The voices in our head are always speaking, often influencing how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. Some are rooted in past experiences, fear, or conditioning. While others offer wisdom, intuition, and truth. When we don't pause to question these inner messages, they can quietly run our lives, fueling self-doubt, stress, and disconnection. By learning to recognize where these voices come from and how they shape our thoughts and reactions, we gain the power to respond with awareness instead of habit. I will share how choosing to rewrite the story can lead us to compassion, curiosity, and truth which allows us to create inner peace, strengthen confidence, and live with greater clarity and intention. I have had many healthcare professionals share the dangerous side effects of GLP-1s. But, when Thomas Levy, MD, JD, a world-renowned cardiologist and expert in integrative medicine, wrote an article on this topic, I am ready to learn more. GLP-1 medications have opened new doors for people struggling with metabolic imbalance. Yet medication alone rarely tells the whole story of healing. Dr. Levy's research showed him how vitamin C, a foundational nutrient essential for cellular energy, immune resilience, and vascular health, may complement GLP-1 therapy. It supports the body at a deeper biochemical level. Rather than viewing GLP-1 as a standalone solution, Dr. Levy will teach us how vitamin C, along with intelligent nutritional support, can help protect the body, enhance outcomes, and promote long-term vitality while using a GLP-1 option. All Home Care Matters and our host, Lance A. Slatton were honored to welcome Dan Cohen as guest to the show.   About Dan Cohen:   Dan Cohen is a dynamic entrepreneur with over twenty-five years of experience and a deep passion for brand building. Dan is recognized for his strategic approach and ability to foster strong, lasting relationships. With release of his book, Awakenings In Real Life, he tells the story of his dad's awakening from his dementia. When his father awoke, it woke Dan up too. Dan also hosts a podcast with the same name.   About Awakenings In Real Life:   The "Awakenings In Real Life" podcast tells inspiring stories of transformation, meaning and hope. While we typically think of an Awakening as a "Getting Up" or "Spiritual" or "Religious" in nature, an "Awakening" is also an awareness, recognition, or realization of something. Dan Cohen shares stories of people awakening and then triumphing over bullying, addiction, disability, illness, trauma, loss, near death experiences and more.   The "Awakenings In Real Life" memoir was inspired from his father's awakening from his dementia, and the message dad sent that he still appreciated and wanted to live life, an experience that reshaped his perceptions of family, memory, and resilience. In these pages, Dan draws on a lifetime of lessons from his father's humor, toughness, and compassion, sharing family stories of love, inspiration, and hope.

How to Respectfully Disagree

Respectful disagreement is becoming a lost art. Yet it may be one of the most powerful tools for healing our families, friendships, and communities. Recently, I was attacked on my personal Facebook page for my beliefs. I was insulted, accused, and shamed simply for having a different perspective. That experience became a profound eye-opener, highlighting how essential respect is when differences in opinion, affiliation, or belief arise. It was clear that some people default to name-calling and accusations rather than asking thoughtful questions or creating space for an open exchange of ideas. This leads us to some important questions. How can we speak truth without hostility? How can we listen without defensiveness? And how can we remain grounded in love even when opinions differ? I will share how learning to pause, reflect, and choosing connection over conflict can become a pathway to understanding, healing, and genuine connection. For anyone who has lived with chronic pain, especially after being told it is “incurable,” the emotional toll can be just as heavy as the physical symptoms. Labels like Fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines, or other misunderstood syndromes, often come with frustration, isolation, and a sense of finality. Yet science continues to show us that the brain and nervous system are far more adaptable than once believed. Steven LaTulippe, MD, has spent over two decades helping his patients rethink what central pain truly is and how inflammation and neural signaling play a role. Love is not just an emotion; it is a condition of the heart and a daily choice. Over the years, I've learned that many of us are generous in loving others, yet hesitant to receive love ourselves. This is often because of past hurt, rejection, or fears that have not been acknowledged or addressed. Is it easy for you to love? Is it harder for you to accept love? Why are we afraid of a functional or healthy relationship? I reflect on what it means to soften, to remain open, and to trust love again. This is not something we earn, but something we are created for. Extraordinary living doesn't happen by accident. It happens by choice. Last weekend, in my blog, I created the acronym JAPHILAFF as a simple reminder to prioritize Joy, Acceptance, Peace, Health, Inclusion, Love, Abundance, Forgiveness, and Focus in our daily lives. These principles serve as guideposts for making intentional decisions that nourish our body, mind, and spirit. As I reflect on how I practice JAPHILAFF, I see how laughter, curiosity, and a lighthearted perspective help me stay grounded, consistent, and aligned with my values. This approach empowers us to live fully, embrace challenges with grace, and create a life that feels both meaningful and playful. I will share how we can all live a life rooted in JAPHILAFF! According to a Direct Line Group study from 2022, over 70% of UK adults don't get the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Nighttime micro-awakenings are a common contributing problem. For many of us, they happen four to six times per night without us even noticing. And they usually just mark the end of a sleep cycle. But they're more common in some people, and can be down to various factors like anxiety, mental hyperactivity, asthma, acid reflux, or arthritis. The effects of caffeine, tea, alcohol, and tobacco should also be considered. And it's important to know that as you age, your production of sleep hormone melatonin decreases. How are our sleep cycles structured? What should I do if these micro-awakenings become too frequent? What if those techniques don't work for me? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! In late 1916, while treating a group of patients at his psychiatric clinic at the University of Vienna, Dr. Constantin von Economo began noticing the appearance of strange symptoms that he could not account for. At the same time, in France, Rene Cruchet began noticing similarly strange and unexpected symptoms in his patients. Though the two men had never met and knew nothing of one another's patients, they would come to learn they were both witnessing the emergence of a new mysterious disease that would soon affect millions of people around the world. The illnesses documented by von Economo and Cruchet would eventually come to be know as encephalitis lethargica, or sleeping sickness, a strange condition that caused profound lethargy, hypersomnia, and a wide range of other frightening symptoms. Between 1919 and the early 1930s, millions of people all around the world contracted the illness, with nearly half of all cases resulting in death, and many more suffering long-term effects; yet a cause of the illness has never been established and the terrifying epidemic appears to have faded from memory not long after the disease itself ostensibly disappeared. ReferencesBrook, Harry Ellington. 1921. A broken microphone led to a bigger truth: I've been called into the alchemy belly, that messy middle where certainty dissolves and something wiser takes root. I open up about receiving help, resisting hyper‑independence, and trusting a season that looks like stillness from the outside but feels like honest, necessary change from the inside.Naming what so many feel yet rarely articulate: the split between divine feminine and masculine work when nuance goes missing. I share why I'm building containers that hold both softness and structure, inclusion and sacred exclusivity, personal responsibility and systemic context. I talk about the mental load, weaponised incompetence, and the quiet costs of bypassing. I also explore eroticism and spirituality as partners, not opposites—how integrating desire with consent, boundaries, and shadow work can reduce harm, grow compassion, and turn raw energy into repair. This is not a neat blueprint; it's a real‑time movement forming. I reflect on why some teachings erase difference, why others demonise the masculine, and how both miss the deeper medicine. Along the way, we look at power dynamics, anger as fuel rather than poison, and the courage to create spaces that are potent without being careless. If you've been sensing a shift—tired of hustle yet hungry for depth, wary of clichés yet willing to do the work— then this is for you.Subscribe, share this episode with a friend who needs the language for their own awakening, and leave a review if you enjoyed this episode (it helps this work reach more people). Each new year offers an invitation to begin again. Yet traditional resolutions often leave us discouraged rather than empowered. Over time, I've learned that lasting change doesn't come from rigid promises, but from intentionally choosing what truly aligns with our values, our health, and our purpose. As I reflect on what I want for 2026, I lean on cultivating a mindset that supports clarity, consistency, and sustainable well-being, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Choosing intentions over resolutions gives us permission to grow with grace, remain curious, and stay committed even when life becomes challenging. I will share wisdom drawn from Jesus' parable in Matthew 9:17, of pouring new wine into old wineskins… a powerful reminder that meaningful transformation requires creating space for the new, and why we should let go of old patterns. How has pouring new wine into old wineskins kept you from achieving your goals? STOP PRESS: a beloved 20th Century populariser of psychology who wrote massively successful books has been shown to be full of crap. Actually… don't stop press. Just put it on the pile with all the others. This time it's Oliver Sacks, the neurologist who wrote The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat, Awakenings, and many other books. An article in The New Yorker has shown that a lot of his case studies were, well… let's say they're not what they seem. In this episode we discuss the new article and Oliver Sacks's career more generally, and ask: should we have known? The Science Fictions podcast is brought to you by Works in Progress magazine. The article we discussed on today's show is about the tragically low South Korean birth rate, and why it got that way. Find that, and so many more articles about human progress, science, and technology, at worksinprogress.co.Show notes* Rachel Aviv's December 2025 New Yorker article on Oliver Sacks* Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders letter about “questionable aspects” of the autistic savant twins story, by Makoto Yamaguchi * Follow-up article by the same author* Response letter by Allan Snyder* Medical Humanities article on 10 years since Sacks's death* Paul McHugh's 1995 bad review of Sacks's work* Science isn't storytellingCreditsThe Science Fictions podcast is produced by Julian Mayers at Yada Yada Productions. This week's encounters episode is all about paranormal abilities—the kind that show up intentionally, unexpectedly, or right alongside something spooky that refuses to stay quiet. We're diving into psychic awakenings, premonitions, witchy lineages and more. Stories include: A listener discovers a terrifying entity in a too-cheap rental that awakens her psychic abilities. Another shares how fiery orbs and mysteriously repaired electronics suggest her beloved cats are still texting her from beyond. A teenage brother reveals a series of dreams that accurately foreshadow his real-life injury. One listener reflects on growing up psychic in a former funeral home, surrounded by shadow figures and guided by a protective grandmother spirit. "No fiction author would have had the temerity to invent a disorder of such incredible clinical diversity and puzzling behavior."In the winter of 1916-1917, as World War I raged, physicians in Europe began noticing bizarre cases of brain illness. Thousands arrived at hospitals with high fevers, headaches, confusion, and a host of other factors - suspected at first to be meningitis or even poisoning - yet none of the explanations fit.
