Cephus Johnson - The Killing of Oscar GrantMarch 19Oscar Grant III was a 22-year-old African-American man who was killed in the early morning hours of New Year's Day 2009 by BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland, California. Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco, BART Police officers detained Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. BART officer Anthony Pirone kneed Grant in the head and forced Grant to lie face down on the platform. Mehserle drew his pistol and shot Grant. Grant was rushed to Highland Hospital in Oakland and pronounced dead later that day. The events were captured on bystanders' mobile phones. Owners disseminated their footage to media outlets and to various websites where it went viral. Both protests and riots took place in the following days.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
Dean Lowry is here to open things up for other people. That means a lot of work for very little personal reward. It's never been a problem for him. Cephus Johnson is here, perhaps, to simulate mobile quarterbacks on the scout team. And Chris Reed might get up at 4:30 AM each day to be a 3rd string swing backup. But they've all gone through hell to get here, and that's worth telling.WANT MORE DAILY MINNESOTA VIKINGS CONTENT?Join me on Patreon! https://patreon.com/lukebraunnflFollow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

Oscar Grant’s name has been circulating after police in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center claimed that 20-year-old Daunte Wright was “accidentally” killed after a veteran officer shot him with a gun instead of her taser. It's similar to what BART police claimed after an officer shot and killed Oscar Grant in 2009. Cephus Johnson, Grant’s uncle, talked with us last September following a summer of protests against police violence about what it’s like for family members who are thrust into activism after losing loved ones to police — and how to heal through resistance. Guest: Cephus Johnson, aka Uncle Bobby X, founder of the Oscar Grant Foundation and Love Not Blood Campaign. This short film was produced by the Glassbreaker Films team at The Center for Investigative Reporting. Glassbreaker Films is an all-female group of filmmakers working to promote gender parity in investigative journalism and documentary filmmaking. In the early hours of 2009, 22-year-old Oscar Grant was fatally shot by a Bay Area Rapid Transit police officer at the Fruitvale station in Oakland, California. The shooting was captured on cellphone video and made headlines nationwide, leading to a national conversation about police brutality. The officer who shot Grant was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and served 11 months in prison out of a two-year sentence. In the following years, as more police killings made the news, Grant’s mother, Wanda Johnson, decided to turn her pain and grief into a purpose. With Grant’s uncle, Cephus Johnson, she established The Oscar Grant Foundation, which led to a movement made up of mothers like her, whose sons were killed by police. She gathers with these women to help them find justice and ensure that their children are not forgotten. The number of members continues to grow steadily every year. This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay! 1. Cephus Johnson, a.k.a Uncle Bobby, is a social justice activist at the forefront of ending police brutality in America. He joins us to talk about the Love Not Blood Campaign. 2. Aldo Billingslea, (Othello, Ensemble), Cal Shakes production of Othello through Oct. 9. 3. Brothers Size at Theatre Rhino through October 15 at the Eureka Theatre, 215 Jackson Street, San Francisco. We speak to Gabriel Christian (Oshoosi Size) and LaKeidrick Wimberly (Ogun Size). 4. We close with Kirsten Johnson, director, "Cameraperson," which opened theatrically this past weekend in Landmark Cinema in San Francisco, Berkeley and at the San Rafael Film Center.

Who polices the police? Do you or your neighbors have any say in the way your town's cops and sheriffs do business? For more than 35 years, cities around the country have been creating civilian oversight agencies – trying to make local police and sheriffs accountable to the communities they serve. On this edition, producer Andrew Stelzer takes a look at the ongoing battle between the people and the police – and the debate over who gets to decide when an officer has done something wrong.
