I so loved this deep, rich conversation with Cheryl Pallant; a writer, poet, energy healer, and dancer known for her dynamic exploration of language, movement, and holistic healing practices.Cheryl shares openly and vulnerably about her journey with a curved spine, the expectation of pain for life and doctor's guidance around limiting all range of motion, and how a class in movement improvisation in college led to a reduction in pain and becoming much more in tune with her body, feelings and thoughts. Cheryl has dedicated her life to helping people trust their bodies again and understanding the deeper messages from our bodies especially through pain, and to exploring the concept of ecosomatics that reminds us that we as humans ARE nature, and the ecosystem of our own bodies is intricately tied to the ecosomatics of nature and our planetary home. She reminds us of the importance of listening to our intuition, talks about the impact of the prevalent fear tactics in our societies and how we can work with those fears, and describes her latest book; Ecosomatics: Embodiment Practices for a World in Search of Healing, and SO much more! Enjoy! Cheryl's gift: Email Cheryl at cheryl@cherylpallant.com and tell her you heard her speak on the Sacred Feminine Power podcast, and she will email you five somatic writing prompts that will get you writing and listening to yourself and your body deeply. Many of us have probably heard the term Ecosomatics bandied about but weren't quite sure what it was or how it might be important. Well, today we get those answers as Cheryl explains ecosomatics, why its important during this period of climate crisis and she'll share how this practice might be used to support health. She'll reveal her findings of how embodied most people are, what is somatic listening and if all important intuition can be learned - and how.
In this episode, I am joined by author Cheryl Pallant, Ph.D. to discuss her book, Ecosomatics: Embodiment Practices for a World in Search of Healing. I first experienced Kalpana's healing presence during a Conscious Social Media Method group program – she was one of the first people to take it back when I launched it in 2019. This interview is a beautiful conversation spanning healing, connecting to your roots, and technology as a mirror for consciousness. If you're planning to listen to this conversation while driving, heads up: at 19:30, Kalpana guides us through a short meditation practice – please don't do it while driving! We discuss: Our connection to nature in the digital age Bringing indigenous perspectives to technology, business and branding Technology as a pathway and a mirror for consciousness What is ecosomatics? Forming a relationship with nature through your body Speaking to God through plants Rituals of connecting to the land you're on and your ancestral roots Walking a path to remembering Kalpana's experience with reindigenization The power of devotional singing What it was like to grow up in Colombia and then move to Houston as a child How Kalpana became a disciple of Amma, the hugging saint, and what her name means What is it like to spend time at Amma's ashram in India? “When we connect to our own energy and life force, we're actually connecting to the big energy out there in the world…And this is the venue, the entry point into connecting with all the rest of life around us.” - Mark Mooney Connect with your body, connect with the world According to Mark Mooney, the embodied or self-actuated self includes a deep connection to all the rest of life on the planet. Achieving this requires an understanding of somatics and ecosomatics. Somatics is a body-centered approach to learning and transformation; we learn through our body to reach our potential. Ecosomatics integrates deep ecology, which acknowledges the inherent value and interconnection of all living things. Tapping into our senses and sensations lays groundwork for both. This week Mark explains how our bodies and our “ historical shaping” inform our strategies for navigating the world. He also explains how connecting with nature enhances our wellbeing - and how to connect with nature even when it’s not easily accessible. Be fully in the experience of life [15:36] “We might as well be in the experience of life as opposed to thinking of life. Joseph Campbell suggested that we're not looking for the secret of the meaning of life. He suggests that we're looking for the experience of life, which means experiencing all of our emotions fully. Being fully aware in the moment and to the things going on around me. [Then the] experience of life just gets better.” Our shape suggests our mood [22:15] “That's an interesting part about shaping. You look at people’s shape, a ‘resigned shape’ is one of the things that people can see the most: kind of collapsed - looks like there's a weight around the neck…it’s part of the defense of ‘let's make myself smaller.’ I'll bring my energy and I'll condense my musculature. I'll actually bring my head down. Now I'm going to be smaller.” Connect to your senses to become present and alive [50:21] “Cultivate your connection to your senses. Go for a walk (and nature is probably going to give you the easiest time to do this) and spend 10 minutes strictly in one sense…so I could walk slowly and just pay attention to what I hear. What's the furthest away thing I can hear? What's the closest thing? What's high pitch, what's low and bass? And just pay attention and listen to the quality of sound.” [54:28] “It opens a world getting connected to our senses on this level, it opens a world that we're just not usually paying any attention to.” Resources mentioned in the episode: Mark Mooney: mooney23@comcast.net ecosomatic.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-mooney-6116a49/ Strozzi Institute: https://strozziinstitute.com/ Richard Strozzi-Heckler, PhD: https://strozziinstitute.com/about-2/#richard-strozzi-heckler Deep Ecology + George Sessions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_ecology#:~:text=Deep%20ecology%20is%20an%20environmental,in%20accordance%20with%20such%20ideas. In this episode I discuss the embodied patterns of how we consume, whether it’s food, information, or other resources. You’ll learn a bit about information hygiene, how to begin exploring your own relationship with consumption (and information overload), as well as the “Fifth Limb” practice of Ecosomatics.

In this episode I talk with Don Hanlon Johnson about environment, ethics, and embodiment. He's one of the original thinkers in the field and the founder of the first graduate program in Somatics. In a practice like this it's wise to know your roots. For somatics & embodiment, Don is right there.
Chandler Stevens is a somatic coach. He’s developing and organizing a body of work known as Ecosomatics, which revolves around the connections between body, mind, and environment. In his private coaching practice he focuses on helping environmentally-conscious entrepreneurs get out of chronic pain and restore deep connection of body/mind so that they can tackle our world's biggest problems. In this conversation Chandler and Carl talk about many topics, including functional fitness and natural movement, movement habits and coaching, and the connection of embodiment work and the environment.
Chandler is: A true champion of being human, in a human body, in a natural world.Q: What does coming home to your body look like? What I’ve been clicking with more and more lately is something like -- I just call it a practice of sensory stories. It’s like "Hey, think about your favorite smell. Now tell me a story about your favorite smell."Oh, my gosh, I think back to... I was in this bog in Vermont for a field project and we were walking around on this carpet of moss and all around we could smell these pines and these firs. Wow! Relating this story I get in to my body in some fundamental way. That seems to be nice kind of bridge to take to say: "I notice that I feel better when I talk about my favorite sensory experience."Huh? I wonder why that might be. Maybe because your sensory experience is actually how you make sense of the world. It’s a fundamentally physical thing. There are visceral sensations when we get into this juicy sensory stuff. Ummm...I think “come home to your body” is even an interesting phrase because it’s like…you just have to give yourself permission to make your way back.I look at my job as basically let’s create the context in which you feel open to find areas within yourself where you feel particularly comfortable and supported, to bring awareness to and to reconcile and reintegrate those place where you don’t feel comfortable, you don’t feel supported.Maybe there’s been some traumatic experiences in the past. How do we hold in mind the entirety of this person that we’re working with and create some physical experience for them to reconcile that even thought that’s uncomfortable it’s a part of me that’s not something foreign. Even though that’s uncomfortable that’s something I could get to know. And that maybe in that getting to know it becomes more comfortable. About the ShowWhat is the intersection of body, being, and environment? How do we move ourselves and our students into the places that are uncomfortable but inevitably a part of the beautiful whole?Being fully present with your students. Drawing them back into themselves. This was a large part of what James and I chatted with Chandler Stevens about and although the conversation was a collision of a lot of topics we've ruminated on in past shows, it's completely NEW and fresh and inspiring.Oh, and...There's something in his voice that gives you a sense of his steadiness, his curiosity, his dedication to self-knowing, exploration, and being of service. It will draw you in and keep you. This is one of those episodes that leaves you with a deep sense of calm and makes you want to pause. You're going to love it!Listen. Ponder. Question.
