Femke van der Laan gaat met Kalpana Raghuraman in gesprek.

Jiban Rakchya 2082-12-09 {Nabaraj Shrestha & Kalpana Basnet}
In this intimate, yet simultaneously anthropological, exploration of the life of her maternal grandmother Pankajam (1911–2007), Kalpana Karunakaran achieves the remarkable: capturing the singularity of an exceptional woman, even as it situates her in a social universe shaped by the conventions of Tamil Brahmin orthodoxy. Through A Woman of No Consequence: Memory, Letters and Resistance in Madras (Context, 2026) Karunakaran conveys with clarity how the ‘utterly ordinary' life of a ‘woman of no consequence' (as Pankajam writes of herself), lived out largely within the confines of family and kin, was quite far from ordinary. The book draws extensively upon letters, glimpses of Pankajam's life narrated through her thinly-disguised semi-autobiographical short stories that allowed her to ‘say the unsayable' about love, intimacy and conjugality, and her autobiography, which she began writing in 1949 and kept writing till her last piece in 1995. What comes together is a riveting portrait of heartbreak and violence, yearning and delight, a housewife's quest for intellectual growth and her talent for friendships across cultures and continents. In the final reckoning, A Woman of No Consequence is about the chequered trajectories of a newly-born nation as seen through the lens of its daughters—restless women forcing home and nation to reckon with their stubborn striving for self-actualisation. Hello, listeners, and welcome back to part 2 of the 51st episode of First Principles.Ms. Kalpana Morparia reached out to us via email after the bro-ification episode. It was the most pleasant surprise and we immediately knew we had to get her on the podcast.Here's someone who joined ICICI in 1975 as a lawyer, had absolutely no background in finance, and was then asked to run Treasury. She was terrified but her colleagues told her: "You do not say no to Mr. Kamath and live to have a great career in ICICI."So she said yes and built one of the most remarkable careers in Indian banking.She talks about the ICICI culture where contradicting the chairman wasn't just allowed, it was encouraged. A senior JPMorgan executive once said the most impressive thing about ICICI was that "the junior-most person could contradict the chairman and get away with it."She also gets candid about things most leaders don't talk about. Like why she wishes she had done an MBA. Why she has strong opinions about people's physical appearance at work and knows it's a flaw. Why her spiritual guru completely changed her relationship with the one thing she considered her biggest regret in life.She went to a Ferrari racetrack and hit 304 kmph. She believes work-life balance is nonsense and wishes every youngster would realize that life is work and work is life.Listen in for all this and more, including why she thinks India's next 30 years belong to banking, healthcare, and infrastructure. Why retirement at 60 is an outdated concept. And why on a scale of 1 to 10, she rates her happiness at 9 plus.**********This episode was produced by Uddantika Kashyap and mixed and mastered by Rajiv CN.Write to us at fp@the-ken.com with your feedback, suggestions, and guests you would want to see on First Principles.If you enjoyed this episode, please help us spread the word by sharing and gifting it to your friends and family.v

The episode explores how three co-founders of Building Leaders—Dr. Kalpana Rao, Kyle Conley, and Jennifer Dubey—are reimagining school leadership by centering lifelong learning, psychological safety, and global perspectives for principals who are often “one of one” in their buildings. They trace personal journeys through classroom teaching, turnaround schools, global education, burnout, and recovery to highlight the need for more holistic definitions of success for leaders and students, beyond test scores and rigid accountability systems. The conversation surfaces post-COVID challenges like sustainability, staffing crises, and rising student needs, and shows how Building Leaders creates peer communities, reflective school visits, and coaching to reduce isolation and elevate the expertise of current practitioners. Throughout, they argue for structural shifts—shared leadership models, ongoing coaching, and deeper community engagement—so principals can lead with vulnerability, purpose, and balance instead of exhaustion and compliance.

Emmet Kennedy is joined by Adam Mills (Total Performance Data), Jamie Wrenn, and on-course bookmaker Michael Cannon to review a pivotal weekend in Europe's racing calendar. The Arc trials at Paris Longchamp reshaped the betting market, while shocks at Kempton and in the Moulin raised serious questions.
Join Maddy Playle, Chris Cook and Liam Headd to discuss a lively week in racing, including Arc trials' day at Longchamp on Sunday. Last year's runner-up Aventure shot to favouritism for the French showpiece after winning the Prix Vermeille, with Whirl's defeat the second notable disappointment for the race after Kalpana's loss to Giavellotto in the September Stakes at Kempton. The team also review comments by John Gosden and Aidan O'Brien regarding Ombudsman and Delacroix in the Irish Champion Stakes, with the Ballydoyle maestro suggesting the British trainer was a sore loser after ruling out Godolphin's colt from the Group 1 clash. Finally, the panel ponder how effective Wednesday's strike action will be as racing figures prepare to gather in Westminster.

Field Of Gold and Lake Victoria produced devastating performances to become Irish Guineas champions over the weekend. Not surprisingly, they are the first main talking points in this week's edition of The Front Page. The panel also asks why the Curragh looked so quiet for the Guineas festival and assess how Los Angeles, Anmaat, Kalpana, White Birch and Sosie fared in Group 1 prizes that whet the appetite for the months ahead. Following the launch of British racing's new national marketing campaign, Maddy, Liam and Lee give their views on what they have seen so far and then wrap up last week's other major news stories, including the BHA's threat to block racecourses from staging fixtures.

Today, I interview Dr. Kalpana Sundar, who overcame a life of restriction and stifled self-expression to discover her authentic voice. Growing up in a traditional Indian household in the United States, Kalpana experienced the tension of balancing cultural expectations and her own independent spirit. As the firstborn and a rebellious child, her attempts to express herself were often met with resistance, leading her to suppress her voice to conform. Her early years were shaped by her parents' hopes and dreams, which she fulfilled by pursuing a career in medicine, becoming a successful ENT surgeon.The turning point in her life came when she faced a personal health crisis—thyroid cancer. Although she physically recovered, unprocessed trauma from the experience led her to seek therapy years later. This journey helped her recognize the patterns of silencing her voice, not only from her upbringing but also in her professional and personal relationships. Slowly, Kalpana began to dismantle these constraints, transitioning out of her medical practice, ending her marriage, and embracing a new chapter in life.Today, Dr. Kalpana Sundar has transformed her experiences into a mission to empower others. Through her book Beauty Unbound, speaking engagements, and coaching work, she guides individuals to break free from limiting beliefs and find the courage to live authentically. She now helps aesthetic providers enhance their businesses while continuing to inspire others to embrace freedom and authenticity in their lives.__________________Dr. Kalpana Sundar is a multifaceted powerhouse in medicine, entrepreneurship, and personal development. As a board-certified expert in Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic Surgery, she founded a successful ENT practice and medical spa. Her early battle with thyroid cancer ignited her passion for achieving balance between professional and personal life. Through her book, Beauty Unbound, and transformative talks, Dr. Sundar inspires women to embrace leadership roles, especially in entrepreneurship.In addition to her work as a speaker on leadership and entrepreneurship, Dr. Sundar hosts the TV show Gloves Off and consults with aesthetic providers to elevate their businesses and personal lives. Based in San Diego, she lives vibrantly, indulging her love for travel, fashion, and martial arts. Join us as we delve into her inspiring story of passion and defying societal norms.__________________Find Kalpana here:https://www.youtube.com/@DrKalpana.Unbound https://www.instagram.com/drkalpana.unbound https://linkedin.com/in/drkalpanasundarhttps://drkalpanasundar.com/masterclass Support the showI'm Dr. Doreen Downing and I help people find their voice so they can speak without fear.
