Rock is Lit: The Stalker and the Rocker: Kat Hausler Reads From Her Novel ‘What I Know About July'

Rock N Roll Pantheon

In this installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Kat Hausler reads an excerpt from her novel ‘What I Know About July' and discusses its creation. The novel centers around indie rocker Simon Kemper, fresh out of rehab and riding the wave of moderate success with his band in Berlin. But lurking in the background is his stalker, a mysterious figure present at every show, sending unsettling postcards to his label and acting as though she owns him. When she suddenly vanishes during one of his performances, Simon becomes the prime suspect. What begins as an attempt to clear his name spirals into a deeper psychological journey, as Simon questions whether her obsession could have truly ended—or if it has merely become entangled in the lives of those closest to him: his bandmates, a new romantic interest, an embittered ex, and the person he thought he had left behind. Narcissistic and insecure, Simon's struggle to become a better person is central to this haunting story. Originally from Virginia, Kat Hausler is a graduate of New York University and holds an M.F.A. in Fiction from Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she was the recipient of a Baumeister Fellowship. She is the author of ‘Retrograde' and ‘What I Know About July', as well as many shorter pieces. Her work has appeared in ‘Hawaii Pacific Review', ‘34th Parallel', ‘Inkspill Magazine', ‘The Sunlight Press', ‘The Dalloway', ‘Rozlyn Press', ‘Porridge Magazine', ‘LitReactor', ‘BlazeVOX', ‘failbetter', and' The Airgonaut', among others. She lives in Berlin and is also a translator.   MUSIC IN THE EPISODE IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE: Rock is Lit theme music [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop” [Free] Indie Rock x Alternative Type Beat—“Borderline” [Free] Lana del Rey Type Beat/“Tell Me You Love Me”/Indie Rock Type Beat (Free) Acoustic Guitar Type Beat—“Need You” [Guitar Instrumental Beat] Sad Rock [Free Use Music] Punch Deck—“I Can't Stop”  Rock is Lit theme music   LINKS: Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Goodpods: https://goodpods.com/podcasts/rock-is-lit-212451 Leave a rating and comment for Rock is Lit on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rock-is-lit/id1642987350 Kat Hausler's website: https://www.kathausler.com/ Kat Hausler on Facebook: @KatHausler Kat Hausler on Instagram: @kat_hausler Kat Hausler on Twitter: @Kat_Fiction Christy Alexander Hallberg's website: https://www.christyalexanderhallberg.com/rockislit Christy Alexander Hallberg on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube: @ChristyHallberg Rock is Lit on Instagram: @rockislitpodcast Learn more about your ad choices. Here is the sixth, and final, LitReactor ARChive episode. In this one, I chat with the two head honchos of LitReactor about the genesis of the site, the goals of the site, and some of the highlights over the years. Peppered throughout are some call-in audio clips from contributors. It's a nice little tribute to the site, and a fitting goodbye. I appreciate everything it worked for and represented over the years, and hopefully people like having this peek behind the curtain. You don't want to miss the next episode! It's the 2024 Horror Preview (Jan-June)! Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes join me to look ahead to the first half of the year, and talk about some of the books we're most looking forward to. It's a great conversation. Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe

LitReactor, as we know it, is closing down. I'm reposting the episodes I hosted for Unprintable (their podcast) over here on The ARC Party, so that they don't go away when the site shuts down. This is the fifth of six episodes - a deep dive into grammar featuring LR's managing editor, and two LR columnists who both have written and/or taught classes on the topic of grammar. One more to go after this. I'm rounding out the series with my discussion with Rob Hart and Josh Chaplinsky - where they talk about how the site started, and some of the highlights of the first ten years. So keep an eye out for that, and also for my 2024 Horror Preview episode featuring Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes. It's not to be missed! We share some personal stories from our years of experience, share what really matters to us when it comes to respecting guests, cultivating engaging questions, and delivering a great experience for everyone. I encourage you all to check out This Is Horror, and Brian Keene's podcasting ventures as well. And if you're feeling it, you can go back into my past, and check out some of the interviews I've had on my former podcast, Booked. Two more to go! If you were ever curious about what goes in to a book review, or what some of the dos and don'ts are, this is the episode for you! Hear a social media influencer talk about her take on reviews and how it's evolved over the years. Hear about a librarian who writes reviews for other librarians. And from me, who just did it on a podcast for a damn decade. I'll be posting three more of these! With the lights at LitReactor going dark for good in the coming weeks, I wanted to find a way to archive the handful of episodes that I recorded from them back in 2021. This is the first of six episodes, where I “re-air” the talks I hosted on their podcast, Unprintable. In this episode, Rob Hart joins me as a cohost to speak with Alma Katsu about her then-newly released book RED WIDOW, and also her then-upcoming book THE FERVOR. It's a great conversation, and I hope that if you haven't read Alma's work before, you're inspired to now. She writes great historical horror, as well as epsionage books! Coming soon, I'll be posting the other five episodes that I recorded with Unprintable, including an interview with SA Cosby, episodes on Grammar, Interviews, Reviews, and a 10th anniversary retrospective with Rob Hart and Josh Chaplinsky. Also, this week I'm recording an episode with Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes where we look ahead to our most anticipated books of the first half of 2024. As you can see, lots to come soon from Arc Party! I hope everyone has a great holiday season, enjoys some throwback episodes, and that you're all as excited as I am for what's coming in 2024! In a series of candid, reflective, sometimes humorous essays, Botton describes coming to feminism and self-actualization as an older person, second (and third and fourth) chances—and how maybe it's never too late to find your way...assuming you're lucky enough to live long. Now that summer is winding down, it's time to pass that beach book along to a friend and pick up something with more substance. If you're eyeing something more informative, thrilling, and poignant, then “Winter Counts” needs to be added to your “must-read” list ASAP. Here is a brief summary of the award-winning book.  “Virgil Wounded Horse is the local enforcer on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota.  When justice is denied by the American legal system or the tribal council, Virgil is hired to deliver his own punishment, the kind that's hard to forget. But when heroin makes its way into the reservation and finds Virgil's own nephew, his vigilantism suddenly becomes personal. He enlists the help of his ex-girlfriend and sets out to learn where the drugs are coming from, and make them stop. They follow a lead to Denver and find that drug cartels are rapidly expanding and forming new and terrifying alliances.  And back on the reservation, a new tribal council initiative raises uncomfortable questions about money and power. As Virgil starts to link the pieces together, he must face his own demons and reclaim his Native identity. He realizes that being a Native American in the 21st century comes at an incredible cost. We on a bit of hiatus for January as we prepare for our three year podcast anniversary and our 2021 podcast line up. We’re reformatting the show for the new year and can't wait to share more on that soon! In the meantime, we’re releasing the last of our interviews recorded in 2020. We also want to point you to our blog space, where we've been posting a lot more written author interviews as well as some reprinted short fiction. For the moment, we are open to fiction reprint submissions, and in particular, we want to raise stories back from the dead. We want stories that were originally published in now-defunct venues. Currently we aren’t able to pay authors but we want that to change. Therefore, we are hosting a Patreon challenge! When we hit 30 patrons, we pledge pay $25 per reprint. We want to keep increasing what we pay so we foresee another Patreon challenge in our future. Baby steps! With that said, we've been making some changes to our podcast tiers. We offer cool rewards at every tier, including early, ad-free episodes; bonus written, audio, and video content from special guest authors (this month we’ve got a special video from author Gwendolyn Kiste!); and the Patrons-Only podcast LOTF After Dark. Head on over to patreon.com/ladiesofthefright for all the gory details! One final bit of housekeeping: We are hosting a live three year anniversary special event on Sunday, January 31, at 10:30pm Eastern. We'll be joined by special guest co-host Kathryn E. McGee, horror author and host of the Skeleton Hour webinar series and The Thing in the Labyrinth Horror Bookclub.  We'll reflect on the past three years, share our vision for the podcast's future, answer questions, and party. New logo reveal + surprise pop in guests + giveaways! Come celebrate three years with us. Live event on Zoom - register today. Show Notes We are thrilled to bring you this conversation with author, editor, teacher, and overall horror advocate Richard Thomas. Richard spent twenty years in advertising before coming back to writing. Since then he’s been an author, editor, teacher, and publisher. He’s the award-winning author of three novels, three short story collections, two novellas, and over 150 short stories. In addition to teaching at Storyville, he’s also taught at the University of Iowa, LitReactor.com, and Story Studio Chicago. We really loved this conversation with Richard. If you have any new year’s resolutions to dedicate more time to writing, we can’t think of any better way to commit than to sign up for a class with Richard over at Storyville! There are still spots in his Contemporary Dark Fiction classes. He even has one set for summer, May-Aug on London/UK/GMT time which he’s  never done before. It’s 50% sold so check it out if you’re into it. And he also has one running in September. Head on over to storyvilleonline.com for more info!  Find Richard: Twitter | Website | Storyville

With his new novel, The Grand Dark (Harper Voyager), Richard Kadrey takes an artistic leap from his renowned Sandman Slim supernatural noir books. We sit down in a murder hotel to talk about mixing robots and genetic engineering with Weimar Germany, getting inspired by Mel Gordon's Voluptuous Panic, David Bowie's Low, and the Brothers Quay's Street of Crocodiles, the impact of the 2016 election on his writing, and how he's getting ready to end the Sandman Slim series. We also get into the gentrification of the east Village and the Bowery, the thin line between preservation and nostalgia, the moment his brain got warped by Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, our shared love of What We Do In The Shadows, the time he attended a screening of Cronenberg's Crash with Kathy Acker, his LitReactor course on writing dark urban fantasy, the wonder of being edited by Ellen Datlow, the accretionary model of novel-writing, and why it's okay to build your fantastic world by just looking out the window. Erotica has played a significant role in my own sexual exploration and development - from teaching me about my own desires and fantasies to understanding the depth of other people's sexual landscapes. It's a yummy and delicious space to play in. That's why I'm so excited to be joined by Rachel Kramer Bussel this week, who has edited over 60 erotica books and who currently has 2 open calls for submissions. So listeners - if you are at all interested in getting some erotica published, take a look at the links down below. Rachel talks about what makes for good erotica, how we can use erotica to not only arouse but to heal, ways to make erotica political and transformative, and all the ways she wants to challenge the narrative around conventional beauty in the stories she writes. Where are the fat men and the bald men and the short men and the body diversity? We even talk about necrophilia, which may be a first for the show.  Plus, Rachel teases us with a few minutes from an erotic story called "Starstruck" by Lazuli Jones, so settle in and get ready to get excited about all things erotica.
