So many of us spend years frustrated with our minds. We criticize ourselves for being distracted, anxious, overwhelmed, forgetful, or emotionally reactive. Over time, it may cost us relationships and/or career opportunities. We may begin to see the brain as the problem instead of recognizing that it is constantly adapting and responding to the stress, experiences, and patterns we live with every day. John Silva, DC's goal is to encourage us to see the brain through a more compassionate and holistic lens. This may help us shift from self-judgment to self-awareness. Dr. Silva will share how we can begin making peace with our brain and create greater clarity, balance, and emotional well-being. Let's learn how the brain functions and what it needs to thrive. In a world filled with complex treatments and endless health trends, it can be easy to forget that some of the most powerful healing tools are often simple and within our reach. By understanding how the body responds to inflammation, toxins, and deficiency, we begin to see that healing may be more dependent on foundational support than many realize. What was the Second Great Awakening? Why do we call it "awakening" and not "revival"? Why are the Awakenings called "great"? And why were the itinerant preachers called "circuit riders"? Explore these questions and more as our hosts talk with Dr. Don Forston, Professor Emeritus of Church History and Pastoral Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Many of us say we trust God. Yet when life becomes uncertain, we often find ourselves bargaining and grasping for control, telling God what to do and how to do it. We want reassurance and guarantees that everything will work out exactly as we hope. And when things do not go our way, we may pout, grow angry with God, or even feel abandoned. I talk often about unconditional love, but what about unconditional trust? The practice of unconditional trust invites us to remain open, grounded, and faithful, even when we cannot see the full picture. I have learned that trust is not about pretending life will always be easy. It is about believing that even our challenges can lead us toward growth, wisdom, deeper peace, and ultimately, to God's perfect plan. I will share how practicing unconditional trust can help us move beyond fear and into a life guided by faith, surrender, and the inner calm that comes from knowing everything will ultimately be alright. John Silva, DC, has gone beyond understanding the spine to helping us master our brain and mind. There are moments in life when our thoughts feel scattered, our focus fades, and we begin to question whether something deeper is going on. For many of us, that uncertainty can feel overwhelming. It's like trying to solve a puzzle without all the pieces or the box cover. But what if clarity isn't something we have to chase but something we can gently uncover? When we begin to understand the signals our brain is sending, we move from fear to awareness, from confusion to empowerment. What if the clarity you've been searching for has been within reach all along? Dr. Silva will share how the answers can be closer than you think and more accessible than we ever imagined… right in our own home! This week on The Conscious Consultant Hour, Sam welcomes Sara Roccisano, world-traveling author, international speaker, wayshower, and founder of Embolden Adventures.Several years ago, Sara left a tenured career in finance and renewable energy across Wall Street and Corporate America to undergo a profound personal transformation. From the depths of the oceans to the heights of the mountains, to the ancient megalithic sites and everywhere in between, she has explored over 43 countries and more than half of the United States, each journey deepening a two-decade spiritual awakening shaped by wisdom keepers, the natural world, and the call to adventure.Through Embolden Adventures, Sara has built an encouragement platform that inspires personal, professional, and spiritual transformation. Her forthcoming book, Stone Temple Passport: Awake and Radiate with Mama Ayahuasca, set for release in 2026, is the first in her Embolden Adventures Transformational series a true-story travel memoir that weaves together sacred sites, plant medicine, and the inner pilgrimage of becoming. Sara's path reflects what happens when we trade the certainty of a conventional career for the deeper certainty of following soul.Together, Sam & Sara explore what it means to walk away from a life that looks successful on the outside in order to answer something stirring within. They discuss the wisdom held in ancient stone temples, the teachings of Mama Ayahuasca, and the way travel itself can become a sacred practice when approached with openness and reverence. This episode is an invitation to consider the journeys, outer and inner, that are calling to you, and to trust that adventure, awakening, and self-discovery are still very much available to anyone willing to say yes.Tune in and share your own questions and comments about plant medicine on our YouTube livestream or on our Facebook page.www.EmboldenAdventures.comwww.SaraRoccisano.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
There are moments in life when we say “YES” to something without fully knowing how far it will reach. Fifteen years ago, I said yes to doing a 1-hour weekly radio show. The theme I chose was all about “being a friend.” What I visualized at the time was being a friend to each other, while sharing the latest in pharmaceuticals and more. The first live show, coincidentally, was on my birthday. Being a friend and creating a space where learning, healing, and truth come together are still my main focus. I never imagined that “YES” would become The Classroom. Along the way, there have been lessons, challenges, breakthroughs, and countless reminders that when we choose to grow, we also give others permission to do the same. This journey has never been about perfection, but about showing up, staying curious, and choosing love and forgiveness over fear again and again. I will not only share what these 15 years of living with purpose have taught me, I will give away a bunch of gifts. So, you may want to listen in to win a special prize! Neurodegenerative conditions often develop over time. They are influenced by a combination of lifestyle, environmental, and biological factors. World-renowned integrative physician Lee Cowden, MD, guided us toward better health during the M3 Detox Experience, showing us the impact of mold, metals, and microbes toxicity on the body. Dr. Cowden is back to update us on how supporting the body holistically may help address underlying imbalances that affect brain health. By exploring approaches that focus on reducing inflammation, supporting detoxification pathways, and nourishing the nervous system, we can begin to see new possibilities for improving cognitive function and overall well-being. When we shift our focus from managing decline to supporting resilience, we open the door to hope, clarity, and a more proactive role in our health journey. Thirty-five years ago, Steven Spielberg released his updated take on the classic children's story Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie. Arriving in theaters in 1991 with enormous expectations, the film was toplined by four actors at the height of their fame: Robin Williams stars as an aged-up Peter, fresh off Dead Poets Society and Awakenings - and just a year away from Aladdin and Mrs. Doubtfire; Dustin Hoffman, riding high after his Oscar win for Rain Man, as the titular Captain Hook; Julia Roberts, newly-minted as America's sweetheart after Pretty Woman, donning the wings as Tinkerbell; and Bob Hoskins as Mister Smee, following up his breakout blockbuster Who Framed Roger Rabbit. With a prime Christmas release date and a sweeping John Williams score, the film looked destined to become an instant Spielberg swashbuckling classic. Instead, a famously troubled production - marked by massive (and expensive) sets, shooting that ran 40 days over schedule, and a strained relationship between director Spielberg and ingénue Roberts - resulted in a film that critics were quick to call indulgent and uneven. Spielberg himself later admitted frustration with the project, and despite solid box‑office returns, the film was seen as a disappointment during a peak period of Spielberg's career. And yet the pixie dust of nostalgia has quietly rewritten the narrative: the film has become something of a cult favorite, embraced by fans who grew up with VHS rewatches. Now we're dropping anchor in Pirates Bay to see if Hook conjures up any happy thoughts, or if it is better off getting lost, boy! Political Awakenings and the Universal Silent HeroDuring a 1931 world tour, Chaplin was appalled by the hopelessness of the global depression, which inspired the social commentary in Modern Times. This period marked the beginning of his troubles with the FBI, who surveilled him despite his conservative financial habits and immense wealth. Chaplin famously resisted the transition to sound to protect the Tramp's universality, fearing an English accent would limit the character's global appeal. It's so easy to look around and measure our lives against what we see in others, their success, their happiness, their progress. Then we quietly wonder why we're not there yet. But comparisons often pull us away from our own story and into a narrative that was never meant for us. When we pause and turn inward, we begin to see that our path, with all its twists and turns, holds meaning that cannot be replicated or replaced. True peace comes not from keeping up, but from showing up as we are, fully and authentically. I will share what will shift in our lives if we stop comparing and start embracing our own journey? Hormones influence nearly every aspect of how we feel, from energy levels and mood to metabolism and overall well-being. World-renowned New York Times bestselling author, professor, researcher, activist, and musician, Neal Barnard, MD, of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has spent decades studying how nutrition and lifestyle choices can support the body's natural hormonal balance. It's important to understand how food, stress, and daily habits interact with the endocrine system. When we do, we can begin to see that many hormone-related struggles may be more responsive to change in those areas than we once believed. Dr. Barnard will share how the body naturally regulates hormones and empowers us to make choices that support balance, vitality, and long-term health. There are seasons in life when we find ourselves moving through the days on autopilot, checking the boxes, meeting expectations, and yet feeling a quiet longing for something more. Not more things, but more meaning, more alignment, more action, more truth. Creating a vision for your life isn't about control or perfection; it's about pausing long enough to listen within and asking yourself, “How do I accomplish my more?” I will share how when we give ourselves permission to dream with intention, we will act with clarity. It is time to feel like we are consciously creating our life. What would change if you allowed yourself to envision a life that truly reflects your heart? Trauma can leave lasting imprints on the brain, influencing how we process stress, emotions, and even everyday experiences. John Silva, DC, has spent years helping people understand how neurofeedback can support the brain's natural ability to regulate itself and heal from these patterns. When the brain is given real-time feedback about its activity, it can begin to shift away from survival responses and toward healthier, more balanced functioning. Dr. Silva will share how this non-invasive approach helps calm the nervous system, improve emotional resilience, and support those seeking to move beyond trauma and reclaim greater clarity, stability, and peace. WTF Just Happened?!: Afterlife Evidence, Paranormal + Spirituality without the Woo
Dan Cohen, host of Awakenings in Real Life podcast and author, shares how his father had a two-day awakening from severe dementia after pneumonia treatment, becoming 90% himself again and delivering a message that changed how Dan views consciousness and what dementia patients might still understand. Dan's father developed dementia after a stroke at 75 and progressed through all seven stages over 10 years. He became nonverbal, incontinent, needed help with everything, had no short term memory. Then in 2015, after antibiotics and steroids for pneumonia, something unexpected happened. For two days, he became himself again. He recalled specific details about his grandchildren's lives that happened during his dementia. He had conversations nobody thought possible. He asked for things he hadn't asked for in a decade. Dan's brother videotaped him toward the end of those two days and asked what he was happy about. His father's answer became the foundation for Dan's entire mission. This wasn't terminal lucidity since it happened eight months before death, not hours or days. No medical explanation exists. Dan's brother, a doctor, searched for answers but colleagues and neurologists had never seen this in 30 years of practice. Dan shares the profound lessons of acceptance and inclusion for dementia patients, how small acts of kindness can transform lives, and why we should give living eulogies. Liz and Dan discuss whether consciousness might be less dependent on the brain than we've been raised to believe and what this awakening might mean for our understanding of awareness during dementia. What does it really mean to be religious—and who gets hurt when belief goes unexamined? In this thought-provoking episode, Jack and Shannon dive into big, uncomfortable questions about faith, power, and the real-world impact of theology. From challenging harmful interpretations of suffering to exploring whether “faithful disagreement” has limits, the conversation pushes beyond easy answers into the messy, human reality of belief. It's honest, nuanced, and an invitation to wrestle with faith in ways that actually matter. Listen to other episodes in the Brewed Awakenings series. Download the Transcript. Complaints often come naturally, especially when life feels challenging. But complaining can reinforce stress, negativity, and disconnection. When not prompted to write a positive review, we are 60% to 70% more likely to write a negative review. What causes anger to prompt more action than sharing a positive experience? Practicing praise rewires our attention toward gratitude, hope, and constructive action. By noticing opportunities for appreciation, in people, in situations, or even within ourselves, we transform daily frustrations into moments of growth and positivity. I will share how turning complaints into praise allows us to reclaim our energy, strengthen relationships, and cultivate a mindset that attracts more of what we value and love. Our bodies often hold onto emotions long after the moment that created them has passed. Stress, grief, trauma, and even unspoken thoughts can become stored tension, quietly influencing how we feel, move, and respond to life. Recall Healing and Mindbody medicine expert Michelle LaMasa-Dawson, PhD, has recently discovered Human Garage, a new technique to move emotions beyond talk therapy. When emotions are allowed to surface and clear naturally, the nervous system can reset, creating space for clarity, balance, and renewed vitality. This approach invites us to listen to the wisdom of the body and experience healing not by force, but through permission and presence. Dr Michelle will share how Human Garage maneuvers can help the body release trapped emotions through gentle, intentional movement and awareness… The results are fascinating! Letting go is a practice that touches every part of our lives, from relationships and expectations to habits and past regrets. Have you ever reflected on how release creates room… room for peace, joy, and renewed purpose. When we pause, reflect, and intentionally choose what to hold onto and what to release, we free ourselves from the weight of resentment, fear, and self-limiting beliefs. I will share how learning the art of letting go empowers us to live more fully, to cultivate deeper relationships, and to align our daily choices with our highest values. The Resurrection is often remembered as a miraculous moment in history. Yet its meaning reaches far beyond a single event. It represents the promise that renewal, restoration, and hope are always possible, even in the darkest seasons of life. When we reflect on the deeper message of the Resurrection, we are reminded that transformation begins within our heart and mind. Choosing forgiveness over resentment, faith over fear, and love over division allows us to live the message of renewal each day. After some time away from solo episodes, Melissa is back behind the mic for a much-needed reset. She takes a step back to reconnect with why she started the podcast while getting honest about how it all began to feel like too much. All from rigid guest scheduling to saying yes too often and losing alignment through the process. Melissa reflects on taking ownership, shifting out of ego and into a more soul-led place, and remembering that things aren't happening to you, they're happening for you. After a conversation with a friend reignited her love for the show, she's stepping into a new season of solo episodes by choosing flow over force and getting clear on where she truly wants to put her time and energy while encouraging you to do the same. Healing is never just physical. It's emotional, mental, and spiritual as well. Lisa Tarantino, CFNC, has learned this from firsthand experience. Now, she helps her clients explore how suppressed emotions can create stress responses in the body that interfere with healing, energy, and resilience. Lisa will share how unresolved emotional patterns may show up as inflammation, fatigue, hormonal imbalance, or chronic symptoms. She will share why acknowledging emotions is not a weakness, but a pathway to restoration. This conversation will be a gentle reminder that true healing often begins when we feel safe enough to listen to what our bodies have been trying to say all along. Send us Fan MailDan Cohen is a storyteller, podcaster, speaker, and entrepreneur who found unexpected meaning in his father's journey with dementia. His writing began with the story of his dad's awakening from his dementia, and the message dad sent that he still appreciated and wanted to live life, an experience that reshaped his perceptions of family, memory, and resilience. In these pages, Cohen draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father's humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope. In 2026, following a successful business career, Cohen launched the Awakenings in Real Life podcast in January 2026, a vehicle for others to share their own awakening stories. Grab a cup of your beverage of choice and settle in for Faith Unfiltered Podcast's newest addition. In this introductory episode of Second Cup, hosts Jack Hindle and Shannon McAdam invite listeners into thoughtful, honest conversations about faith, doubt, and the questions that shape our lives. Drawing from their very different backgrounds, they explore what it means to be religious, Christ-like, or simply human in a complex world. Along the way, they reflect on how curiosity, art, and lived experience can deepen our understanding of discipleship and meaning-making. With humor, humility, and plenty of curiosity, they begin “walking around” big questions rather than rushing to easy answers. This conversation is sure to draw you into deeper reflection long after the Second Cup is empty. Listen to more episodes in the Brewed Awakenings series. Download the Transcript. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Dan Cohen as guest to the show. About Dan Cohen: Dan Cohen is a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad's awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name. About Awakenings In Real Life: The "Awakenings In Real Life" podcast tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning and hope. While we typically think of an Awakening as a "Getting Up" or "Spiritual" or "Religious" in nature, an "Awakening" is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near death experiences and more. The "Awakenings In Real Life" memoir was inspired from his father's awakening from his dementia, and the message dad sent that he still appreciated and wanted to live life, an experience that reshaped his perceptions of family, memory, and resilience. In these pages, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father's humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope.

In late 1916, while treating a group of patients at his psychiatric clinic at the University of Vienna, Dr. Constantin von Economo began noticing the appearance of strange symptoms that he could not account for. At the same time, in France, Rene Cruchet began noticing similarly strange and unexpected symptoms in his patients. Though the two men had never met and knew nothing of one another's patients, they would come to learn they were both witnessing the emergence of a new mysterious disease that would soon affect millions of people around the world. The illnesses documented by von Economo and Cruchet would eventually come to be know as encephalitis lethargica, or sleeping sickness, a strange condition that caused profound lethargy, hypersomnia, and a wide range of other frightening symptoms. Between 1919 and the early 1930s, millions of people all around the world contracted the illness, with nearly half of all cases resulting in death, and many more suffering long-term effects; yet a cause of the illness has never been established and the terrifying epidemic appears to have faded from memory not long after the disease itself ostensibly disappeared.
