THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2009 retrospective continues with one of the most memorable summer blockbusters of that year, J. J. Abrams's reboot of "Star Trek" starring a whole new cast including John Cho, Ben Cross, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Winona Ryder, Zoe Saldaña, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Eric Bana, and the returning Leonard Nimoy. Seen as a success the year it was released, it spawned two sequels and renewed interest in "Star Trek" as a franchise, which continues on television to this day. But how has this particular film aged in the 16 years since? Please join Josh Parham & Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss the cast, their performances, Abrams's direction, the story's themes, the visual effects, Michael Giacchino's score, its awards season run, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. As voted for on our Patreon, we return to Kelly Reichardt with her 2010 Western, Meek's Cutoff. Ben argues that no discussion of the American Western is complete without Reichardt's film, Wilson highlights the film's fraught production that miraculously led to its poetic ending, and Eli frames the film within the larger context of America's problematic Manifest Destiny. We get serious, analytical and near-academic with Reichardt's masterwork… all the way until you hear us try on our best impressions of Bruce Greenwood's Stephen Meek as Wallace from Wallace and Gromit. "Hardball" was a 1994 sitcom that aired on Fox. The show centered around the Pioneers, a fictional American League baseball team struggling to stay out of last place. Hardball was originally intended to be released along side of that year's World Series but a real life MLB strike prevented that from happening and instead become part of the first FOX NFL Sunday. Despite coming off the heels of multiple successful baseball movies and the show's ensemble cast which featured Mike Starr, Bruce Greenwood, and a very young Joe Rogan (in his first acting credit). Hardball was canceled after only 7 episodes. Many contribute the timing of the strike to being a factor behind the show's low viewership. 30 years later will the S1E1 crew call this one a homerun or will it strike out? Note: At the end of the episode, Wiz states the next review will be All The King's Men directed by Robert Rossen. Unfortunately, Wiz has a cold and will not be recording an episode with Zero this week. So, next week, Zero and Wiz will review The Manchurian Candidate directed by John Frankenheimer. Sorry about that. Wiz DOES NOT RECOMMEND Thirteen Days Historical films can be a pretty thorny premise to get right. Either you can evoke the feeling of a person or time in history or emulate it so damn well it feels like you are in the room with them. Thirteen Days, Roger Donaldson's retelling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, is a film that I'm not sure what it's trying to do. If it's trying to be an emulation of the time and the people involved, there are a few things that the film fumbled on. Let's start with the main characters: Bobby Kennedy, played by Steven Culp, is probably the best of the three who looks and sounds the part well enough, but he does slip in specific scenes. John F. Kennedy, played by Bruce Greenwood, looks the most like his real counterpart, but sounds nothing like him except when he's upset. Kenneth O'Donnell, played by Kevin Costner, is the worst of the three…and of course he is the one you see the most. Not only does Costner not even look like him, he also doesn't sound like him. In fact, Costner has one of the worst New England accents I've heard in a film. If you were going the route of feeling like you are in the room with these titans of history, the illusion is pretty much shattered when you can look on screen and you have to remind yourself who these guys are supposed to play. Now, if the film is trying to evoke a feeling of a person or place in time, the film takes a few stylistic choices that don't work the way that the film intends: The film has scenes that utilize archival footage from the times. It's effective at first, but then the film randomly implements it with no precise reason. There are scenes that are archival, but there are also that have actors playing the scene and neither seem to be of any importance. Another thing that doesn't have a good reason to be there is the transition to black and white. There are scenes that randomly start in black and white then transition to color…and the reason Roger Donaldson gives is he wanted to create a historical feeling akin to photos from Life Magazine. This fails since it feels randomly placed. These issues are further compounded by the slow, drawn out nature of the film. A slower pace could help with creating tension or developing characters to become more engrossed in the film…but the film does neither. The first hour goes on for way too long being hung up on details that could have been cut for brevity or pace. The film does pick up towards the second half, but the need to hasten the film is still desired. In honesty, Thirteen Days is also kind of a throwback for historical epics as well. The film is a clear good guy/bad guy dynamic with a political thriller feel…and as such the moral grays that you may be used to now is not present. But if you look at what I'm saying and say “actually I kind of miss movies like this”, then you should give the film a try. But Thirteen Days, as accurate as it may be, is a film that could have actually benefited from some creative licensing.

“Bruce Greenwood, who's surprisingly not crooked in this movie? And to help dive into this dull-ass flick, the gang welcomes back to the show, friend and film critic, Angelica Jade Bastién! Why did they want to make this movie so damn serious and not let any comedy on the screen? Is Will Smith's character listening to “Superstition” on loop every morning? Why couldn't they pump a few more bucks into these digital effects? Was Bridget Moynihan's direction just to play the character as if she was a secret robot? And why in the world weren't Shia LaBeouf's scenes cut for time? PLUS: Was the most expensive visual effect in this movie really digitally removing Will's johnson from the shower scene?  I, Robot stars Will Smith, Bridget Moynihan, Bruce Greenwood, James Cromwell, Chi McBride, Adrian Ricard, Fiona Hogan, and Alan Tudyk as Sonny; directed by Alex Proyas. Tread Perilously begins a month of would-be prestige TV series that failed to connect with the debut episode of John from Cincinnati -- "His Visit: Day One." Retired surfer Mitch Yost is spotted on the water by an ambitious promoter and a mysterious man who repeats what he hears called John. Back in town, Mitch's son, Butchie -- also a retired pro surfer -- is anxious to score, but discovers his heroin has been cut so much, it might as well be nothing. Meanwhile, Butchie's son, Shaun, is looking to participate in his first surfing competition and maybe get a sponsorship from the promoter hounding Mitch. Do any of these things matter? And why does Mitch spontaneously hover two feet in the air? Erik and Justin confront one of the most infamous examples of failed prestige: John From Cincinnati. They laud a deep cast which includes Rebecca De Mornay and Bruce Greenwood, but are unsure about some of the less-seasoned actors, including the person who plays John. Geography Corner gets into detail about the Interstate 5 freeway between the Mexico border and Huntington Beach. The pair also theorize why Butchie is banned from that particular part of the coast. The show's credit sequence gets analyzed and the cadence of Deadwood dialogue trips up Justin. Also, an attempt is made to recast the title character and Erik introduces his appropriate nemesis.
