For decades, he's kept a strict writing schedule, pumping out around 2,000 words (roughly 10 pages) each morning. More than 350 books later, he's sharing what he knows with a new book of writing advice called “There's Something Strange About My Brain: Writing Horror for Kids.” R.L. Stine joins Tom to talk about how growing up feeling like a fearful outsider inspired him to retreat in his room and write, how he accidentally ended up writing horror books for kids, and what his best advice is for young writers.

Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey are both powerhouse bestselling authors in their own rights. Now, they've merged their considerable talents in cosmic horror and urban fantasy to create the new novel, THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN. In a New York City absolutely filthy with magic—monsters and the mundane intermingle. When that cohabitation breeds horrific problems—and it always does—you need people like Julie Crews to clean up the mess. But being a coked-out, broke ass, pig-pen disaster of a magician like Julie creates as many issues as it solves. Struggling to make rent and constantly getting screwed by her clients, Julie is desperate to score some real paying work. Complicating matters is the arrival of her childhood friend Sarah, the prim and pretty opposite to Julie's deadbeat, mage-punk lifestyle. Sarah's brightness is just what she needs, and the vibes are way more than platonic. But Sarah brought her own baggage to the big city. When Julie's pompous Wall Street ex-boyfriend Tyler calls, offering big money for a highly suspicious job, she can't refuse. Getting tangled up in his lies, and the innumerable arms of a dream-eating demon, will be least of their issues, though. Because Tyler's corporate job serves some seriously eldritch monstrosities, big ugly elder god-things on a schedule to consume their workforce. And maybe the world. This, of course, is all about to become Julie's giant mess to solve—and make infinitely worse along the way. THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN is a visceral, violent, wickedly fun urban fantasy available now from Tor Nightfire: Amazon » Bookshop » About Cassandra Khaw Cassandra Khaw is an award-winning game writer and former scriptwriter at Ubisoft Montreal. This week we're talking money, specifically in terms of writing (horror) screenplays that sell, and to help with that, we have a guest! Writer of both TV and Film Seth M. Sherwood. They talk the benefits of writing spec scripts (even if you won't likely sell them), how "original" horror movies get made (and who gets to make them), how A24 didn't invent "Elevated Horror" (or social horror), and the landscape for Horror TV writers (plus how it pertains to the impending 2023 writer's strike). Our Weekly Resource: This week's resource is…is a movie, AIR. This is the first time I believe that we've recommended a movie as the resource where the guest didn't write it – no offense to Seth, but this is going to be on a lot of "Best" lists at the end of the year, guaranteed. And the story of how screenwriter, Alex Convery, got his very first screen credit is worthy of tracking down for your own inspirational fuel. What's in this episode:Originally from New Orleans, Todd Sullivan moved to Asia 12 years ago, living in Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Todd talks about his experiences doing an MFA, and the main learnings he took away. He also shares his love of vampires and the wider horror genre. It all started with Sesame Street's The Count, and Count Duckula. We discussed Twilight and what made it different to the other vampire stories, admiring how she gave a unique twist to an old story. Many genre stories have their tropes, and we examine what they are for horror. Todd explains where he got the initial inspiration for his vampire series and then how he fits writing into his life. Sullivan is a fantastic example of how if you do "a little bit over time" you can see the words build and before you know it, you have a book. This approach stops him from burning out. Critique workshops have been a great help to Todd, both in person and online groups. He sites Scribophile as a great place to find critique partners.Todd is a martial arts fan, studying kendo and fencing, and this passion shows up in his fiction with lots of action scenes. Sharing details about his web series, For The God's Open Eyes, Todd explains that it's based on African mythology. He and his co-creators have built on the original tales by mixing African, Korean and American mythology/superhero stories together, creating something new. Listen to today's episode and discover how you can make room in your life for your writing by doing just a little bit every day. Notes:Fable referenced a quote by Richard Price about approaching writing in a war context. Here is that full quote:- “You don't write about the horrors of war. No. You write about a kid's burnt socks lying in the road.”The Verbivore references a scene from the animated Disney movie Mulan where a doll stands in for the loss of an innocent child in the war with the Huns. Here is a link to the scene which introduces that story element:- Mulan - The Huns (Shang Yu is approaching) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqP95URub_oThe Verbivore mentions the aspect of human psychology that it is easier to relate and empathize with an individual than with a large group of people. The example used was that you can feel sorry for one dog that has had it’s tail stepped on, but what if you are told that thousands of dogs have had their tails stepped on. This is known as Psychic numbing. Here is an article if you are interesting in researching into this further:- "If I look at the mass I will never act": Psychic numbing and genocide http://journal.sjdm.org/7303a/jdm7303a.htmThe Verbivore references the idea of ensign redshirts in Star Trek, which in the fandom refers to characters who are expendable and are killed off to up the tension and stakes in a given storyline. The Verbivore brings up a quote from the disorienting opening of the novel The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. Here is that full quote:- “The knife had done almost everything it was brought to that house to do, and both the blade and the handle were wet.”We used many different resources to prepare for this episode including our own experience. Austin accompanies Amanda as she revisits twenty years of fannish enthusiasm and exasperation to discuss the Hannibal Lecter tetralogy by Thomas Harris. Specifically, why are the first two in the series so good despite their pitfalls? Why is the prequel so underwhelming? Amanda talks the perils of showing the monster, writing from a genius' POV, changing genres throughout a series, and licking steering wheels. **Content warnings:** This episode discusses murder, cannibalism, transphobia, abuse, gaslighting, non-consensual drugging, brainwashing, and other gross subjects you'd expect to find in an episode about a sadistic cannibal who thinks he's an artiste.
