As the boys continue tredging through their Miscellaneous Marvel characters, this week they have run into a doozy. Man Thing is a character who hung out with Howard The Duck in the comics. But other than that, there's not much identification with him apart from being a side show character made up right around the time DC's Swamp Thing made its first appearance. So who better to bring it to the screen other than the one man who was sued by Children of the Corn's creator Stephen King. That's right, the boys already covered filmmaker Brett Leonard when they reviewed The Lawnmower Man last year. And here they're doing it again, as Leonard brought an origin story with him, along with a horror aesthetic, and the chick from 2007's Transformers. As Garrett, Adam, and Matt already covered the SciFi channel original Children of the Corn remake from 2009, will they still have any venom left for this other SciFi original, which was originally supposed to go to theaters. And oh yeah, was produced by future Marvel powerhouse producer himself Kevin Feige.

ART! TRASH! TERROR! Adventures in Strange Cinema (Headpress 2025) by Chris Alexander is a treasure trove of in-depth essays and edifying interviews that celebrate some of the most eccentric and unforgettable movies in cult cinema history. From recognized classics (George A. Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, David Lynch's The Elephant Man) to misunderstood masterpieces (Michael Mann's The Keep, Boris Sagal's The Omega Man) to unfairly maligned curios (Kostas Karagiannis' Land Of The Minotaur, Brett Leonard's Hideaway), the author takes an alternately serious and playful but always personal look at several strains of international horror, dark fantasy, and exploitation film -- motion pictures that transform, transgress, challenge, infuriate, shock, and entertain. Connecting these passionate and critical essays are insightful interviews with revered talents, such as John Waters (writer/director, Cecil B. Demented), Michael Winner (director, The Sentinel), Nicolas Cage (actor, Vampire's Kiss), Gene Simmons (co-founder/bassist, KISS), William Crain (director, Blacula), William Lustig (director, Maniac), Werner Herzog (director, Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht) and many more, as well as witty, heartfelt memoirs charting the author's oddball experiences on the fringes of Hollywood and beyond. Tune in as Andy (Fat Dude Digs Flicks Movie Podcasts) slides back into his guest seat for a breakdown of Virtuosity, the 1995 sci-fi action thriller that sends a prisoner with a police officer background on a mission to stop a serial killer who's managed to escape his birthplace of virtual reality and is now terrorizing the real world. The investment that director Brett Leonard puts into VR through projects like Virtuosity and The Lawnmower Man, the lovably bonkers expanse of Russell Crowe's committed performance, the cheesy and dated 90s CGI in this cyberpunk landscape, and the missed opportunity to further flesh out the commentary on topics like incarcerated slave labor and police brutality stand out as a few of the subjects that this episode covers. Directed by Brett Leonard, Virtuosity stars Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Kelly Lynch, Stephen Spinella, William Forsythe, Louise Fletcher, William Fichtner, Costas Mandylor, Kevin J. O'Connor, Kaley Cuoco, Christopher Murray, and Heidi Schanz. Zo, while vacationing in Las Angeles, narrowly avoids getting caught up in a hostage situation. There was a club nearby that he thought about checking out, but he skipped it because this dance club didn't have the vibe that he was looking for. Later he saw on the news that the club had been taken over by a crazed lunatic who was forcing people to scream at gunpoint for the sheer pleasure of it. Zo could have been one of those people. There are also conspiracy theories floating around that the crazy man is actually a serial killer computer program set loose on the public in an advanced android body by the government to cull the population. They can't do that can they? Is that technology even feasible? Zo decides that the moral of the story is to stay out of dance clubs. 00:03:33 - Opening Credits for Virtuosity starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe00:12:39- Favorite Parts of the 1995 Film: Virtuosity00:30:48- Trivia from the Movie Virtuosity00:37:56 - Critics' Thoughts on Brett Leonard's Virtuosity Please leave a comment, suggestion or question on our social media: Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:Website: www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@backlookcinemaTwitter: https://twitter.com/backlookcinemaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BackLookCinemaInstagram: https://instagram.com/backlookcinemaThreads: https://www.threads.net/@backlookcinemaTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@backlookcinemaTwitch https://www.twitch.tv/backlookcinemaBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/backlookcinema.bsky.socialMastodon: https://mstdn.party/@backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com Again, thanks for listening.

It's 1995, and this Brett Leonard thriller flings us into the distant future (1999) where a computer-generated Russell Crowe must be hunted down by a relentless Denzel Washington. It's a bravura performance from Crowe, who leaves no piece of scenery un-chewed; and an early start for Washington's long catalogue of man-with-handgun-does-shouting oeuvre.
We travel back to 1995 to learn about the futuristic world of 1999 this week with Virtuosity starring Russell Crowe as... a ham sandwich? The guys talk all about Crowe's absolutely bananas performance as SID 6.7 and his literal devouring of scenery but they also discuss the music of screams, the UFC content, Denzel Washington's wig and much more. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This April is “Cyber Techno Future Shock” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long we'll be reviewing some of the goofiest “techno-thrillers” from the 90's. This week, Trevor and Kyle review Brett Leonard's, Virtuosity (1995)! Starring a prime Denzel Washington, and featuring the American film debut of a young Russell Crowe, Virtuosity (1995) is sadly little more than a middling VR obsessed techno-thriller from Brett Leonard, the director of previous episode/techno-turd, The Lawnmower Man (1992). Touching on heady concepts such as the dangers of AI, and VR content being incorporated into actual reality, Virtuosity is ultimately very little more than a basic cat-and-mouse manhunt film, albeit one that features a nifty sci-fi bent, and is populated with some of the more audacious sights and sounds of mid-90's American culture. Neither particularly deep in it's exploration of tech, nor especially thrilling, Virtuosity is unfortunately best remembered as a colorful yet hideous time capsule of mid-90's aesthetics, and as a minor trivia factoid in that it serves as Russell Crowe's introduction to Hollywood, and serves as his first collaboration with Denzel Washington prior to them working together again in the much better film, Ridley Scott's, American Gangster (2007). linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This April is “Cyber Techno Future Shock” month at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long we'll be reviewing some of the goofiest “techno-thrillers” from the 90's. First up, Trevor and Kyle review Brett Leonard's, The Lawnmower Man (1992)! Featuring at the time groundbreaking CGI animated sequences that are utterly laughable by contemporary standards, as well as pre-internet concepts regarding virtual reality subsuming actual reality, The Lawnmower Man is a difficult watch without the aid of rose tinted glasses, however for those with sufficient nostalgia for it's aesthetic, it's an often dull but still somehow charming cyber-thriller. In this episode the Guardians review Dead Pit, a 1989 horror/zombie film directed by Brett Leonard. Dead Pit is set in the scene of a Mental Asylum where a crazed doctor does bizzare experiments on the dead, and is killed and then re-awoken many years later, bringing back with him heaps of un-dead zombies from the dead pit! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/retroguardians/message
Thirty years since Lawnmower first aired, I asked Brett how the metaverse of our own time mirrors the Sci-Fi stories I grew up with as a kid. Will AI creator tools allow billions to summon their own simulated realities? How will artists imagine and construct what Brett calls “storyworlds” using technologies that are incredibly advanced, but also really human - and fallible.
Brett Leonard is an American film director, producer, and music video director specializing in science fiction and horror. He also hosts a podcast called What the F is the Metaverse. One of Leonard's first films, The Lawnmower Man, is considered the first significant movie to feature virtual reality as a cautionary tale long before our present fascination with all things virtual production.

You have to know what good narrative is. Knowing how that works in the human conscious and unconscious. That's really important. - Brett Leonard “I mean you don't even need to go to a college and get the tools. You can actually find those tools online. You could shoot with your phone, play around and really find out what works for you and your point of view as a storyteller.”- Brett Leonard “Blade Runner is really a narrative environment more than it is a traditional plot. I mean, the plot is incredibly simple. You know, Android chases other Androids and finds out he's an Android. You don't watch that movie again and again, because of the plot, you watch that cause you're exploring a narrative environment that has such richness in it.”- Brett Leonard Connecting with the Guest: Twitter: https://twitter.com/directorleonard LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brettleonard1/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brettleonard1/ Connecting with CG Pro: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/becomecgpro Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/becomecgpro/ Website: https://www.becomecgpro.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/becomecgpro RSVP here for upcoming CG Pro Podcasts: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/cg-pro-39748423833 #virtualproduction#storytelling#filmmaking

Dan and Conrad don their tightest neon cycling outfits and strap themselves into a gyroscope to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Lawnmower Man. Directed by Brett Leonard and starring a pre-Bond Pierce Brosnan as a neuro-scientist and Jeff Fahey as his gardener and unwitting lab rat, the film is most definitely not based on anything written by one of the most famous horror authors of all time. Certainly not after the lawsuit. It's a classic tale of a well-intentioned scientist whose combination of nootropic drugs and virtual reality gaming sessions results in a vengeful telekinetic cyber god. But do its ground-breaking CGI sequences and subtle character development stand the test of time, or should it be relegated to a landfill in China, alongside floppy disc drives and novelty mice? PLUS: How much of this southern judge's time can Stephen King take up?The Lawnmower Man stars Jeff Fahey, Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Lewis, Jenny Wright, Mark Bringelson, Colleen Coffey, Jeremy Slate, and Dean Norris; directed by Brett Leonard.
Welcome everyone to the Nexus of All Realities – A Man-Thing podcast! Today on the program: Man-Thing (The 2005 Movie) Today on the program I will be discussing the 2005 Brett Leonard directed loose adaptation of Man-Thing. This week on PDSMiOS, we entered a world of virtual reality and landscaping with the movie The Lawnmower Man from 1992! Mild mannered Jobe (Jeff Fahey) becomes the lab rat of Dr Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) who really wants Virtual Reality to work out. Like, real bad. I know what you're saying, we have the Gear VR and the Optimus Rip or whatever nowadays; but back in the day? VR was just a headache with graphics on par Minecraft, if Minecraft was made by a baby. But one of themes of this movie is technology and how it seems to leap and bound every year into new territory. It's only a matter of time before YOU, THE LISTENER, are left behind. Actually, I think the only lesson this movie has to teach us is that sometimes you just need to take your wife to the city ok? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKJzZQ9Ln-Y&t;=1006s Email: pleasedontpodcast@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/pdsmios Twitter: twitter.com/outerspacepod Ko-fi: ko-fi.com/pdsmios The Lawnmower Man (1992) Directed by Brett Leonard Written by Brett Leonard and Gimel Everett Starring: Jeff Fahety as Jobe Pierce Brosnan as Dr Angelo Jennie Wright as Marnie Mark Bringleson as Timms Geoffrey Lewis as Terry Jeremy Slate as Father McKeen Dean Norris as The Director Austin O'Brian as Peter

On this, the holiest of SPLATTERDAYS, the SPLATHOUSE crew drops their 13th episode, honoring the 25th anniversary (!!!) of 1992's The Lawnmower Man. The director of The Lawnmower Man, Brett Leonard (@directorleonard), drops in to talk about the project's genesis, the current state of VR filmmaking, and the controversy (and legal drama) surrounding the film's marketing campaign.Sickening Pictures' Zach Shildwachter (@zachforzombies) visits The SPLATHOUSE again to spread his love for Director Leonard (Man-Thing, Feed, Virtuosity). There's also a round of What Do Ya Know? with one of Jim Rock's SEXIER bandmates (from For the Ladies); John makes the case for a 21st century adaptation of CyberGod; The gang gives a VERY FALSE interpretation of an early studio pitch for King's short story.Enjoy! Stephen King sued to get his name removed from New Line Cinema's film The Lawnmower Man. Then stars Jeff Fahey and Pierce Brosnan moved on to other projects as well. Even director Brett Leonard had other films to make. So why did New Line insist on making a follow-up to the cyber-sexy horror film? And could there be more on-the-nose casting than Matt Frewer, TV's Max Headroom, to play virtual reality computer god Jobe Smith? Jack in, and listen to Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart's review to find out!
