This week, I welcome researchers Hana Milanov and Amelie Pahl on their work exploring entrepreneurship through the lens of first-time parents. The researchers interviewed founders who were already deeply identified with their "venture baby" before having a "biological baby," challenging the common narrative that parenthood diminishes career success. They discovered that instead of being a hindrance, parenthood can be a catalyst for positive change in a founder's business and their professional growth. The key finding revolves around two main strategies founders adopt: Founder Firewalling: Keeping the parental and founder roles separate to protect the founder's professional identity and commitment. This often drives professionalization, like delegating or hiring management, to maintain separation. Founder Fusing: Integrating the two roles by allowing the new values and behaviors learned as a parent (like empathy and patience) to redefine and enhance the founder's role. This often leads to a more flexible and human-centered workplace culture. The surprising takeaway? The decision to integrate or separate was not defined by gender but by the individual's approach, with roughly a 50/50 split between the two strategies in their study of high-impact founders.

What if renewing your mind isn't just spiritual advice—it's actual brain training? In this episode, we explore how attention shapes affection, and how the difference between affections and addictions determines whether your family is being transformed or simply managed into conforming to the patterns of this world. We're introducing Dr. Lee Warren's groundbreaking work on faith and neuroscience (stay tuned for our full interview with him next month), and discovering how Philippians 4:8 is God's prescription for mental health—not toxic positivity, but actual neural formation. This changes everything about how we understand transformation in families. This is the second episode in our Season 7 alphabet series: A is for Affections, Not Addictions. Today we're learning to curate a life that builds affections instead of addictions—and discovering that most families are stuck in a perform/binge cycle that creates neither security nor transformation. In This Episode, You'll Discover: Why Philippians 4:8 is brain training, not just moral advice—and how attention literally rewires your nervous system The core distinction: "Affections form you through love. Addictions manage you through substitutes for love." How affections grow in families where needs are welcomed and met through relationship—and how addictions grow where needs are managed in isolation Why addictions aren't moral failures or lack of willpower—they're brilliant survival strategies that come at a cost What it actually looks like to live life together without an agenda (and why this is easier than it sounds) How trauma bonds form even in "good Christian families" through performance-based relating Dr. Lee Warren's powerful framework: "You cannot control every thought that enters your mind, but you can choose which ones you rehearse and build a home for." Three practical steps to shift from addictions to affections this week Quotable Moments "Attention is not passive. What we give our attention to is actively shaping our brains. Attention drives neuroplasticity."   "The atmosphere matters more than the activity. In a transformational home, no one is keeping score. No one is earning approval. Everyone contributes from identity, not from fear." "When you're together in that relaxed, no-pressure environment, your child will often let you meet their needs. They'll ask questions. They'll share what's going on in their heart—because they feel safe." "What you attend to becomes what you believe. What you believe becomes how you interpret reality. And how you interpret reality shapes your nervous system and your relationships." Three Takeaways 1. Notice what you're giving your attention to. This week, pay attention to what you're rehearsing in your mind. Because what you rehearse becomes what you believe. What you believe shapes how you interpret reality. And how you interpret reality shapes your nervous system and your relationships. Ask yourself: What thoughts am I building a home for? What am I giving my attention to during the day? Is it life-giving or life-draining? Is it transforming me or conforming me? Just notice. Don't judge yourself. Just see it clearly. Awareness is the first step. 2. Choose one activity to do together without an agenda. This week, choose one activity and do it without an agenda. No pressure. No performance. No goal except to be present. Maybe it's cooking a meal together, going for a walk, working on something in the garage, reading aloud, or playing a board game. The point isn't what you do—it's that you're together, and no one has to earn approval or manage anyone else's emotions. Notice what happens when you're just together. This is where affections are built. 3. Ask yourself: "What am I bonding with?" This is the question we asked in Episode #127, and it's one we need to keep coming back to. What are you bonding with? What's influencing you? What are you forming affections with? Are you bonding with habits, ideas, routines, and people who are life-giving—or demanding? Because what you bond with shapes you. So choose wisely. Transformation happens when we intentionally curate a life that forms affections rather than feeds addictions. Resources Mentioned Episode #127: "A is for Affections" (our first exploration of this topic) Dr. Lee Warren's work on faith and neuroscience (full interview coming next month!) Elaine calls it The Quiet Way — a path of self-discovery that doesn't rely on striving harder, but instead on slowing down, tuning in, and trusting the guidance we all carry within. Through her own journey of transformation, she has learned that the answers we seek are often found in the pauses, not the noise. During this powerful conversation, Elaine shares how modern women can create space for mindfulness, balance, and clarity, even in the middle of life's busyness. She explains how embracing stillness allows us to reconnect with our authentic selves, uncover our true purpose, and make decisions with confidence. Together, Janeen and Elaine explore why learning to “trust what you hear” is the first step to living your healthiest and best life right now. It's not about waiting for the perfect conditions or pushing harder—it's about alignment. When body, heart, mind, and spirit work in harmony, life naturally unfolds with more ease and fulfillment. Whether you are looking to reduce stress, improve emotional well-being, or simply reconnect with your feminine creativity, this episode is a reminder that transformation doesn't have to be loud or dramatic. Sometimes, the quietest steps lead to the most powerful breakthroughs. Three Takeaways from Elaine: Go to the labyrinth — Create intentional space for stillness and reflection. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Dr. Ashley Finley, Vice President of Research and Senior Advisor to the President at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), about the findings of the 2025 AAC&U Employer Survey and what they reveal about employer expectations for higher education. Based on nearly 20 years of longitudinal research, the 2025 survey challenges many of the dominant public narratives about the value of college. Employers continue to express strong confidence in higher education, place equal importance on workforce preparation and citizenship, and increasingly emphasize adaptability, judgment, and civic capacity as core professional requirements. Dr. Finley explains how employers view civic skills as workplace competencies, why mindsets and dispositions are now baseline expectations rather than "soft skills," and how AI is reshaping what it means to be prepared for an uncertain future. The conversation also addresses generational differences among employers, the growing role of microcredentials, and why institutions must model the agility they expect from graduates. This episode is especially relevant for presidents, trustees, provosts, and senior leaders navigating political pressure, workforce alignment, and questions about institutional value. Topics Covered: What the 2025 AAC&U Employer Survey reveals that public narratives often miss Why employers see preparing informed citizens and a skilled workforce as inseparable goals How civic skills, including constructive disagreement, translate directly to workplace success Why motivation, resilience, initiative, and self-awareness are now baseline hiring expectations How employers think about AI readiness beyond simple tool proficiency Which student experiences increase hiring likelihood beyond internships How employers evaluate the credibility and value of microcredentials and certificates Generational shifts in employer expectations and what they signal for the future Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards: Institutions must communicate learning outcomes more clearly, including mindsets and dispositions, so students can articulate who they are becoming, not just what they know. Career-relevant experiences extend far beyond internships; leadership roles, campus employment, and community engagement carry significant employer value and are often more scalable. Agility must be modeled institutionally. Employers value adaptability, and colleges and universities cannot promote it in students while resisting change themselves. Bonus Takeaway from Dr. McNaughton: Employers continue to value higher education and the four-year degree, despite political rhetoric and cost-driven narratives suggesting otherwise. This disconnect presents both a risk and an opportunity for institutional leaders. This conversation offers data-grounded insight into how employers actually view higher education—and what leaders can do to align strategy, communication, and culture with those expectations. Are you parenting a teen in a world that feels far more complex than the one you grew up in? What if understanding the adolescent brain could actually help your teen not just survive—but truly thrive? Today's teens and young adults are growing up on a very different bridge to adulthood than previous generations. In this powerful and hopeful conversation, Colleen O'Grady sits down with Lisa M. Lawson, President and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation and author of Thrive: How the Science of the Adolescent Brain Helps Us Imagine a Better Future for All Children. Together, they explore how adolescent brain science—now understood to extend into the mid-20s—can transform the way parents guide, support, and relate to their teens. Lisa invites us to see teens through a lens of possibility rather than problems and introduces five essential “cables” that hold up the bridge of adolescence, from connection and education to financial stability and youth leadership. This episode is both deeply reassuring and incredibly practical for moms who want to widen the bridge for their teens and help them grow into resilient, confident adults. Lisa M. Lawson is the President and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, where she leads national efforts to improve outcomes for children, youth, and families. Since stepping into the role in 2019, she has championed bold initiatives such as Thrive by 25, focusing on the wellbeing of Generation Z ages 14–24. Prior to becoming CEO, Lisa served as Executive Vice President and Chief Program Officer overseeing all grantmaking strategies, and as Vice President of External Affairs, where she led development of the KIDS COUNT Data Book. Before joining the foundation, she spent 14 years at UPS in senior leadership roles, including President of the UPS Foundation. She is also the author of Thrive, a hopeful and science-based guide to understanding adolescence. ⭐ Three Takeaways for Moms Teen behavior isn't defiance—it's development. Impulsivity, emotional intensity, and peer influence are signs of a brain under construction, not bad character. Parents often serve as their teen's “borrowed prefrontal cortex”—and explaining why decisions matter helps teens learn how to think, not just what to do. Widen the bridge instead of turning it into a tightrope. College, careers, sports, and interests don't have to be high-stakes, one-shot decisions. Teens thrive when they're allowed to explore, pivot, and learn by doing—building confidence and resilience along the way. Connection is the strongest protective factor. Teens don't need perfect parents—they need consistent, caring adults. One solid relationship can change the trajectory of a young person's life. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with David Maffei, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Americas at Staffbase, about how university presidents and boards must rethink how communication functions inside their institutions under today's crisis-driven conditions. Drawing on more than two decades of enterprise and higher education communications leadership, Maffei explains why internal communication now determines external credibility, why preparedness is the defining variable in crisis response, and how fragmented communication structures quietly undermine institutional trust. The discussion also explores how technology and AI amplify leadership discipline rather than replace it, and why presidential communication can no longer be delegated. This conversation is especially relevant for presidents, boards, and senior leadership teams navigating political pressure, public scrutiny, and rising expectations for transparency, alignment, and trust. Topics Covered Why internal communication now drives external brand credibility How crisis preparedness exposes governance strength or weakness Why internal notification must come before public announcements How political pressure reshapes presidential communication risk Why communication is now a core presidential competency The role of ego management in institutional leadership How siloed communication tools fracture institutional alignment Why unified board and presidential signaling protects credibility How technology and AI magnify leadership discipline Why communication is now embedded inside strategy, not downstream from it Three Takeaways for Higher Ed Leadership Preparedness determines whether crisis strengthens or destabilizes trust. • Do you ever feel so burdened, overwhelmed, or stressed that hope feels out of reach? And do you wonder how to help your teens hold onto hope when life feels heavy—for them and for you? Summary Paragraph: In this inspiring conversation, psychologist, author, and speaker Dr. Julia Garcia shares why hope isn't something you passively wait for—it's something you practice, one emotional habit at a time. Drawing from behavioral science, storytelling, and her own lived experience, Dr. Garcia reveals the five habits that help us navigate difficult emotions, interrupt cycles of overwhelm, and reconnect with a grounded sense of worth and possibility. She speaks directly to the silent struggles so many moms carry—the shame, pressure, worry, and emotional load that can eclipse hope—and offers a compassionate, practical roadmap for finding your way back to yourself. This episode will help you cultivate hope in your own life and model it for your teens, young adults, and entire family. Dr. Julia Garcia is a psychologist, author, and internationally recognized speaker dedicated to empowering people through the science of mental health and emotional wellbeing. For nearly twenty years, she has helped educators, students, business leaders, families, and individuals navigate fear, doubt, burnout, and hopelessness by building sustainable habits of healing. Her book, The Five Habits of Hope, blends neuroscience, emotional practice, and real-life stories from people around the world to show that hope is not merely a feeling—it's a daily discipline. Whether through her TEDx talks, interactive workshops, or national presentations, Dr. Garcia's mission is to make the tools of hope accessible for everyone. Three Takeaways for Moms of Teens and Young Adults 1. Hope is a Practice, Not a Personality Trait You don't have to feel hopeful to begin cultivating hope. Each of the five habits—reflection, risk-taking, release, receiving, and repurposing—creates a pathway back to emotional regulation, self-worth, and grounded optimism. 2. Your Feelings Don't Make You Weak—They Make You Real Emotions leads to overwhelm, burnout, and disconnection. Naming what you're struggling with, taking emotional risks, and receiving support strengthens your resilience and helps your teen see that emotional honesty is part of wellbeing. 3. Your Kids Need to See Who You Are, Not Just What You Do When your teens witness you engaging in passion, joy, creativity, rest, advocacy, and purpose—not just managing logistics and meeting expectations. Repurposing your emotions into something meaningful teaches them that hard things can lead to beautiful outcomes. Have you ever wondered why some conflicts deepen relationships while others tear them apart? What if the very moments that feel the most uncomfortable with your teen—or your partner—could become the doorway to more intimacy and trust? In this rich and eye-opening conversation, Colleen talks with Anna Lecat—researcher, author of Loving Conflict, intimacy consultant, and global speaker—about how conflict can be a bridge rather than a barrier. Anna shares her powerful framework for “fighting kindly,” transforming hard conversations into moments of connection, courage, and clarity. With stories from her own family, her multicultural life, and her work with couples and executive teams, Anna reveals how naming fears, listening deeply, and expressing humanity can turn everyday tensions into opportunities for deeper love and understanding. Anna Lecat is the researcher and author of Loving Conflict, an intimacy and conflict consultant, and a global speaker on connection, trust, and collaboration. A proud EO member and triple immigrant, she has built companies and communities across Ukraine, China, the U.S., and now France. With over 25 years of experience supporting couples, executive teams, family businesses, and high-stakes relationships, Anna blends practical tools, embodied practices, and the relational language of dance and play to help people move through conflict, build trust, and create authentic connection—in love, leadership, and life. She believes the quality of our lives is determined by the quality of our relationships, and that intimacy is the key. ✨ Three Takeaways for Moms 1. Conflict is an opportunity—not a danger. When handled with presence and curiosity, conflict becomes a doorway to deeper connection with your teen, not a threat to your relationship. 2. Name the fear beneath the fight. Behind every tense moment is a fear—of being dismissed, misunderstood, or not enough. When moms and teens identify the fear, defenses soften and true dialogue begins. 3. Model the skills you want your teen to learn. You teach conflict-resolution not by lecturing, but by showing vulnerability, taking responsibility for your part, apologizing when needed, and demonstrating how adults repair relationships. As Christmas draws near, excitement fills our homes—along with the endless catalogs, wish lists, and the subtle temptation to want more. In this episode of the Raising Godly Girls Podcast, hosts Rachael Culpepper and Melissa Bearden wrestle honestly with the tension every family feels: how do we help our daughters avoid holiday greediness and instead cultivate grateful, generous hearts? Through personal stories and biblical wisdom, they explore how the desire for "just one more thing" can take root even in the sweetest child—and how God gives parents the tools to gently guide their girls toward contentment.  Rachael and Melissa take listeners back to their own childhood Christmases—where innocence, wonder, and excitement sometimes gave way to comparison or selfishness. They remind us that these moments aren't failures but opportunities. Opportunities to help our girls understand the difference between healthy desire and a heart consumed with having more. Through Patti Garibay's "Greedy Christmas" devotion, moms are encouraged to simplify traditions, model self-control, and anchor the season in the joy that comes from thoughtful, meaningful giving.  The episode also equips moms with practical, faith-filled strategies for shaping their daughter's heart: reframing the Christmas list, creating space for gratitude, and gently redirecting attention away from abundance and toward the Giver of every good gift. Rachael and Melissa highlight how modeling contentment in our own habits—whether through budgeting, slowing down, or choosing simplicity—sets a powerful example for the next generation. And as always, the conversation returns to the truth that generosity isn't about what we can afford, but about reflecting the heart of Christ.  Listeners will also hear how American Heritage Girls reinforces these lessons year-round. Through badges, service projects, and Troop community life, girls learn that generosity, stewardship, and humility are practiced virtues—shaped not by Christmas morning, but by a Christ-centered lifestyle. This episode empowers moms to help their daughters resist the cultural pull toward more and embrace the lasting joy of being a cheerful giver.    Three Takeaways from This Episode  Contentment Over Consumption — Help your daughter practice gratitude and resist the pressure to pursue "more."  Thoughtful Gift-Giving — Tools like the four-gift rule teach budgeting, stewardship, and generosity.  Generosity From the Heart — Joy grows when girls give with love, reflecting God's character rather than the world's expectations.  Scripture References  Luke 12:15 – "Be on guard against all greed…"  2 Corinthians 9:7 – "God loves a cheerful giver."    Explore more resources to raise girls rooted in Christ at raisinggodlygirls.com. Find or start an AHG Troop at americanheritagegirls.org.

When you start communicating with boundaries, the tone of every relationship begins to change — sometimes in ways that surprise you. In this episode, Mary Baker breaks down what it really means to speak from emotional honesty and detachment, and why this combination completely shifts the emotional climate at home, at work, and in your friendships. You'll learn how calm, grounded communication builds trust and respect while reducing drama and confusion. But this kind of growth doesn't always feel peaceful at first. EP309: The Paradigm Shift: Why Boundary Work Feels So Uncomfortable at First

Boundary work sounds empowering — and it is — but no one tells you how strange it feels at first. When you begin honoring your limits, your nervous system doesn't throw a party; it throws a fit. In this episode, we unpack why your body equates "familiar" with "safe," even when familiar has meant people-pleasing, over-giving, or pretending you're fine. You'll learn why this discomfort doesn't mean you're doing something wrong — it means you're finally doing something different. We'll also explore the family patterns that made boundaries feel like betrayal, and how learning to stay with that unease is how we begin to rewire safety from the inside out. This conversation isn't about blame — it's about awareness, compassion, and learning to calm your body while you practice a new kind of self-loyalty.   Three Takeaways 1.    The body often mistakes self-abandonment for safety — until we teach it something new. 2.    Boundaries may feel "wrong" at first because they disrupt old emotional rules. 3.    Learning to stay with the discomfort is how real confidence and self-trust begin to grow.   Vulnerability isn't exposure; it's invitation. It's saying, 'This is who I am — can you meet me here?'     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! The Real Cost of Overlooking Teaching Quality in Higher Ed

Changing Higher Ed

Improving how teaching happens in the classroom is one of the most effective ways to increase student retention, stabilize tuition revenue, and strengthen institutional reputation—yet most universities don't manage it strategically. In this episode of Changing Higher Ed, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with David Gooblar, Associate Professor at the University of Iowa and author of The Missing Course, about how teaching quality has fallen outside institutional oversight and what presidents and boards can do to make it a core part of strategic leadership. They explore how governance structures, incentive systems, and faculty preparation create a blind spot that limits progress on student success. Gooblar and McNaughton outline what leadership can do to realign teaching, strategy, and accountability to improve learning and institutional performance. Topics Covered: Why first-year GPA, driven by classroom experience, predicts retention and completion. How tenure and incentive systems discourage teaching innovation. The leadership role in integrating pedagogy into strategic and financial planning. Practical ways to invest in teaching infrastructure and faculty capacity. How governing boards can hold institutions accountable for the conditions that enable great teaching. Why It Matters: When institutions manage teaching with the same rigor as finance and enrollment, they see measurable gains in persistence, lower cost per graduate, and stronger mission credibility. Teaching quality is not just a faculty concern—it's a leadership lever for institutional performance. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards: Make teaching measurable and managed. Track instructional quality alongside financial and enrollment metrics. Align incentives with institutional goals. Reward teaching innovation in evaluation and promotion. Invest in the conditions for learning. Fund the infrastructure and faculty capacity that make engagement and feedback possible. In this episode, Dr. Drumm McNaughton talks with Dr. Sean Stevens, Chief Research Advisor at FIRE—the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression—about findings from FIRE's newly released College Free Speech Rankings and the state of academic freedom, the growing political pressures on universities, and how presidents and boards can protect open dialogue in today's divided climate. Topics Covered: Why FIRE expanded its mission beyond higher education and no longer stands for "Foundation for Individual Rights in Education." How FIRE's College Free Speech Rankings and Scholars Under FIRE survey measure tolerance and academic freedom nationwide. What the data shows about declining political tolerance among students and faculty. How government pressure is influencing faculty terminations and speech policies. The role of leadership in maintaining consistent, transparent free speech policies. Examples from Vanderbilt and Dartmouth showing how structured dialogue programs improve campus discourse. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards: Establish and Communicate Bright Lines – Define clear speech policies and enforce them consistently across all viewpoints. Feeling stuck doesn't mean you're unmotivated — it usually means you don't feel safe enough to move. Fear, shame, and self-doubt can quietly trap us in loops of overthinking, avoidance, and perfectionism, especially when past experiences have taught our bodies that taking risks isn't safe. In this episode, Mary explores why fear often feels stronger than logic, how trauma trains us to freeze, and what it actually takes to begin moving again. You'll learn how to create safety before action, why supportive relationships are essential for unfreezing, and how micro-steps — not big leaps — build lasting courage. This episode is for anyone who's tired of being stuck but too scared to push forward alone. You'll walk away understanding that healing isn't about forcing yourself to “just do it” — it's about learning to trust your body, your timing, and the safe people who can help you move again.   Three Takeaways 1. Fear and paralysis are signs of an unsafe nervous system — not a lack of willpower. 2. You can't move forward until you feel safe enough to — safety is the foundation for courage. 3. Real change happens when safety meets support, one small step at a time.   Healing begins the moment we let someone see the parts we've been hiding — and discover we're still safe.      Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this episode, we talk about how to know when it's time to loosen control, why “fine” isn't the same as fulfilled, and what helps us feel safe enough to soften. Because true courage isn't about forcing change — it's about allowing growth to happen where safety and honesty meet.  THREE TAKEAWAYS 1. Letting go isn't giving up — it's trusting yourself enough to stop forcing outcomes. 2. Safety comes from consistency, empathy, and ownership — not control. 3. Real courage begins when we allow vulnerability to meet safety.                      The courage to stop managing everything begins with one brave thought: maybe I'm safe enough now to let go.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this episode we're talking about the truths we often avoid — the ones that feel too heavy, too risky, or too painful to face. These are the truths about ourselves, our relationships, and our lives that we push aside in the name of comfort, control, or keeping the peace. But avoiding them doesn't make them disappear. It only keeps us stuck in the very patterns that drain us. Together, we'll explore why these truths are so hard to look at, how they show up in everyday life, and what begins to shift when we stop running from them. If you've ever felt that quiet nudge that something isn't working — but you've been afraid to name it — this conversation is for you. Three Takeaways 1.    Clarity is freeing, even when it hurts. Avoiding truth costs you more than facing it. 2.    Truth builds self-trust. Every time you admit reality, you strengthen your ability to handle it. 3.    Facing truth is an act of courage. And it opens the door to healing, better choices, and peace.   Avoiding truth  doesn't protect us.  It only drains us, leaks out sideways, and keeps us living smaller than we're meant to.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this episode, I invite you into a gentle reflection process with questions designed to spark curiosity, not anxiety. Through real-life examples, we'll explore boundaries, emotional honesty, self-care, belonging, and confidence—helping you notice where you are on your journey without judgment. These aren't tests. They're invitations. Three Takeaways 1.    Questions are data, not verdicts. The feelings that surface when you reflect—guilt, frustration, relief—are clues to your growth, not proof of failure. 2.    Intimacy starts with honesty. Pay attention to when your words and your heart line up—and when they don't. That gap reveals where safety is missing. 3.    Small promises build trust. Even tiny acts of follow-through (like going to bed when you said you would) lay the groundwork for deeper confidence.   Looking away  kept you safe before.  Looking honestly will set you free now.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! We often pride ourselves on being reliable, supportive, and present for others—but what happens when we're not offering the same loyalty inward? This isn't about harsh self-criticism or impossible standards. It's about noticing the gap between what we say we want and what we actually follow through on when it comes to our own needs, boundaries, and truth. We explore why we tend to abandon ourselves in small ways and how that adds up over time—not because we're weak, but because we were taught to survive that way. This isn't about fixing yourself. It's about remembering how to listen, recommit, and rebuild the trust you've been craving from within. No drama. No shame. Just one small, self-honoring moment at a time.   Three Takeaways: 1.     There's a big difference between being dependable for others and being dependable for yourself. 2.     The small moments where you follow through—or don't—have a bigger impact than you think. 3.     Rebuilding self-trust doesn't require perfection, just consistent presence and gentle repair. Play Episode Listen Later Jul 8, 2025 24:18

In this episode, we're diving into what it really means to trust yourself—especially after years of self-doubt, people-pleasing, or putting everyone else's needs ahead of your own. Self-trust isn't about always having the answers or getting it right every time. It's about knowing that you'll show up for yourself, tell the truth about what you feel, and make choices that honor your inner knowing, even when it's hard. You'll hear about why so many of us learned to look outward instead of inward, how subtle self-betrayals can build up over time, and what it actually takes to come back to yourself. If you've been stuck in second-guessing, this episode will meet you with honesty, compassion, and a clear path toward repair.    Three Takeaways: 1.     Rebuilding trust with yourself starts in small, often invisible moments. 2.     There's a big difference between keeping peace and keeping your truth. 3.     The way you respond to yourself in failure matters more than the failure itself.   Approval feels nice in the moment. But true peace comes from trusting yourself.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! Intro:Good morning! Matt Flummer teaches today on a challenging, crucial topic: justice. In our Proverbs series, we'll explore biblical justice, contrasting it with secular views to find profound clarity.Scripture References: Proverbs 1:1-3, 17:23, 29:4, James 2:1-4, Proverbs 18:5, 24:23-24, Isaiah 5:20, Proverbs 11:1, 20:10, 16:8, 16:11, 28:16, Leviticus 19:35-36, Proverbs 6:10-11, 10:4, 13:18, 13:23, 14:21, 14:31, 19:17, 21:26, 31:8-9, Deuteronomy 10:18, Isaiah 1:17, Jeremiah 21:11-12, Proverbs 21:3, Micah 6:8, Romans 3:10-26Key Points:Defining Justice: Proverbs links justice (Mishpat) and righteousness (Sadech) as inseparable. Secular views often split, focusing on either fairness/equity or freedom/individualism.Injustice in Proverbs:Bribery (Prov 17:23): Using influence for personal gain, treating people as means.Partiality to Wicked (Prov 18:5): Refusing to confront evil within one's "team" for perceived unity.Justice in Proverbs:Business Dealings (Prov 11:1): Fair measures, honest gain, opposing dishonest practices.Treatment of the Poor: Poverty is complex—caused by laziness/foolishness (Prov 6:10-11) AND injustice/oppression (Prov 13:23). Proverbs commands radical generosity regardless of cause (Prov 14:21), honoring God. We must also defend the oppressed (Prov 31:8-9), as God aligns with the vulnerable. Jesus himself identified with the poor.Three Takeaways:"I and my things are not my own." Our wealth is God's and partly for the poor (gleaning laws). We are stewards; be radically generous.Corporate & Individual Responsibility. Bible shows both: families/nations accountable for others' sins, but also individual accountability before God. Hold both truths.Justice Linked to Worship. Justice is giving each their due, including God. "To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice" (Prov 21:3).The Way of Justice: Through the Cross:"No one is righteous" (Rom 3:10). We can't be just on our own.God's righteousness is manifested through faith in Jesus (Rom 3:21-26). He is both just and our justifier. The cross is ultimate justice. Conclusion:We can't achieve justice alone. Trust Jesus, who is just and justifies us. Practicing justice pleases God, made possible by Him.Call to Action:At worship, ask the Spirit to reveal injustice in your life (e.g., treating people as means). Submit to Jesus. The communion table symbolizes His ultimate act of justice. Come and receive His body broken and blood shed for you. Support the show*Summaries and transcripts are generated using AI. In this episode, we take a deeper look at the slow, often unnoticed ways we begin to disconnect from ourselves—especially when survival, acceptance, or love seemed to depend on it. Whether it started in childhood or in a past relationship, the moment you began second-guessing your gut or hiding your truth was likely a moment of self-protection. But over time, those small choices can add up to a life that doesn't quite feel like your own. We'll explore how shame, emotional detachment, and a need for approval can pull us away from our true voice—and what it means to gently start coming home to yourself. You'll be invited to reflect on your own turning points, not with judgment, but with curiosity and compassion. Because the goal isn't to blame yourself for how you've coped—it's to recognize that you now have the power to choose something different.   Three Takeaways: 1.   There are moments in your story that quietly shaped how you relate to yourself - and they're worth revisiting with fresh eyes. 2.   What feels like a personality trait might actually be a survival pattern you no longer need. 3.   Reconnection doesn't happen in a single breakthrough - it's a series of tiny, loyal choices to stop leaving yourself behind.     Coming back  to yourself isn't dramatic. It's in the quiet choice to stop abandoning yourself -  even in the small moments.         Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! Higher education leaders are searching for better ways to engage students, improve retention, and close equity gaps—especially in the wake of COVID-related learning disruptions. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Dr. Justin Shaffer, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Teaching Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. They discuss Dr. Shaffer's book, High Structure Course Design, which offers a proven framework for transforming student outcomes. High structure course design—built on clarity, repetition, feedback, and engagement—originated in STEM education but is now widely recognized as effective across disciplines. This approach doesn't water down rigor; it scaffolds the learning process so students at all levels can succeed. The result: better retention, higher achievement, and greater equity in academic outcomes. This conversation is especially relevant for institutional leaders seeking to scale evidence-based instructional practices and boost institutional performance. Topics Covered: Why many students struggle in gateway courses and what faculty can do differently The long-term effects of post-COVID learning disruptions on student readiness Three structural layers that drive student engagement and retention Four foundational principles that support learning across all disciplines How high structure pedagogy closes equity gaps without lowering standards The undervalued impact of teaching-focused faculty on student success Infrastructure and leadership decisions that enable faculty innovation How structured courses also improve career readiness and workforce outcomes Real-World Examples: 40–60% failure rates improved through course redesign A biology field course that teaches both science and professional skills Centers for teaching and learning that support faculty-wide improvements Three Takeaways for Leadership: Course design is one of the most powerful and underused levers for retention and equity. Teaching-focused faculty are essential institutional assets and must be supported. Scalable infrastructure for instructional quality is not optional—it's a strategic necessity. Recommended For: Presidents, provosts, academic leaders, board members, and faculty development directors who want scalable ways to boost student success and institutional outcomes. Today, we kick off the month's theme of Reclaiming Inner Safety by unpacking why so many of us live in a constant state of disconnection. From racing thoughts and emotional numbing to people-pleasing and overfunctioning, we explore how early life experiences—like trauma, chronic stress, or invalidation—teach us that it's not safe to feel, need, or be fully present. These patterns of self-protection may have once helped us survive, but now they're keeping us from living a grounded, authentic life. You'll learn how disconnection often hides behind busyness, anxiety, or over-responsibility, and how the journey back to yourself starts with small, intentional moments of presence. We also talk about how this month, we will be talking about practices like EMDR and mindfulness can support this healing process by helping us gently return to our bodies, emotions, and inner truth—without shame or overwhelm. Three Takeaways 1.     Disconnection is a survival response—not a personal failure. Many of us learned to tune out from our emotions and bodies because it didn't feel safe to stay connected. 2.     Busyness, people-pleasing, and overthinking are often symptoms of deeper emotional avoidance. These patterns are how we manage discomfort—but they keep us from our truth. 3.     The path back to yourself starts with presence. A single breath, a named feeling, or a brief moment of stillness can begin to rebuild trust with your inner world.                          When stillness feels unsafe, we don't slow down – we stay busy, reactive, or numb. Not because we want to – but because it feels safer than what we'd have to feel. Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! Driving Question. Where is true life found? Main Idea. By His grace, true life is found by hoping in God and guarding His gospel. 1. By hoping in God, not earthly wealth (17–19) Two warnings of wealth. i. (17) Danger of haughtiness. ii. (17) Danger of false hope. Helpful and hopeful reminder. "but [set your hope] on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy." Matt 6:19–21 Jn 10:10 Application. [Two indications that you're trusting in Christ and storing up treasure]: i. Thankful to God and rightly enjoy what he provides (17). ii. Be rich in good works, generous and ready to share (18). 2. By holding-fast God's gospel, not man's knowledge (20–21) Paul gives three final pleads to Timothy to have a faithful pastorate. i. A careful ministry (20) ii. A blameless ministry (20) iii. A graceful ministry (21) Application: i. Do you treasure God's Word as a sacred trust, or treat it as common? ii. Are you proactively guarding your heart and your church from error? iii. Are you more influenced by podcasts, pundits, and platforms than by Scripture? iv. Where might your heart be drifting from the simplicity and sufficiency of Jesus? Three Takeaways from 1 Timothy. 1. The Church exists to protect sound doctrine. Know the signs of false teachers (1:3–7; 4:1–3; 6:4–5, 21) Prayer keeps the church gospel centered (2:1–7) Proper roles rooted in creation (2:8–15) Faithful qualified officers (3:1–13) Teaching right doctrine (1:3–7, 10–11; 4:1–6, 11–16; 6:3–5, 20–21) Faithful living that bears Christ's name (1:3–5; 3:1–16; 4:6, 12–16; 6:3, 6–12) Rich doctrine is found only in Jesus Christ (1:1–2; 3:16, 6:21) 2. The Church is a household with structure. Christ is the head of the church (1:1–2; 3:14–15) Prayer and the Word guide worship (2:1–7; 4:13–16) Led by Elders (also called overseers) (3:1–7) Served by Deacons (3:8–13) The Congregation is a family (3:14–15; 5:1–2) Caring for widows (5:3–16) Supporting elders (5:17–18) Accountable to each other (doctrine, relationships, actions, care) 3. The Gospel is for the nations. Jesus came into the world to save sinners (1:15) Prayer (2:1–7) The glorious gospel itself (3:16) The gospel forms the church in missional context (cf Acts 18:19–21; 19:1–10; 20:17–38)

We're often told that courage is about inner strength…that we have to dig deep and face the fear alone. But that's not how it actually works. Courage is a relational experience. We're more likely to take brave steps when we feel emotionally safe, supported, and connected. In this episode, we're exploring how safe belonging, not just fitting in, but being truly accepted becomes the foundation for real change. We'll dig into how the nervous system responds to connection, why we're more likely to take risks when we feel emotionally secure, and what happens when that belonging is missing or conditional. You'll also hear how to tell the difference between false belonging (where you shrink to fit in) and true belonging (where you expand to be yourself). If you've ever wondered why change feels impossible in certain relationships - or why you suddenly feel more capable in others - this episode is for you.   Three Takeaways 1.    The body needs to feel safe before the brain can take a risk. Belonging calms fear and unlocks courage. 2.    You can't be brave in environments where you're trying to survive. Safety isn't optional, it's foundational. 3.    True belonging allows you to make choices that reflect who you are, not just who others expect you to be.   That's what safe belonging does.  It doesn't just hold you-it helps you come back to yourself  and move forward as the version of you who finally feels free to grow.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this episode, we look at what really fuels courage, and how our early experiences with connection—or the lack of it—shape whether we can move forward when life gets hard. We'll explore how some of the ways you “get in your own way” might actually be protective patterns rooted in past disconnection. In this episode, we're exploring the invisible ways boundary issues show up in our everyday routines - especially in how we manage time, energy, and expectations. Most of us think of boundaries as things we set with other people, but what about the quiet, internal boundaries we often ignore? Like the ones that involve being realistic about what we can actually get done, or giving ourselves time to rest, think, and reset? You'll hear a fresh take on how things like over-planning, skipping buffer time, and pushing through exhaustion aren't just bad habits - they're symptoms of boundary blind spots. We'll dig into what's really going on when you feel behind, overwhelmed, or frustrated with yourself—and how small mindset shifts around time and planning can make a big difference in how you feel and function. Three Takeaways 1.    Boundaries aren't just for relationships, they also show up in how you treat your time, your schedule, and your capacity. 2.    There's often a gap between what we expect of ourselves and what's actually humanly possible - and ignoring that gap creates daily stress. Confidence and calm don't come from doing more, they come from creating space for what matters most.     Overloading yourself isn't strength – it's self-abandonment.     Get your FREE Boundaries Ebook here! In this week's episode of the Tax Credit Tuesday podcast, host Michael Novogradac, CPA, and guest Thomas Stagg, CPA, one of Novogradac and the nation's leading experts in rent and income limits, discuss three key takeaways from this year's release. First, Stagg and Novogradac discuss income limits being higher than anticipated. The second key takeaway is why the rent and income limits were higher'a change in HUD's methodology for calculating inflation factor in rent and income limits. Finally, they discuss a number of metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) that were reorganized or changed in the 2025 limits release, including why a disproportionate number of the changes are in Connecticut.
