Dean, Matthew, and Scott recruit the help of Kirking Off host, Brian, and the four of them go deep into Mike Flannagan's attempt balance the Kubrick/King dichotomy with his vision of Doctor Sleep. Danny is all grown up, he's a drunk, and his actions have caused more death than Jack Torrance ever did. Dick Halloran is back, and he's got opinions on Danny's porn choices, and Bruce Greenwood makes an appearance as AA Doctor from Southie. Smiley from Training Day gets a prize if he saves three white folk in one month, and he hopes he doesn't have to blow grown-up Danny's brains out in his bathtub. Rose the Hat and the True Knot cruise around with their fancy hats (shoes optional), and Dean does his best Emperor impression in an attempt to get Portland Anderson to go back to his southern roots. It's a wild ride that you will not want to miss! The Shining begins as Jack Torrance is interviewing for a position as the off-season caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, which sits in the mountains of Colorado. Some people say it was inspired by the real-life Stanley Hotel, though Stephen King says the Overlook is entirely fictional and doesn't have a real-life basis. Who's to say? Anyway, the Overlook represents a fresh start for the Torrance family, as Jack was fired from his previous job for brutally beating a student that slashed his tires. Jack has anger problems, to say the least, and is a recovering alcoholic. He really sees this job as an opportunity to rekindle things with his wife, Wendy, reconnect with his son, Danny, and focus on writing his play. Soon enough, the harsh Colorado winter sets in, the family is unable to leave the hotel grounds, and sinister things begin to happen that are centering around Danny. Danny has this unique gift that the in-season chef, Dick Halloran, calls his shine. Dick has a lesser version of this gift. Danny can have visions that seem to be premonitions, thanks to his imaginary friend, Tony, and can see and hear the hotel's ghosts, all of whom seem to have some nefarious intentions with the Torrance family. The Overlook is hungry, and Danny's shine is the perfect dinner. How big a part does destiny play in the family's life? What was Danny's first sign that the hotel's spirits were after him? Do we believe in ghosts? Sisters Who Scene It

Katie and Bridget drive their Sno-Cat up to the Overlook hotel to re-watch The Shining! It's a scary movie with intense performances, cheese sandwiches, PartyCity skeletons, and honestly just some really beautiful imagery of blood elevators! This film may or may not have a number of conspiracy theories surrounding it, but one things for certain... Dick Halloran deserved better! Released in 1980, it was adapted from Stephen King's novel of the same name, with the infamous director who brought it to life, Stanley Kubrick.

This week, we are reviewing the prequel to Doctor Sleep, Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, and Stephen King's least favorite adaptation of his work: The Shining. It lies secluded, deep within the heavily forested mountains of Colorado. He is hired to be the caretaker of The Overlook in the winter off-season. While there he intends to write the next great american novel whose protagonist is worn down by the pressures of capitalism and the lack of leisure time. Meanwhile Danny Torrence is tutored by a magical negro about Danny’s ability to see the future and read minds. Also, the hotel is haunted and Jack goes crazy. Do you really not know the plot to THE SHINING? https://youtu.be/WJfhB3Vj_G8 Review of The Shining OK, here we go. I appreciate this movie. It is one of Kubrick’s masterpieces. It’s visually stunning and meticulously crafted. It’s undeniably an great and important movie. I just don’t like it. It’s slow. The characters are empty shells of people that lack most semblance of humanity and motivation, other than to: be scared, or be menacing. To be frank, I couldn’t figure out what was going on and why most of the time. The book was better. COME AT ME HORROR FANS, I don’t like your precious SHINING. Original artwork by Dustin Goebel whose Instagram you should follow @Dgoebel00 Score for The Shining Score 8/10 FIGHT ME. (It should be noted that this is the opinion of only one of the hosts of Horror Movie Talk, David gives it a 10/10) The ShiningAdd The Shining to your collection or rent the full movie on Amazon.Buy/Rent from Amazon Spoilers for The Shining Expand for Spoilers Differences Between the Book and the Film The start out, I wanted to talk about the differences between the book The Shining, and the movie The Shining. Dick HalloranIn the book, Dick Halloran lives and ends up being instrumental in saving Wendy and DannyIn the film, Dick gets pretty much instantly murdered, and only helps circumstantially by bringing up the snow cat.The OverlookThe hotel is a real entity in the book, it is very literally trying to consume the Torrence familyIn the film, the hotel seems to be haunted and there are hints that it is steering Jack, but the connection between Jack's psychosis and the hotel is unclear.TonyTony in the book is Danny's "imaginary friend" that talks to him and shows him things. But really, Tony is a spirit that is more of a guardian angel. In the film Tony is... What is tony? He seems to be Danny's subconscience or a spirit possessing him... or something.Hedge Animals (The one welcome change)In the book, there were a bunch of topiary animals that would move and eventually attack Wendy, Danny, and Dick.In the film, the hedge animals don't exist, but there is a hedge maze, which figures into the ending. The EndingIn the book, Jack is distracted by trying to kill his family and forgets to release pressure from the aging boiler in the basement. As a result, the boiler explodes, ripping a hole through the Overlook, and causing it to be burned down to the ground. In the film, Jack gets lost in the hedge maze and freezes to death. https://youtu.be/uGOd_cM_voY Needless to say, Stephen King wasn't a huge fan of the film. Differences in the Doctor Sleep Movie/Book The differences are very interesting given that a sequel to ...

#36: The Shining: Scatman Crothers Nearly Saves The Day

General Snobbery | Film and Philosophy

Stanley Kubrick's film The Shining is about a guy who loses his mind in a really big hotel. It's also about a woman who loses her mind in a big hotel, a child who has pretty much already lost his mind, and Scatman Crothers. Scatman plays cook Dick Halloran, a source of light amidst ever-increasing darkness, until that darkness, in the form of Jack Nicholson, swings an axe into Scatman's chest. Then Scatman dies, and there is no more hope.  This is a movie that frightened us both as children and adults. It is difficult to say why, apart from the fact that it's really scary. Why did Kubrick make this movie? Did he just want to scare the bejesus out of everyone? What does the word "bejesus" even mean? Is Kubrick a sadistic jerk? A man with profound insight into the uncanny? A devotee of Carl Jung? The man who staged the moon landing? The Shining asks these questions and many more.  Join us for this snob that meanders throughout the Overlook Hotel, through its strange geometry, through Room 237, and even through the entity known as Scatman Crothers. We hope that you don't become terrified of the two little dead girls wearing dresses and standing still, or at the thought of them currently standing right next to you and staring at you. We all know that's the certain path to total madness.
