At every level, the 2024-25 season was marked by positive steps forward for the U.S. Biathlon Team. As the season ended and a new one began with an on-snow camp in Bend, Ore., Head Coach Armin Auchentaller joined Heartbeat from his home in Antholz, characterizing the season as one of seeing what's possible. But he was quickly pointed out that now it starts all over again. And how do you get even better?“It always helps to have results because people just stay positive,” said Auchentaller. “There's a good mood. People see that things are possible. But I think, the day after those good results or the season, when the next season training season starts, once you had those good results, I think the best is to come back on the ground and just think of almost like, ‘yeah, how can I get better?'”In this episode of Heartbeat, Auchentaller speaks to the showcase results of Campbell Wright, winning two silver medals at the World Championships, a career-best for Paul Schommer, and continued development progress by Maxime Germaine, Lucy Anderson and Margie Freed. One of the keys to that progress has been shooting. “In order to reach good shooting skills, we need to work on the basics a lot, like dividing all the little things, like learning how to trigger, learning how to aim, learning how to breathe, learning how to bolt, learning how to go into position quick, and all of those little things and little things. Then put those things together. Those need to be high quality. It will take a lot of patience. It will take a lot of personal workload in their off times when they are without the team on their own.”One of the keys to the growing success of development athletes is Olympic shooting champion Matt Emmons, who serves as a coach for U.S. Biathlon. “We try to use his expertise in a way where athletes get access to experience what he had himself and open up a different perspective, under a different light, and give the athletes a lot of theoretical feedback through that and a lot of sharing, experience and a lot of expertise from his shooting career.”From a 2025 recap to a breakdown of the Bend camp to the vital innovation in the Montana State physiological testing program, Auchentaller covers a lot of ground in this final episode of Heartbeat for the 2025 season.

Send us a textThe transition from collegiate track to mountain trails represents one of running's most fascinating journeys – and Kyla Christopher-Moody is navigating it with remarkable authenticity and talent. Fresh off her selection to the 2025 Trail Team Elite, Kyla joins us to share her path from Michigan high school standout to Montana State University track athlete and now emerging trail running competitor. Her story isn't the typical straight line to success. After battling persistent injuries at the University of Colorado Boulder, Kyla made the courageous decision to step away from competitive running entirely – a choice she now calls "probably the best decision I've ever made in my life." This reset allowed her to rediscover her passion at Montana State, where mountain trails became her sanctuary during injury recovery. The natural progression to trail racing happened almost accidentally, with a spontaneous entry into the GoPro Games 10K resulting in an impressive fifth-place finish despite minimal specific training. What makes Kyla's approach refreshing is her process-oriented mindset and genuine love of competition. Rather than setting rigid outcome goals as she enters the trail running scene, she's focused on learning and exploration. "I don't have preconceived notions of what I'm able to do," she explains, demonstrating the healthy perspective that will serve her well as she targets races like Sierre-Zinal and the USATF Mountain Running Championships. Meanwhile, her academic pursuits in snow science perfectly complement her athletic journey, connecting her professional interests with her passion for mountain environments.Whether you're fascinated by the track-to-trail transition, curious about the emerging pathway for NCAA athletes into mountain running, or simply enjoy authentic conversations with rising stars, Kyla's story offers valuable insights into finding your path – even when it means taking unexpected turns along the way. Give this episode a listen and discover why we're so excited to follow Kyla's trail running journey in the months and years ahead.Follow Kyla on IG - @Kyla_CMFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_pod
Colter Nuanez was in Bozeman for the annual Sonny Holland Spring Classic. In this hour, he shares his takeaways from the Bobcats' spring game, including who stood out, what the depth chart looks like and where questions still lie for Montana State.
The Seattle Seahawks have brought back Drew Lock ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. It raises questions about the future of Sam Howell, and if there is any potential for trade compensation with a crowded quarterback room. General Manager John Schneider and Coach Mike Macdonald spoke at the pre-draft press conference on Monday and confirmed trade talks surrounding Howell. We talk about some of the parallels with the 2012 offseason and how Seattle could still consider a QB in the draft based on that history. Plus, is it a "lazy narrative" that the Seahawks need to address the offensive line? We have two final interviews to share from the 2025 Shrine Bowl. Kyonte Hamilton of Rutgers was a late invite to the game and is being touted as a late-round value pick. The big man on the interior sounds like he'd be a locker room fit for any team. He talks about how his wrestling experience plays into his game on the defensive line. Marcus Wehr of Montana State held his own against the top talent the Shrine Bowl had to offer. He talks about how he once got annoyed by the Idaho football team's inability to shower. We close the show with a discussion about our biggest draft day fear and whether or not we think John Schneider is more likely to trade up or to trade down. The availability of lumber and the hype around the Minecraft movie leading to the downfall of society are targeted in the Do Better Segment. Better at Life honors go to John Cena and WrestleMania for this past weekend and to Aaron Rodgers for toying with the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise these last couple months.
