On our search to find a scary vampire movie, we had a listener recommend Nosferatu--so we watched it, duh! We always watch horror movies that are recommended to us by listeners (hint, hint)! Our opinions were split on this movie, sorry Bill Skarsgard, our decomposing, mustachioed horror boyfriend! We agreed that the artistry was beautiful and we appreciated some of the unique takes on this old tale, but one of us thought this movie was so boring that no even Willem Dafoe could save it. What better time for a crossover than a comic book adaptation? This week, Graham is joined by Andrew and Mick, the two hosts of Behold!, to examine the 2024 remake of James O'Barr's cult comic The Crow. Famously the source for a 1994 film starring Brandon Lee, that star's on-set death sparked rumours that the property was cursed, rumours that can only have increased once people saw this.Entering Pop Screen's airspace thanks to its decision to cast FKA Twigs as the hero's doomed love Shelly, the trio discuss her music and acting as well as the largely-ignored wider Crow mythology, the puzzlingly miscast films of Rupert Sanders, Bill Skarsgard's strengths and limitations as a leading man and the film's unexpected debts to Paddington 2. Before we throw down with the garlic, wooden stakes, crucifixes and Gibson J-50's, the synopses:In Nosferatu the Dracula story is reimagined as a German tale where newlywed, social climbing Thomas Hutter is sent to Transylvania to sell a house to the mysterious Count Orlok. After Hutter escapes Orloks castle of horrors, Orlock relocates to Wisborg and brings evil and plague with him. With the town gone mad, it is up to Ellen to stop Orlok. In A Complete Unknown, it is 1961 and a young Bob Dylan arrives in New York City to meet his idol Woody Guthrie. We've come to the conclusion of another year. And as we do, we also conclude our mini-series covering the three distinct versions of Nosferatu. First, we covered the original silent F. W. Murnau film from 1922, then the Werner Herzog directed remake from 1979. This week, we dive into visionary director Robert Eggers' take on the gothic horror tale. Atmospheric and saturated with ominous shadows, Eggers lends his unique sensibilities (bolstered by two powerhouse performances from Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard) to make this tale as haunting as possible. He also layers in some new thematic shades than we've seen before (particularly revolving around the character of Ellen) and amplifies the terror evoked from the character of Count Orlok. We explore all this and more, along with a Patron-only segment which includes our thoughts on recent awards contenders Anora, A Complete Unknown, and Sing Sing. We hope you all have enjoyed this year's episodes and we hope you have a safe happy New Year!5:31 - Looking back on Fear of God 2024Patron Only Segment: FoG Your Consideration: Anora, A Complete Unknown, Sing Sing11:25 - NOSFERATUSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Bill Skarsgard already has an iconic villain on his resume (Pennywise) but it doesn't get any more iconic than his latest role as the titular character in NOSFERATU. Bill returns to the podcast to talk about why he gravitates towards dark characters, his love of LORD OF THE RINGS and Batman, and why he's a cat person. SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! It's an extreme Arthouse Tuesday here at Breakfast All Day. First, we have a super-early review of "Nosferatu," Robert Eggers' exceptionally crafted retelling of the classic vampire story. Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Bill Skarsgard co-star. It comes out Christmas Day, but we couldn't wait to talk about it, so we're reviewing it now. Next is "The End," Joshua Oppenheimer's ambitious drama about a family living in an elaborate underground bunker after an environmental disaster. Did we mention it's a musical? Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, George MacKay and Moses Ingram co-star. In limited release this weekend. Finally, a palate cleanser: Our review of "Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary." The film takes an appreciative, nostalgic look at soft rock stars of the '70s like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins and Christopher Cross, and how they've shaped pop culture decades later. This is the music of our childhood, so we loved this. Streaming now on Max. We'll back back on Friday with "Nightbitch," "Y2K" and Movie News LIVE!, so come on back then. Thanks for being here!
