We could have watched a probably cooler show about teeny tiny police officers, but instead we watched a dumb sitcom about what women think and feel. Of coarse, no one bothered to consult any women about what they think and feel, and it's pretty obvious. Plus all the hot bidet takes you can stand! Miles Baumgartner lost his boyfriend. His house. His job. Worst of all, he lost his nephew when Ian—his almost-son—died, mangled in a car crash nine months ago.So how is there a recent photo of Ian on Facebook?Miles follows a trail of rumors and half-truths to a long-abandoned orphanage in the Wisconsin Northwoods. But St. Hamelin’s is not as empty as he expected. Secrets haunt the shadowed halls. Horrors slink within darkened rooms. Snowbound, Miles hunts for the truth of what really happened to Ian and the children of that unholy place. They say that time heals all wounds, but time is running out for Miles. His personal demons have awakened. The terrors tighten their grip. To have any chance of starting a new life, he must escape before malignant forces curse him to walk eternally with the evils inhabiting St. Hamelin’s. Max Booth III is the Editor-in-Chief of Perpetual Motion Machine, the Managing Editor of Dark Moon Digest, and the host of two podcasts: Ghoulish and Castle Rock Radio. He's the author of many novels and frequently contributes articles to LitReactor, CrimeReads, the San Antonio Current, Fangoria, and Film-14.
This week, we're excited to welcome Max Booth III and Lori Michelle of Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing to the show! Max and Lori are almost superhuman in the amount of projects they take on in indie publishing from running Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and their fiction magazine Dark Moon Digest to doing their own writing, podcasting, formatting books, and so much more. It was a lot of fun to hang out with them and talk about their various projects and some of the behind the scenes editorial stuff at Perpetual Motion Machine. Max and Lori have consistently put out some of the best and most original dark fiction in the genre today and if you haven't picked up one of their books yet, well, what are you waiting for? During the course of the episode, we discuss Hannibal, Lori's background in publishing, their editorial process together at PMMP, Lost Contacts, how they acquire books, Paul Michael Anderson's Standalone, the inspiration for We Need To Do Something, Night Frights, upcoming projects, Max breaks down ejaculation terms, interviewing Joe Lansdale, favorite podcasts and so much more.
*All the President's Minutes* is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 45, I join writer for Rebeller, Fangoria, Dark Moon Digest and connoisseur of movie trash-art, Jacob Knight. Jacob and I discuss to the allure of the idiosyncratic, the dopamine rush of chasing the truth in President's and David Fincher's Zodiac and Jacob advocates for the upcoming documentary Alan Pakula: Going for Truth. *About Jacob Knight* Rising from the sewers of Philadelphia, Jacob Knight is a man out of time currently residing in Austin, TX. When not lamenting the Disneyfication of our current culture, he's usually enjoying a whiskey, watching some form of disreputable trash cinema, or drunkenly perusing one of the few remaining video stores. No matter what, do not @ him. *Twitter:* @JacobQKnight ( https://twitter.com/JacobQKnight ) *Outlets:* Rebeller, Fangoria, Dark Moon Digest, Birth Movies Death ( https://birthmoviesdeath.com/author/jacob.knight ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
Scott Beggs has a new short story out in the latest issue of Dark Moon Digest (#39!) about black market organ harvesting. In this week's episode of Ghoulish, he was kind enough to talk for a half hour about the weird research route he went on while writing the story, including how the system tends to screw over med students. We also discuss what we would like to happen to our bodies when we finally die. Follow Scott Beggs on Twitter. Buy Dark Moon Digest Issue #39. Browse PMMP's books. Support us on Patreon. Sympathy For the Devil by Brenda Kezar. Narrated by J.S. Arquin. Featuring an afterword written by Brenda Kezar. #fantasy #comedy #humor #fiction #podcast A glowing, orange man-shape swept into the bedroom. “Ah, there you are.” She yelped and fell back onto the bed. “How the hell did you get in here?” “No mere lock will keep me at bay.” The glow brightened, illuminating him. His skin was red, and long, curved horns jutted from his head. His feet were cloven, his thighs covered in fur. His loincloth had caught-up on the worn leather pouch around his waist. He was naked underneath. He followed her gaze and flipped the loincloth back into place. “It is frigid in here. Shrinkage is to be expected.” Brenda Kezar writes horror, fantasy, and science fiction from the dark tundra of North Dakota. She is a proud member of the Horror Writers Association and mom to an evil corgi named Honey Booboo. Her short stories have appeared in Dark Moon Digest, Daily Science Fiction, Silverthought, Welcome to Miskatonic University, Zombidays: Festivities of the Flesheaters, and many other publications. This week, we had a great time talking with Max Booth III, who has written Carnivorous Lunar Activities, The Nightly Disease, How to Successfully Kidnap Strangers to just name some of his books. In addition to writing, Max also runs Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing and Dark Moon Digest with his partner Lori Michelle and hosts two podcasts, Castle Rock Radio and Ghoulish. Our conversation with Max was full of laughs and occasionally took a turn for the surreal. We talked to Max about his writing inspirations, how he teamed up with Fangoria for Carnivorous Lunar Activities, the origin story of PMMP, his upcoming Cemetery Dance novel Touch The Night, and a host of other topics. And yes, skunks AND Dick Spiders both make an appearance. This was an amazing conversation and one of the most fun episodes we've recorded. This is one episode you don't want to miss, trust me. Check out our conversation with Max now right here on Ink Heist or on your favorite streaming service. Support Perpetual Motion Machine Publishing on Patreon!
Lori Michelle is the other half of Perpetual Motion Machine, Dark Moon Digest, and Castle Rock Radio, so it's only natural for her to finally make an appearance on Ghoulish. Last night we spent 8 hours selling books at a Tim Burton-themed festival in downtown San Antonio, so today we sat around recapping the event, which included naked body painting, drunk costume contest hosts, and injuring myself while carrying several boxes of books. “Was it possible that at every gathering, concert, peace rally, love-in, be-in and freak-in, here, up North, back East, wherever, some dark crews had been busy all along, reclaiming the music, the resistance to power, the sexual desire, from epic to everyday, all they could sweep up, for the ancient forces of greed and fear?” That’s a question Doc’s mind-with-the-munchies chews on in Inherent Vice, both the book and the film. "Gee," ultimately thinks. "I don't know." Well, today’s guest certainly thinks so, as he walks us through the lattice of beastly beneficiaries to the betrayal of a generation, a movement, a decade, a country—COINTELPRO informants, conspiranoid CIA ops, mismanaged and malevolent FBI agents, rogue LAPD officers, and that strange sick fuck Charlie Manson himself—and just how easily they can swing you to their side, with a simple conversation in a room a lot like the one Doc finds himself in today…About the Guest - JACOB KNIGHTJacob has written for Rebeller, Fangoria, Birth.Movies.Death., and Dark Moon Digest.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations
