"I feel like the joy in motherhood, or really any relationship, kind of ebbs and flows. Some weeks it all feels so happy and easy. Then other weeks it feels like motherhood is hard. In the hard weeks, my kids start to feel like so much work. I almost view them as these big obstacles in my way that I have to use all my strength to pick up and move all day long. It becomes so exhausting. I was in a week like that one time and realized that I truly wasn't looking at my children as relationships, as my little buddies, as humans. I was looking at them as a job, as just a lot of hard work. I was thinking motherhood is hard work. I needed to fall back in love with them.  So now in the hard weeks sometimes I do let myself sit in the "this is hard" for a while; but then when I am done with my pity party, I decide to fall back in love with my kids, and I have come up with some really simple strategies that help me do that.” Three Takeaways (for when motherhood is hard)  "Practice" the love you want to feel for each child through a two-minute meditation. Savor it. Take a sensory snapshot in the midst of a perfect moment. Tell your kids you love them in the moments you feel it the least.   Key Points & Quotes from this episode: Especially when motherhood is hard and I may feel a little or a lot “depressed” with it all, I sit in silence with affirmations and visualization every day.   Motherhood can feel very one-sided on the long days….you doing all the giving, with not much receiving.   Even when motherhood is hard, I have found that when I notice the ways my children are loving me back, I feel that energy and happiness a lot more effortlessly.   When I am really feeling out of sorts emotionally it can feel really hard to even find the energy to “savor” something so instead when motherhood is hard, I simply “Notice it”  Full Transcript For a full transcript of the episode, click here (https://3in30podcast.com/?p=3981&preview=true) . Announcement! This is the last week to get the Early Bird pricing on my spring Declutter your Motherhood workshops. This is a full-day workshop to help you love the job of motherhood as much as you love your children. We all LOVE our children fiercely, right?? So why it is so hard to love the daily grind of motherhood--the day-in-and-day-out realities of it?  I've taken the very best of what I've learned from professional counselors and the 100+ guests I've interviewed on my podcast, and put it all into the Declutter Your Motherhood workshop. We will spend a full day together walking through a three-step process to declutter your motherhood, just like you would declutter a closet, and you will walk away with a written, personalized action plan for how you will find more joy in your unique motherhood. Does your daily schedule feel deeply fulfilling, or do you often feel like life is a bit of a runaway train? Are your authentic values reflected by how you spend your time, or are your days filled up with things you've said yes to just because you felt that you "should"? Today's episode on how to declutter your schedule is for any mother who is searching for more intention, clarity, and calm in her day-to-day life. For the past few months, I’ve been working on a special project behind-the-scenes: a private coaching program for women who have attended a Declutter Your Motherhood workshop (3in30podcast.com/workshops) . I am currently working with 18 women, and we meet virtually once a week to explore topics of decluttering our mindsets and our lives. In December, our group had a private masterclass with podcaster (https://livefreecreative.co/podcast/) who specializes in decluttering your home AND your life so you can design a life of intention. Truly, I don’t know anyone in this world who lives with more intention than Miranda. This episode is an excerpt from her masterclass where she shares 3 takeaways to declutter your daily schedule. Let’s dig in!  Three Takeaways on How to Declutter Your Schedule: 1) Remember, everything is optional. 2) Time is a cycle, and it's important to respect your seasons. 3) Put the "big rocks" in first every day--and remember that one of the big rocks is YOU.   Quotes from this episode: "It was the first time I realized that life isn't just about always adding more and more and more. At some point, I needed to actually make decisions and not just choose everything. I had to choose what was not going to fit in my life." "As humans, we want to do what's comfortable, even if it's not working. We will opt to do the things that we're already doing because we know what the outcomes are and not knowing the outcome is scary enough that it keeps us from making changes. But if we make changes, that is the only way to understand what we're actually capable of." "I think if you allow yourself to consider that every single thing on your schedule is optional, you are immediately able to feel some freedom. You clear everything off of your schedule and you decide what actually adds value." "I think that we owe it to ourselves to understand that we can say no, we can clear things off, we can discontinue things that we've been doing for a long time." "We often want to just replicate this ideal of what we think we should be accomplishing, doing, feeling. And if we have a little bit of perspective on the seasons and the cycles of time, we know that, it's just all going to flow back around, and that where we are right now is just right." "What do you want your life to feel like? Think about the feeling that you want in your life, and then build a life around that feeling." Aside from the things you need to do and the things you think you should do, what do you actually want to do? Take a dance class? Meal plan? Interior design? Create a new spreadsheet? Catch up on your journal?  Today I have my childhood best friend, Elizabeth Bergeland, a stay-at-home mother AND a professional artist, and Ben Brashares, a stay-at-home father AND an author, on the show to talk about holding space for creativity in your life. Despite their busy schedules, they continuously chip away at working within their creative fields. Together they recently published a beautiful book called Being Edie is Hard Today.  Separate from your work status and the things that keep you busy as a parent, here are three things Elizabeth Bergeland suggests to help you hold space for your creativity as a parent:  Manage your expectations. Is there a way that I can still do this but in a medium or method that’s more conducive to family life?  Carve out a designated time and space for your creativity. Make sure it fits you and your unique creative personality.  Find ways to hold yourself accountable to your creativity. Close your eyes and envision your ideal morning with your children. Would you get up before them or wait for them to crawl into bed with you? What routines would you have in place to limit chaos and contention? Now work backwards and envision, step-by-step, what you would need to do the night before in order to make your ideal morning a possibility. If this seems like a far off dream, I get it. Mornings are some of the hardest times in our house (and I am too embarrassed to tell you how many tardies my son had last school year!). But today's guest has given me hope that our home and our routines can be much more organized this year! Mika Perry is a former professional organizer turned podcaster, lifestyle blogger, and organization expert. And yes this is thee Mika Perry, with whom I am hosting the Declutter Your Motherhood workshop in Gilbert, Arizona on September 21st! Here are Mika's 3 takeaways for how to organize yourself and your home for the new school year: Create calm mornings with a solid night routine. Implement simple solutions for all the paper - and you’re still a great mom if you throw it away. When you think about the small but impactful acts of kindness others have shown you, do you also reflect on the kindness *you* have shown others? It might be humbling to admit, but ways YOU have reached out have made a big difference to others as well. I claim that with confidence because today on the podcast, I'm talking about how to change someone's life and sharing a story of a simple handshake and how it changed the life of someone I know. This episode is an excerpt from a guest interview that I did on the podcast Becoming for Teens with co-hosts Erica Peterson and Tawni Beardall (our guests from last week's episode, Overcoming Your Inner Teen). This special story from my life seemed like a great followup to Teen Month, but this episode isn't just for parents! Will you do me a favor and listen to this with your teen? (Or preteen!) From my experience befriending Brian and shaking his hand, I learned: Look around and notice. When you're in a group of people, stop for a second. Then scan the room and ask yourself: Is there somebody here who could use a little friendship right now? Initiate that first gesture, even if it's scary or forced. A really small act of kindness is enough. Show Notes: Instagram: @becoming_for_teens Website: Becoming For Teens -ARIZONA, I’m coming your way! As a teen, did you ever find yourself giving up parts of who you were in order to fit in and feel accepted? Would you be able to admit, or even recognize, if you were still doing that as a mom? In this phase of our lives, we aren't always put in peer pressure situations where our values are directly questioned by others, but managing our own expectations of who we think we "should" be and comparing our family to other families creates walls that limit us. Tawni Beardall and Erica Peterson are the co-hosts of a podcast for teens called Becoming. Tawni and Erica have become my real-life friends, and they hosted my first-ever Declutter Your Motherhood workshop. I absolutely love these ladies, and am so grateful for the work they are doing. In this episode, they point out three ways that we are a lot like the teenagers in our lives and give suggestions for how we can "overcome our inner teen": Have a threshold of zero. Do what is right (and right for you) no matter how many people are doing something different. Do work. We resist hard work for ourselves AND for our kids. And as human beings, we truly need the blessings of work. Make and keep friends. Our need for close friendships does not end after high school! Prioritize it, put yourself out there, and use people's names. Let's imagine that you have a friend who, every time you get together, tells you all the things that she doesn't like about you and that she hopes you will change. Would you want to spend time with that friend or open up to her? Unfortunately, this is the basis of a lot of our interactions with our children, especially as they reach the teen years. We feel such great responsibility to teach them that we fail to see their progress and just focus on everything we want them to change. Brooke Romney (a returning guest from Episode 19, "How to Be a Friend Instead of Just Being Friendly") is an expert in prioritizing connection in our relationships. Today she's going to be teaching us how to talk *with* our teenagers instead of *at* them: Lecture less and listen more. Concentrate on seeing their good and compliment them; get excited about the things they are excited about; validate what they are going through.  Elevate your conversation. Instead of asking, “How was your day?”, get comfortable with tackling real-world issues that feel relevant and important to them.  Hold the judgment (of them and others). When you show grace with the faults of others, your kids realize you’ll show grace with their faults as well. One of Mika's favorite podcasts to listen to is 3 in 30, a 30-minute show for busy moms with 3 clear cut takeaways (or what Mika calls "knowledge bombs") on parenting struggles and strategies. Mika was a guest on Rachel's show not too long ago, and now we are welcoming her to Good To Be Home! What Mika admires most about this show is Rachel's ability and willingness to go deep on topics that may not be tackled on other shows, like what to do when you don't like playing with your kids, how religion can affect your ideas of what a mom should be or how Rachel is happier as a mom when she is still working. An English teacher turned mom turned podcaster, Rachel now has over 80 episodes of 3 in 30 aiming to help moms "manage the madness and maximize the magic of motherhood." Mika and Rachel discuss 3 of Mika's favorite episodes of 3 in 30, how to bring more positivity into your social media feeds, and how to deal with that inner critic that always seems to be nagging inside. --- SIGN UP for Mika and Rachel's one day workshop "Declutter Your Motherhood" on Saturday, September 21st in Phoenix, Arizona! In this stage of my life, I start most days to the sound of my children calling for me or running into my room. Before that, I started the day with the sound of my alarm clock signaling I needed to hurry as fast as I possibly could to get ready for work. This often sets the pace to go from one thing to the next in a frazzled state when I am constantly craving slow. Crystal Paine, entrepreneur, mom, and founder of Money Saving Mom, is often asked how she does what she does, and it all comes down to starting her day with intention. Crystal has years of experience encouraging women to be intentional when it comes to finance, family, and business. In this episode, she encourages us to develop the habit of serving our tomorrow self by first asking the question: What can you do the night before to set yourself up for success the next day?
