Sugar isn't just empty calories – it's an active driver of disease through a fascinating biological mechanism that evolved to help mammals survive food scarcity. In this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Richard Johnson, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and author of "Why Nature Wants Us to Be Fat," we explore the unexpected ways fructose hijacks our metabolism.Dr. Johnson, often described as the "Indiana Jones of nutrition science," reveals how fructose works by actually depleting cellular energy rather than increasing it. This creates a paradoxical situation where our bodies store more fat while simultaneously making us feel exhausted and constantly hungry. The biological pathway, designed to help animals like bears fatten up before hibernation, now works against us in our sugar-saturated world. Most alarming are the connections between fructose metabolism and serious diseases. Cancer cells specifically seek out fructose to fuel their growth in low-oxygen environments, explaining why certain cancers are strongly associated with high sugar consumption. Even more compelling is the evidence linking fructose to dementia – from the earliest stages of cognitive decline showing the exact biological signature of fructose metabolism to animal studies demonstrating memory impairment after just two weeks of sugar exposure.Perhaps most surprising is Dr. Johnson's revelation that our bodies can manufacture fructose internally, especially during mild dehydration or when consuming salty foods. This explains why the combination of salt and carbohydrates is particularly problematic for weight management – they signal our bodies to convert glucose to fructose and store fat.The good news? Understanding this pathway opens doors to protection through specific nutrients like omega-3s and vitamin C, and explains why low-carbohydrate approaches can be so effective. Whether you're concerned about weight, cognitive health, or cancer prevention, this conversation offers practical insights into breaking free from sugar's powerful grip on your metabolism.Enjoyed this episode? This is a repost of the most listened to podcast with Richard J. Johnson, M.D.. Dr. Johnson is the Tomas Berl Professor of Medicine and the Chief of the Renal Division and Hypertension at the University of Colorado since 2008. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with a major in Anthropology, and a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Minneapolis, he is a physician and nephrologist whose research has focused on the role of sugar, and especially fructose, in driving obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and kidney disease. Much of this work has explored the role of fructose metabolism, especially the generation of uric acid, in driving this phenotype, and his work has included studies ranging from molecular biology, integrative physiology, and evolutionary biology. He is the author of The Sugar Fix which introduced the first low fructose diet, and also The Fat Switch which explores the role of fructose in driving the obesity epidemic. His newest book, Nature Wants Us To Be Fat, is a tour de force of the entire pathway of survival via metabolic events in the body related to fructose and the polyol pathway. This is a must read book. This podcast will introduce you to the exceptional work of Dr. Johnson and how we are now mismatched metabolically for the environment of modern America and our food systems. Please enjoy this wide ranging conversation. Dr. M

Alex Kirshner, Richard Johnson, and Steven Godfrey discuss the stories they are most interested to watch unfold between now and September. In this show: * Podcast update: Godfrey is becoming host emeritus and will take a lighter load as he works on other things, but you'll still hear him on SZD regularly. * Richard is tracking a series of potential changes to the postseason and end-of-season schedule, not just (more) playoff expansion but also all the SEC/Big Ten saber-rattling that will accompany it. Plus potential changes to the transfer portal schedule and a resolution of the ACC's drama. * Godfrey will follow the SEC's attempts to keep internal order now that it's ballooned to a huge size, some teams have missed the first 12-team playoff narrowly, and the “eight vs. nine conference games” debate remains open. * Alex has his eye on the House settlement, which most people in college sports believe will get final approval and go into effect this year. For the first time ever, after years of toothless hearings, the federal government will have no choice but to get actively involved in college sports reforms.* Arch Madness prepares to take full hold at Texas* Penn State, preseason No. 1? * USC's crucial summer of getting its house in order For Split Zone Duo subscribers this weekProducer: Anthony Vito This is a public episode. Alzheimer's is now being called “type 3 diabetes” for its link to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and obesity. PREVENT ALZHEIMER"S (Free Guide): https://www.theprimal.com/lab/the-true-cause-of-alzheimers-disease-dementia A new hypothesis suggests another potential mechanism at play, one involving fructose. Today, fructose is consumed mainly in highly concentrated forms such as fruit juice, dried fruit, and high fructose corn syrup in soda and ultra-processed foods. According to metabolic health and Alzheimer's scientists, this abundance of fructose in our modern diet may be starving our brain's memory center due to a genetic survival trait. Rina sits down with Dr. Richard Johnson to discuss his revolutionary new hypothesis on the link between fructose consumption and Alzheimer's disease. Rina and Dr. Johnson discuss the evolutionary mechanism behind fructose metabolism, insulin resistance, and weight gain that has completely backfired today due to its overconsumption. Dr. Richard Johnson is a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Denver and has been a practicing physician and clinical scientist for over 25 years. He is internationally recognized for his seminal work on the role of fructose in obesity, diabetes, and now, Alzheimer's disease.

We've all heard the advice that when you buy new clothes you should wash them first before you wear them. But what's the reason? Is it more of a “just to be safe” idea or is there a real concern? This episode begins with an explanation.https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2010/11/wash-and-then-wear-unwashed-clothes-may-have-formaldehyde/index.htm Understanding the science of weight loss has come a long way in just the past several years. It isn't just, “eat fewer calories than you burn.” There is a lot more to it than that. If you want to know the latest cutting-edge advice on losing weight and keeping it off, listen to my guest, Dr. Richard Johnson, who is at the forefront of research on obesity and diabetes. He is he is a medical doctor, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado and author of the book, Why Nature Wants Us to Be Fat – The Surprising Science Behind Why We Gain Weight and How We Can Prevent – and Reverse It. (https://amzn.to/3tXHbCF). You often hear business gurus talk about how important it is to make your business idea scalable. What does that mean? How do you make something scalable? It seems like many ideas are simply not scalable. And if an idea isn't scalable, can it still be great? John List is an economist (formerly with Lyft) who explains how ideas scale – or don't. He also explains how great businesses know how to pivot to stay competitive. John is author of the book The Voltage Effect: How to Make Good Ideas Great and Great Ideas Scale (https://amzn.to/3K3cCkT). Listen as he reveals some great examples of ideas that could and could not scale and how he helped Lyft scale their business. Usually, you smile because you are happy.
