to think when you're not, you know, doing that," she said.He only nodded and silently began to write. It took several minutes for him to fill up the page, but once he was done he handed her the notebook and sat back, his arms crossed in front of his chest."Your handwriting is atrocious." Tina scanned the page. "What does this say? Tiger print motif?" She tossed the notebook back on the desk. "I can't read this. We're going to have to add penmanship to your training. In the meantime, use the computer and type your report.""Did you clean underneath your fingernails?" Fact-Tel asked."Never mind that," Tina said. "We'll disinfect later, just type."If only it was that simple. Dirk's skill set as a male-model didn't include touch typing. He pecked at the keyboard with his middle fingers. Laboriously, one letter at a time, the words began to form. Tina paced the floor behind him, drumming her fingers on her thighs. So little was known about General Zero. They didn't even have a good description of him. If Dirk's report was thorough enough, they'd finally be able to fit together the pieces of what was undoubtedly an evil plot. Only then would they be able to formulate their own plan to stop it.She was peering over his shoulder to see how far he'd gotten, when he started to hit the backspace button."No," she gasped. "Don't do that."Dirk rocked back and forth, grinding his crotch against the desk leg for a minute before saying, "I misspelled corduroy."That morning if someone had said to Tina, 'Tonight you're going to rip open your blouse and shove your coworker's face into your cleavage,' she would have laughed at their preposterous prediction. Now, in a moment of desperation, she did just that."Does this help?" she asked while she pushed Dirk's nose between her breasts."A ribble bi," he responded, his voice muffled by her bountiful flesh. She pushed his head back to prevent suffocation. "Keep your eyes on these." She pointed to her boobs, certain that Dirk would be able to make out her nipples through her lacy black bra. "Fact-Tel, record audio and disable video," she called to the AI. "I repeat, disable video.""Fine," Fact-Tel intoned. "Whatever. It's not like I get off on this sort of stuff."Tina ignored the Artificial Intelligence and studied Dirk for a moment. "Are you going to be able to continue with your debriefing?""I guess," he said. His words were slow and not well articulated."How about now?" She started to bounce up and down on her toes. It was a subtle movement, but it was enough to send her breasts jiggling."Yes." His voice was strong and clear. "That is, very effective.""Good." Tina continued to bounce. "Let's start with a description of General Zero."Dirk happily obliged. "He's about 5'6" and approximately 165 lbs.""What about facial features?" she asked. "Were there any identifying scars or tattoos?""Not that I saw?""How about hair and eye color?""Nah." His words were starting to slur. "He wore a hoodie and mirrored sunglaffies."Tina lifted higher on her toes and dropped faster, causing her breast to bounce more. "What about skin color?""It was dark in the club." Dirk regained his enunciation. "The flashing lights made it hard to tell. Honestly, I'm not certain General Zero is a man."Tina tried to nod her understanding, but it got lost in the bounces. "Until further notice Zero's pronouns will be 'they,' 'their' and 'them.'"I followed Zero down to the docks," Dirk continued, "where they met with a short man in a parka. I know he was a man because of the unkempt facial hair and tacky fedora.""It's midsummer," she said, thinking out loud. "Why was he wearing a parka?""I ohn't gnow."Without putting much thought into it, Tina began to bounce even harder, but by this time her movements were so violent Dirk actually pushed his chair back and put his hands up to protect his face."Fine, fine." She stopped bouncing and spoke in a calming voice. "We'll try something else." Then she reached behind her back and undid the clasp on her bra. The straps slid off her shoulders and the bra fell to the floor, leaving Tina quite topless. She could feel her nipples harden as an air-conditioned breeze brushed passed them. "Did Zero and the parka man do anything other than talk?"Dirk tilted his head from one side to the other and a dreamy smile spread across his face. "Yeah. Crates were being offloaded from a ship onto a truck. Parka man opened one of the crates for Zero to inspect."Tina placed her hand on the desk and leaned forward. "Now we're getting somewhere.""We certainly are," Dirk sighed. "Can I touch them?"She rolled her eyes. "Keep it professional, Agent Allen.""Sorry." He sat up straight and clenched his hands into fists in his lap."Were you able to ascertain what was in the crates?""Esh, des amps"Tina rolled her eyes again, then she grabbed Dirk's hands and not so gently placed them against her breasts. The weight of Tina's breasts settled nicely onto Dirk's palms. There was something so pure about squeezing her soft, warm flesh. It was calming, yet stimulating. It sent him right to his happy place and definitely helped him pop a chub."The crates," she said."Right." Dirk said, his words mumbled more from shame than anything else.He was ricocheting back and forth between euphoria and embarrassment. If he didn't have to think about why he was cupping Tina's boobs, then he could really enjoy it. Yet, when he thought about what his father had done to him, how ashamed and infuriated he felt, well, it was enough to squash any man's pocket rocket. Still, he was an agent-in-training and he had a duty."Desk lamps," he said. "There were desk lamps in the crates. High quality, I think. There were tiger stripes on the lamp shades."She straightened her back slightly, forcing Dirk to extend his arms a couple inches so he could keep hold of the goods. "You really did write Tiger Print Motif?"He nodded. "I'm working on making my vocabulary, you know, ""Bigger?""That's it.""But why the lamps?" Tina shifted her weight from one hip to the other. "And why the man in the parka?""Can you stop squirming so much?" Dirk asked. "It's hard for me to cop a feel."She gave him one of her disapproving stares that made him shrivel inside. "I can't think if I have to hold still. I need to pace back and forth to figure this thing out." She took a step back, pulling away from his grasp. "It's better if you stay quiet for right now."Dirk's hands felt cold and empty, but at least he still had a nice view. Tina hadn't remembered to put her blouse back on and she was wearing a pair of finely tailored black pants. They hugged her thighs and stretched across her plump ass. The farther she moved away from him, the more of her he could take in at once."We don't know much about General Zero," she was saying as she moved across the floor in her knee high boots, "just that they're raising funds for some dastardly plan."His eyes traced the curve of her spine, from her shoulder blades down to the dimples peeking out of her trousers' waistband. Dirk appreciated the slope of her hips and the radiance of her pale skin. He found himself nodding in agreement to every step she took, as if her very movement was a statement of fact that couldn't be denied."The question is, are the lamps part of the financing or part of the plan?" She pivoted on her heels and was suddenly facing him again. He didn't mind. Her front side was just as entertaining as her back."It depends," he said as his eyes happily traced a triangle between her nipples and her bellybutton, "on what they're smuggling in the lamps.""What?" She stopped walking. "You can still talk?"It occurred to Dirk that a professional secret agent would not objectify his partner's body while she was trying to unravel a nefarious plan. He would, instead, look up statistics and make calculations in order to help solve the puzzle. The fact that Dirk was still pitching a tent made it obvious he wasn't being professional."I'm sawffy," he tried to say. The shame of his perversion was already softening his resolve."No. No." In three quick steps Tina was across the room, leaning over him and vigorously rubbing his groin. "There was something in the lamps?""Oh God." His eyes drifted shut as he sunk down in his chair."Finish the thought, Dirk," Tina commanded. "There was something in the lamps.""Maybe," he moaned. "Zero looked inside one. Why else would they do that unless, Oh yeah, Baby, you're so beautiful." If only she would unzip his fly and free him. He longed to feel skin to skin contact."Did they only look inside the lamp" she asked, her arm keeping a consistent pace, "or did they do more, like sniff it?""They touched it," he said, "then rubbed their fingers together." The pressure was building in his throbbing Johnson. His balls ached. Dirk needed release. There, in front of him, were Tina's naked breasts. They would look so good with a pearl necklace. "Squeeze me tighter. Bring me home.""No." Tina's gripped noticeably loosened. "You can't climax. Once you ejaculate you won't be able to speak again for 20 minutes to an hour.""It wouldn't be that long," Dirk protested. "Five minutes top. Please. If I don't cum soon it's going to be a medical situation.""Look at me."He did as he was told. Tina's golden-brown eyes could be cold and ruthless, but right then they held an endless supply of compassion."You're my partner," she continued. "We look out for each other. I would never leave you hanging. Do you trust me?"

New Year's is a natural time to look ahead. To ask, “What is God up to?” and “What might He want to accomplish this year?” These are big, powerful questions that can sometimes overwhelm us with their significance. We want to align our activity this year with God's plans, but how do we know for sure what those plans are? How do we know where God is leading us? How do we know what to do? The enormity of these questions can be paralyzing, keeping us from doing anything at all! Fortunately, several passages in Scripture provide clarity and insight about how to discern God's will and how to act on what we discern. 2025 is not a year to sit motionless in fear. It's a year to stand up, get started, and DO SOMETHING for the love of God.If you are interested in attending a service or finding out more, please visit us at https://mvcchome.org/If you feel led to support this ministry, then follow this link.  https://mvcchome.org/give

Send me any questions hereJoshua Coombs, founder of Do Something for Nothing, shares his journey of giving haircuts to the homeless and the impact it has had on his life and the lives of others. He started this work out of a feeling of helplessness and a desire to do something to make a difference. Through his interactions with the homeless, he realized the importance of showing up, listening, and treating people with dignity and respect. His work gained attention on social media, leading to a movement of people wanting to do something for nothing. Joshua emphasizes the power of small acts of kindness and encourages individuals to step out of their comfort zones and connect with those in need. He also discusses the misconceptions and stigmas surrounding homelessness and the need for collective action to address the issue. The conversation explores the importance of collective action and compassion in addressing social issues like homelessness. It emphasizes the need for a national effort and a shift in consciousness to prioritize helping those in need. The conversation also touches on the importance of listening, letting go of preconceived opinions, and connecting with others on a deeper level. It suggests that finding purpose and authenticity in life involves being open to new experiences, getting out of one's comfort zone, and quieting the mind through practices like meditation. The purpose of life is seen as being the best version of oneself and connecting to one's authenticity. Support the show

To find the weirdest, most offbeat films to analyze and discuss.  Angel's choice is "We Need to Do Something," a 2021 psychological, claustrophobic horror thriller about a dysfunctional family trapped in their bathroom during a fierce storm. Mike counters with "Titane," a 2021 body horror thriller from French director Julia Ducournau, which follows a car-loving exotic dancer-turned-serial killer who manipulates a firefighter by pretending to be his missing son. She started off as a content manager in the agency world at Ogilvy, then went to the non-profit at Do Something for a few years then back to the agency world as a producer at Big Spaceship. She then spent a few years at Squarespace on their brand team and had a stint at JP Morgan, Peloton and Vivino, an online wine market place. Along the way, she freelanced and had multiple side projects such as Feed & Foster, a peer mentorship dinner for women of color and Notes International. With each step, Farrah has deliberately chosen to pursue work that fuels her creativity and aligns with her values, always being intentional on what it is that she needs and wants next and building a career that is uniquely hers.We talked about the power of taking a non-linear path, the lessons she's learned from shifting industries, balancing a full-time role with passion projects, how they impact each other, and redefining what success looks like beyond a 9-to-5.Here is Farah Sheikh-Ogoe for 5to9.

On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell and Sharon Schwartz discuss the following questions: Why do we often interpret God's inactivity, or delayed response to a given situation to be rejection? Talk about a time in your life when you felt God was standing by with His hands in His pockets doing nothing. The reading for the day is Psalm 74:1-11.

Writing postcards to encourage people to vote and spelling out what is at stake with our upcoming election is a tangible way to do something. Would you be interested in hosting a postcard party? If so, check out the show notes for links to sites that help you get started. I'm jazzed looking for tangible, meaningful ways to DO SOMETHING, do many things that help move our country forward with integrity, hope and JOY. I can't remember ever smiling so much while watching a political convention. I predict the top three names for baby girls born this year will be Hope, Joy and Kamala!! Night 3 of the party of the decade featured some real surprises: Stevie Wonder delivering heartfelt words and a rousing "Higher Ground." Sheila E was joined by John Legend to play Minnesota favorite son Prince's "Let's Go Crazy" before we officially met MN Gov Coach Tim Walz, the next Vice President of the United States. Speakers from Oprah Winfrey to Amanda Gorman to Hakeem Jefferies wowed the crowd... and we heard from rising Dem Party stars PA Gov Josh Shapiro and Sec of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. And the crowd was even courteous and welcoming to two figures that many would have preferred not have prime time speaking slots, former President Bill Clinton and Speaker emeritus Nancy Pelosi. There was mostly that inescapable Joy in the room, but I was heartened by the warn response and love shown toward Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Poln, one of 8 Americans still being held captive by Hamas terrorists in Gaza since he was abducted on Oct 7 of last year. Another night that was excellent in both substance and style... Today on the show, we'll do as we've been doing all week... we'll hear some highlights and a few full speeches from last night... Do Something!

We invade Chicago for a little convention time. Instead of our usual Zoom chats, Jeff and Walt go face to face as they meet up on the left side of the lake. Between performances by Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Lil' Jon, Pink, The Chicks and Patti LaBelle there's some political speechmaking going with the Obamas, the Clintons, Oprah, Tim Walz and (of course) Kamala Harris bringing down the house. Michigan was well represented on the podium with the aforementioned Stevie Wonder along with Dana Nessel, Mallory McMorrow and the omnipresent Gretchen Whitmer. Even the usually deadly dull roll call of the states provided real entertainment, and of course made Trump grumpier than usual.
