What if the next evolution of your leadership is not about becoming louder, harder, or more forceful — but more congruent? In this reflective episode, I share two unexpected moments from nature: a skunk family peacefully foraging in my backyard and a mother swan shielding her young. What first looked like simple beauty became a deeper invitation into boundaries, protection, perception, and self-trust. For mission-driven leaders who care deeply, this conversation explores the quiet power of leading with both warmth and clarity — without over-explaining, over-functioning, or abandoning what matters. In this episode, you'll learn: Why peaceful leadership still needs clear, respectful boundaries How protection can be graceful without becoming controlling What nature reveals about self-trust, perception, and embodied leadership Listen in if you're ready to lead with more presence, discernment, and quiet confidence. Female skunks usually only have one litter each year, but male skunks can reproduce with more than one female during the breeding season, according to the University of Michigan. Skunks have a gestation period of 63 days. The young are born in April or May and the average litter contains about six young with litters ranging from two to ten. Young skunks remain in the nest from six to seven weeks before they start accompanying their parents. Check your property for potential den sites. Baby skunks, known as kits, are protected by their Mother who seeks out safe, sheltered spaces to raise their young, often choosing burrows beneath porches, crawlspaces, or other structures. Den openings are usually four to six inches wide and may have a faint skunk odor. Now is a great time to inspect your property and take steps to humanely discourage skunks from settling in. Warning: a skunk can spray multiple times, reaching up to 15 feet! If your dog has sprayed, the recommendation is to: Wash out their eyes and mouth with clean water Bath them with a skunk shampoo. Commercial products are available but you can make your own with 3 parts 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1 part baking soda, and a teaspoon of dish soap. Wash them a second time with your normal pet shampoo Check them for bites as skunks can transmit rabies Monitor for illness for the next couple of days and consult with your veterinarian if there is any abnormal behavior Reference: https://wayne.osu.edu/news/skunk-mating-season-could-be-tricky-pets Experts Warn of a Big “Bug Boom” Across the U.S. This Summer A surge in insects could be on the way across the United States this spring and summer, according to experts—and it may be noticeable just about everywhere. Entomologists with the National Pest Management Association say unusual winter weather has created the perfect conditions for bugs to survive and multiply. As a result, Americans can expect pests to show up earlier than normal—and in larger numbers. The science behind it is fairly straightforward. A mix of mild winter temperatures, insulating snow, and early spring warmth allowed more insects to make it through the season. Now, rising heat and moisture are helping those populations grow quickly. Jim Fredericks, a senior official with the group, says this kind of extreme and inconsistent winter can have a ripple effect, boosting pest activity well into the warmer months. Experts warn that mosquitoes, ticks, flies, ants, and even cockroaches could all be more active than usual in 2026. That includes popular travel spots like beaches, parks, and other outdoor destinations. The takeaway: be prepared. Stocking up on bug spray, staying alert outdoors, and taking simple prevention steps could help reduce the impact of what's shaping up to be a very buggy season. Reference: https://parade.com/travel/united-states-destinations-swarmming-with-bugs-this-summer https://www.southernliving.com/bug-boom-spring-summer-11930064 According to the CDC regarding ticks, there has been a surge across America in recent years of Lyme Disease. How Lyme Disease Spreads Lyme disease bacteria causing human infection in the United States are spread to people by blacklegged (Deer Tick) ticks. In general, infected ticks must be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection; prompt tick removal can prevent transmission. Infected ticks are found most commonly in forested areas in the northeastern, north-central, and mid-Atlantic states, and in smaller areas within Pacific Coast states. WEST VIRGINIA FUR AUCTION: BEAVERS & SKUNKS, ROOTS & ODDITIES | From Trappers to Buyers

The West Virginia Fur Auction is an annual fur, root, skull & antler consignment sale in Glenville, West Virginia. After a reading about the first fur-trade explorations over the Alleghenies into West Virginia in 1671-74, we head into the auction with in-the-field reporting on the modern fur, root, meat, gland and oddities markets, interviewing the likes of trappers, fur hangers, graders, buyers and members of the West Virginia Trappers Association. Many grew up trapping and we hear how meaningful it is to continue the very trade that founded America. From protecting endangered species to supporting natural materials over synthetic textiles, the trapper is discussed as an environmentalist. Throughout are charming moments like a young lady demoing how to skin a noxious skunk or what to do with a raccoon's pecker bone. As the buyers stand around the racks of bobcat pelts, piles of beavers, boxes of skunks and deer horns, we find out what they're looking for whether they specialize in garments, felt, costumes or oddities. As the auctioneer rattles off the bidding, you've got a front row seat to the fascinating world of American fur. Reading from The West Virginia Encyclopedia by Philip Mallory ConleyTo learn more about the West Virginia Trappers Association: wvtrappers.comSupport Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com

Bible Reading: Psalm 51:1-2; Romans 5:6-9Leo watched his ball roll under the shed, then he dropped his bat and crawled in after it. As he scooted under the edge, he spotted a pair of glowing eyes. A cat, thought Leo. He crawled closer. "Here, kitty," he called. The animal turned. Oh no! thought Leo. A skunk! Before he could scramble out of range, the skunk sprayed, and Leo was covered with an awful smell. "Mom!" he yelled. He hurried to the outdoor faucet, turned on the water, and tried to wash away the dreadful odor with the hose. Mom came out of the house and put her hand up to her nose. "We need to get those clothes in the washer right away, and you need a shower with lots of strong soap," she said. "And your hair! Wait here." She hurried back into the house and returned with a can of tomato juice. "Put your head under the hose," she said. Leo looked at the can of tomato juice. "What are you going to do with that?""Tomato juice is supposed to help cover the smell," Mom explained. "I'll see what else I can find, but for now this is the best I can do."When Dad heard the story, the skunk smell still lingered. "I thought it was a cat," said Leo. "I was going to pet it." Dad laughed. "Not funny!" said Leo, but he grinned too."Skunks leave a bad odor, but do you know what smells even worse?" asked Dad. Leo shook his head. "Sin," said Dad. "You could say sin stinks."Leo nodded. "I tried to wash off the skunk smell, but I needed help. We need help getting rid of the sin smell too, don't we? Something better than tomato juice!""Yes, we do," said Dad. "The Bible says only the blood of Jesus can get rid of our sin. He died for us and rose again so we could be forgiven and have a relationship with God. When we trust in Him, He removes the stench of our sin and makes us clean.""That's right. Just like that," Mom said, snapping her fingers. She sighed. "I wish we could do as good a job getting rid of that skunk smell," she added, wrinkling her nose. "Let's go wash your hair one more time!"–Angela JenkinsHow About You?Have you ever smelled a skunk before? It's awful! But sin is much worse, and no matter what we do, we can't get rid of the stench ourselves. The Bible says everyone has sinned, and it stinks up our lives with selfishness and hurt and separates us from God. Only Jesus can wash our sins away. Trust in Him and He will make you clean and right with God.
