In this episode it is Brian's week to choose a movie and he decides to choose one that has been haunting him for some time, even though he has never seen it! Something caught his eye and sat in the back of his head until this week when he finally made Jef and Josh watch the 1981 zombie invasion film "Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror"! At first glance it seemed to be just another run of the mill Italian zombie flick with slow ass walking dead, cheap zombie makeups and a plot that is buried deeper than most of the zombies in the film, but the casting of a single man sets this movie apart from almost all other italian zombie movies. You gotta watch it!
We found out this morning that Tropicana Field (where the Rays typically play their games) is cursed? Well, apparently the property is on Native American burial grounds... and it could cause some bad luck!

In the horror community, the easiest way to show you are a fan is by what you wear. The horror T-shirt has been a staple in the fandom for what seems like forever. But it wasn't always like that. To say that fans have it easy today is a slight understatement. Not only in terms of their availability, but of the selection that is out there! It is an easy way to show the public that you are a card-carrying horror fan, whether you're wearing a Texas Chain Saw t-shirt, Cannibal Holocaust, or even a Night of the Living Dead shirt, it gives others that immediate notation that this person likes horror films. Fright Rags, one of the bigger horror T-shirt companies, has been around for over 2 decades, so we decided to ask owner/operator Ben Scrivens on the show to not only talk about the ins and outs of running a T-shirt company, but also to talk about our love of horror films and conventions. Films mentioned in this episode: Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Braindead (1992), Bride of Re-Animator (1990), Burial Ground (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Christine (1983), Day of the Dead (1985), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Faces of Death (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988), The Gates of Hell (1980), The Greasy Strangler (2016), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Hellraiser (1987), House by the Cemetery (1981), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), I Spit on your Grave (1978), It's Alive (1974), Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3D (1983), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Let Sleeping Corpse Lie (1974), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), Night of the Living Dead (1982), Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), Return of the Living Dead (1985), The Shining (1980), Tales from the Darkside (1990), Tenebrae (1982), Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), They Live (1988), The Thing (1982), Videodrome (1983), The Warriors (1979), The Wicker Man (1973)

White crosses on unmarked graves, rusted metal bunk beds and ivy-lined concrete halls - that's all that's left of the Dozier School For Boys. From 1900 to 2011, It was one of the largest juvenile reform institutions in the US. It operated under the guise of 'reforming' wayward boys, but when victim-survivors and families came forth with allegations of horrific abuse and suspicious deaths, its reputation turned sour. How many children were buried there? In this episode, forensic anthropologist Erin Kimmerle walks host Kathryn Fox through her excavation of the site and what she found lying beneath the grassy pastures. Devin and James are back in the Den, and ready to take you on an Italian picnic! (If you can stomach it.) As we continue our sampling of Italian genre films, we finally hit on a few legit Video Nasties with two of the most popular and trigger warning-worthy subgenres, CANNIBALS and ZOMBIES. We start things off with scandal right away in Ruggero Deodato's CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, followed by a visit to Umberto Lenzi's NIGHTMARE CITY (Don't you dare call them zombies!). Then we move from living flesh eaters to the undead ones with Andrea Bianchi's super bizarre BURIAL GROUND, and top off the meal with (what else?) Lucio Fulci's legendary ZOMBIE! (or is it Zombie 2?) There will be something to explore for every taste but good taste. Bon appetit!

In Shinnecock Hills, an ancestral Shinnecock burial ground is back in the hands of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. The site is adjacent to the summit of Sugar Loaf Hill, land that has been used by the Shinnecock and other Indigenous people from as far away as New England for cremation and interment. A house deemed historic, but not yet landmarked, sits on the land, and the question of what to do with the house remains. Shinnecock Indian Nation tribal attorney and Niamuck Land Trust Executive Director Tela Troge, Peconic Land Trust President John v.H. Halsey and Express News Group reporter Cailin Riley join the editors on the podcast to talk about the significance of the site and the effort by others to preserve the house there.

Episode 223: Burial Ground (1981), Beyond The Darkness (1979).
More nihilistic Italian cops, more ancient Etruscan evil, more Oedipal ickiness. This week, Joe and Rob are drawn irresistibly back to Italy to sample Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man (1976), directed by Ruggero Deodato, and Burial Ground (1981), directed by Andrea Bianchi. Cuddle up on the pillion seat - you're in for a very... very slow shamble on the wild side. We will be announcing a Spoiler Territory section for each. For Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man you can then skip ahead to the 54:35 mark, and for Burial Ground, potential spoilers end at 1:43:27. Theme music: "The Cold Light of Day" by HKM. The Overland Trail into the American West is one of the most culturally recognizable symbols of the American past: white covered wagons traversing the plains, filled with heroic pioneers embodying the nation's manifest destiny. In American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2023), University of Nevada assistant professor of history Sarah Keyes rewrites that well-worn story. Keyes book focuses on a topic that was at the forefront of the minds of those who traveled the train - death. 6,000 (or perhaps more) people died traveling West during the middle decades of the nineteenth century, and in a nation where death rituals held strong symbolic meaning, the realities of dying on the trail were troubling to westward settlers. By looking at the trail through the lens of death, Keyes also includes other forms of, and institutions central to, western migration, namely Indian Removal and the US Army. American Burial Ground is a fresh look at a topic that many people think they know something about - historians will never look at westward migration the same way again. We talked with Historian Sarah Keyes about her new book, "American Burial Ground: A New History of the Overland Trail." We delve into the history of the Overland Trail, discussing the 6,600 migrants who perished along the treacherous journey westward, their final resting places often marking the landscape of Indigenous land. Keyes' explains how the graves of these migrants emerge not just as tragic markers of a treacherous journey but as pivotal sites that shaped the course of U.S. expansion into the West. With death at the forefront, the Overland Trail transforms from a tale of triumph to one of profound struggle, where Indigenous resilience and resistance intersect with white settlers' ambitions. Keyes' reimagining of this historic touchstone challenges conventional narratives, revealing a complex history of migration, dispossession, and the indelible imprint of death on the American landscape. We highlight two artifacts from the Museum of the Rockies collection including a spur, that possible belonged to trailblazer, John Bozeman and a Log Cabin design quilt made before the Civil War and transported west to Montana Territory by the Lucy Nave Tinsley family.
