The hiatus continues... In case you missed the memo, we are taking a short break from uploading new episodes over the summer. I'm away, you're away... seems like a good time for it. But the podcast will be back with a bang on the 26th of September with new guests for your ears. In the meantime, I wanted to dip into the back catalogue and share an episode that you might not have heard if you only joined us recently. This one is the lovely Chris Neill, and it's one of my absolute favourites. I think most people may not know Chris as he mainly works as a producer, but he's also a brilliant comic and his Radio 4 series about meeting his husband is just joyous. This conversation is just a brilliant rollercoaster of emotion - from growing up gay in the 80s, to the lure of accountants, oboists and pen and ink drawings. Hope you like it! Lots of summery love, Margaret xx Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Writer performer Chris Neill talks about growing up gay in the 1980s; the lure of accountants, oboeists and pen and ink drawings.

Joining Tom Jackson - recorded in the golden, faraway days before lockdown - to discuss the postcards from their pasts are comedian and writer CHRIS NEILL (Woof) and novelist STEPHANIE BUTLAND (Lost For Words, The Woman in the Photograph). We cycle from Lands End to a broken tentpole, ponder the mystery floodlights of Ealing, and Unseen Weybridge, as well as Snow White, Auntie Hastings and a poet laureate. Wish you were here? In this third series, Chris Neill continues his comedic exploration of affairs of the heart, the unexpected humiliations of ageing, and what bloody good luck it is that he has met his boyfriend, Rory. In earlier series, episodes revolved around the terrible blind date Chris was set up on, his fantasy French boyfriend inspired by a school textbook, making a fish pie for his dying neighbour, and his failure to write a novel. As ever, Chris remains entirely willing to expose himself to a late-night, possibly bed-bound, audience and this third series of Woof finds him recounting more autobiographical stories of his life in love, lust and mediocrity. In the first episode, we examine the trials of ageing. After a telephone conversation with his doctor, taken while admiring the sheer capacity of the Haribo aisle in a Hamburg supermarket, we join Chris walking away from diabetes. Lucy is picking up high level BBC intelligence from secret drops in Epping Forest whilst she is recording Walky Talky. These drops includes this week’s DumTeeDum from Doha. Lucy then gets the order of the podcast wrong (twice) this week and Roifield leaves her apparent confusion in the final version. 20 year listener comedian Chris Neill then keeps Lucy in painful stitches (she had just been to pilates) for some 20 minutes as they discuss the ins and outs of our favourite programme. Chris first remembers listening to the death of John Archer. If he joined the cast Chris would like to live with the Grundys at Grange Farm and have a go on Tom should the opportunity arise. For the record Sean’s partner at the Cat and Fiddle was called Peter. Lucy then did the Bartleby not Joe joke! She then explains the Archer family tree to Chris as they are all related really, but they get sidelined over Peggy. I think I should confirm that Jack and Phil Archer were brothers, which is how they are all related. Anthea... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this month's show, Steve Gribbin provides the music while James O'Brien and guests Daphna Baram, Don Biswas, Matt Forde and Chris Neill discuss amongst other things, the Middle East, Tony Blair, UKIP, Manchester United, and the Royal Family. See if you can guess which subject tops the unpopularity table, and which one provokes Mr O'Brien into temporarily abandoning impartiality.
Kimberly Clark, Jasper Redd, Danielle Ward and Chris Neill all join Dave Holmes for our stupid transatlantic pop-culture quiz.
This month on No Pressure To Be Funny, guest host Kevin Day wrangles a formidable array of talent whilst trying to be nice about The Great British Bake Off. The Guardian's Polly Toynbee definitely says pleb, Alex Andreou dares to suggest re-nationalising energy companies, and Chris Neill extolls the virtues of Lidl to Marcus Brigstocke, who's never been to one, obviously. Nick Revell gives Facebook a (be)heads up, Alistair Barrie wears a lot of jumpers and Jonny and the Baptists manage to both join UKIP and serenade Angela Merkel, all recorded in the storm-proof basement of Soho Theatre.
This month, firebrand of the left Owen Jones denies a love tryst with Tory donor and disgraced former party chairman Lord Ashcroft; Helen Lewis sets James O'Brien straight about the New Statesman's relationship with the Labour Party, Keith Farnan suggests a poetic yet viciously vengeful fate for Tony Blair, and Chris Neill is extremely rude about Pippa Middleton. Plus music from Jonny and the Baptists, and monologues from Nick Revell.
Dan Tetsell and Chris Neill get on board for Episode 3. The show features Festivals, Sharks and Whoopee Cushions and someone reveals their alter ego as Uncle Finger. Plus Wine Expert Andy gives his opinions on Blue Wine. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Tim Hayward offers his reflections on the past, present and future of the British breakfast. Has the first meal of the day become a problem to solve rather than a pleasure?Joined by food writer and breakfast historian Seb Emina, Tim finds out how the great British breakfast became the envy of the world. With its origins dating back to aristocratic Edwardian country houses, the cooked breakfast spread through the chop houses of working class London and beyond. But with the huge amount of breakfast choices now available and our increasingly busy lives, eating breakfast has become an increasingly diverse and fragmented food experience. For some breakfast is an exercise in "grab-and-go" and indulging in more of a "desk-fast" than a meal, but there are some other interesting trends underway; sales of the big name cereal brands have been falling, porridge sales have been making something of a comeback. For an insight into this trend, Tim meets Nick Barnard of Rude Health, one of the more recent players on the breakfast scene competing for our morning appetite. With the help of food writer Anna Berrill, Tim finds out how, for some, the traditional breakfast is becoming more of a whole social occasion. Writer and comedian Chris Neill explains his own personal problem with breakfast and we learn how the so called "third wave" coffee scene is a growing influence on our mornings.Producer: George Casey.
Tim Hayward and The Food Quiz team juggle more food history, trivia and recipe knowledge in pursuit of fun and gastronomic curiosity.Recorded in front of a live audience at The Abergavenny Food Festival this special edition of the Radio 4 Food Quiz features panellists comedian Chris Neill, food writer Richard Johnson, television presenter Gizzi Erskine and restaurant insider Thomas Blythe. This week's quiz categories include, "beer or racehorse" and "what's cookin'" as well as more from inside "the museum of brands". Producer: Dan Saladino.
Nowhere else will you find a programme that juggles Elvis Presley's culinary history, questions over the origins of a 1970's crisp brand, references to Elizabeth David and some of the world's most unusual food sounds. Food writer Tim Hayward performs this feat in a special Christmas Day edition of The Food Quiz. Panellists Allegra McEvady, Richard Johnson and Chris Neill pit their gastronomic knowledge, grasp of food trivia and culinary history against each other. Categories include the devious "Into the Museum of Brands", a cult cookbook round as well as "What's Cookin'?" in which the teams have to identify a classic dish from the archives.Producer: Dan Saladino.
James O'Brien is joined by Australian comic Sarah Kendall, Cutting Edge regular Steve Gribbin, Just A Minute regular Chris Neill, and New Statesman journalist Helen Lewis-Hasteley.
