What do you even think about when you are washing the dishes? But fear not, C.S. Humble has you covered. His weird western trilogy, That Light Sublime is packed with all of the above and more. In The Massacre at Yellow Hill and  A Red Winter in the West Seth introduces a cast of lovable rogues and the stakes of their battle against the worst that this and other worlds can offer. Now, in the concluding volume, The Light of Black Star, he brings it all home, with honour, humour and shattering heartbreak. We talk about broadening the scope of the western, how That Light Sublime links with Seth's Black Wells series, and he explains his fundamental disagreement with the tenets of cosmic horror. We cover what Mister Rogers has to oteach us about horror writing…and how to write stories that, in Seth's words… “attain the high romance that the human heart is reaching for.” He's a poet and a raconteur. It's that time of year and we're kicking it off with one hell of a horror story! Friend of the show Kevin Lucia joins us to talk about his debut novel, “The Horror at Pleasant Brook,” out on Oct. 13 through Crystal Lake Publishing.   This Halloween, a malevolent, creeping horror invades a small, isolated town nestled deep in the Adirondacks. It cares nothing for this town's secrets, prejudices, or flaws. Its only desires are to consume everything in its path and spread, until nothing else remains.   A small group of people stand in its way. They are the leftovers, the ignored, the excluded, and the dismissed. However, as the evil grows, they prove to be the only ones strong enough to stand and fight.   Cool synopsis, huh? Kevin, Curtis and I talk about the menacing force that we're introduced to in the first chapter and the real-life origin that happened during his day job as a teacher. Kevin's a familiar name in the horror publishing industry through his work at Cemetery Dance, and he shares how this helped him in the writing process.   We're introduced to some of the heroes of the story and what makes them stand out, and discuss some of the character types that reflect life in 2023. We look at some of the tropes in horror and the ones he hoped to avoid in this story.

A haunted item is a familiar element in horror novels, but a haunted desk? That's a new one to me and I am here for it! Continuing our series of interviews with authors on Cemetery Dance,  Philip Fracassi joins me to talk about his recent novel “Gothic.” Here's a look at what lies in store:   On his 59th birthday, Tyson Parks—a famous but struggling horror writer—receives an antique desk from his partner Sarah in the hopes it will rekindle his creative juices. Perhaps inspire him to write another bestselling novel and prove his best years aren't behind him. A continent away, a mysterious woman makes inquiries with her sources around the world, seeking the whereabouts of a certain artifact her family has been hunting for centuries. With the help of a New York City private detective, she finally finds what she's been looking for. It's in the home of Tyson Parks.   Philip and I look at the haunted desk and why he went this route, as well as its history and why others are looking for it. We talk about Tyson and how he's changed, as well as where he falls on the hero/villain spectrum. We also take a look at his forthcoming novel, “Boys in the Valley,” out later this summer.

Author Richard Chizmar stops by Mainstreet to talk about his celebrated career as a prolific essayist and writer of horror and mysery short stories, novels, and screenplays.  He is  the founder of Cemetery Dance Publications and editor/publisher of Cemetery Dance magazine.  Perhaps best-known in Harford County for his locally-inspired Chasing The Boogeyman, Richard also co-wrote with Stephen King the novella Gwendy's Button Box. Despite his international following and acclaim, Richard still calls Harford County home. Like his friend and sometimes collaborator, the actor Johnathon Schaech (episode 88), Richard credits the strong work ethic he learned from growing up and playing sports in working-class Edgewood for paving the way to his future success as a writer and publisher.
