Resolution's National Conference in 2026 kicked off with our keynote session looking at the impact of AI in the justice system, including the benefits of being able to deliver justice more efficiency and the risk of it perpetuating bias that exists in the system.   We wanted to find a topic that would give our audience lots to were privileged to be joined by The Honourable Mr Justice McKendrick and Professor Rosemary Hunter King Counsel (Lead author of the Harm Panel 2020 report and co-author of the Everyday Business report 2025).  Judge tells us that the Chancellor of the High Court, the Rt Hon Lord Justice Birss is the lead Judge for Artificial Intelligence, with an allocated senior for criminal, civil and family justice.  Mr Justice McKendrick is the lead judge for AI in family justice.   The Judge makes the point that AI is transforming society, and justice needs to keep up with that development.  The judiciary already has access to its own confidential AI system, and guidance was issued to the judiciary in October 2025: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Artificial-Intelligence-AI-Guidance-for-Judicial-Office-Holders-2.pdfThat system can summarise bundles, summarising judgments for litigants with special educational needs, AI to translate or transcript audio, as AI hallucination checker.  However, judicial decisions always remain the responsibility of the Judge. In the same way that the High Court judiciary already have access to a judicial assistant, but decisions are made by the Judge.  Rosemary explains that there are deliberate biases in the system which we all think is a good thing, for example the child's welfare being the paramount consideration is a form of bias.  The concern therefore only arises in respect of biases that give a party an unjustified disadvantage.  Rosemary gives example of the research in the Harm report about the ‘pro-contact culture', which is a form of bias.  Rosemary makes the point that over-reliance on AI could lead to jurisprudential ossification i.e. continuing to use the determination that is already available rather than responding to adapting views.  The Judge referred to a speech by The President of the King's Bench division https://www.judiciary.uk/speech-by-the-president-of-the-kings-bench-division-the-mayflower-lecture-2025/The difference between prediction and reasoning.  That lecture goes on to look at the fact that AI is predicting based on past outcomes, whereas Judges are reasoning.  Therefore, the Judge argues there is always a difference between the judicial outcome of reasoning to the outcome and AI predicting the likely outcome based on previous data.  We went on to consider a number of judicial lectures including: the Master of the Rolls speech on Artificial Intelligence where the Master of the Rolls opined that incivil justice routine judicial decision-making could be informed or directed by machines https://www.judiciary.uk/speech-by-the-master-of-the-rolls-artificial-intelligence-and-the-judiciary/Lord Briggs, Justice of the Supreme Court https://supremecourt.uk/uploads/speech_lord_briggs_20052026_de46afe657.pdfFinally, we concluded with a discussion about the debate in the House of Lords about the future of financial remedy law. https://hansard.parliament.uk/Lords/2025-11-10/debates/1492EA41-F82F-4148-A8AB-C0F8CB5B78B7/FinancialProvisionOnDivorce We conclude with wondering whether AI is going to fuel litigation and driving litigants to issue, or whether it will help litigants to find consensual solutions and remove unrealistic expectations, as yet it is impossible to know.

In this episode of ‘From the Editor's Desk,' Tom Fox visits with Aaron Nicodemus to discuss highlights from Compliance Week in May, review the National Conference, which concluded in May and take a look at what is coming down the pike in June in Compliance Week. They report that federal enforcement is not receding but shifting, with heightened risk from Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) designations affecting companies operating in Mexico, Latin America, and Brazil; increased and novel use of the False Claims Act, including actions targeting DEI programs, referencing IBM and PayPal settlements; and growing enforcement roles for states, FINRA, and divergent ESG regimes in the UK and Europe. Guidance to compliance leaders is to “stay the course,” strengthen third-party risk management, and document enhanced due diligence around potential FTO ties. They note AI discussions moving from governance frameworks toward scaling practical compliance use cases. June will feature “Inside the Mind of the CCO” survey results, DEI-related findings, and two webcasts. They also recognize former Compliance Week journalist Allie McDevitt's ASBE national Gold Award for her Lafarge series, which is cited as a roadmap for FTO-related risk, alongside DOJ messaging on self-reporting to seek declination. Regardless of whether it is via digital screens or printed pages, the act of reading remains a timeless and universal pursuit that has the ability to expand horizons, deepen understanding of the world, and foster empathy and compassion. In China, the government promotes reading as a means to build a more educated, innovative and morally cultivated society. To facilitate the act of reading, a government regulation on promoting nationwide reading, which took effect in February, sets out measures to improve reading facilities and services, reinforcing mechanisms to support reading initiatives. The designation of the fourth week of April as National Reading Week further underscores the government's commitment to fostering a culture of reading. During this week, events such as lectures, bookfairs, salons and book donations are being held across the country, encouraging people to engage with books and share the joy of reading. In an era dominated by digital screens and byte-sized information, the act of reading books stands as a testament to humanity's enduring quest for knowledge and understanding. Reading is more than a mere intellectual exercise; it is a gateway to new ideas, a bridge between cultures, and a tool for personal and societal development. The digital revolution has transformed the way we consume information, and reading is no exception. In China, 80.8 percent of adults now engage in digital reading through formats such as e-books, online literature, audiobooks and video-based summaries. This has made reading more accessible and convenient, attracting individuals who might not have the time or inclination to read physical books. Data from the fifth National Conference on Reading in China highlights a promising trend: the rapid growth of digital reading is fostering adult reading rates, which reached 82.3 percent last year, with the average number of books read per person per year climbing to 8.39. The growth of digital reading is reflected in the numbers: by the end of 2025, China's digital reading user base reached 689 million, up 2.95 percent from the previous year, while the total number of digital reading works exceeded 70 million. The market size of digital reading has nearly doubled over the past five years, growing to 59.48 billion yuan ($8.67 billion) from 30.25 billion yuan, indicating strong growth in both supply and demand. This surge is partly due to the evolution of online literature into the broader cultural industry, with content extending into offline experiences and interactive formats. President Xi Jinping has consistently emphasized the importance of reading as a cornerstone of personal and intellectual development. Reading can spark intellectual insight, instill lofty ideals, and nurture a sense of moral integrity, according to an article by Xi on promoting nationwide reading and building a book-loving society. The article, published on Thursday in this year's eighth issue of the Qiushi Journal, provides excerpts of Xi's discourses on reading from March 2013 to March 2025. The article says people should read widely and choose good books, drawing wisdom and nourishment from them. It adds that work pressures should not be used as an excuse to neglect learning, nor should learning be reduced to a mere formality just for show. The article also stresses that it is necessary to build a learning society where all people engage in lifelong learning, adding that Party members and officials should take the lead in reading and learning. Digital reading should be combined with traditional reading, the article says.Despite the rise of digital formats, there is something irreplaceable about holding a physical book, turning its pages, and experiencing the tactile joy of reading. And rather than quick consumption of digital information, printed books offer a unique opportunity for in-depth reading, a practice that is essential for personal growth, career success and moral cultivation. Recent surveys show that 45.9 percent of adults still prefer reading printed books, especially literary works, indicating a continued demand for immersive reading that allows individuals to engage fully with ideas, reflect on their meaning and apply them to their own lives. And as we look to a future increasingly influenced by artificial intelligence, reading takes on renewed importance as a touchstone to keep people grounded in the tangibilities of the world.

While many families were better off than before, the absence of a reading culture had led to excessive time spent on entertainment, and without college graduate role models, children hesitated to dream big. To improve the cultural climate, education is key, and building a library could be a concrete step forward," Zhou wrote in his WeChat public account."要改善文化风气,教育是关键,而建一座图书馆是实实在在能迈出的一步。"周庆贵在个人微信公众号中写道。"It should be a cultural space that can provide a wider spiritual world for children to elevate their confidence and broaden their vision, rather than a space for kids to finish their homework," Zhou said."它应该是一个文化空间,能为孩子们提供更广阔的精神世界,提升他们的自信心,开阔他们的眼界,而不仅仅是写作业的地方。"周庆贵说。He named the library Siyuan — which means "remember the source" in Chinese — after his alma mater's motto: "Drink water and remember the source; love your country and honor your school." His 70-year-old father manages the library as a volunteer. Retired teachers from nearby schools also help, organizing books, creating reading lists and guiding children. Over five years, the library has collected more than 20,000 volumes, from children's picture books to classics. Now the Siyuan Library serves as a study and reading space for over 30 people, and its visitor register has recorded more than 1,000 names. To attract more children, Zhou, now a teacher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, gives remote lessons on a regular basis. During winter and summer breaks, he returns to the village to discuss daily studies, college entrance exam goals and career planning. He also invites the university's alumni to give talks, and organizes exchange activities with key city middle schools. Gradually, Zhou has seen the library grow into a cherished learning space. In the beginning, bad habits such as littering were common. But he stressed that the library was meant to teach not only knowledge, but also moral values. Now, students tidy up before they leave. Furthermore, while village children pick up good study habits and confidence, their parents have also embraced a new habit — reading together with their children. Zhou took great pride when 14 village students entered universities in 2024. In 2025, that number rose to 34, making him even happier.2024年,村里有14名学生考上大学,这让周庆贵倍感自豪。 He plans to open two or three more branches in other villages, using the same principles — the libraries should genuinely help a large number of people, and access should always be free. I hope to use a platform like the Siyuan Library to leverage the power of the humanities to help drive economic and social progress," he said."我希望借助思源图书馆这样的平台,发挥人文的力量,助力推动经济和社会进步。"他说。Zhou's efforts are part of a broader national movement to promote reading and cultivate a book-loving society in China. In a letter to the First National Conference on Reading in April 2022, President Xi Jinping said: "Reading is an important avenue for humans to acquire knowledge, expand wisdom and cultivate virtues. It enlightens us and helps us aim high and stand upright. … I hope that all our children will have a habit of reading, enjoy reading and grow up in a healthy way. I wish all of our people are engaged in reading and contribute to an atmosphere where everyone loves reading, has good books to read and knows how to gain from reading."2022年4月,习近平主席在致首届全民阅读大会的贺信中指出:"阅读是人类获取知识、启智增慧、培养道德的重要途径,可以让人得到思想启发,树立崇高理想,涵养浩然之气。……希望孩子们养成阅读习惯,快乐阅读,健康成长;希望全社会都参与到阅读中来,形成爱读书、读好书、善读书的浓厚氛围。"For decades, China has been trying to provide an environment conducive to reading, including the promotion of reading among all people in the annual government work report for 13 consecutive years. And so, thanks to years of effort, a book-loving society is taking shape. Between 2012 and 2024, the overall reading rate among adult citizens in China rose steadily, from 76.3 percent to 82.1 percent, according to Xinhua News Agency. 82.1%。During the 2025 two sessions, the annual gatherings of the nation's top legislative and political advisory bodies, Xi pointed out that the "aroma of books" represents a desirable cultural atmosphere, and he called for fostering a book-loving society in which people read widely, choose good books and draw wisdom and nourishment from them. On Feb 1, a State Council regulation to promote reading among the public took effect. The regulation establishes the fourth week of April each year as "National Reading Week", with the first such week running from Monday to April 26 this year. In Beijing, the 2026 Spring Book Fair — the city's first large-scale cultural gathering centered around physical bookstores — kicked off on Saturday and will run through May 17. "This is the heart of the gospel. This is the center of history. This is God dying in our place." This message on Jesus's passage from Luke 23 was preached by Gary Millar at TGC's 2013 National Conference. When Jesus went to the cross, he was surrounded by weak, evil, and self-interested people. Yet he remained in control, steadfast in his trust of his father, all the way to death. His sacrifice is something we should never take for granted.  Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. McNair discusses his campaign, Syphilis in Pregnancy: The Role of Public Health Communication in Prevention, developed in response to rising congenital syphilis rates in New York and across the U.S.He explains how the initiative reframed messaging from “congenital syphilis” to “syphilis during pregnancy,” a plain-language shift designed to keep babies at the center of the conversation while empowering pregnant people to seek testing at key points: the first prenatal visit, the third trimester, and delivery. The campaign combined community listening sessions, provider education, and creative outreach strategies to build trust and engagement.McNair also shares practical communication insights for public health professionals, emphasizing the importance of community input, inclusive language, message testing, and clear, attainable calls to action that help people take charge of their health.Learn more about the campaign at https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/congenital_syphilis/

Steve Gantner, Elias Saltz, and Tina Montone attended the CURT National Conference in Orlando, Florida in early February 2026 and returned with a clear throughline from the conversations taking place across the conference. In this discussion with Dave Stutzman, they reflect on how AI, data centers, power infrastructure, and construction productivity are no longer separate topics, but deeply interconnected forces shaping the future of project delivery. As data centers continue to be built at unprecedented speed, demand for reliable, redundant power is rising just as quickly. At the same time, AI is emerging as a practical tool to improve construction productivity not by pushing crews to work faster, but by reducing rework, improving information flow, enhancing safety, and accelerating knowledge transfer across generations.Despite the momentum, significant challenges remain. Regulatory complexity, labor shortages, and long-term declines in U.S. construction productivity continue to strain the industry. A consistent theme throughout CURT was the need for earlier collaboration and better alignment of data across design, construction, and procurement as a pathway to reducing inefficiencies and building long-term industry resilience.Key TakeawaysIndustry Insight:AI, data centers, power availability, and construction productivity are no longer separate issues, they are part of a single, interdependent system shaping project delivery.Practice Takeaway:Productivity gains will come less from working faster and more from eliminating rework, improving information accuracy, and getting the right data to the right people earlier.Process Lesson:Early alignment of design, construction, and procurement data is essential to reducing RFIs, delays, and downstream inefficiencies.Risk or Opportunity:AI presents a significant opportunity to offset labor and productivity challenges, but only if paired with reliable power infrastructure and disciplined implementation.People & Culture:Technology will not replace experience; the real value lies in using AI to capture, transfer, and amplify human expertise across generations.

Later in the episode, we'll also hear from Dr. Michael Keller, Senior Pastor of Redeemer, Lincoln Square, about what it means to faithfully contextualize the gospel and why it's so important. He also gives us a preview of a book that arose from conversations between him and his dad, Pastor Tim Keller, before his death, as well as unpublished writings by Tim following his going to be with the Lord. Burke-Garcia discusses how health communicators can better support autonomy by designing messages that are more empathetic, relevant, and empowering, while still advancing population health goals. She also examines how emerging AI tools may help scale tailored, evidence-based messaging in ways that build trust and meet people where they are.Tune in for practical insights and a hopeful path forward for health communicators navigating an increasingly complex information environment.

EPISODE 663 - Tad Crawford - A Woman in the Wild - A revealing and memorable portrait of a woman boldly facing her demons in pursuit of a meaningful lifeTad Crawford is an author, attorney, and publisher. He grew up in the artists' colony of Woodstock, New York. Interested in writing both fiction and nonfiction, he majored in economics at Tufts College and graduated from Columbia Law School. After clerking for a judge on New York State's highest court, the Court of Appeals, Crawford worked for a small general law firm in New York City while writing and teaching writing and literature at the School of Visual Arts. Finding few resources to help artists deal with legal matters such as copyrights, the sale and licensing of art, gallery and publishing contracts, income taxes, moral rights, and estate planning, Crawford initiated a “Law and the Visual Artist” course at the School of Visual Arts and wrote Legal Guide for the Visual Artist. Legal Guide now has well over one hundred thousand copies in print and is in its sixth edition (co-authored with M.J. Bogatin).Crawford followed Legal Guide with numerous other books to help professionals in the creative disciplines. The Legal Affairs editor and a regular columnist for Communication Arts magazine, he also wrote for journals such as American Artist, Art in America, Confrontation, Family Circle, Glamour, Guernica, Harper's Bazaar, The Nation, and Writer's Digest. He served as general counsel for the Graphic Artists Guild, lobbied as legislative counsel for the Copyright Justice Coalition (which had many artists' groups as members),  and volunteered as Chairman of the Board for the Foundation for the Community of Artists. In addition to testifying before the Senate subcommittee on behalf of artists' rights, he drafted a package of state laws which he presented to the National Conference of State Legislatures. This presentation led to the enactment of laws favorable to artists in a number of states, including New York and California. The National Endowment for the Arts selected Crawford as a grant recipient to write on the topic of artists' rights. He also received the Graphic Artists Guild's Walter Hortens Distinguished Service Award. In 1989 Crawford founded Allworth Press to offer the practical information needed by creative professionals such as artists, photographers, designers, and authors. He knew firsthand the issues such creative people face each day and envisioned a spectrum of books to help them survive and grow professionally. Beyond these efforts for creative professionals, he also wrote The Secret Life of Money: Enduring Tales of Debt, Wealth, Happiness, Greed, and Charity; A Floating Life: A Novel; and On Wine-Dark Seas: A Novel of Odysseus and his Fatherless Son Telemachus.Allworth Press, which today has hundreds of titles in print, became an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing in 2011. "In the Process, I came to realize ... how nature in my own life had been such a healing force." - James Bonilla We wrap up season 11 with New York-born Puerto Rican writer and retired professor emeritus, James Bonilla. James's story is filled with transformation, healing, and wisdom. Born with congenital cataracts, at the age of nine, his right eye was injured in school by a fellow student's actions. For over ten years, James was blind. At the age of 19, doctors removed the cataracts (although the childhood injury remained). On his way home from the hospital, he remembers seeing the world in Technicolor through his own eyes. As a writer, James was comfortable writing about his identities as a Puerto Rican and a person with impaired sight. But it wasn't until he did the Process that he could accept his family's struggle with mental illness. He released patterns of shame that stemmed from his experiences of abandonment as a young child. In accepting his own mental illness, James found deeper healing of those issues through the power of nature. He realized that nature had been a constant source of healing throughout his life. Upon graduating, James felt called to share his experience healing mental illness with others. Because of his work at the Process, James emerged emboldened to share this experience in his new memoir, An Eye for An I. We hope you enjoy this inspiring conversation with James and Drew. We'll be back in early 2026 with season 12 of the Hoffman Podcast. Content Warning: This episode mentions suicide and includes intense emotional content and targeted racism. More about James Bonilla James Francisco Bonilla is a New York-born Puerto Rican writer and retired professor emeritus of cultural competence and leadership at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. James was born with congenital cataracts and has never had sight in his left eye. Following a racially-motivated assault at age nine, he lost much of his remaining sight in the right eye. Ten years later, a medical breakthrough restored sight to his right eye. Seeking relief and inspiration, he found unexpected solace in the natural world. This discovery led him toward both personal healing and advocacy work. Due to his experiences, James was drawn into the early disability rights movement and community organizing. This helped shape his work as a nationally recognized social justice educator and environmentalist. James received his doctoral degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, School of Education in Organizational Leadership. He is a former Chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee to the National Conference on Racial & Ethnic Diversity in American Higher Education. He has made hundreds of presentations to universities, conferences, and human service organizations in the area of diversity, including outdoor education and environmental programs. His memoir, An Eye for An I: Growing Up With Blindness, Bigotry, and Family Mental Illness, was just released by the University of Minnesota Press. In it, he invites readers to empathize and consider their own potential to be of service in a broken, yet beautiful world. Read more about James' memoir on Hamline University's site. On November 5th, a judge in Malaysia will deliver a verdict in the case of Susanna Koh vs. the Malaysian government and members of the police believed to be involved in the abduction of her husband, Pastor Raymond Koh. Raymond disappeared off the streets of Malaysia in 2017; he hasn't been seen or heard from since, and his car has never been found. Susanna and her children shared their story at The Voice of the Martyrs' National Conference in September. They are asking Christians around the world to pray ahead of this important court verdict. Susanna shared how she sees, in hindsight, that God was preparing Raymond ahead of his abduction. He was memorizing large sections of Scripture, taking long prayer walks, and even driving around Malaysia to pray for God's Spirit to move in different areas. After he was abducted, Susanna went to the police station to file a missing person's report. Instead of asking questions designed to locate Pastor Raymond, police interrogated Susanna. They demanded information about her husband's ministry activities and accused him of evangelizing ethnic Malay people. In the days since the abduction, God has used Christian music, prayer, and Scripture to encourage her, even though there were times she was angry with the police who repeatedly interrogated her. One day, she was convicted of her anger and unforgiveness towards the police; she repented for her sin. Susanna will share how the Lord led her to go the extra mile to demonstrate forgiveness for her husband's persecutors. Susanna and her family filed a civil case against the Malaysian government and the police in 2020. Listen as she shares how she sought the Lord ahead of filing the case and how the Lord confirmed her decision to move forward. Not knowing what happened to Pastor Raymond has been hard for Susanna and her family, freezing their grief. "The unknown is a struggle," Susanna said, "but we will go into the court with an attitude of victory, because Jesus has already won through His blood on the cross." She also takes joy in knowing that Raymond's story of faithfulness has gone around the world and encouraged many Christians. You'll also hear from Raymond and Susanna's children, Esther, Jonathan, and Elizabeth, as they share their struggles and share memories of their father. You can watch a special video podcast of this interview at www.vom.org/koh. Pray for the verdict coming up on November 5th. Pray for the judge.
